Airport WEP key problem

Ok, I'm running two Macs and two PC's. The macs are connecting fine to the Airport Express but the PC's are having a tough time.
My desktop uses a Linksys Wireless Adapter and asks for a 16 character key when Apple Express only asked for 13 characters when I was setting up the WEP key.
I called Linksys and they insisted the Airport Express had to be changed to a ASCII or something of that nature. Anyone has a clue?

Any computer that wants to join a WEP-protected AirPort network and doesn't have an AirPort or AirPort Extreme Card in it, whether it's a Mac/PC/Linux box, needs the hexadecimal equivalent of the Apple WEP password.
To get it:
- Run AirPort Admin Utility and connect to your base station.
- Choose Base Station > Equivalent Network Password.
This will be the WEP key to enter on the PCs.

Q: Where In MacOS X stored info wepkeys?
    Thanks!

Why do you need to configure your Mac with more than one key? There are routers that support multiple WEP keys, and the PURPOSE for supporting multiple keys is to segment handing out the keys to different trust levels and/or device types. For example, devices that are difficult to reconfigure like wireless network time clocks might use one of the keys, and that key is never given out to people with mobile computers or hand held devices that might be lost or stolen. Another key would be given to fixed assets like office computers, and yet another key would be given out to portable devices that might walk. Why do this? If a key is compromised, every access point needs to be changed, and then every device that had that key(s) programmed into it would need to be reconfigured. By using different keys for different device types, you limit the amount of manual changes that need to occur if a key is compromised.
That being said, you might be able to specify all 4 keys on your Mac somehow, but you gotta ask yourself the important question - why? I assure you, the traffic to and from your Mac to the access point is going to use ONE of the keys, most likely the first in your list.
WEP is a dying insecure standard, by the way. Your company should be looking into upgrading to a dynamic key method of encryption, that can be changed instantly in the event of a compromise.

  • Livebox password problems! WEP key?

    Hello!
I am having major problems connecting to my wireless network using the Wanadoo Livebox. I'll give you the run-down in point form!
    - I share the connection with 2 other PC users who connect with no problems.
    - I have connected to the network before. Once i am connected, as long as I don't leave the house and connect to another wireless network (in a cafe etc) I can connect when I like. The problem is with that inital connection.
    - I have used my WEP key as my password in the past.
    - When I connect the usual way by clicking the airport icon in the corner and put in the WEP it says 'There was an error joining the wireless network'
    - When I try to connect using the 'assist me' section from System preferences (where I usually have most success) it tells me that 'the password is invalid' which I know not to be true!
    Please help!!!

Yes, they can use your internet connection. As you say, no big deal UNLESS they start misusing it, deliberately or otherwise. For example, they get free use of your connection, use a PC on it, get hacked, and next thing there is a spambot spewing out spam by the megabyte on YOUR connection. Who get shut off?
With your firewall in place on the mac your mac itself should be reasonably secure.
Yes, they can sniff your traffic to the wireless hub. However, if you are sending credit card numbers presumably it is to a web page, and you wouldn't even consider doing that unless it was to a secure (https, little padlock shows closed onthe browser) page, in which case the details you send are encrypted.
I would suggest two further steps you should take, if you haven't already. Firstly, tell the wireless hub not to broadcast its SSID. This will make it less visible to casual bad guys, but you will have to tell the mac what SSID to use (probably each time you connect). Secondly, tell the hub only to accept connections from specific ethernet addresses, and give it the address of your wireless card.
If you are serious about the security you should consider changing from WEP to WPA, which is much harder to crack but also harder to configure.
For more info try google - something like basic wireless security or security wep wpa should produce many hits!

  • Still Having Problem With WEP Key

    Hi:
I have been reading this forum and looking for WEP related topic however I still haven't solved my problem.  So here is my problem and see if anyone from this forum can help.
I set my linksys to make WEP key mandatory.  I used 128 bit key and was able to generate 104 bit key (26 hex digits).  It works fine on my wife laptop (COMPAQ), it can communicate using this key. However it never works on my IBM/Lenovo T43P.  The only difference is I am running Funk/Juniper Odyssey Client Manager software.  Yes I have entered the 26 hex key properly and still doesn't work.  It does work however if I disable the WEP key.  Any idea what the problem is?
I took my laptop to my brothers house who is using DLINK router and use a different WEP and it works fine.  So it seems like this WEP key doesn't work with my Linksys router.  By the way my Linksys router is BEFW11S4.
    Thanks,
    Jim

If your one laptop is already working iwth same 28bits WEP key ..... i dont think so that there is any issue with router ......
You can configure the Odyssey Client Manager as per the settings in the router ....
Still if you want you can use WEP 64 bits key on the router ...check on both the laptops if they are able to access interent .....

