Airport Utility asks for Password for Airport Extreme. Whaaa?
Found "Airport Utility" at Apple site today, and updated from "Airport Admin. Utility."
To do anything, it requests a password. Never had one or set one up for the Airport Extreme.
In Airport Utility, I tried resetting it and using "public" as the password, but that didn't work. I tried reconfiguring it and establishing the password through Airport Admin. and that didn't work.
At Airport Utility, it says I need to update from firmware 5.6 to 5.7, but I"m not sure if I'll just be mucking up the works if I can't go beyond the opening window without a password.
Anybody know how to work around this problem, please?
I suggest that you perform another "hard" reset of your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). It may take a few tries to make it "stick." This type of reset will erase the wireless encryption password and reset the base station administrator's password to the default: public.
If you are still being asked for a password and "public" does not work, you may need to go into the Keychain Utility to erase any previous passwords for your AEBS.

But, another user may have already tried to program the AirPort, so be sure to perform a Factory Default Reset in case the previous user's info might still be programmed into the device.

Airport utility asks for password after factory reset of Airport Extreme (spaceship), Why?
Hi, I recently replaced my Airport Extreme (the older model shaped like a space ship, 802.11 b/g) with an Airport Express. I tired to move the spaceship to a different room in my house to extend the wireless network, but it was not being recognized by the Airport Utility (v5.6). So, I did a factory reset of the spaceship. Now I can see it in Airport Utility, however when I try to configure it, the Airport Utility prompts me for a password. It will not accept "public" as the password. Any ideas? Could keychains be the problem? This is a 2009 MBP running 10.8.3.

Out of morbid curiosity I went to my Mountain Lion Mac and downloaded AirPort Utility 5.5.3. I confirmed it will not install on Mountain Lion using OS X's usual package installer, but using the technique that follows I was able to install and run it on Mountain Lion. The only thing I could not verify is its ability to administer an older AEBS since I no longer have any to test.
The remainder of this post is for those who are willing to circumvent Apple's desire to use only current versions of AirPort Utility for reasons known only to them. Proceed only if you accept this as an unsupported workaround strictly for the purposes of administering an older Extreme on a newer Mac.
Prerequisites: A package extractor like Pacifist or unpkg will be required. Pacifist is shareware, unpkg is free.

Directions for Pacifist (I do not have screenshots for unpkg but the idea is similar):
After the .dmg file finishes downloading double-click it to mount the volume containing the metapackage. Control-click it and select Open With > Pacifist from the contextual menu:
You will get the following dialog:
The "unidentified developer" in this case is Apple. Click Open to open Pacifist.
Click the "reveal triangles" until you see AirPort Utility.app and select it.
The next steps are important.
Select Extract To... from the toolbar as in the above screenshot. In the dialog that follows, choose Desktop since otherwise you will overwrite your existing, newer version of AirPort Utility in your Utilities folder which should not be deleted. Restoring it may not be trivial.
Authenticate, allow Pacifist to extract the app, then you can quit Pacifist.
You will now have AirPort Utility version 5.5.3 on your Desktop. Before you attempt to copy it to your Utilities folder though, be sure to rename it accordingly:
You can then drag it to your Utilities folder. Authenticate, and you will have it alongside later versions where they can peacefully coexist:
Use the newest version AirPort Utility to administer current production AirPort Base Stations, and older versions only as necessary for older AirPort Base Stations that cannot be administered any other way. -
Airport utility asks for password every time?
I have to enter my password every time I use the Airport utility. I enter it and exit the app and as soon as I click on it again I have tomre-enter the password again!
I tried to reset the AirPort Extreme and iPad. It works fine with all my iPhone and Mac. I tried to delete the app and reinstall it. No joy!Try the following on your MacBook Pro, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
1. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.) -
Disk utility asks for password for authopen when creating images
I just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion 10.7.4.
Now, whenever I use disk utility to create a image from a CD/DVD, I get a dialog window saying that :
authopen is trying to open the chosen file.
Type your password to allow this.
I never saw this dialog in Lion. Why am I getting this message?
Also, after upgrading to ML I cannot eject the CD/DVD after my cdr or dmg file is created. I have to wait a few minutes. In Lion I only had to wait a few seconds.
I tried the usual permissions repair, reboot, etc.
*By the way I have been using Macs since the good old days of G3, before the iPod was invented, so I am not totally clueless here. My forum ID got messged up so I had to create a new Apple ID.To get around this issue, the group name needs to be changed to 'everyone' in the sys.openfile section of /etc/authorization. You will still need to authenticate, but you do not need to have admin credentials:

