AirPort Utility allows changing Time Capsule disk password with a device password only

Hello!
I just noticed that changing disk password is allowed for anyone who has a Time Capsule device password. (AirPort Utility WIndows version)
I find that illogical.
Is it a kind of bug or it is intended to be this way?

Well, lets say that you had friends or other family members that use the Time Capsule for wireless connections.
And, you have files on the Time Capsule drive that you only want to share with one other person. If you use a disk password, only the person with the disk password will be able to see the files on the drive.
If you don't set up a disk password, then anyone who is using the Time Capsule wireless will be able to see the files on the drive.
So, if you want everyone to have access to the files on the drive, then use the device password.
If you do not want everyone to have access to the files on the drive, then use a disk password

  • Airport utility cannot find time capsule

    Hi
I had set up time capsule  to work with airport facility ...it was working and then  I tried to  set it up for a printer  ...now it it wont  find  timecapsule.... The airport facility will not let me in to try to make changes....
I am running on Lion and have done all the latest updates
    Thanks

    Do the setup in isolation..
Plug the TC directly into the Mac..
Turn off any airport connection so you only have the TC plugged in ethernet to LAN port <->
If the airport utility still cannot find the TC.. reset it to factory.
Then set the TC into bridge and do the wireless setup..
update the TC then plug it back into the router..
All setups should be done by ethernet all the time.

  • Airport utility cannot find time capsule unless I reboot each time I need to back up. Use snow leopard

Why do I have to reboot the time capsule every time that time machine calls for a back-up?

Constant amber LED is nothing to do with network.. it actually is showing the TC is actually got a bad power supply or the disk is dead.
Power it off.. and do a full factory reset.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Then you can see if it boots beyond the solid amber.. if not let it cool right down for several hours and try again.
    What model exactly is it??

  • Airport Utility cannot find time capsule after new network

I created a new wireless network from my wireless router and then my time capsule started blinking yellow and airport utility can no longer find it. What can I do to fix this?

If you can connect temporarily to your Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, AirPort Utility can probably see it and explain the problem.

  • Disk Utility not recognizing Time Capsule Disk?

Hi I'm receiving the following error message from Time Machine:
"The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I am able to access the Time Capsule's hard drive via Finder, and can see the sparsebundles there, but when opening Disk Utility the Time Capsule does not appear on the left sidebar along with other hard drives (such as that of the iMac and an external USB drive).
I've gone through restore and factory resets, this message continues to come up...any suggestions?
    thanks

disk utility can only repair directly attached drives. it can not work on network drives like Time Capsule. but you can try repairing the sparse bundle itself. drag it to disk utility's left pane, select it there and choose "repair disk".

  • Wifi works but Airport Utility cannot find Time Capsule Device

I just upgraded my home network to a MacBook Air, with Lion OS, plus a 2TB Time Capsule running the wireless.   I have my DSL modem connected directly to my Time Capsule.    I also have a USB printer attached to the time capsule.   When first configuring everything all systems were a go.  Using the Airport utility in my Mac I was easily able to find and configure my Time Capsule.   I was also able to print wirelessly from my Mac to the USB printer.    All working as advertised.
However, after letting my computer go into sleep mode or sit for an extended period (more than an hour) the whole system blows up.    I am still able to access the interent through the wifi, however the Airport utility in my Mac no longer can see the Time Capsule, and my wireless printer says it is no longer connected.    The only way I have found to rectify the situation is to reboot the entire system (Mac, Time Capsule and Printer).   This is effective in returning the system back to normal, however this is not what I had in mind for my new Mac based wireless system.

  • Airport Utility detect/retain Time Capsule for network

Airport Utility won't keep recognizing Time Capsule. Works when I set it up, then when close computer and come back - lost network again.
I also have an airport express that is not being recognized at all??
    Any suggestions

When having difficulties accessing the Time Capsule (TC) thru the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
o Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the TC wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the base station's LAN ports.
o Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
o Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.

