Airport Utility no longer shows two AE's on the network
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station + 4 AEs' (802.11n); when Airport Utility window opened for an update, I quit in the middle of it, when i opened up the Utility today, it no longer shows 2 of the AE devices. Anyone know how to have all shown again in Airport Utility? Thank you.
Ended up being a problem between my two routers conflicting with each other. Set up two different networks in the house and now all is happy.

If you just replaced the router with an Airport Extreme or Express:
disconnect the modem from power, disconnect the new router from power, connect the modem to power and wait till it os fully started up, then connect the new router to power. After a while the amber light will turn to flashing, then after a while it will turn to green. Then with AirportUtility (in Aplications/Utilities) it should be configured with the password. -
Airport utility does not show new firmware
Apple's website states that the latest firmware for Time Capsule is 7.5.1. I have 7.4.2, but when I try to update through airport utility, it says that 7.4.2 is the latest version. Has anyone else run into this?
Well, I just read page 14 of the topics and found that my version of the TC is current at 7.4.2.

First-time asker, multi-time reader. Could not find this situation exactly in other posts.
I’m having trouble accessing two different Airports.
I have an Apple Airport Extreme 802.11n (4th generation) handling the wi-fi for 3 laptops and 2 iPhones, but I needed to extend the range within the home one room so I got a Airport Express.
It’s showing up in the Airport Utility when I try to set it up, but each time I try it asks me to “enter the password for the selected airport wireless device.”
I type in the password I use when I need to access the wifi (the “WEP” password I guess?), but it’s never accepted. I’ve tried this on 3 of the Macs.
After reading some relevant comments here, I confirmed this as the “Airport network password” with the Keychain on 2 Macs. My Keychain does not show a “Base station password” at all.
I typed it in on 3 different keyboards, no caps lock, etc.
I’ve tied adding “$” and using “public,” to no avail.
I’m assuming that the password it’s asking for is the same password same as WEP password, the one that’s used when a friend visits and wants to use my wi-fi instead of 3G. It’s my network password. Is that right? Or is there some other password needed? My Keychain does not show a “Base station password” at all.
It does this for the existing Extreme as well as the Express.
It asks for the password whether I try to update the firmware as directed (7.4.2 to 7.6.1 for the Express, 7.5.1 to 7.6.1 for the Extreme), or if I click “Manual” to set up the Express.
Same thing happens using the Apple Airport Utility App on my iPhone.
I did the factory res-et thing on the Express, and it showed up with a generic name described as “with factory-default settings” so then I clicked Continue. This brought up the box saying “Are you sure you want to switch wireless networks? Setting up this AirPort wireless device requires switching wireless networks. Switching wireless networks may interrupt your connection to the Internet.”
I don’t want to switch, I want to add the Express to the existing Extreme network, so I’m (ignorantly) hesitant to say yes. Besides, it will probably just ask for a password, so I’m back to square one.
I’m mainly working on a Second Gen MacBookAir (3,2), Intel Core 2 Duo with AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0xD1), Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.131.42.4) 802.11 a/b/g/n. But this situation is the same on multiple Macs and iPhones.
All my devices work fine on w-fi, but none can access the Airports using the password as mentioned above with the goal of updating firmware and setting up the Express.
So anyone have any suggestions for this issue the password problem?

Open Keychain Access /Applications/Utilities
Select Passwords on the left.
type base station in the search field top right corner of the window.
Right or control click the base station keychain then click Get Info
Select the Attributes tab.
Click: Show Password
Now, you can use that password or set up one of your own. If you want to create a new password right or control click the current base station keychain then click Delete.
Now open Airport Utility /Applications/Utilities
Select the base station on the left.
Click Manual Setup then select AirPort from the menu then select the Wireless tab
Type in a new password, then type it in again to verify.
Then select: Remember this password in my keychain
Then click Update.
If at some point you forget the password for your wireless network just follow the instructions for Keychain Access above. -
I have just updated to Lion and now my folders no longer show number of items on the bottom. Is there a fix for this? I allways found that handy. Now I have to click on an icon on the top, This is a backward step if that is now the only way to see the number of items. Am I missing something obvious?

