Airport Utility can't detect 2nd Airport Express

I recently bought a new Airport Express to extend the range of my network (from an existing AE). I've got a MBP and a MacBook. It all looks fine on the MBP - Airport Utility can see both Express devices, but the Macbook can only see the primary AE, even when it's virtually next to the MBP. he network throughput on the Macbook is shockingly bad. Not sure if the two problems are related - any ideas anyone?

Check your setting on both of the AirPort Express devices as follows using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Main AirPort Express:
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Check mark next to Allow this network to be extended
Update any changes
Remote AirPort Express:
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Network Name = Same as Main
Check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Same as Main
Wireless Password = Same as Main
Update any changes
Power cycle the entire network..power everything down
Start the modem first and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start the Main AirPort Express the same way
Start the Remote AirPort Express the same way
Start your computers one at a time the same way

Airport utility can not find my airport express...
I was trying to connect a PC  (Windows XP) laptop to my wireless network via the airport express.
I have a Mac with an airport that I use to get internet in my other room.  I am trying to get internet on the laptop too.
I somehow manage to erase my network & now my airport utilities won't even scan/recognize my airport??
ANY help would be appreciated, mac helpline wanted $59 to help & I live in a small northern community where they do not have anyone that will address a Mac issue!!
    Thanks for your time.

Thank you SO MUCH Tesserax for taking the time to help!
I powered everything down, slowly powered everything else up from the modem to the airport then the computer.  I then reset the airport & rescaned it through utilities.  I set up a new network & voila!  wireless up & running again.
I am going to try to connect the laptop to the network now.....well, mabey tomorrow night, I've had enough for 1 evening!
I will update....or possibly be begging for more help...we'll see!
    Thanks again for your time!

  • Network works fine but Airport Utility can't see the Airport

If someone knows of an earlier discussion on this I'd be grateful for a pointer. My Airport Extreme network has been working fine, syncing with Apple TV, accessing the Internet, etc, but The AirPort Utility can't find it! I discovered this when I had trouble printing and started up the Utility to see if there was something I could do to fix it. The utility can't find it but the network is working fine. However I do need to connect a printer to it.
Any advise on what I can do?

I know this may sound obvious and silly, but are you actually connected to your Airport wireless network and not a neighbouring network?
I thought of that myself and there are at least four networks around my house (three unprotected!) but no, I am connected to the AirPort network!
I'll try one other thing before I do a hard reset though. A week or two back I'd tried to connect an Airport Express manually by creating a WDS. Never got that to work and that may be a problem. I notice that if I do a soft reset the AirPort Extreme become visible in the Utility for a few minutes. I'll go th manual setup and see if I can't delete that WDS...

  • My airport utility can't find the airport device.

Everything is connected. I bought the device about eight months ago and have used it successfully to set up wireless networks twice. Now i have a DSL modem, and there was an error that the IP was in use. So i followed some tips online to reset both devices, restart, etc. Currently i have everything connected and plugged in, including with an extra ethernet cable from my laptop to the airport's wan port. However, NOW the airport utility can't find the device and it's just sitting there blinking amber slowly. The modem is all lit up and green and appears to be working. ***? is the airport express broken?

How are you configuring up the Express once you have AU working with it? Please provide us with what you want/need to have.

  • My airport utility can't find my airport base station

My AirPort Express stopped working! It keeps flashing the amber status light. I tried finding the problem with airport utility but airport utility can no longer find my airport base station. I did a hard reset but I am not sure what to do now.????

