Airport Utility Sometimes shows Solid Line, Sometimes Dotted

I have a wifi network comprising of the following:
Apple Time Capsule receives internet connection from Fibre Optic Modem. Time Capsule has an Airport Extreme connected via a wired connection and an Airport Express connected wirelessly. Both the Extreme and Express are set up in Bridge Mode to extend the existing network to different areas of the house.
I am experiencing what appears strange and confusing to me so am seeking your support. When I am in the room where the Airport Extreme is, Airport Utility shows the Extreme as linked to the Time Capsule via a solid line (ie. a wired connection which it is). When I move into another area of the house, Airport Utility then shows the Airport Extreme as connected via a dotted line (ie a wireless connection which it is not).
What does this mean? I have two devices hardwired to the Extreme to ensure a reliable connection for them.
Many thanks,
Pierre

I would say the utility is simply failing to see the network correctly.. this is not uncommon.. and as you go to later OS it gets worse..
I am constantly battling to keep my Airport Utility to show the network and I pretty much ignore it if it shows it wrongly or more commonly not at all..
I find a change of the computer from 2.4ghz to 5ghz (since I have named the two wireless bands differently I can control it better).. I will see the utility instantly jump back to life.. even though there was nothing wrong beforehand and internet was working perfectly it still refuses to show the network.
If you run Yosemite.. expect it to be much worse.. Mavericks at least still has a working DNS system.

The utility has had less and less useful information .. it might be time to simply find a different utility.

This is very popular.. I do not know of what works well on Mac OS because i have installed 5.6 utility which of course has far more info than the later toy version. Plus using an Asus router which has excellent listing of all the clients.
Sometimes beating yourself up to make apple routers do what you want is easier solved with lateral thinking.

  • Airport utility only shows disc and not airplay

airport utility only shows disc and not airplay

Actually......IF......one is using an older 5.x version of AirPort Utility......AND.....an AirPort Express, a Music icon is displayed at the top of the screen. If you click the Music icon, there are settings to enable AirPlay and establish a password for the service.
The newer Mac 6.x and iPad and iPhone versions of AirPort Utility automatically enable AirPlay, but display no settings for this.
Since ralphington is using Mavericks (10.9.4), there are no controls for AirPlay displayed in his version of AirPort Utility.

  • HT1218 My AirPort Utility is showing that it's not connected.  It has been working fine.  What do I do?  I've checked my internet connections and they are working.

My AirPort Utility is showing that it's not connected to the internet.  It has been working fine until now.  I am connected and can't figure out why it's saying this.  Please help!

    Hello utfan5
Try resetting up the AirPort base station to see if it resolves the connectivity issue. Also make sure you are using the recommended settings to connect to the internet.

  • In Airport Utility, Extreme shows "USB Power" Status

I've connected a powered USB hub to 2 external, self-powered HDDs and plugged it in to the Airport Extreme ( AE ) USB port: neither drive shows up with this configuration; whereas they both do ( respectively ) if plugged in directly ( bypassing the hub ).
A status message on the AE within Airport Utility states that "...a device has been connected that requires more power than this base station can supply..."
    Huh? It's a powered hub…
I'm at a loss—could the hub be underpowered or defective?

could the hub be underpowered or defective?
Yes. Suggest that you try a different brand.

  • Graduated Filter doesn't show guide lines or dots

I'm used to using the three lines that the graduated filter shows to determine how extreme my adjustments will be. But about three months ago, this stopped showing up. I've scoured the Internet and checked the settings, to no avail. I've been guess-and-checking it since then, but it's difficult. Also, the little circles showing where I've applied graduated filters don't show up when I click on the filter tool. So, once I make a filter I cannot change or delete it independent of going back in my history.
Any help would be greatly apprecaited!

At the left bottom corner of the image there are two small triangles. Click on them and you'll get a fly-out menu. Select <Always> and the pin and the guide lines will show. ee screen shot

  • Just set up my TC after not using it for a year. I've moved in that time, so naturally my IP address has changed. My question is, why does my airport utility still showing the old IP address?

