Airport Utility won't contact updates server...

I've already posted this in the Airport Extreme/Express forum, thought I'd try it here too...
I'm trying to update my airport express firmware, yet every time I tell it to look for updates, it says it cannot connect to the updates server, and that I should check my network settings.
Trashed the plist, checked the network interface order, nothing works... Obviously my connection is good.
Have two airport expresses, one G, one N in a WDS setup.
Anybody else having this problem?
It's always done this, and it's only worked once that I can remember.

Typically you check for firmware on an Airport Express Base Station by selecting it from the computer using the Airport Utility.app. When the utility finds the Airport Express unit(s) you select one and then in the Airport Utility Menu, you select "Check for Updates"
On my system this results in checking for both updates to the software and the firmware.
Is this the method you are using?

I just bought a new pc and for our internet connection we have an airport express. My laptop can connect to it but my airport utility won't recognize it. Even though it does connect to the internet about every 15 minutes the internet shuts off. What should I do?

If you've not yet tried, unpower the AppleTV for a minute or so and restart - this occasionally corrects issues.
If not and the software update seems to have caused an issue, go to the Settings menu and choose to Restore it (this will erase all settings) to reapply current firmware.
Alternatively try to do so via iTunes:

  • Windows - Airport Utility won't recognize Express plugged into Home stereo.

I am trying to set up the express to stream music to home stereo exclusively. I currently have a NETGEAR 108 Mbps (WGT624 v2) router set up on a Windows XP. Airport Utility won't recognize the device. Any ideas on how to make this thing work while keeping existing network? Thanks so much.

Let's double-check your AX's configure to receive audio via AirTunes.
Please reconnect the AX back to the Netgear before running the AirPort Utility.
Ok, compare your settings to the following within the AirPort Utility using Manual Setup:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing Netgear's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • How do you upload firmware to Airport extreme with the following message: This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. I'm using airport utility 6.0

The airport extreme at my parent's house has not had its firmware update in some time and it keeps dropping the internet connection and needing to be reset.
I went to update firmware and opened up airport utilities (I'm running airport 6.0 on Mountain Lion, 10.7.4).  Everytime I open the airport utility I get the following message: "
This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
I've followed the link and tried to update firmwares but none are available and the print says that airport utility will look to see if firmware are available and load them as necessary when prompted by user.
One link said the only way to solve this problem is open up Airport Utility 5.6. I tried to do this, but 5.6 is not supported on Mountain Lion and couldn't be opened up.
I'm getting the exact same message on my other computer, a Mac Air.
So basically, can't download new firmware and am stuck with a ****** airport extreme that needs to keep being reset, a factory reset, in order to use the internet, but then continues to give me the same message.
    Thanks!

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • New aebs and airport utility won't recognize my (2) airport express'

I have an new (n) aebs and can't get airtunes to work now. Only get flashing amber on the two ax and the new airport utility won't pull up the ax's, only the aebs. Have turned off ipv6 but no difference.

How are you connected? Meaning, how is the Mac
running the AirPort Utility attached to the new
AEBS(n) and the AX's? Your problem is likely that the
AX's are already named and configured to operate in
the old network, but your connection method doesn't
    provide visibility to them...
Thank you for posting back to me. I finally got them to work and your explanation I thinks explains to me what happened. (I got them up and running just before I saw your reply.) I unplugged both of them and connected them via an ethernet cable to the new aebs and also did a hard restart for both. They then showed up with their alphanumeric titles, not the titles I had given them. Airport Utility recognized them after that. Hopefully my experience and your explanation will help others too. Thanks again.

  • 13" Macbook dies after AirPort Utility 5.5.1 update

First a little background to pre-answer a few questions.
My Macbook has been acting up for the past few weeks, or about the time I updated to 10.6.5. last week i noticed a few additional updates became available and hoped they would resolve the issue. once updated, my Macbook rebooted and crashed immediately throwing up the multilingual screen of death.
I was unable to get past this screen, so i booted up with my retail copy of Snow Leopard 10.6. After running the First Aid tools in Disk Utility, I was still unable to boot. I then ran Drive Genius and it found a problem with the disk, but was unable to fix it.
I then ran SpinRite 6.0 and found two bad sectors near the beginning of the disk. SpinRite was able to repair the damage, however my Macbook was still unable to boot.
I went and purchased a new HD, then loaded it with my retail copy of Snow Leopard 10.6. After the install everything was worked great. I ran the update utility witch required a reboot after the installation of the updates. My Macbook rebooted and crashed immediately again throwing up the multilingual screen of death.
I then reloaded 10.6 as before, then installed each update one by one rebooting after each update was complete. 10.6.5, just fine, Safari, just fine, iTunes, just fine, Java, just fine, AirPort Utility 5.5.1, multilingual screen of death.
I then reloaded, and confirmed that the AirPort Utility 5.5.1 update was the cause for the crash.
Does anyone have the same issue, or found a good way to resolve this issue?
    Thanks!