Suggest that you try the following:
    1) Reset the cable modem. There is a reset button on the back or bottom of the device. Check your documentation for the modem for exact details. In general, you press the reset button for a few seconds and then power down the modem completely.
That means pulling the power plug from the back of the modem or the AC wall plug
Leave the modem powered off at least 30 minutes
    2) Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme using the instructions in this document
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
    3) Then power off the AirPort Extreme
    After 30 minutes.....
    4) Connect the Ethernet cable from the cable modem to the WAN port (circle icon) on the AirPort Extreme
    5) Temporarily, connect another spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme
    7) Power up the modem and let it run for 5 minutes by itself
    8) Power up the AirPort Extreme the same way
At this point, the AirPort Extreme should be slowly blinking amber
    9) Open AirPort Utility (I assume that you have AirPort Utility 6.0) and click on Other Base Stations, then click on the Base Station xxxxxxx representing your AirPort Extreme to start the setup process
AirPort Utility should suggest that you configure the AirPort Extreme to "Create a wireless network". Accept that option and enter the required wireless network name that you want and passwords
Follow any more prompts as required and AirPort Utility should configure the device for you
Wait 25-30 seconds for a green light
    10) Disconnect the temporary Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Extreme
    11) Log on to the wireless network that you named during the setup process
    12) Report on your results

  • Airport utility is not detecting my airport express

it worked fine in the past. then I tried to switch to time capsule. I had problem with this. Probably I deleted in the airport utility programme my old airport express (pressing ignore).
Now when I want to use again my airport express in order to have a wlan network the utility programme is not detecting my airport express. I already pressed the reset button at my airport express, but it still doesn't work.
What can I do that the utility programme discovers again my airport express?

Be sure you perform the reset correctly. While the Express is powered up, press and hold the reset button and keep it depressed continuously, for at least five seconds, until its LED flashes rapidly. After a moment or two, the LED will flash amber, slowly. The Express will then appear as an unconfigured base station in AirPort Utility.
Depending on your version of Mac OS X the Express will appear in your AirPort menu as "Apple Network nnnnnn" or "New Airport Express..." Select it, and launch AirPort Utility to configure it.

  • Airport Utility Can't Connect to Airport Express For Set-up

    Hello,
I have a first gen Airport Express and and am setting it up via the Airport Utility on Windows 7.
The Airport Utility sees the new device, which is currently set to factory. When attempting to a connect to do the guided set-up it fails to connect reporting a "error -4". The Airport itself is blinking amber.
The kicker is though, the wifi works just fine. Just the network has a generic name and is unsecured.
How can I get the Airport Utility to connect to the Express so I can estblish a network name and a security key?
    Thanks so much!

I think it was just a issue with the Airport Windows utility. My girlfriend came over and fixed it with her iPod Touch of all things, took her like 30 seconds to set a name and establish a password. Ive never had a issues setting up a router wirelessly before, in fact many don't even come with software any longer in favor of just instructing you to punch in a special url into a browser.

  • Airport utility can't connect to Airport express station

My AirPort utility has problems to connect to my AirPort Express station (old model a/b/g; old firmware 6.1).
First problem was, that it could not read the configuration. After a factory rest like described here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044 the utility comes one step further and asks me for a password: I tried "public" several times, but it asks me over and over again for a password. What i my problem?

Problem solved: I downgraded the AirPort utility to 5.0. Then I was able to access the AirPort Express station. Upgraded the firmware to 6.3. Then the station was recignized by AirPort utility 5.3.1 again. Connected it to the AirPort Extreme as AirTunes-station. Works perfectly.

  • AirPort Utility can't detect base station but my laptop's wireless utility

Just bought an AirPort Extreme base station yesterday. I have installed the new version of AirPort Utility from the disk on my Windows XP laptop and updated it online.
Visibility of the station from AirPort utility is very sporadic. I have gone through setup twice and done a re-set of the station once. I can see the station from my laptop's wireless utility, but can't establish an internet connection. Can't connect with AirPort Utility long enough to figure out if the configuration is ok.
Anyone seen anything like this? Could I have a bad base station? thanks.

I have a similar problem, only it is my MacBook that can see the Airports, and my G5 that cannot. To make it even more counter-intuitive, the G5 is *plugged in* to the Airport Extreme base station, and while it gets internet and other network devices, it cannot talk to the very router it is connected to.

  • Airport Utility can't see the airport, nor are shares visible (Why is there no very extensive 'cookbook' on troubleshooting Airport Extremes?)

