Airport Utility on iMac with Jumbo Frames can't read Airport configuration

My 24" iMac is connected to a Netgear switch (GS608 rev2) that supports Ethernet jumbo frames. My GigE Airport Extreme base station is also connected to the Netgear switch and is acting as a gateway for my cable modem connection. Here's the rough wired layout:
iMac--Netgear--Airport--Cable Modem
The iMac has jumbo frames enabled (MTU=9000) and can communicate fine to the Internet and other devices on my local LAN (including a Netgear NAS box also with Jumbo frames enabled).
Airport Utility on the iMac starts and discovers my 3 Airports (1 extreme + 2 express) but if I double click on one of them to configure it, the window says "Reading the AirPort Extreme configuration..." and hangs there never bringing up the setup screen. Printer jobs to the shared USB printer that worked before Jumbo Frames were enabled on the iMac are also failing. The same happens for the 2 Airport Express as well although I can still steam Airtunes music to them.
Any ideas what might be wrong ? Do the airports have problems negotiating with jumbo frame enabled Macs ?
My wireless MBA with std MTU can still communicate fine with the Airports.
Thanks,
E

None of Apple's Airports support jumbo frames.
The networking chip that Apple uses in the Airport Extreme has the capability to support jumbo frames, but it isn't an option that Apple has chosen to expose to the user. So you can't reliably use the Airports on a jumbo frame enabled subnet.
The likely reason the Internet is still working is that, unless your uploading, it's unlikely the iMac sent a packet in excess of 1500 bytes to the Airport. The Airport is always sending 1500 byte packets which your iMac wold receive fine regardless of what the MTU was set (well, unless it was set below 1500).
Some people do report success but I would be wary of their results, they may not have down/upped the interface so the MTU may have been listed as changed, but not yet actually changed to the larger MTU. No-one has actually posted a tcpdump -e capture showing an Airport actually sending/receiving packets in excess of 1500 bytes.

  • Airport Utility 5.2 and 5.2.1 cannot read /edit configuration of AEBS 7.2.1

    *THE PROBLEM ON my Mac:*
I am using an ethernet connection directly to a brand new AEBS from:
iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, 2BG RAM
    X 10.4.10
    airport turned off
Airport Utility detects the base station but cannot read the configuration to edit and setup. And displays the following error:
"An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Please make sure your AirPort base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-5)"
The AEBS does assign any machine connected via ethernet an IP address to allow internet access.
    *THE PROBLEM ON WINDOWS:*
I have the nearly the same problem when using my Windows XP pro laptop connected via ethernet using Airport Utility for Windows ver 5.2 and 5.2.1
Airport Utility detects the base station, but when attempting to access the configuration, the Error message is practically the same with a different error code:
"An error occurred while trying to access the base station. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6742
*STEPS ATTEMPTED TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM (w/out success):*
I have read the posts that say to turn off IPv6 on Mac, did that but with no success.
Others did a simple hard reset on the AEBS, I tried that too.
I've tried connecting to the AEBS directly with all other network devices (modem, other routers, etc) disconnected and turned off just incase there was some compatibly issue... no work. I even tried all the different ports.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Can I walk into a Apple retail store and ask them to check the the AEBS to see if they can access the configuration?
    Just to be fair...
(For people who have only read this post, turning off the IPv6 worked for some people, and just doing a hard reset for others).

I finally figured it out. I had exactly the same problem when Airport Utility detected the base station but could not read the configuration to edit and setup, displaying the following error:
"An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Please make sure your AirPort base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-5)"
I tried everything (Unfortuantely it is impossible to consult to an Apple genius around here). Even the hard reset didn't work. That is what I did: I pulled off the power cord, and put it back again WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE RESET BUTTON with a pin. Only after that the amber light went on twinkling, and I could access it via the Airport utility. All the settings were reset so I just had to reconfigure it. Hope it works for you too.