    I doubt it.
You are having kernel panics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
Thanks for the input, however i meant that i preformed the same steps and as soon as i rebooted after installing the AirPort Utility 5.5.1 update, the multilingual screen of death is as far as i was able to get.
I've reinstalled 10.6, then updated everything except the AirPort Utility 5.5.1 update, without any trouble.
Thank you again for your input,

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • Airport utility 5.6 to update airport express won't load.

Do I just need to buy a new airport express? Using OSX 10.7.5 have an old airport express that I use to drive my home stereo system.

You can use the following workaround to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on a Lion or Mountain Lion Mac:
Be sure to read the caveats at the end.
Lion / Mountain Lion's package installer will refuse to install superseded versions of AirPort Utility. Instead you will need to use a package extractor such as Pacifist or unpkg. Pacifist is shareware, unpkg is free.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
    Download unpkg here: http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
When the AirPort Utility .dmg file finishes downloading, open it to expand and reveal the AirPortUtility56.pkg package installer file.
Directions for Pacifist (I do not have screenshots for unpkg but the idea is similar):
Open Pacifist and from its File menu, navigate to the package and open it.
Click the "reveal triangles" until you see AirPort Utility 5.6.app:
Select it and then click Install from Pacifist's toolbar. It will then be installed in your Utilities folder, and you can quit Pacifist.
The most recent version of AirPort Utility included with Mountain Lion should be used to configure 802.11n - capable AirPort Base Stations. Make no attempt to delete it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist. Use the older version only as necessary for older AirPort Base Stations that cannot be administered any other way.
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Lion / Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder instead of resorting to the above procedure. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Keep in mind that Apple's decision to abandon support for the original AirPort Express and AEBS was for reasons known only to them. Remember that you are using obsolete equipment, should some future OS X feature not work for you.

  • My airport utility won't upgrade

my airport stopped working and won't upgrade

Are you trying to use the disk that came with the express??
    It won't work.
If the version you downloaded is correct and still will not install manually install it.
This method is for later OS to install the earlier utility but it should work on older OS as well.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • Installed Airport Utility 5.6.1; now "Server Connection Interrupted"

Software Update just prompted me to install Airport Utility 5.6.1, which I did.  Since then Time Machine has done two backups, and both times I have received multiple messages saying "Server Connection Interrupted" and showing an icon of my Time Capsule.  I have always clicked ignore, and the backup has seemed to continue.  I hope the backups are accurate, but I don't really know.  All insights welcome.  Thank you.

Time Machine has been backing up without incident for a couple of days now, so I guess the problem must've been with my ISP and the timing with the update just coincidental.  Doesn't look as if anyone else has had a similar problem.

  • Airport utility won't download to pc says must have windows 7 but I do have windows 7

I just bought the airport extreme.  first tried to download the airport utility to my pc and it said I must have windows 7 or higher.  I have windows 7.

So now I was finally able to download the airport utility to my pc and the airport extreme is woking fine.  I openened the utility and it said I had an update to make.  tried to download the update and it says "works best with Windows XP SP3, Vista SP1 or later", I have WINDOWS 7, why won't this update work?  I was able to update the firmware.

  • Airport utility won't accept my apple ID

I just got an update on my Macbook Pro and when I rebooted it came up with Airport Utility. It said  could set up Back to My Mac. However Back to My Mac won't accept my apple ID. Also Airport says my Time Capsule firmware needs updating. But I can't seem to do this without my Apple ID, which I have repeatedly put in and it won't get accepted. I checked with ITunes so I know my username and password are correct - they work fine with ITunes. I would like to at least be able to upgrade the Time Capsule firmware. Please!
    Thanks for reading

The AirPort routers have two passwords.
One is a base station or device password, used to access the settings on the AirPort
The other password is a wireless network, used to join the wireless signal that the AirPort produces.
If you have forgotten a password, you can use a Soft Reset procedure to reset one or both passwords. See this Apple support document for details:
