AirPort Utility "wizard" setup resets my password

Hi,
I've been having a bizarre problem setting up my Airport network and would appreciate any advice!
Basically, after I set up my express to extend a wireless network created by my extreme, the Express's configuration password gets reset.
Here's the situation. I have two airports: an Extreme (the white square 802.11n one), and an Express. I'm trying to use the Extreme to create a wireless network (plugged into cable modem) and the Express to as a bridge (i.e. it will connect to the network wirelessly, and will allow me to plug a wired device into its ethernet jack).
I've setup the extreme, then, in AirPort Utility, selected the Express and went through the setup wizard (i.e. pressing continue rather than "manual setup"). I choose to extend an existing wireless network, I type in a name and password for the base station, and then both base stations restart.
Here comes the problem: I'd also like to set up AirTunes, so (after giving plenty of time for things to stabilize) I choose the Express then choose "manual setup". It asks for a password for the Express, but the one I set in the previous paragraph isn't accepted. I try again and again.
I ended up resetting the Express (by holding the press-it-with-a-paperclip button on it) and repeating the process, making extra sure to type the password carefully, but the same thing still happens... Basically, it seems that if I use the wizard (rather than Manual Setup) to configure WDS on the Express, then my password gets reset/unset.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi,
I understand that there are three separate names and passwords (more if you include airtunes and hard drive sharing, etc.) All three names and passwords are unique.
When I typed in the "name and password for the base station" I meant that I was asked for and typed in the new name for the express (to replace "Apple Network Something-in-hex") and the (new) password for the express. (The username/password for the Extreme was already in my keychain. I assumed that's why I was not asked for it...)
This same password is the one I'm unsuccessfully trying to use when I try to "manually configure"... Should I be doing something different?
-Mike

AirPort Utility is only for administering Apple's base stations.
To change the wireless network created by your iMac you would (on that iMac) open System Preferences-> Sharing and change the settings there,

  • Airport utility won't accept my password

My mom called me into her office downstairs to set up a password on our airport extreme and we ran into a problem. Airport utility will not accept the password. Is there a different password for the actual airport extreme or is it the same as the network password? Thanks a ton- Rainshine

The AirPort routers have two passwords.
One is a base station or device password, used to access the settings on the AirPort
The other password is a wireless network, used to join the wireless signal that the AirPort produces.
If you have forgotten a password, you can use a Soft Reset procedure to reset one or both passwords. See this Apple support document for details:

  • AirPort Utility Network Setup - Replace Router or Join Current Network?

I just got an AirPort Express and plugged it in.  The Airport Utility - Network Setup asks if I want to:
    1)     Create a new network
    2)     Replace an existing base station or wireless router with AirPort Express
    3)     Want AirPort Express to join my current network
I am not too advanced with computers, so I need to ask, what should I be choosing here?  There really isn't much in the manual about the topic.  I already have AT&T Uverse for my internet and get wireless internet access through them.  I got the AirPort Express so I could print wirelessly from devices to a printer that is hooked up to the AirPort Express and so I could create a guest network for visitors that want internet acess to whom I don't want to give my AT&T password.
    Thanks.

1.) Since the Airport Express is extending the Extreme Network, will my whole network now be single radio only network, since the Express only has one radio?
Although, your AirPort Express is 802.11n, it is not simultaneous dual-band. That means it can either extend the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radio but not both at the same time. So the AEBSn will still be broadcasting on both the 5 GHz (for 802.11a/n) and on 2.4 GHz (for 802.11b/g/n).
2.) What if both an 802.11g and 802.11n device connect to the Express' radio instead of the Extreme's for some reason, will this make both devices operate at 2.4GHz?
    Yes.
3.) What if an 802.11g device connects to the Airport Express' radio. Since this is now 2.4GHz, will it only now communicate with the Airport Extreme at 2.4GHz?
Assuming that you configured the AXn to extend the AEBSn's 2.4 GHz radio, it will only be able to communicate back to the AEBSn on its 2.4 GHz radio.

  • Time Capsule not responding in Airport Utility on setup after hard reset.

I have been trying to set up my Time Capsule after a hard reset.
I am seeing the Time Capsule in Airport utility with default settings, however when I choose continue to setup or manual setup it tells me I need to switch networks to continue and then gives me the following message.
BASE STATION ERROR: AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device.
The Time Capsule continues to work as a hub for devices connected to it but I am unable to see the hard disk or use the wireless functions. Any ideas?

Thank you. The computer is connected directly to the time capsule through ethernet and giving me those messages. I have tried resetting a couple of times to no avail. I guess I am starting to wonder if I have a problem with the Time Capsule which is only a year and a half old. As I mentioned I have number of devices connected through the LAN ports and they are all working fine. It is only the functionality of wirless and the hard disk that appears to be compromised.