  • I am trying to link our xbox and PC into our wireless network.  I am using an apple airport express and it is asking me for a WEP Key.  Where can I find my wep key?

I am tyrying to link our xbox and PC int oour wireless network.  I am using an apple airport express and it is asking for my WEP Key.  Where do I find it?

You should be able to setup WPA / WPA2 access, rather than WEP - which is old an less secure. (Unless your devices are too old for WPA??)
    Try this link: http://spotlight.getnetwise.org/wireless/wifitips/apple/apple-wpa.php
    **Edit
Airport does support the WEP protocol.

  • Ipw3945, wep key, dhcp problem

    Hi,
I have ibm thinkpad t60 with intel wirelles card (using ipw3945 kernel module and ipw3945d userspace daemon).
Card works fine if i try connecting to open network (eg. no wep or wpa), but if connect to wep key protected network i will not get interface configuration by dhcp server.
Exactly problem is: i will do iwlist eth1 scan, then i will choose one network.
I type: iwconfig eth1 ap BSSID key WEPKEY.
My wirelles card will associate with AP. I know the AP is offering DHCP. So i run dhcpcd eth1. Dhcpcd will time out. I tried it with dhclient too. Same situation.
So i booted winXP to check if everything is working. Connection is fine.
I know the network is working OK.
I tried to sniff a packets. DHCPCD and DHCLIENT works OK. They are trying to communicate with AP. But AP sends nothing.
I also tried to increase timeout for DHCPCD and DHCLIENT - i think this is not a problem with this clients.
    I am using kernel 2.6.22.
    So lets resume:
i know that wirelles card is ok - works on other networks (open networks).
I know that dhcpcd and dhclient works ok (on other networks and interfaces)
I know that AP is ok (tested under windows)
So where is problem? i don't understand.
I will continue trying to solve this problem so if you have any direction please post it there. I will try than write some direction if it is configuration problem. If it is bug i can only report it.

ipw3945 work fine for me and I'm using wep. I just put the essid and key in rc.conf like the wiki says:
    # /etc/rc.conf
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="dhcp"
    #wlan_eth1="eth1 essid MyEssid" <------ unencrypted
#wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid key 12345678" <------- enable with hex
#wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid key s:wirelesspassword" <---------- enable with ascII
    WLAN_INTERFACES=(eth1)
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0 eth1)
I think when you change this and restart the network daemon things should work.
There's other possibilities if you use a lot of different networks, I never tried those.

  • Re: Apple AirPort drivers only support a WEP key index of 1

This article may be published at Apple's leisure.

Are you entering the WEP key in ascii (just a word) or hex pairs? If you were using ascii, try switching to hex pairs and see if that works (just click the menu in the password window and it should appear as something like "128 bit WEP hex"). I know you said the password is correct, but if using ascii, sometimes the keys don't match on the router and computer (or something like that), so the router thinks the password you gave is wrong. When this happens for me, it just cites "problems joining network" or something similar, rather than citing an incorrect password. Hex pairs bypass this problem.
Also make sure that you are using the same bit encryption as your router, so 64 or 128 bit WEP, when you enter it.

  • WEP Key for registering XP to use Airport connection?

In my Windows XP partition, the computer recognizes my Airport card, and can access the hardware; however, it's not allowed to connect with my ordinary password, rather it's calling for a multi-digit "WEP Key" - How do I figure out what my WEP Key is to allow it access?

    Hi John,
    Go to Applications-Utilities-Airport Admin Utility,
and click to open. Highlight your base station and
double click to open the preference window. In the
toolbar at the top of the window, click on Password.
In the drop down you will see the Hex equivalent
password (WEP key). This is the number you need to
    enter in XP.

