Airport / Virgin Superhub

Hi everyone - can some please explain to me the benefits of getting an Airport Extreme/Express/Time Capsule if I already have a Virgin Superhub?
How do the two products co-exist, exactly?
Our Virgin Superhub is located in an upstairs bedroom and the signal downstairs can sometime be less than perfect (certainly not 100mb as advertised...)
We have in our house a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, 2 x iPads, 2 x iPhones and an Apple TV device. They don't all run at once but there's certainly quite a demand for bandwidth at times.
Should I notice a considerable performance difference if I were to purchase one of the Airport products? What would I need to do to the Virgin Superhub to get the best strength?
Networks have never been my strongpoint...

Hi
Once you have put the superhub into modem mode, you connect the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule to it by ethernet cable. The best location would be to place the router in the middle of the house to get the best signal, but you will be limited by whether you can or happy to run the ethernet cable back to the superhub.
I believe the new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule broadcast a stronger signal than the Airport Express - whether you will need to extend will depend on the strength of your signal and this will be affected by construction and background noise. I suggest you start with the one device and then use something like Inssider to measure the strength of the signal in various locations around the house. If you need to extend the network you could use an airport express but bear in mind you lose some wifi overhead so you lose some speed. The best set up is to connect the device you use to extend to the original router by ethernet cable - this is called a roaming network. Search on Airport and roaming on the apple site to get a detailed overview of networking.
The AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are probably the way to go, but at a cost. As you say Time Capsule has the added advantage of the backup facility. The other key advantage is that the WAN and LAN ports are 1Gb, the Airport Express is only 100mbps qso if you use ethernet you will be constraining yourself.
Hope this helps.

  • Virgin Superhub settings to allow Airport Extreme to broadcast at 2.4 and 5Ghz

I have a 120Mb Virgin Superhub (SH) installed in my home but its wireless performance is terrible. The SH router can work in wireless or modem mode at 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz but not simultaneously. I'm therefore going to place my SH in modem mode and connect up my Airport Extreme which can broadcast at 2.4 and 5Ghz simultaneously which will allow me to use all my tech at their best frequencies.
My query is what do I set my SH to? 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz to enable my Airport Express to broadcast both frequencies. Hope you can help.

Hi - if you configure the SH to be just a modem then all it should be doing is providing internet to the Extreme - the Extreme can be used with almost any cable or DSL modem without having to touch the modem so 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz would have nothing to do with the dual band capabilities of the Extreme - I would check with the SH manufacturer or ISP to make sure that this is the case - since you already have the Extreme, it won't hurt to try it.

  • How to extend Virgin Superhub broadband using Apple Airport Express

I need to extend my Virgin Superhub broadband (Which is downstairs) using Airport Express as my playstation looses connection (upstairs) when I'm online (especially when playing Fifa!) any ideas on how to do this as I keep getting a message saying it was unable to extend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Guys
    Jazz

If you are trying to configure the Express to "extend" using wireless only, unfortunately that feature is reserved for use with other Apple routers.  It would be extremely unlikley that it would work with a product from another manfacturer.
To have the Expesss provide more wireless coverage, you will need to connect it to the Superhub using a wired ethernet connection and configure it to extend that way.

  • HP Laserjet 100 color MFP M175nw does not connect to Virgin SuperHub

Spent the last day trying to connect my laptop wirelessly to a HP Laserjet 100 color printer.
I've uninstalled and tried to re-install the software, both from the disk supplied with the printer and from the less than useful HP support website.
The installation process gets to the point after 30 minutes or so, where it decides "An install operation took too long to execute. This is preventing product use" - so I cannot install the software. Despite during the process connecting the laptop via a USB cable.
This happens on two laptops (both HP one with  Windows 7.1, the other with Windows 8.1, the result is the same in either case. This is extremely frustrating. So would appreciate a view as to how I might fix this.
The only thing that has changed is upgrade to a Virgin Superhub - but I do not see why this would cause the issue.

Welcome to the HP Forums DG-UK,
I see by your post that you are getting the error message of  "An install operation took too long to execute. This is preventing product use" on Windows 7.1 and Windows 8.1. I can help you with this issue.
I am going to provide some steps so we can get the printer configured on the wireless network and then worry about the installation after that.
On the printer's control panel, touch the setup button, network setup menu, wireless direct, turn it on.
On the Windows 7 computer to play it safe, go to the wireless icon in the bottom right corner and select the printer's network name.
Open Internet Explorer and type in the IP address (192.168.223.1) for the printer in the address bar.
This will load the Embedded Web Server for the printer.
Select the networking tab, wireless on the left hand side.
Fill out all your network information, select infrastructure, select your network name, put in password and type of encryption.
    Apply settings.
Now the printer should be configured over the wireless network.
Then go to the wireless icon in the bottom right corner again and select your network name.
Run the uninstall from the CD software to remove any registry files.
Disconnect the USB cable if it is connected.
Go to start, computer, right click on the CD and left click open, double click on uninstall.
Then disable all the start up programs and temporarily turn off the Antivirus Software. How to use MSCONFIG .
Click on the start up tab and click disable all.
Then go to start, computer, right click the CD and left click open, right click install or setup and run as administrator.
Select the option for  wireless connection.
    Test the printer now.
Then you will need to go back in and enable the start up programs and turn the Antivirus Software back on again.
Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.
    Have a nice day.