And does this mean that my internet is still coming from the AT&T router, or from my TC?

    Is the IP address 10.0.1.1?

  • Dotted lines in Airport Utility

The utility shows my Airport Extreme, and my two Airport Expresses (both set in bridge mode) connected to it by dotted lines.
What is the meaning of the dotted line connections in the Airport Utility display?
When I look at the clients on one of the extremes I see the computer on which I am running the utility. Shouldn't that be a solid line then?
NVM found an explanation. Dotted means wi-fi.
Now if I could just figure out how to delete this post that would be great!

Dotted lines indicate a wireless connection between the AirPort routers.
A solid line between AirPort routers would indicate a wired Ethernet connection.
Your computer will not be displayed on the graphic in AirPort Utility. Only an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express or Time Capsule will be displayed as devices in the AirPort Utility "system layout" screen.

  • Problems with WDS, no Airports showing up in Airport Utility

    Hello,
    I have 2 AEBSn.
#1 is attached to the cable modem; #2 is approx. 25 feet away (same floor), to which a headless Mini is attached via Ethernet.
The AEBSn are in WDS mode on the same channel, same WPA2 key, same radio mode.
Once set up, the WDS only seems to last 1-2 days, after which time Airport utility will show one router, but not the other. I have to hard reset (hold in switch in back while plugging power cord back in) both and re-configure to restore functionality. Our longest "up time" has been 40 hours, but is often 8 hours or less.
    Other problems:
    1. Connected wirelessly right now, running Airport Utility on my MBP shows no AEBS while the PBG4 (wireless) and mini (Ethernet) show both.
    2. Occasionally, the networked computers time out when connecting to a URL. DNS servers aren't at issue, since I can ping, say, www.apple.com successfully. Restarting computers, rebooting routers doesn't work- only hard reset.
    3. Issue (#2) is sometimes resolved by switching from static IP to DHCP, but not always.
THanks in advance for helpful input. I'm pretty tired of Apple's Level 1 support suggesting that I change wireless channels (on ch8, only ch11 and ch1 nearby, and weak signal at that) or resetting Safari.

I solved the connectivity problem, but not in a way I can explain yet.  I opened Airport Utility on my wife's older MacBook and both my Expresses showed up.  I had connected directly via Ethernet cable to one, but it found the other wirelessly.  Her versions of OX10 and Airport Utility are identical, so all I can figure is I have some setting different on mine.
My version now can see all Airports, but I haven't tried to reconfigure anything with mine again.  It's working, so don't F with it.

  • I have connected a new time capsule to a dsl modem.  It doesnt see the internet. Airport utility says: Disconnected. But it isnt. Internet tab shows PPPoE. Must I enter Account Name or Password? If so, where do I find them? If not, what do I do?

I have connected a new Time Capsule to a DSL modem using an ethernet cable . The modem is working fine and connected fine. But the Time Capsule doesnt seem to be talking to the modem.  If I click the internet Icon in Airport Utility  it shows Disconnected. If I click the Time Capsule icon and go to the internet tab it shows  Connect using PPPoE. Is that what it should be? In the box below there is place for an account name and password. DO I need to filll these out and if so what do I put there--information about the Time Capsule of informationabout the Modem? And where do I find the information.
Or am I completely on the wrong track.

Thanks. The modem is a Speedtouch ST585  v6. How do I know whether it is in adsl bridge?  Also this is a modem-***-router. Does that make a difference?
If you did not put it in bridge then it is not in bridge..
Connect a computer directly to the modem.. open the browser to either 192.168.1.254 or 10.0.0.138 (if neither of those work you will have to check the IP address your ISP has set).
BTW who is your ISP and do they allow PPPoE.. for instance most ISP in UK do not use pppoe so you have no choice but to run the 585 as a router. In which case bridge the TC
Anyway.. open the setup configuration in the Thomson and select a template that says bridge.. run through the wizard and it will then bridge the modem.
And I am using Airport Utility 6.0. How do I get the earlier version?
By reading the site link I just gave you.. downloading the utility and running it on your computer. Or simply google to 5.6 lion airport utility... that is the way I find things when I don't have the link memorised.
Finally, AIrport Utility shows a number in a red dot next to the time capsule icon, currently 2. What is that for? What does it tell us?
Firstly download the useful utility.. but the dots tell you something is wrong and preventing the TC from working.. if you open the utility it should tell you what the errors mean.. I cannot tell you what they are, but it is likely to be no internet connection and pppoe has failed.