In the good old days of Snow Leopard, an open Finder folder had a border along the bottom of the window which could show the number of items in that window and the total available space on the hard disk or partition that folder resides on. That bottom border is gone in Lion and those two bits of information are gone with it. Is that what you're talking about? If so, I'd like to learn how to get it back too and "Show Item Info" is not the way. -
My Airport 6.1 can't manage my base station. I need to use AirPort Utility 5.6 but i can't find the right download. I've been downloading several but it always after havingf instal the first 3 steps the same message: Airport utility....can't be installed... The version of OS X on this version
doesn't support this base station...
I need help please to find the correcte download so i can my wii-fii work as soon as possible (because my wife is making me crazy, she can't go on Facebook!!!! )

MikeUse AirPort Utility 5.6 which contains the features you need. It is compatible with Lion as well as Mountain Lion, however, the installer app will refuse to install it on Mountain Lion.
This dilemma is easily solved though. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist.

If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Mountain Lion will not allow you to delete its existing version of AirPort Utility. Just ignore it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist.
Note: For those with Leopard or Snow Leopard systems you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1 (this is confusing - a later AirPort Utility version for an earlier OS X version - but it is correct).

10.8.4 is throwing an error with this software: "Airport Utility cannot be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported"

I have an airport extreme 2013. Why does my airport utility sometimes display IP addresses and other times the names of the devices? I want it to always display the device names.
The utility has had less and less useful information .. it might be time to simply find a different utility.

This is very popular.. I do not know of what works well on Mac OS because i have installed 5.6 utility which of course has far more info than the later toy version. Plus using an Asus router which has excellent listing of all the clients.
Sometimes beating yourself up to make apple routers do what you want is easier solved with lateral thinking. -
i have my wifi in my home with secure connection when i get connected to it ,it asks me the password and when i entered it, it shows that unable to join the network why is this happening...........
You are right, but how could i send it to Apple? when the phone company first replaced my iphone they had in stock alots of iphones and they just sent mine back to Apple and gave me a new one, so all i did is to give them my phone, but now how could i sent it to Apple? and i cant send it by myself, and the store wont do that, its a lost for them.. so sending it to Apple wasnt an option from the begining.
and for the record, i dont think the store where i bought it is an authorized shop.. its just a store who boughts phone's from Apple in a low price and sells it in much more money.. -
Two airport express no longer show w time capsule in utility
did the latest update interfere with our two airport express. i did the Mac update install and neither of the airport express show in the configuration. we also had a power outage yesterday for about 5 hours. not sure which is the culprit but after doing the install and rebooting the entire system we still have no airport express devices showing anymore under the time capsule and their lights are solid yellow.
Factory reset them.. they have stopped boot.. (solid yellow) .. it must flash yellow or when setup correctly go to green.
And yes, Yosemite has the worst airport utility and network on any new OS ever released.. ever.. I mean Vista badness. -

Hi all, I'm scratching my head at this one.
For years I've had an Airport Express and it has worked fine. I was using it simply to stream music from iTunes on my PC as well as my iPhone and iPad to my home theater which is in a different room. I had a Linksys WRT150N wireless router, and the Airport Express would join my existing network and stream music via Airplay.
A few days ago I replaced my Linksys router with a Netgear WNDR3800, and the Airport Express no longer connected. I assumed I had to set it up again, but it is not even recognized by Airport Utility, so I can't get to the setup screen. I tried performing a soft reset, hard reset, and attaching the Airport Express to one of my Netgear's LAN ports via Ethernet cable, but it still won't show up in Airport Utility. The amber light just flashes on the unit and I can't access any setup screens.
Am I missing something obvious? All of the help tips assume the Airport Express at least shows up in Airport Utility. In my Airport Utility there is nothing to select and it says "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
I am running a PC with Windows 7 and using Airport Utility v. 5.6.1 for Windows.