FCP does not work after sleep - asking for quartz extreme card
Hi all,
Well my 2 x 2.266 Dual Core Intel xeon with 5 gig memory is getting a little long in the tooth and I have started coming up against what I suspect is hardware issues.
The OSX is 10.5.8
It has a blackmagic HD card as well as an ESATA rocketraid card.
I have a sohoraid attached as well as a Drobo (via firewire).
In the last couple of months I l've had a bunch of issues that I wonder if are at all related.
Firstly the DVD player app now freezes the whole computer if I try and start it.
when it first did this I spent forever rebuilding the system for it to only fall over again a month or so later.
2) In the last couple of weeks, when I wake from sleep the mouse icon is gone and what is in its place is a small area of distorted,broken pixels. Still works as a mouse (the distorted pixels move round like an arrow) and the arrow returns when I tab through to another application. Weird...
3) In that same time when I have started Final Cut Pro it immediately gives me a warning saying a quartz extreme video vard is required to run application and refuses to open. Restarting computer fixes this but this is a new development.
4) I ran into an issue at beginning of the year with my soho 5bay raid where it said a drive failed and then couldn't rebuild with a new drive, took it to shop and it blinked into life on their computer. Drive was never broken. Its now back and running as it should, like it always did, but they couldn't see what went wrong.
These of course could be a unrelated but I somehow suspect not.
Any first 'go-to's" you would recommend to just try and trouble shoot this?

1. Set Mac to NEVER SLEEP. No exceptions.
2. Repair Permissions on all drives.
3. Trash Preferences for offending apps.
4. Wipe and re-install fresh OS and apps every 6-18 months.

Disk Utility asks for installation disc - what are my options?
I have a 17" inch macbook pro intel core 2 duo running OS X 10.6.8. I believe it's from 2007. I am out of the country in PERU right now, editing a film on my Macbook. I accidentally dropped the Mac, which smashed in a corner edge of it but things still seem to work. However, when I run Disk Utility, it says "The disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair the disk". It also says the problem is an "invalid volume free block count (It should be 2306734 instead of 2306728)".
I don't have the original installation discs and am wondering what my options are for repairing the Mac. It makes me nervous knowing there's a kink in the computer. I'd rather nip it in the bud. If I knew where to acquire the startup disc, it's possible I could have a friend bring me when he visits. But I'd rather not buy them new/it new (if even they still sell them). And I don't see any listings on ebay. Does the Mac OS X installation disc have to be from this exact model, including a 17 inch Macbook Pro? Are any other discs compatible? Do I have any other options for repairing the Mac?

Airport extreme to play airtunes?
Is there any way I can use airtunes with my new Airport extreme? Is there a simple USB to 1/8th inch converter or anything? I originally asked for an Extreme for Christmas because I assumed it would have airport capabilities. I'm quite shocked and disappointed that it doesn't.
i don't get it...
i have an express (airtunes) connected to my 5.1 amplifier on one side of the room. at the other side i have my iMac with an extreme connected via DSL
the imac only "sees" the extreme, while the express seems invisible.
before buying the express (a self-christmas-gift that i needed to work wireless with a MacBook), my iMac was able to "see" the Express and i could play my itunes music on my home system. now, adding the extreme, i can't see it anymore....
does it make sense?

I set up airport wifi with a WEP password, but it never asks for the password and anyone can enter my network...what to do?
Is it possible to backtrack your way out of the keychain?
Yes:
Run the Keychain Access utility found in \Applications\Utilities
In the category column (on the left side of the utilities' window), select "All Items."
In the right column look for your Network Name. It will have a "Kind" of "AirPort network password."
Delete every entry that has both your Network Name with this Kind.
What can I do to test or reset?
You can completely erase all the base station's passwords by performing either a "hard" or "factory default" reset. You can also temporarily disable these passwords for up to five minutes so that you will have enough time to change them using the AirPort Utility, by just performing a "soft" reset. I would recommend this one first.
This would also be a good time to consider using WPA or WPA2, instead of WEP, as WEP is no longer considered secure.
I got the airport extreme based used with no softward and set up with reset on airport base and followed instructions.

New airport extreme asks for password during set up
Got a new Airport Extreme for my Macbook pro and it asks for a password to set it up. Tried "public" but does not work. Did a hard and soft reset and still nothing. What else can I do?
A "soft" reset should disable all the base stations passwords for up to five minutes so that you could change them using the AirPort Utility. Is this not the case with yours?

Have them perform a complete power recycle of their networking hardware. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Also, make sure that they perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort (as described in the tip) to be sure to return the AirPort back to its "out-of-th-box" configuration.

I Installed AirPort Extreme 3 computers work fine. I am trying to use my old sony laptop. It is asking for a network key. I entered wpa2. I also tried my password. What should I do?
Which wireless security type did you configure your AirPort Extreme with? You basically have two choices: WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal. There are actually others, but these are the most common in use today.
What version of Windows is the Sony laptop running and which service pack level is it at? Do you know what wireless security types that this laptop's wireless can support? -

What OS are you running.. this is usually only a problem in Mavericks.
If so I recommend you mount the hard disk manually..
Use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the IP address if static.. eg
AFP://10.0.1.1
Or the name.. but you will have issues unless the name is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. if you are using bad names.. fix it by a full factory reset in airport utility and give it all names that comply to the above.
Type in
AFP://TCname.local Where TCname is replaced with the actual name.
You will be asked for the password the first time which is public unless you changed it.. please remember to save this in the keychain.
Copy files then to a new directory you create on the TC.. do not place files inside the TM sparsebundle. Nor directly under the main directory. -

However recently I have had some problems with my airport extreme and would like to upgrde the firmware, but it keeps asking for a password of which I have no knowledge of.