  • Only show my airport express station in airport utility

I go to a university and last year I didnt have this problem but when i go to airport utility it shows all base stations connected to the internet is their a way to hide all the base statations from me seeing them and them seeing me?

You would need to enable NAT & DHCP on your AirPort. Most likely this will give you a "Double NAT" warning but it would put any computers connected to your AirPort on a different subnet. However, the AirPort itself would still have to be on the same subnet as the University's network in order for it to access network resources or the Internet (if provided).

  • Is AirPort Utility Working Properly?

I have a Time Capsule (3rd gen) and also an AirPort Express.  The two are linked by Ethernet cables.  Prior to installing AirPort Express the AirPort Utility showed TC with a green dot.  Once the APE was installed AirPort Utility either shows no TC with APE connected directly to the Internet, or else shows TC connected to Internet but with a yellow triangle, and the APE linked to the TC but with the green dot.  Everything seems to work ok.  Is there some problem with AirPort utility?

    I just upgraded to Yosemite.
Ok.. there is your problem.. Apple have done it again. They introduced a new OS without clearing out a fraction of the bugs reported in the beta.. welcome to the Beta testers program.. If it is all working properly. Which I do gather is the case..
Everything seems to work ok.  Is there some problem with AirPort utility?
Then ignore the Airport Utility as the great load of rubbish it is .. !!
Use the airport utility on iOS.. or even windows.. it simply is better than this.
The installer for Mavericks is working to install 5.6 utility into Yosemite.
    http://coreyjmahler.com/2013/10/24/airport-utility-5-6-1-on-os-x-10-9-mavericks/
That might well work better.. heck it couldn't be worse.

  • Airport Utility says Mac connected to unkown Time Capsule

    Hi,
I have an issue with Airport Utility (6.3.2) and a Time Capsule in my local network. This is happening at work where I have an iMac connected to the local LAN via an Ethernet connection. Wireless airport is switched off. When I open Airpot Utility, however, it shows my computer connected to a Time Capsule somewhere in my local network. See the image below.
None of my colleagues, nor the system administrator, knows to whom that Time Capsule belongs to nor were it is located. If I go to System Preferences > Network and I disable the Ethernet port ("Configure IPv4", select "Inactive") my internet connection is gone, but Airport Utility still shows the Time Capsule as connected to my iMac.
The only manner in which Airport Utility will show the Time Capsule disconnected is by unplugging the Ethernet cable.
So, I have a few questions because I could not find the answers anywhere and my system administrators have no idea what is going on (they are specialised in Windows environments):
    1) The fact that Airport Utility displays a green light on the Time Capsule does it mean it is connected to my computer? If so, how can I disconnect it? Clicking on the Time Capsule icon I am asked for a password I obviously don't know. So I cannot acess its configuration pane.
    2) How do I know if there is any data traffic between my computer and the Time Capsule? I cannot find out its IP or MAC addresses (Airport Uitility will not show them to me).
    3) Is it possible that the internet traffic of the owner of the Time Capsule is being re-routed through my computer? My internet connection is indeed more unstable and slower than that of my colleagues (using Windows or Linux) but I can't figure out why.
    Thank you.
    iMac 21" (Late 2012, iMac13,1)
    Mac OS X (10.9.5)
    Airport Utility 6.3.2

    1. It isn't connected, but Airport Utility sees in on the network.
    2. There shouldn't be any data traffic unless you initiate it.
    3. Highly unlikely.