  • Airport Admin Can't Read my configuration on my base

I'm trying to open up a port for this website that I go to where I download music. I can make my changes on my mac in the network settings but when I go to the Airport Admin to make the change there to my wireless configuration, I get a message saying the "admin can't read the configuration for the base..."
I'm able to get on line and have no problems there.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

Shall we assume your network consists only of a cable/dsl modem, an Airport Express, and a Mac?
There are only a few things that can cause this error message, but the most common among them is having installed non-Apple firewall software or "internet protection" software or VPN client software on the Mac. Make sure all such software is disabled or uninstalled before running the Airport Admin Utility.
If you still have problems, do a factory default reset of the Airport Express per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
...then reconfigure the device from scratch.

  • Can't read AExp Configuration- is it dead?

Hi- had a network with an AEBS connected to the internet and an AExp as a client connected to my stereo for streaming music. All was working perfectly. I moved apartment- renamed network. At the same time I got a new Powerbook so moved from Panther to Tiger.
The network is fine for internet access, but I the AExp has stopped working. I can see it in AAU, and in iTunes it is an option to select. However:
    1. In iTunes if you select it you get a box trying to connect which gives up after about a minute or two
    2. In AAU it sees it but when you hit configure it waits for a while before coming back and saying it can't read the configuration
I've tried a factory reset. Was able to rename it, but back to the old problem.
I've tried to install new firmware- again, same problem- it sees it but can't update the firmware. Have also tried to connect via an ethernet cable to update and configure- but no joy.
Is it dead? I think I'm within warranty by about two weeks

This all suggests the problems are being caused by an incorrect network setup - not a defective Airport Express.
Make sure your cable/DSL modem is cabled to the AEBS ethernet WAN port (the one labelled with the "circle of dots" icon). Some people make the error of connecting the modem to the AEBS LAN port - which won't work properly.
Also, check the configuration of the AEBS with the Airport Admin Utility - make sure that (under the Network tab) you have checked the boxes to "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT".
When setting up the Airport Express with the Airport Admin Utility, select to set up the Airport Express to "join" an existing wireless network. Do NOT select the option to have the Airport Express "extend" an existing wireless network - unless the intent is to use the Airport Express to increase the wireless range of the AEBS.

  • Airport Utility fails with Jumbo Frames enabled.

I have an iMac running 10.6.4 and Airport Utility Version 5.5.1 (551.19). A few weeks ago I enabled Jumbo Frames for some wired gigabit testing. I forgot to change back to 1500 MTU. Tried checking an Airport Setting with the Utility and it discovers the Airport Express (non-gige) but cannot retrieve the configuration. I manage the Airport via ethernet. Changing back to 1500 MTU fixes the issue. Is this expected? The odd thing is that printing works fine to the printer attached to the Airport even at 9000 MTU.

  • 27" iMac with SSD only: can you add a Hard drive later on?

I'm thinking of ordering a BTO 27" i7 iMac with onl the SSD, but am wondering if it will then have the internal brackets or space to take a secondary hard drive should I choose to install one later on?
Yes, I'm comfortable opeing up an iMac.  I considered ordering just the HDD model then adding an SSD later on, but the steps for that seem more involved, taking out many more components.

Better to order it with both the SSD and a 1 or 2T SATA, because
    1. You could void your warranty.
    2. iMac's built after 2009 can only use certian drivers with specific built in thermal sensors.

  • I have new iMac with Lion installed; can I get a free upgrade for my MacBook Pro?

    Hello
I recently bought a 27" iMac with Lion installed.  Should I be able to download the upgrade for my MacBook Pro without paying.  If so what should I do.  If I go to the App Store I'll end up paying £20.99
    Any help gratefully received
    margaret

    Margaret,
No you will need to purchase the upgrade. However if you own other Macs you want to upgrade once you have purchased Lion then you can upgrade the additional machines. Of course the additional machines must be using the same Apple ID. As long as the additional machine's meet the minimum system requirements listed below you are all set.
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Intel iMac with failed LogicBoard - can I use it as display for my MacMini?