  • Problem connecting to non-apple routers with WEP key

Hi there, have tried to connect to two wireless routers recently which have WEP keys. One gives me "Connection timed out" after about 5 seconds and the other says "incompatible security". The passcode is too long to enter if I choose any of the WEP 40/128-bit options (it's 32 characters long!)
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Hi.
I can't connect to WEP networks either with Leopard 10.5.1.
It just says "incompatible Security". I've tried it for one hour without any luck.
Why doesn't Apple realize that there are millions of WEP encrypted networks out there and that it is essential to be able to connect to them. (it worked with Tiger, didn't it?)
Is there a knowledge base article out there what to do about it?
I just can't walk to hotel managers and ask them to switch to WPA, especially if they don't have a clue how to do that and older windows computers won't be able to connect any more.
Why a transparent menu bar but no way to connect to WEP networks?
I'm very disappointed. Apple, fix this! (now!)
Is there actually a way to get your money back for Leopard if this basic things don't work anymore?
    Thank you for any help.

  • Airport Internet Sharing Problem  Mini - PC Laptop

    Airport Internet Sharing Problem
    My setup is:
Cable Modem -> Mac Mini --> PC Laptop
... with the connection between the mac mini and the PC laptop being the built-in mac mini airport using internet sharing.
Hi, I've been trying to set up Airport internet sharing with the mini, to no avail. It works off & on, but invariably the internet connections drop after about 10 minutes. The only way to get it started again, is to go into internet sharing, turn off internet sharing, then turn it on again. It will work for another 10 minutes or so (slow) after gong back to the PC laptop and reconnecting, then it chokes again.
I've tried the connection both with & without WEP, same behavior. I read somewhere that OS X only plays well with using Channel 1, so I tried that. No luck. Tried with and without Interference Robustness, no luck.
Tried with WEP on and using 40 bit hex keys using a "$" prepend in the mac as suggested on this web page:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030803030354585
Same behavior, works for 10 minutes, then it chokes again.
Tried with & without the firewall.
Yes, personal web sharing is on.
The PC laptop works fine with any number of other wireless routers out & about town, at my girlfriend's house, so forth.
Any chance I have a bum mac mini wireless card or antennae or something? The reception strength on the PC laptop is good.
Just don't know what to make of it. So stupid, it seems like something pretty basic that ought to work.
Yeah yeah tell me to get a wireless router, but I'm not going to do that, that's one major reason I bought the mini in the first place and it would be nice if it worked as advertised.
    Any other suggestions?

    Works better now...
this is me again. A week ago or so, I noticed there was an automatic update to the wireless on the mac mini.
Since then the performance is much improved. My PC laptop connection to the mac mini no longer drops spontaneously.
Much improved! Thank you very much!
Yes, on occasion, when I leave and then come back to use the wireless, the laptop will not reconnect after multiple attempts; I have to turn of internet sharing and flick it back on again, but then it works all evening fore hours and hours straight with no problems.
    Thanks Apple! It's usable now!

  • WEP key issues

I have been successfully using wireless over an unsecured network. Then I tried to connect to my home network with a WEP key, and, following this post I managed to get it to work with
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID key [1] XXXXXXXXXX
    sudo dhclient wlan0
After rebooting and suspending successfully several times, I suspended again and got
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument
whenever I tried the iwconfig command. (This was the error message I had been getting previously, before putting [1] in the iwconfig command.) Now, dhclient just hangs. I am really confused why this suddenly stopped working. I didn't do any updates between when it was working and when it wasn't. I don't know where to look for more specific error messages; dmesg and /var/log/syslog.log are unhelpful.
Using [2], [3], or [4] instead of [1] prevents the error message from being output, but dhclient also hangs. In either case, iwlist wlan0 key lists all four keys as "off", even though I tried setting iwconfig wlan0 key on. Is this supposed to happen?
My card is BCM4322 and I am using broadcom-wl from the AUR.
    Any insight would be appreciated!

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • My nintendo DS can't connect to wifi with a WEP key.

I entered the SSID and Equivalent Network Password into my Nintendo DS and tried connecting. All it gave me was "Unable to connect to an access point". I only have this problem when my WEP key is on. It works without security, but I don't want to get rid of it.
    Anyone else have this problem?

I have the newer Airport Extreme and have the same problem connecting with the DS. I have WEP security enabled. Does your wireless router (Airport Extreme) need to be set up for "b" only in order to connect with the DS? If that's even possible?
Connecting is not a problem for the Wii, PS 3 or PSP? The DS is the only one that doesn't connect wirelessly.

I can connect fine to it, wireless without security, but when I enable the WEP it won’t connect saying there is a “problem with connecting with the Airport”.
Every thing is correct as far as I can see. The Password is defiantly correct, case sensitive and everything. The problem only comes with WEP security.

I have also tried deleting the wep key password form my key chain. Powering on and off the router and my mac book etc etc.