For quite a while my MBP (10.5.8) cannot see the Airport Extreme 802.11n (AE) (2nd ed) anymore when I start Airport Utility (AU) (v5.5.3). My solution was to lower security settings of the MBP to 'accept all incoming connections', knowing that this was not a nice solution. Normally I had selected 'acces for specific services and programs' (the lowest option - my AE differs in language). In the past I denied access for requests that regularly came from mDNSresponder (etc), as I could not easily find out how necessary they were. I am not sure whether Bonjour is running; I try to stick to TCP/IP (without Netbios); the same might be the case with other obscure network services...
Then I added another network drive (WD Mybooklive) that works based on shares. The installation program worked fine, I was able to set up the drive for Timemachine backups and -in the proces of upgrading to Snow leopard (I always stay one OS version behind)- my MP3 collection could be read from another drive that was connected to the AE.
I am not sure what exactly lead to the loss, but now I can not see the shares anymore in the finder. Unless I select 'connect to server' (Cmd-K) and fill in afp://ip-adres. I had some trouble with the MBP-drive and Disk Utily could not fix it in multi-user mode. Applejack-auto in single user mode finished after some repairs (catalog file and catalog hierarchy errors), but I doubt that causes the trouble.
In all cases, internetting and accessing the connected drive was no problem.
The funny thing is, my Mac Mini (10.5.8) however can see the AE with Airport Utility (different version) fine. Somehow I get the idea that the networkstack  of my MBP has been messed up, but I don't know what it should be, nor how I could check it, or how to repair the stack. But maybe it is not the stack at all.
Right now, I've just reset the AE by holding the reset button for about 10 s. The name has returned to 'Base Station xx', which is visible in AU, but when I click on another button ('manual configuration' or 'continue'), first the message "Are you sure you want to connect to another wireless network?". Finally no connection appears and the error 'AU cannot find your Airport' shows up (while the Base Station is visible in the left column) - or does not show up when I refuse to switch to another network.
So, who can help me to reconnect to the Airport Extreme and/or repair the network stack?

WDS is a difficult setup for many users because it is so easy to make a mistake (while swearing that you are not).
Apple's instructions for WDS are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262
I still think the instructions provided by Tesserax are the best available:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2422028&tstart=0
I can't add any more to this other than to say that long ago when I used WDS, I would swear that I had all the MAC addresses entered correctly, etc and would still have problems. So, I ask my wife to watch me and she immediately catches something like I entered a "l" (letter L) instead of a number "1", or a "O" (letter O) instead of a "0" (number zero).
Finally, there's always the possibility of device that is not holding settings...a defective device.
Hopefully, Tesserax will have some additional thoughts.

  • After any settings update, Airport utility can no longer see airport

I see many complaints on the internet, but no solutions.
If I go into the airport extreme via the utility and make some changes that require the airport to reboot, it becomes invisible to the airport utility. Therefore, anytime I want to make changes, I have to make them all at once and redo everything if I ever need an additional change.
I see that Apple support wants $29 for a call, however I have an extended warranty from the store I bought it from. It is probably a waste of time and money for all parties involved, but I could just bring it back every time I get a chance and get a new one until a new firmware update arrives.
Does anyone know if there is a fix -- like reverting to older versions of the firmware or the utility?
Details: Connection: wired ethernet. Utility version 5.4.2 Firmware 7.42
Sometimes a soft reset works to restore visibility and my settings survive. Sometimes a hard reset is required. Other than that, it appears to work just fine. If I didn't need to regularly maintain port mappings I probably won't care -- but I do and this is the most expensive router I have purchased for home use by far. The problem is easily repeatable so this is definitely a bug.

I have the same issue. I used to be able to get to my Airport Extreme by going to the File menu in Airport Utility and typing in its IP address and password but even that doesn't work anymore... What's going on Apple?
I'm accessing my AE over ethernet due to wi-fi bugs in Snow Leopard.