I have a Intel iMac with failed logic board (the display comes up while booting sometimes and sometimes, it doesn't). I bought a Mac Mini afterwards. I connected it to a Dell monitor with HDMI and the results aren't great. I experience interminttent video losses (Grains on screen every 1 minute or so).
So, I am now thinking about using my failed intel Imac as a display. Will it work?

No, the failed imac is dead until you replace the logic board.

  • Attaching USB Drive - Can't read AP configuration file, kills internet

    Current network:
    Airport Extreme (Sim Dual-Band)
    Mac Pro (wired Ethernet)
MacBook Pro (wired or WiFi N)
    MacBook (WiFi N)
    2 x iPhones (WiFi G)
Airport Extreme in use for several months with no problems. All Macs can read/write it's configuration.
I hooked up a 1TB My Book USB HD to the Airport Extreme via USB. All three Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook) could see and read/write to the new drive. The Airport Extreme appeared in Airport Utility on all three Macs. Wired, WiFi N + G internet continued to work great... however none of the Macs could read the configuration file of the Airport Extreme. If I unplugged the USB drive all the Macs could read and write to the configuration file.
I plugged the USB drive back in and left it overnight. This morning, everything continued to work, with the exception that none of the computers could read the configuration of the AP.
Around 10am today the Macs/iPhones could no longer connect to the internet. I disconnected the USB drive and now the internet works again.

  • Why Can't I upload Air Extreme Utility on iMac with Mountain Lion?

I purchased an Airport Extreme and didn't  install it until after I upgraded to Mountain Lion.  When I try to upload the cd disk utility an error message pops up and says the hardrive/software is not compatible and I can't continue.
    Can someone help me.

    The iMac should have WiFi.
Open System Preferences and go to Network.
    Select WiFi
Enable the "Show Wi-Fi status in menu bar" if you want to always see what your connection state looks like.
If the button says Turn Wi-Fi On, click it.
In the Network Name, look for a network that has a bunch of random-looking characters and numbers (I can't remember what format the default network has).
Select it. You should then be able to connect to and configure your airport extreme with Airport Utility.
If no-go, then connect a cable between the Airport Base Station and your iMac (temporarily to get it set up).
Once connected, you should be able to see and configure the base station in Airport Utility.

  • If I replace my desktop iMac with a laptop, can I still use the desktop as a screen on occasion?

I'm planning to replace my existing iMac and old MacBook with a new Macbook pro. This would be my first time without a dedicated desktop computer. I was wondering if it would be possible to easily hook up my laptop to the old iMac and use it as a larger monitor for those times I want the big screen.

Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and Mid 2011 and Late 2012 iMacs can be used as external displays > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302 Late 2009 and Mid 2010 21'5-inch iMacs and older iMacs can't be used as an external display.
If you have a Late 2009 or Mid 2010 iMac, buy a Mini DisplayPort cable to connect your MacBook Pro to the iMac, and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac. If you have a Mid 2011 or Late 2012 iMac, buy a Thunderbolt cable.
If you have an iMac which isn't compatible, use an application like ScreenRecycler, which allows you to use your iMac as an external display

  • New imac, lightroom and cs3 can't read NEF files?  What to do

Adobe support is down so I am here for help from all of you. I don't have a clue what bridge is or whether I need to use both bridge and Lightroom. Anyway, I will be importing nef files from a D300 to an external drive onsite with a windows xp pro laptop and connecting the external drive at home to edit etc..
    Any help, please?
    Sheryl

What kind of filesystem is on the external hard disk? It might have to be FAT32 for the iMac to be able to import from it. NTFS support is not very good on Mac OS X. You might have to copy the files first manually to your internal harddisk and then have lightroom move them into the folder structure.