  • Parallels Win7 - Airport Utility cannot see Time Capsule

Running Win7 as virtual machine on Mac using Parallels 5.0. Mac can see fully functioning time capsule but when I switch to Win7 virtual machine, airport utility will briefly see time capsule and then it disappears completely. Same happens with using bonjour printer wizard when the HP Laserjet connected via USB to the time capusle will first appear and then disappear after 5-8 seconds. Searched help forums and have not found a solution, and welcome any help please. Internet access via time capsule on Win7 virtual machine not a problem at all.

Same issue, I found this http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=21064
Time Capsule is not a complete product.

  • AirPort utility cant find Time Capsule

I have trouble connecting to my TC. I've got the newest version of airport utility. I've connected the ethernet cable to the Wan port and plugged in the TC. The strange thing is that I'm now connected to internet but the AirPort utility cant find the Time Capsule (and the light flashes amber).

Thank you, that solved this problem for me:
    Problem:
I factory reset two 3T time capsules. Now airport utility can't fid them. "No configured AirPort base stations have been found." I've performed all of the following:
    Power cycled the time capsules
Restarted the Mac Mini they are attached too
    Reperformed the  factory reset
Configured the IPv6 in the network settings to "Link-local only"
Designated a router address manually for the ethernet port these time capsules are connected to.
FYI: I have two 3T time capsules daisy chained to a mac mini server on a company LAN. Connected by a USB-ethernet connection.
    Solution:
    Tuned MacMini Server's WiFi "ON"
Verified network setting IPv6 was set to "Link-Local only"
    Disadvantage:
I had the MacMini Server set up as a wifi hot spot so guests could use the internet through it and access our shared server to move files. We no longer have that ability since the MacMini now has to be logged into the company wireless.

  • Airport Utility not recognizing Time Capsule after Airport Extreme Update08

After installing the Airport Extreme Update 2008 my Time Capsule keeps crashing. I have powered down both my DSL modem and the Time Capsule, done a hard reset of the Time Capsule and yet it continues to flash amber lights. Yesterday, after hours of resetting everything and finally getting a green light and an internet connection, today my network and all of the airport setting have completely disappeared. Is anyone else having this problem and if so, have you found a solution? Is there a way to uninstall this updates as I believe it has caused these issues?

    Josto,
Unfortunately, you are not the only one:

  • Airport Utility cannot find Time Capsule and has a blinking amber light

I have a wireless router for my Wifi set up through AT&T (2WIRE). I am trying to add my TC to my existing network rather than establishing a new Wifi network with it. When I try to plug in my TC to set it up, Airport Utility cannot even find it. My TC has a blinking amber light also. I have tried reseting my TC, resetting my router, unplugging my router, unplugging my TC... I have the latest version of Air Port utility (6.2 (620.33)).

Connect the TC LAN port to the computer by ethernet.
If necessary do a reset of the TC so it shows up.
Put the TC into bridge mode.
Go to the wireless page, and set wireless to off.
Update the TC.. disconnect from the PC and plug WAN port to LAN port of the 2wire with ethernet.
The TC will now exist as a client in your network without creating a second wireless network.
You should also be able to access the TC via the airport utility.
I do think you should use the TC wireless since the 2wire does not provide a signal at 5ghz which is much faster than 2.4ghz.
So I do suggest you in fact do use the wireless but it is up to you.
It makes no difference having two wireless networks if they both connect back to the same router.
Do not use the "Join a wireless network" method.. ie no cable between the TC and 2wire.. that is poorest possible setup.

  • "Your Time Capsule Disk is Low on Storage Space" What are my options?