-RobDid you try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable from your PC to the AirPort Express to see if AirPort Utillty could "see" the AirPort Express that way? This method will work virtually all of the time unless the Windows Firewall or the PC's anti-virus program is blocking the connection attempt from your PC to the AirPort Express.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless only, you need to remember that when you reset the Expess back to default settings, it is now producing a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
You must log on to the Apple Network xxxxxx wireless network first....no password is required.....and then open AirPort Utility so that your PC will establish a connection to the AirPort Express.
Once the AirPort Express has been configured to join your Netgear wireless network, you can log back on to your normal wireless network and all devices will be working with one another. -
Airport Express no longer shows in Airport Utility
I have had a lot of problems lately with my TimeCapsule and Airport Express. Neither have been showing in the Airport Utility. I had to do a hard reset and was eventually able to continue my backups, even though after the reconfig the TimeCapsule doesn't show again. I picked up the airport express to do streaming of audio and it worked great for about 6 weeks. I have done a factory reset on the device and it showed up for about an hour. I am looking at the AE and the light is green, but it doesn't show in the Airport utility and cannot get the speakers to show in my itunes.
Help!Ended up being a problem between my two routers conflicting with each other. Set up two different networks in the house and now all is happy.

I just purchased this new Airport Extreme after my older Airport went down. This Airport Extreme at times is super fast, but it gives me more headaches than the older version because it seems to drop its signal too often. Last week I was able to see my Airport Extreme in my Airport Utility and was able to configure it - now Airport Utility can't find any Airport Extreme, although, it shows that I have an internet connection. I was hoping that someone who knew how to do a nice easy network set-up could help me start from scratch so this is set up right. As of now, our home uses the wi-fi for 2 Wii consoles, a wi-fi printer, cell phones, and an internet connection for my MacBook Pro - not too many connections, but still my connection drops all the time, all day long for no particular reason whatsoever. I want to be able to have one good strong connection for my computer and the rest of the connections could be secondary. I would like if the secondary items used a password, but not the same password as the main connection. It seems to me like I'm not asking a lot, but I have no idea how to set this up because now I can't even find my Airport Extreme to configure it.
So, if anybody has some advice on the best way to set this up and how I would be able to start that process without being able to even detect my Airport Extreme, I would sure appreciate any effort to help me out on this.Is your profile up to date?? Lion is not so commonly used now.. but was a lot more reliable than Yosemite.
What modem do you have? Actual make and model is a big help.
What is the main router? Is the modem supplied by ISP? Is it a gateway device?
If you use the airport as bridge or router, I also need to know how it is connected into the system. Mostly people have it via ethernet to the main modem or router.. please confirm.
One very important point.. the Wii need WEP security at least for older models.. You must NOT change security on the Extreme.. It must be set to WPA2 Personal (or nothing if you live at least 2km from other humans).
So, if anybody has some advice on the best way to set this up and how I would be able to start that process without being able to even detect my Airport Extreme
reset to factory and you will get control back.
The best way to test is full factory reset.
Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer or iOS device with latest utility.
1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen6 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz for each band respectively.. with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem if you are using AE as main router but is a problem for when it is used in bridge.. you have to use dhcp reservation from main router or use static IP on the AE setup.
4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
6. If the AE is bridged and still having dropouts use a LAN port to connect to the main router instead of WAN.. we are finding the AE is problematic on the WAN port. -
After the Airport update today, Airport Utility 6.0 no longer sees my new Extreme or my 2 new Airport Express relay stations (same network); however, my internet is working and all Airports are green? I'm running Lion on my iMac and updated when Airport Utility prompted me to do so a few hours ago. After applying the updates is when Airport Utility stopped seeing my routers. But they are working? Thoughts?
Did you remember to completely power cycle the entire network?
You would want to do this after any update or change to the network.
If you did not do this yet......things are out of sequence.
Power off everything on the network.....all devices.....power down order is not important
Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Work your way out on the network starting each device about a minute apart
Check the network
