Yes. The AirPort Utility can access the AirPort or Time Capsule either by wireless or wired connection from a PC.

I want to connect a Windows PC to an existing Airport Extreme router via ethernet connection. Is there any utility required or can I just plug into the router? The router is already set up and working with existing iMacs.

thanks for the info. I found apple utilty software on this windows 7  PC but I guess it is not required for sharing  internet on exisiting apple extreme. Am I correct that I can remove this apple software?

  • Airport Extreme set-up - Ethernet connection ok but wifi connection doesn't see the internet

I'm trying to set-up a new (5th Gen) Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to replace an existing TRENDnet router.
It's connected to a Motorola cable modem with Optimum internet service.
When I hard wire my laptop (Windows) through ethernet I get internet access. However when I try to connect via wi-fi on the laptop the Airport Utility displays 2 errors: Internet not available and No DNS server.
When I try to connect my ipad, when I select the Wi-fi network I see the network and it tries to connect but continues to cycle, with the wi-fi icon appearing in the top line then disappearing before returning. In the Airport utility on the iPad I see the same issues listed as on the laptop.
In the airport utility under the internet connection, "Connect using" is set to "ethernet" and "connection sharing" is set to "Off(Bridge mode)"
    Appreciate any help.
    thanks

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

Absolutely sure.. There is no connection at all.. reset is only the router side of the TC.
For the hard disk to be erased you need to access the airport utility disk page.. request erase and confirm the operation.
    2) I can access to time capsule by ethernet but I am not able to input the corret setting by myself
    Thank you again
I am uncertain why if you have access you cannot change settings.. but that is why you reset things so any of those problems should be fixed.
Here is the Apple info on reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
And here is the quote from the horse's mouth so to speak.
Factory default reset: Perform this reset if you wish to repurpose the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule and want to remove all personal profiles and settings first. This reset resets the device to its state when you first purchased it. Data stored on internal or external hard drives connected to the device will not be erased. If you choose, you may manually erase the hard drive using AirPort Utility.

  • How to get Airport Utility display name of connected devices ?

    Hello,
I would like to see what devices are connected on my Time Capsule.
    Usually, Airport Utility  shows:
    - MAC address, IP address and client ID in DHCP tab
    - MAC address in wireless client tab with signal level plotted on graphic
So, it's a little awkward, but you can assume that:
    - wired devices are connected if they show in DHCP tab
    - wireless devices are connected if they show in Wireless client tab. Then you can assume what wireless device it is, using the MAC address as identifier and reading client ID
Usually client ID are plain readable, like "iPhone Bob", "Mac of Sarah", etc...
Sometimes there is a third party manufacturer cryptic info.
Sometimes there is nothing. For example with my Canon printer
With time, i've learned to know what MAC address my devices are, and consigned them in a list; but i found it painful to go to my list of devices and retrieve them with their MAC adresses. I would like airport utility to make this association, like they do for apple devices
    So my question is:
Is there any file that i can edit to associate the Mac address of the device with the name i want ?
I suppose there might be some hosts file somewhere ?
    thanks

I've found an xml config file in ~/library/application Support/Apple/Airport/
    There is a
                                                      <key>hostname</key>
                                                      <string>Canon Printer</string>
missing, that I have added. Now all DHCP devices have disappeared in Airport utility (but are still connected); i guess they will reappear once the dhcp bail has been renewed, (in one day) but that won't change anything, as this xml file is likely an output, not an input.
    I'll keep you posted

  • Can airport be setup with an ethernet connection?

I'm having challnges setting up my Airport express via ethernet cable connection directly to my router.  It will setup wirelessly no problem, but I occasionally get dropouts when streaming music and I'm hoping to remedy that with a direct cable connection.
I believe I have to turn the wireless option off via utility, which I did, but still having issues - can anyone provide some insight as to the proper settings to connect it via ethernet cable?
Here is my setups if it helps:
Airport express, model A1264 (which is 2nd gen I believe)
Cisco router (provided by my intenet provider)
    Macbook Air, running 10.8.5
    Airport utility version 6.3.1
    Thanks!
    Phil

AirPort Utility 5.5.3 will work fine for that.
Reset the Express back to factory default settings as follows:
Power off the Express for a few minutes
Then, hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for another 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Cisco router to the Ethernet port on the Express
Open up AirPort Utility 5.5.3, click on the AirPort Express, and click Continue
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Express and password, etc.and click Continue
Choose the "Join" option, then click Continue and then click the option for the Express to disable the wireless and have the Express connect to the  the network using Ethernet, then click Continue
Review the settigns and click Update. Allow a minute for the Express to restart.
You may now need to restart both the Cisco router and the Expess and you should be all set.

Unfortunately, you are getting incorrect advice here. Might be a good idea to start a new post, since the original thread is long out of date.
First, please confirm that you have a compatible Express with the AirPort Extreme. This would be either the current A1392 version.....or the previous A1264 version.
Next, we need to confirm "how' you want to extend, since you do not mention this in your post.
Are you planning to "extend" by connecting the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet connection (highly recommended).....or.....are you trying to "extend" by having the Express try to connect wirelessly to the AirPort Extreme?

  • How does AirPort Utility communicate with remote/relay AirPorts?

    1. Wireless case: Does the AirPort Utility always try to communicate with remote/relay AirPorts directly, or does it use the network WDS when another AirPort provides a stronger signal? If it's the former option, this might explain why people have problems sometimes configuring distant AirPort base stations in WDS setups. If it's the latter option, problems with configuring a distant AirPort might be caused by improper configuration of the AirPort providing the strongest signal (presumably, the nearest).
    2. Ethernet case: When one attempts to configure an AirPort via Ethernet, does it matter whether the AirPort is configured to connect to the internet via Ethernet (vs. wirelessly)?