Hi I just got a message from Airport Utility that my Time Capsule is low on Disk space. My 500 GB Time Capsule only has 25GB of space left. What do I do? Do I have to purchase a 1GB Time Capsule. Can I simply replace my 500 GB Time Capsule with a 1GB Time Capsule. Will the new Time Capsule remember all my network and computer settings? Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions!
You didn't mention if you were using Time Machine for your backups to your Time Capsule, but I will assume that you are.
Some users reason that they don't need all the backups from many months ago and elect to erase the TC and start over with a complete backup. The risk here is that you have no backup until the new full backup is completed.
And, if you have transferred files from your computer to the TC and then deleted the files on your computer, you lose those files if the TC is erased.
In theory, you don't need to do anything as Time Machine will simply start to delete the oldest versions of backups to make room for new backups. My 500 GB TC ran out of space a few months ago. I used to be able to see how my computer looked a year ago. Now, I can see how how it looked about 11 months ago.
If you want to preserve every backup since day one, then you will need to add more storage space. If you purchase a new Time Capsule, Time Machine backups will continue on the new machine.
If you get a new Time Capsule, there would be very little configuration required. Basically, the new device would be setup as a bridge to the old Time Capsule using a short ethernet cable. You would need to reset Time Machine by pointing it at the new Time Capsule for backups.

  • HT3728 Time Capsule disk repair

When I open Airport Utility for my Time capsule, it says: Status: internal disk needs repair.  The time capsule still works for internet access but will not backup (it does not see the disk).  Is there anything I can do other than buy a new device?

Ok, old TC is to be expected.. and the Gen2 have WD drives which are dying now.. which is kind of sad to see as they are supposedly the better black drive.
You can pull the drive out and keep using the TC. But it will also need power supply fixed soon.
    See http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
For a laptop where you don't want to continually plug and unplug an external disk the TC makes excellent sense.
Just go out and buy a new TC. It is actually good value at least for the 2TB.
If you want a cheap solution.. pull the hard disk out of the current TC.. and buy a USB drive and plug that into it.
You can patch the power supply if it needs it. It only needs a 5v to the board.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
If you have a desktop computer, an external drive is superior in every way. Faster, cheaper, more reliable.
External usb are dirt cheap. But unless you have newest type Mac with USB3 do at least consider faster options FW800.. or if you are rich, Thunderbolt. For backup though usb2 is ok.
The current TC is well overdue for replacement.. that is my only hesitation.

  • Using AirPort Utility 5.3.1 or later to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk

Can I use AirPort Utility 5.3.1 or later to make a copies of specific folders within the Time Capsule disk?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281
I see this link that explains how you can make an archive of TC files directly to an external USB (greatly increasing the speed), but I would like to:
    1) Chose only specific folders and
    2) If possible, have it do this daily.
I am trying to avoid dragging files directly through my Mac. I want specific files (instead of entire drive) to go from the TC > External USB

The archive ability which is available in all versions of the airport utility except the early v6, where it was dropped for a time, is designed to do a full backup of the TC. It cannot do what you want.
It cannot incrementally backup. Each time you press archive it will do the whole disk.
you cannot select folders to be included or excluded. The airport utility is an extremely limited functionality tool.
I am trying to avoid dragging files directly through my Mac. I want specific files (instead of entire drive) to go from the TC > External USB
A TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router. It has no controls like a real NAS would have, like backup with a auto controls and ability to deselect items or do incrementals.
So you have no choice whatsoever on a TC except for the files to be processed via the Mac.
Carbon Copy Cloner is one backup utility that can do the job. But it will be extremely slow if the material it is backing up has to be copied to the USB on the TC. Still if your changes are not great, it can be set to automatically do incremental backups on a daily basis.
It is much faster btw to have the USB plugged into the computer, so files do not have to be transferred back to the USB.. and this is x10 if you are using wireless.

  • Airport utility message; time capsule disk needs repair

It is a one month old Time Capsule and was working fine. The light is  blinking yellow. I tried a restart on the time capsule. The airport internet is working fine. I opened disk utility but I do not see the time capsule disk there. Any help would be greatly appreciated?

You cannot fix a network disk from disk utility.. it only works on local disk.
I would return it now. Today.. while it is still called Today.
A disk that goes faulty that fast is doomed to early failure the next time.
There is only one function in the TC.. erase the disk.. do a one pass erase if it works.. note this may be greyed out if the disk if not even reachable.
You can also turn off the TC for a couple of hours to cool down.. is it hot btw?? It should run no more than just warm now.
Otherwise exercise warranty immediately.. to be a pain.. ask why they used Seagate drives after the iMac replacement program.