  • Airport Utility can't find Airport Express after setting up as repeater station

I wanted to extend my 2Wire-based wireless network into a specific room that never seems to be able to pick up the signal, and found the following instructions on how to do so on Apple's website:
(note: these instructions were submitted by another user in response to a question as to whether or not an Airport Express could be used as a repeater station for non-Airport Extreme-based wireless networks - linked here http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/product/MB321LL/A?pqid=QY4CAJJC7KFTTD KYH72DKPXF4CAUA9D4J).
Yes, you can do this two ways:  If you can connect your airport express to your router via ethernet, then you will perform the following steps in the airport utility:
    1.  Select your airport express.
    2.  Select manual set up.
    3.  Under Wireless, select Participate in a WDS network
    4.  Enter your network name, radio mode, channel, and security
    5.  Under WDS, select WDS main
    6.  Check wireless clients
    7.  Add the MAC address of the router
    8.  Click update
    That's it
Now, if you connect your airport express to your router wirelessly, all the steps are the same except for step 5.  In this step, select WDS remote instead.  Everything else is the same.
I followed those instructions exactly with my Airport Express and, after restarting, the amber light is flashing on and off continuously and the Airport Utility can't find the Airport Extreme base station. What the heck went wrong here?

    Update:
I restarted the laptop I used to set up the AX as well as pushing the "reset" button on the AX (first time - pressed it for 1 second, Second Time - pressed and held for 15 seconds then let go). The Utility still isn't recognizing the base station.
I also upgraded the Utility's software to 5.5.3 right before I went through these steps, and now it's not recognizing the base station. ARGH.
Update #2: I plugged the AX into my laptop with an ethernet cable and the utility STILL can't detect it. This is ridiculous.
Update #3: Not 30 seconds after update #2, it FOUND the **** AX >.< I'm updating the firmware, but I still can't get it to work as a repeater station if I have to plug it into my laptop all the time JUST to get the Utility to recognize that yes, Virginia, there IS an Airport Extreme.

  • Airport Utility doesn't detect my TimeCapsule

Airport Utility can't detect my TimeCapsule over wlan on my laptop. I have tried resetting the unit and have applied all updates (firmware and software). Strange thing (at least to me) is that the laptop connects to internet through TimeCapsule normally.
Not being able to connect to Airprt Utility is not a real problem for me, since my desktop PC detects the TimeCapsule without any problems over ethernet. The real problem is the fact that my laptop can't find the printer that's hooked up to TimeCapsule can't be detected by Bonjour. Desktop again has no probelms with the printer.
Does anybody have any clue wether the problem is with the laptop or TimeCapsule? Sometimes I have gotten the Airport Utility to find TimeCapule on the laptop and then the printer worked too, but most of the time it doesn't work.
    Thanks

On the Laptop, go into System Preferences, then into Network. Make sure Airport is selected on the left and click the "Advanced" button on the . . . Wait.
I just noticed you're on Vista. It might help if you provided a little more info on how you have the laptop configured to access your network. In Mac OS, sometimes the desired network is not actually the one that is taking priority. As a result you need to go in and move it to the top of the list of detected networks and delete any that you never intend to connect to (like a neighbors network). Your laptop might not know which network you're trying to connect to.

  • Airport Utility doesn't detect Airport Express

    Hi,
I have 3 Airport Express' which I use to join my existing wireless network and stream music via airtunes.  Everything has been working fine until recently when I upgraded my wireless router to a Belkin Play N600.
The router is set up and connected to the internet, and my Airport Express' also connect to the network fine (they are shown as connected when you access the router).  The Airports connect fine both wirelessly or via ethernet.  However, despite the PC also being connected to the network (again shown as connected to the router and listed next to the airport express') the airport utility does not see the airports when you do a scan?
What is even stranger is if go to "file->configuration other" on the airport utility and then type in the airports IP address and password you can access the Airport and change settings etc. It just doesnt recognise them when you do a scan (and therefore it doesnt detect them in iTunes either)?
Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

    Thanks!
What kind of cable, and connect it to what (the computer, I guess, or the router?)? Sorry to sound so dumb, but I'm very new with this technology :-)