    Thanks for the replies Bob

  • Airport Extreme-Airport Utility SAYS I'm connected to internet but I'm not

Have several apple computers connected via ethernet to ATT DSL; was using a Netgear router...but it was SLOW SLOW SLOW to open new internet pages: trouble shooting with AT&T proved that when I hooked my computer direct to modem, internet speed was FAST; so problem was Netgear router.
So I hopped to Apple store and bought Airport Extreme. Completed setup per instructions...Network preferences says I am connected to the internet, the Airport Utility says I am hooked up to the internet; proper lights are ON for both the modem and Airport Extreme unit, yet when I click on Safari it says I am NOT connected to the internet....ummmmm...I have no idea what to try next...any ideas, please????

I realize that I made a slight error in my initial description; all the computers are attached to a switch, which is in turn attached to the Airport Extreme which is in turn attached to the modem.
Thanks for your speedy reply!!! My husband says we are not using a PPPoE connection, but rather a DHPC connection, so the PPPoE senario doesn't apply.
    Any other ideas????
    Thanks, Barb

  • Extremely slow Internet over Airport, good speed with Ethernet

I've been using an airport extreme router (802.11n) for a while and recently I've noticed an incredible slow Internet over wifi. When I do a speed test it shows numbers like 200 kbps and I have a 10 mbps cable Internet connection. When I connect the ethernet from the modem it's perfect speed. Obviously Airport is slowing down my Internet connection. I tried resetting the Airport by pressing the reset button at the back, and it worked perfectly for a while. But after a few days it got back to slow Internet. Anybody have any idea?

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but I came across some changes (purely by experimentation) that may help. I hope so, at least...
I opened the Airport Utility and I swapped channels. The default is channel 6, but every other WiFi router defaults to this channel, too. I changed my Airport Extreme to use channel 3 (as well as my Airport Express), and now things are back to what I would have expected for an 802.11g connection.
I will offer the suggestion that those of you with the same Internet slow-down observed on their iMac G5's try swapping channels. If you have an expanded WiFi home network vis-a-vis an Airport Express, be sure to update it first before you update your Airport Extreme.
    Best wishes and good luck!

  • Airport express setup with iPad and no computer -- possible?

In September I will be staying a week in Germany in an apartment that lacks wireless but does have a broadband LAN connection. I would prefer not to take my MacBook Pro and, instead, rely on my iPad 2. But there's the rub: no way to connect via ethernet. I do have an Airport Express I could take with me. Is there a way to use it, creating my own wireless network, without having a laptop with me and using Airport Utility to set it up? Or am I stuck with lugging my MacBook Pro?

Is there a way to use it, creating my own wireless network
What I do with my Airport Express is to configure it to create a wireless network using DHCP at home before I leave, and then wherever I am, I just plug it in to the network via ethernet cable and turn it on. The Airport Express will grab an IP address from the ethernet network and create its own network that you can connect to.
So far, that has worked for me everywhere I have been.
From reports it appears iOS 5 will have the ability to configure an Airport Express, but we don't know the release date of that.

  • No Internet with Airport Express - Internet with ethernet

    I have achieved frustration.
I have searched and searched the forums for the answer to this, and all I find is "reset the modem"
    iMac
    OSX 10.6.1
    Airport Extreme
    Airport Utility on iMac
    Arescom Netdsl 800 modem
    Qwest ISP
I can connect to the Airport Express, seamlessly with the Airport Utility.
However, I do not have Internet.
If I take the ethernet cable out of the Airport Express and plug it directly into the iMac, I have lightning fast Internet.
Can anyone help me out? Can anyone point me in a direction?
    Thanks,

I don't see anything unusual with the modem information that would prevent a normal installation.
Try a factory reset on the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) as follows:
Pull the power for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the AEBS back in to power
Release the reset button after approximately 8-10 seconds
Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN (circle icon) port on the AEBS and use AirPort Utility to reconfigure the device. The main settings that you will choose are Connect Using "Ethernet" and Connection Sharing would be "Share a public IP address"
It's possible that you may get a Double NAT error notice. You can click to ignore this warning.
    See if that might help.

  • Airport cancels networkinga direct ethernet connection from connecting to I

With Airport turned on in the top menu bar, not only does it fail to connect to the Internet, but also it keeps

oops... typing on someone else's keyboard and it is flaky. Try again...
but also it keeps a direct ethernet connection from connecting. As soon as I turn off Airport, it connects fine. What's this all about?

  • Intel iMac won't talk to airport via airtunes when ethernet connection's on

i have noticed with my new intel iMac that I cannot surf the internet via Ethernet cable AND send music from iTunes via airTunes to my airport express right next to my stereo. in order to be able to connect to the external loudspeakers i have disactivate ethernet connection in the systems preferences.
on my old TiBook this works perfectly fine...!!
    anyone have some help?

I would suggest you goto your network preferences and from the location drop down menu choose edit locations. Then click the + sign and add a new network location.
Then connect via ethernet and using dhcp do you get an IP address from the router?

  • Airport Utility fails with Jumbo Frames enabled.

I have an iMac running 10.6.4 and Airport Utility Version 5.5.1 (551.19). A few weeks ago I enabled Jumbo Frames for some wired gigabit testing. I forgot to change back to 1500 MTU. Tried checking an Airport Setting with the Utility and it discovers the Airport Express (non-gige) but cannot retrieve the configuration. I manage the Airport via ethernet. Changing back to 1500 MTU fixes the issue. Is this expected? The odd thing is that printing works fine to the printer attached to the Airport even at 9000 MTU.