  • Playbook & Virgin superhub Please help

Hi i have just bought a blackberry playbook and started to set up all going well until it stated to update software to complete my set up. I did this and the playbook completed step 1 but would not install the update (step 2) and just keeps restarting and retrying to no success
I have looked online and have seen a few posts saying the playbook doesnt work with the virgin superhub or i need to change my superhub wireless channels from g to n or n to g im unsure as im not really tech minded but have followed a few of the guides and all seem to make matters worse. mainly just stopping my internet altogether
Can anyone help me with this or will i accept defeat and take this back ?
    Cheers

I'm going to assume you have no data on the PlayBook at this point since it's brand new.
Install BlackBerry Desktop Manager to your computer.
This can be downloaded for free from www.blackberry.com/desktop
Unplug your PlayBook from the computer and then push and hold down the Power Button until the unit Force Powers Off.
Open Desktop Software and while Desktop Software is open on your computer and the PlayBook still Powered Off, Connect the PlayBook to your computer.
You should see an error screen from Desktop Software pop up that has the options to Retry, Update, or Cancel.
    QUICKLY choose the Update option.
This will erase all the information off of your PlayBook and Re-Write the Software back onto it. Once it's complete your PlayBook will need to go back through the setup wizard, and you can then try the setup again.
    Post back with your results.
    John

  • EA4500 and Virgin Superhub dual band settings

I have a Virgin Superhub at home which is capable of 2.4 OR 5GHz wireless. I have a mixture of 2.4 and 5 GHz tech at home so would like to use dual band. My wireless settings on my Superhub modem look like this......
As you can see it has settings for 2.4 OR 5GHz and wireless modes of 54, 144 or 300Mbps.
What setting should I be using for my EA4500 to operate in dual band mode? I'm guessing I should put by Virgin Superhub modem in modem mode at 5GHz/300Mbps.I will besetting up seperate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5GHz bands
Thanks in advance for you help

Hi. The EA4500 does not have the wireless modes option of 54, 144 or 300Mbps so for the 2.4 ghz with its own ssid you can either set the channel to 1,3,6,9, or 11. As for the 5 ghz settings with its own ssid also you can use 40 mhz for its channel width and you can use 40 to 153.

  • Hi my Iphone 4 will not connect to my virgin superhub (netgear). Tried resetting network settings with no joy. Tried resetting all setting again no joy as well as rebooting the hub. My Ipad connects to it fine so cant understand it. Any Ideas appreciated?

Hi, My Iphone 4 will not connect to my virgin superhub (netgear). Ive reset network settings with no joy, Reset all the phones settings also no joy. Ive rebooted the hub and none of it works. My ipad has connected to it not problem so doesnt make sense. Ive read that it could possibly be my phones wifi signal reciever may not be strong enough but on my handset it shows as full bars!!! Any ideas would be really appreciated.
    Thanks

I had this same problem with my new MBP 15", but only with the USB port on the left side. The USB port on the right side worked fine. Perhaps the ports on the left don't have enough signal energy for the iPhone.
Anyway, try using a different USB port, and if that doesn't work, perhaps you could try a powered USB hub.

  • IPad air causing my Virgin Superhub to Reboot itself

I have the Virgin Superhub and since I have upgraded to the IPad Air , I have discovered that when I log onto a web page on safari the iPad males the Superhub reboot itself causing the wifi signal to drop out! I have 2 iPad minis and a 5S in the house and they are all fine. It is only the IPad Air that is causing the Superhub to reboot. Virgin say it's not their equipment! Any ideas?