  • After hard reset of time capsule, airport utility cannot setup again. "an unexpected error occurred. try again"

After starting airport utility, it searches and i select my time capsule. AU grinds for a minute and comes back with "An unexpected error occured. Try again."

    Hi Philjp,
If you are having issues connecting to your Airport Time Capsule, even after a factory reset, you may find the following article helpful:

  • HT3728 Time Capsule LED is solid Amber, will not show up in Airport Utility after any resets.  Ideas?

Went to update my TC after adding my AppleID to the "Back to Mac" menu and in the Airport Utility screen a meesage popped up saying "An error ocurred while reading the configuration" and the TC disappeared from the Airport Utility screen.  Now there is just a solid amber light.  Unplugging the unit for over a minute and then plugging it back in has the same result.  A soft reset does nothing, a hard reset does nothing, and a factory reset gets the amber light blinking but when I release the reset it goes back to solid amber.  None of these resets gets the TC to show up in the Airport Utility.
    I appreciate any help.  Thanks.
    Model: A1409 Time Capsule 2TB

The solid amber light is an indication that the TC cannot get out of startup mode, likely due to a power supply component failure.
Solid amber is not power supply.. it is a dead hard disk.. the TC cannot finish its boot if the hard drive is not working.
    Jeepaxle
If the TC is in warranty or you have applecare on any computer Apple should replace it..
Otherwise it is the poor WD green drive they now use..
Open the TC and replace it.
Sometimes a low level format will revive them.. but I never trust a drive again that died.. Look for a 2TB hitachi or Toshiba.. (same thing). Far better than WD green.

  • What about a ipdad airport utility for setup

Why not a ipad airort utility to create a LAN during traveling ?

Why not suggest this to Apple?
Here on a Community Support area, we're all users...just like you. So, we cannot answer regarding decisions made by Apple.

You also might want to make use of the "Profiles" feature of the Express. You can configure up to 5 different "profiles" to store the settings for different uses. So, you could have a "home" and "travel" profile, for example.

  • Airport utility asks for password after factory reset of Airport Extreme (spaceship), Why?

Hi,  I recently replaced my Airport Extreme (the older model shaped like a space ship, 802.11 b/g) with an Airport Express.  I tired to move the spaceship to a different room in my house to extend the wireless network, but it was not being recognized by the Airport Utility (v5.6).  So, I did a factory reset of the spaceship.  Now I can see it in Airport Utility, however when I try to configure it, the Airport Utility prompts me for a password.  It will not accept "public" as the password.  Any ideas?  Could keychains be the problem?  This is a 2009 MBP running 10.8.3.

    Great! Thanks for the update.
Out of morbid curiosity I went to my Mountain Lion Mac and downloaded AirPort Utility 5.5.3. I confirmed it will not install on Mountain Lion using OS X's usual package installer, but using the technique that follows I was able to install and run it on Mountain Lion. The only thing I could not verify is its ability to administer an older AEBS since I no longer have any to test.
The remainder of this post is for those who are willing to circumvent Apple's desire to use only current versions of AirPort Utility for reasons known only to them. Proceed only if you accept this as an unsupported workaround strictly for the purposes of administering an older Extreme on a newer Mac.
Prerequisites: A package extractor like Pacifist or unpkg will be required. Pacifist is shareware, unpkg is free.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
    Download unpkg here: http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Download AirPort Utility 5.5.3 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1390
Directions for Pacifist (I do not have screenshots for unpkg but the idea is similar):
After the .dmg file finishes downloading double-click it to mount the volume containing the metapackage. Control-click it and select Open With > Pacifist from the contextual menu:
You will get the following dialog:
The "unidentified developer" in this case is Apple. Click Open to open Pacifist.
Click the "reveal triangles" until you see AirPort Utility.app and select it.
    The next steps are important.
Select Extract To... from the toolbar as in the above screenshot. In the dialog that follows, choose Desktop since otherwise you will overwrite your existing, newer version of AirPort Utility in your Utilities folder which should not be deleted. Restoring it may not be trivial.
Authenticate, allow Pacifist to extract the app, then you can quit Pacifist.
You will now have AirPort Utility version 5.5.3 on your Desktop. Before you attempt to copy it to your Utilities folder though, be sure to rename it accordingly:
You can then drag it to your Utilities folder. Authenticate, and you will have it alongside later versions where they can peacefully coexist:
Use the newest version AirPort Utility to administer current production AirPort Base Stations, and older versions only as necessary for older AirPort Base Stations that cannot be administered any other way.

