Airport Utility won't recognize my new Airport Express

I see similar ports but don't understand the solution.  Just bought an Airport Epxress to use for AirTunes from my MacAir notebook running Lion.  Downloaded the right Airport Utility.  After plugging in the AE, the amber light was solid then just flashed.  The manual (pg 32) was no help.  Airport Utility finally recognized the AE and I was able to configure it. The utility showed my my wireless network and  asked me the WEP. I entered than and it said successful. Said window would stay open until AE restarted.  Never did.  I finally powered it off and on a couple of times.  Airport Utility cannot find it now. Just continues to flash the amber on and off.  The manual is kind of useless since it says to select the base station from the Airport Utility menu. I don't have anything to select.

How are you connected? Meaning, how is the Mac
running the AirPort Utility attached to the new
AEBS(n) and the AX's? Your problem is likely that the
AX's are already named and configured to operate in
the old network, but your connection method doesn't
provide visibility to them...
Thank you for posting back to me. I finally got them to work and your explanation I thinks explains to me what happened. (I got them up and running just before I saw your reply.) I unplugged both of them and connected them via an ethernet cable to the new aebs and also did a hard restart for both. They then showed up with their alphanumeric titles, not the titles I had given them. Airport Utility recognized them after that. Hopefully my experience and your explanation will help others too. Thanks again.

  • I just bought a new pc and My laptop can connect to it but my airport utility won't recognize it. Even though it does connect to the internet about every 15 minutes the internet shuts off.

I just bought a new pc and for our internet connection we have an airport express. My laptop can connect to it but my airport utility won't recognize it. Even though it does connect to the internet about every 15 minutes the internet shuts off. What should I do?

If you've not yet tried, unpower the AppleTV for a minute or so and restart - this occasionally corrects issues.
If not and the software update seems to have caused an issue, go to the Settings menu and choose to Restore it (this will erase all settings) to reapply current firmware.
Alternatively try to do so via iTunes:
If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen on your Apple TV - Apple Support

  • Windows - Airport Utility won't recognize Express plugged into Home stereo.

I am trying to set up the express to stream music to home stereo exclusively. I currently have a NETGEAR 108 Mbps (WGT624 v2) router set up on a Windows XP. Airport Utility won't recognize the device. Any ideas on how to make this thing work while keeping existing network? Thanks so much.

Let's double-check your AX's configure to receive audio via AirTunes.
Please reconnect the AX back to the Netgear before running the AirPort Utility.
Ok, compare your settings to the following within the AirPort Utility using Manual Setup:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing Netgear's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • Airport utility won't recognize express

I have an extreme set up as a base.  it's working fine.  I want to use the express to extend the range of the network.  The utility on my primary computer won't recognize the express no matter what I do. I have reset every way possible and it just won't be recognized.  I even have plugged it in right next to the base and it won't come up on utility. Thoughts?

I have the same problem. I have two MacBook Pros. I originally used my airport express as my base.  Then I got an extreme and replaced that as a base. I have an external hard drive connected to the extreme.  I have now tried tried to use the express to connect with my amplifier/receiver in a different room.  I plan on playing music from my external hard drive through ITunes on my amplifier; however, my computer will not recognize the old express.  I tried going into File and then Configure Other and then type 10.0.1.1 (which I saw in another post) but then I was still not able to update or get the express recognized.
I have a suspicion there is probably a pretty straighforward solution.
    Thanks

  • Airport Utility won't recognize second Airport Extreme

    Hi.
My quite old 500GB Time Capsule is connected to my modem in bridge mode. I have a first A1264 Airport Express connected to the TC to extend the wireless to the living room, which works fine. For about a year, I had a second A1264 Airport Express in the kitchen, also in Extend mode. In September, the kitchen AEx stopped working, was flashing amber, and wasn't being recognized by Airport Utility. After many restarts and reboots, I gave in and ordered a new Airport Extreme, the new flat one. It worked fine for a few weeks and then this week, it hasn't been functioning properly and is doing the flashing amber light thing, and again, I can't see it on Airport Utility.
I brought it into the office, did a hard reset and connect it by ethernet to the TC. The TC reads it, examines base stations on my network and then says "An unexpected error occurred. Try again."
    Can someone help me?

I have now solved this problem - my TC was too close to my modem and circuit breaker and the wifi was being distorted by it. I have moved the three elements apart and now everything works fine.
    Ho hum.

  • My MacBook Pro's  airport Utility will not recognize my new time capsule.

My name is Sam. I am not very computer savvy, but I am trying everything I can to get this time capsule to work. I have a MacBook Pro that has been getting the internet via a DSL connection. I am using a Versa Express VER170P dsl modem. I do NOT get wireless internet with this router. I bought the time capsule based on advice that I would be able to use it to get internet wirelessly in my condo. I have plugged the printer into the usb port, I have plugged my internet cord into the WAN slot and plugged the power cord into the wall. The TC shows the green light, but my Airport utility just scans indefinitely never finding it. Can anyone help? If so, please use basic terms. =)
    Thanks,
    Sam

Hi and welcome to the discussions.
The green light is a good sign so far.
Try connecting an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports (there are 3 of them)on your Time Capsule directly to your MacBook Pro and then see if this helps AirPort Utility locate your Time Capsule to you can configure it.
If no luck, try shutting down your system and restarting. Modem first for a few minutes, then Time Capsule until you have the green light, then your computer.
Once you have the Time Capsule configured, and you are ready to make your first backup, keep the ethernet connection to Time Capsule as there is a lot of data to be copied and it will go faster and more reliably with this connection. Subsequent backups will normally be much smaller and quicker, so you could use wireless for these if your prefer.