  • Airport express base station and virgin superhub issues

    Hi All,
New to the fourm and looking for some help if poss with some issues I'm having here.
Since having our superhub installed it has been in modem mode and has been connected to our apple base station acting as the wifi router.
Went off on holiday for a couple of weeks and shut everything down, retunred this weekend powered everything back up and now we have connection issues.
I have spoken with Virgin and they have run tests to prove that my connection is okay their side, we have changed the superhub back to a router and we have wifi via that.
The problem starts when I turn the superhub back into a modem and connect the airport base station. Initially everything connects okay and we get wifi, but then after anything between 30 seconds and 2 minutes we loose the connection. The airport still stay online and producing our local network but the superhub lights go from being blue intermintant flashing to constantly flashing. I have tried all sorts of reset options and in all combintaions to no avail.
So currently we are back using the superhub as our router, but I need to get back to using the apple base station as I have other products that run from this.
I've read on another webpage about the double NAT issue, I'm not sure if this is what is happening in my case as I'm unsure what this is all about.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Airtunes support is built in to iTunes version 4.9 - there is no other software you need to download or install. If your PC has been successfully set up to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, a drop down box will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes application window where you can select the place your iTunes should be playing (ie internal speakers, or the Airport Express).
You did not mention either (a) configuring your Airport Express or (b) setting up your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network. To do this:
    (a) read the configuration manual for the Airport Express. Then download the Airport 4.2 update for Windows (from Apple's web site) - it provides the latest Windows versions of the Airport Express configuration software.
    (b) to get your PC to connect to the Airport Express wireless network, see the links to "accessing an airport network" provided at:

  • Wireless router conflicting with Virgin SuperHub...

Not sure if anyone can help here
Recently upgraded to Virgin Media's 30Mb broadband and Superhub
This superhub is a modem and wireless router but I've had the wireless section disabled so that it acts as a modem only and that in turn is connected to my Netgear WNR2000 N300 wireless router. This is then connected to my iMAC via ethernet but runs wifi around the house for the iPad, AppleTV2 and my Marantz CR603 streaming hifi
Anyways... All of a sudde the Mac isnt able to connect to the internet; it appears that the router and superbhub seem to be conflicting each other but I'm unsure why (I'm not that technical minded when it comes to things like this sorry)
It's like the IP addresses have changed so sometimes it'll work (after everythings rebooted) but then it stops working again etc...
Does anyone have any advice or tips on this issue?
    Regards

Turn the dhcp server off in either the Virgin or the Netgear, 2 dhcp servers is one too many.

  • Ethernet not working with Virgin superhub (UK)

    Hi,
When I plug my MacBook(mid 2010) into my Virgin Media super hub, I am given the error "self assigned ip address may not be able to connect to the Internet".
I haven't used the Ethernet on my MacBook before and after reading apple support and virgin media support, it seems as if it should just work. The Ethernet connection is enabled in MacOS and have attempted using DHCP and self assigning an ip address.
I have tested the cable I am using with a friends laptop, running windows 7, and it connects fine.
Any advice on getting this to work would be great.
    Thanks

    Try creating a new "Location":
    System Preferences > Network
Select the AirPort from the left hand side
Click on the Locations combo box and select Edit Locations...
Click on + to add a new location, call it "Home" (or anything else you prefer)
    Click on Advanced
Select the AirPort tab and enter your network name
    Select TCP/IP tab.
    Configure IPv4 Using DHCP
Now click on Renew DHCP Lease.  After a few seconds you should get an IP address (probably 192.168.x.x)
    Click on Proxies tab.
Select Auto Proxy Discovery and Use Passive FTP
Click on OK and Apply, etc.

  • Two airport devices wired to netgear router - can they both work on the same network?

    Hi
I have a Virgin Superhub 2 cable router. I would like to extend the wireless around the house using existing cables and have an Airport Express (v2) upstairs and an AirPort Extreme (v4) downstairs.
Both would be connected individually to the netgear based router. When setting up the second airport device, can I asked it it extend the existing apple network I would have set up or must it be a different one. If it will extend, will it be wireless extend or wired as in both apple devices are wired to the same netgear router.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

See...I have a ipod nano which on being connected to itunes7, I'm able to make my own playlist&delete or download songs at my own will. But when I connect my ipod mini to my i tunes(on the same computer) ...it(only) just updates my mini but after that if i wanna make changes to the playlist on my mini or delete anything...I can't. It only works with my nano but not with my mini.

  • Virgin 100MB vs Safari Download Speed

    So...
I have a Virgin SuperHub with a 100Mb internet plan.
I'm trying to download Eve Online (7.44GB) but only reaching download speeds of 9-10Mbps.
Am I right in thinking my Virgin internet plan means I am able to download at 100Mbps?
I have checked my speed with SpeedTest.net and had 120Mbps.
I have looked in router setting for firmware upgrade but couldn't find it and all seems to be well as I'm getting the speeds on SpeedTest.net.
Is there something I can do to increase the speed with Safari?
    Thanks

Yup. No ISP, internet provider, lists their speeds in Mega Bytes. It is always mega bits.
Just like Ethernet connections 10mb 100mb and giga bit/1000mb. Then you divide that by 8.
So all in all you have a very fast connection. Mine is only 30mb over cable. Which is much better then the 3mb DSL connection I use to have.

So Virgin's internet service is in mega bits not Bytes? That would explain my conunrdum.