  • Airport utility 5.6  does not recognize my password

Here's the deal. I have Airport Extreme and Airport Express. I moved our TV temporarily from the family room to the the guest room. The Airport Extreme is still in the family room next to the modem. Internet works fine for the computers. I have a Sony BD DVD player that allows access to Netflix. Outsmarting myself I remembered my Airport Express (called "extender" by Airport utility) so I connected the Sony to the Express thinking I could get Netflix like I did when it was with Airport Extreme. Patience, please. So I go to AD and I see a discussion that says I need Apple 5.6 in order for Extreme and Express to work together. Aha! Problem solved! Wrong. Airport Utility will not recognize my password for Airport. Other folks can come over and I give them the password and no problem. I am totally perplexed. Help, please.

So now I have to try and find something called "device" for a password?
Please review my answer again. I advised that you needed to look for a listing in KeyChain Access for the AirPort Base Station password. Something like this, for example:
This is the password that you assigned to the AirPort Extreme device when you originally set it up.
Is there a way to do a complete hard reset for both wireless devices and start over?
If you want to delete the current settings for your AirPort devices and return everything to original factory settings, you can do so with a Factory Default Reset.
The instructions for this are found in this Apple support document:

  • HT204291 I can't remember the password for my airport utility speakers and it doesn't offer the option to re-set the password.

To play my I Tunes through my hi fi speakers, Airport utility is asking for a password that I don't know and it doesn't offer the possibility of changing the password.  How do I do this?
    Thank you,
    Yogi Tracy

In order to reset the password on an Airport or Airport Express, you need to do a factory reset on the device. You should be able to find that information in the manual.

If you need more help, you might be better off asking in the relvant forums:

  • Airport Utility asks for Password for Airport Extreme. Whaaa?

Found "Airport Utility" at Apple site today, and updated from "Airport Admin. Utility."
To do anything, it requests a password. Never had one or set one up for the Airport Extreme.
In Airport Utility, I tried resetting it and using "public" as the password, but that didn't work. I tried reconfiguring it and establishing the password through Airport Admin. and that didn't work.
At Airport Utility, it says I need to update from firmware 5.6 to 5.7, but I"m not sure if I'll just be mucking up the works if I can't go beyond the opening window without a password.
Anybody know how to work around this problem, please?

I suggest that you perform another "hard" reset of your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). It may take a few tries to make it "stick." This type of reset will erase the wireless encryption password and reset the base station administrator's password to the default: public.
If you are still being asked for a password and "public" does not work, you may need to go into the Keychain Utility to erase any previous passwords for your AEBS.

  • Airport Utility Base station password

    Hello
I have the Airport Extreme router and I have also installed the Airport Utility programme on my win7 machines for convenience.
The win7 wireless machines including the Apple macbook always prompts for a password ( As I set-up Airport Utility to work this way ) but whenever I open the Airport utility which I have installed on the wired Ethernet desktop win7 machines, the Airport Utility never prompts for a password.
My question is can I force the Airport Utility on the desktop machines to prompt for a password ?
When I open the base station and select manual setup, then under base station I have un-ticked remember password in my keychain and then updated this, but whenever I reopen the Airport Utility the tick reappears and the Airport Utility opens without prompting for a password.
I must again stress that the wireless machines always prompt for the password.
    Thanks

Your desktop machine has already stored the Base Station password, so unchecking the box that tells the PC not to remember the password that it has already stored is not going to work.
I don't know where Windows keeps stored passwords, but if you do, you will need to access that file and delete the Base Station password there.
If you don't know how to locate the stored password file on the PC to erase the password, then the simplest thing to do might be to set up a new Base Station password, and make sure that the box next to "Remember password, etc" is not checked when you click to Update the new settings in AirPort Utility.

  • Windows 7 airport utility does not recognize my airport extreme

My iphone connects to my airport extreme and the airport utility sees it. So does my ipad and my friends laptop.
When I use wifi or wired connection (to lan port) from Windows 7 laptop to my airport extreme. The airport utility does not "see the extreme.
    I've uninstalled/reinstalled the following:
    - bonjour
    - airport utility
    - itunes.
I've wasted 3 hours on this.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.....

    UPDATE
    * I located the IP address and admin password of the airport extreme and was able to log into to the (File / configure other) airport extreme.
    I believe it's a W7 bonjour issue.
As you can see in my attachments, Bonjour is installed however msconfig running services show it as stopped. I can't get it to start.
** How can I force bonjour to start? **
Here are my replies to your recommended steps:
What version extreme are you talking about? Actual model A1xxx from the base is a big help.
    - I forgot to check this
Step 1.. Ping.. Ping is your most important tool to find things on a network.
Open a command window and type ping 10.0.1.1 (or whatever is the current IP of the extreme).
    - Yes, I can ping it.
    Please turn off all firewalls.
    - Yes, firewall is off
Make sure the win7 is not in homegroup.
    - done.
Make sure win7 is set to home.. not work or public for location of the network.
    - done.
Step 2. .. This assumes you now have ping response.
In whatever airport utility you like, reset the extreme to use all SMB names.
    - WHERE do I make these changes?