  • Airport Utility won't read configuration of Airport Extreme Error -6753

I've been using this Airport Extreme and computer configuration (along with AppleTV2 and Airplay, etc.) without any issues for almost a year now.  Recently I wanted to extend my wireless network by adding an Airport Express, so I tried to reconfigure the Airport Extreme base station in Airport Utility, and that's when all the trouble started...
Problem: When using Airport Utility to try to set up the AirPort Extreme Base Station, Airport Utility recognizes the AE (Amber light), but fails to read the configuration and eventually times out with: "An error occurred while reading the configuration. Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"
The strange thing is, I'm still connected to the internet and able to surf around.  The light on the base station is slowly flashing Amber.  Ever since resetting, the AE has been renamed to its default and is no longer password protected.
I Googled around the interweb looking for solutions, and have already put in a few hours now trying lots of suggested fixes, including:
    Soft reset
    Hard reset
    Factory reset
"Configure Other" workaround in Airport Utility
    Installed 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Verified and Repaired Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
Trashed SystemConfiguration Folder in Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences and restarted
I've tried most of these multiple times and nothing has worked so far.
The launching point for most of my repair attempts is here: http://blogs.computerworld.com/18577/pre_lion_os_x_10_6_8_update_kills_airport_n etworks

    MacBook Pro 4,1
    OS 10.6.8
    Airport Utility 5.5.3
    AirPort Extreme (4th Gen.)

Update: After first posting I tried to set up the Airport Express on its own, going back to exactly the same set up that was working perfectly for a couple years.
Airport Utility behaves exactly the same way and returns the same error in the same way with the AX as it does with its big sister the AE.
I guess this leads me to conclude it's not a hardware problem with either Airport, but rather something to do with OS 10.6.8 and/or Airport Utility 5.5.3.  No closer to a solution, but closer to the cause-- I think...
Any help here would be doubly greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

  • My airport express no longer shows up in Airport Utility since I got a new router.

Hi all, I'm scratching my head at this one.
For years I've had an Airport Express and it has worked fine. I was using it simply to stream music from iTunes on my PC as well as my iPhone and iPad to my home theater which is in a different room. I had a Linksys WRT150N wireless router, and the Airport Express would join my existing network and stream music via Airplay.
A few days ago I replaced my Linksys router with a Netgear WNDR3800, and the Airport Express no longer connected. I assumed I had to set it up again, but it is not even recognized by Airport Utility, so I can't get to the setup screen. I tried performing a soft reset, hard reset, and attaching the Airport Express to one of my Netgear's LAN ports via Ethernet cable, but it still won't show up in Airport Utility. The amber light just flashes on the unit and I can't access any setup screens.
Am I missing something obvious? All of the help tips assume the Airport Express at least shows up in Airport Utility. In my Airport Utility there is nothing to select and it says "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
I am running a PC with Windows 7 and using Airport Utility v. 5.6.1 for Windows.
    Thanks for any help!
    -Rob

Did you try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable from your PC to the AirPort Express to see if AirPort Utillty could "see" the AirPort Express that way? This method will work virtually all of the time unless the Windows Firewall or the PC's anti-virus program is blocking the connection attempt from your PC to the AirPort Express.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless only, you need to remember that when you reset the Expess back to default settings, it is now producing a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
You must log on to the Apple Network xxxxxx wireless network first....no password is required.....and then open AirPort Utility so that your PC will establish a connection to the AirPort Express.
Once the AirPort Express has been configured to join your Netgear wireless network, you can log back on to your normal wireless network and all devices will be working with one another.

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

I just expected to be able to plug in the TC, so a simple set-up and experience wireless both upstairs and downstairs in my house.  For some reason the range is low and speed veru disappointing.
I am far from being an IT expert but I would welcome advice about setting up this TC so we can enjoy the product as it was designed.  Please HELP!

No silver bullet........but my suggestions may drive you in the right direction.
    1.  Unplug the power cable from the TC and wait 10-15 minutes before powering back up.   Seriously wait!
Proceed to #2 if this dosen't help.
    2.  Unplug the power cable from the TC, ubplug the power cable from your Broadband Modem (assuming it's a cable modem), disconnect ethernet, and cable from modem.
2a.  Wait 10-15 minutes then re-connect cable, ethernet, and power back to modem (your modem should power up unless you have a power switch)  wait for all the modem lights to come on EXCEPT activity.
2b.  Connect ethernet from modem to TC, and plug in the power cable to TC.
Proceed to #3 if this dosen't help.
    3.  Reconfigure the TC.........Read here........http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
All really simple to do....if you need additional help let me (us) know.

  • Airport Utility won't work with Aiport Express A1084

I have an older Airport Express, model A1084. I'm running OS 10.9.2 and Airport Utilty 6.3.2  The Airport Utilty I have will not allow me to control the Airport Express I have so I cannot change wifi channels to improve interference problems from other wifi sources from neighbors. Older versions that should work cannot be installed because they aren't compatible with my current version OS 10.9.2. What can I do to fix this? Is Apple going to make available a new version of Airport Utilty that fixes this lock out problem?

Is Apple going to make available a new version of Airport Utilty that fixes this lock out problem?
We are all users here.....just like you....so no one here will be able to tell you what Apple may or may not do.
If you want an opinion.....AirPort Utility 6.x versions were introduced two years ago, and Apple has yet to change the utility to support older AirPorts....so my opinion would be that Apple will not ever change this.
The easiest solution is to use....or borrow for 10 minutes....another Mac that is running the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system...or...a PC with AirPort Utility installed to administer the older AirPort.
