Airport wireless card to other networks?....

I'm using an Imac G3 and am running mac os 9 and was thinking about buying a airport wireless card to put into my computer so I can finally connect to the internet through this computer.
but ive had a few questions before I buy this airport card.....
this computer is the only apple brand computer running on the mac os and I use a linksys router from my PC sending my internet signal...and was wondering if i was to install an airport card into my imac would i be able to pick up that linkys signal and be able to acess the internet or would i have to go and buy a airport base station to get the internet signal for just my imac to pick up because it cant detect a linkys signal?

rhayden, Welcome to the discussion area!
If you install the original AirPort card in your iMac G3 you will be able to connect to any 802.11b compatible wireless network. You will need to ensure that your Linksys base station is operating in an 802.11b compatible mode.
BTW, you also need the AirPort card adapter to install the AirPort card into your iMac G3.

  • Power Mac G3 Pismo with Airport wireless card in Mac OS X 10.4 won't connect to wireless network  with  newest Airport Extreme Base Station set at WPA Personal/WPA 2 Personal encryption.

My Power Book G3 Pismo with an Airport wireless card  running Mac OS X 10.4.11 will not connect to my new Airport
Extreme Base Station using WPA Personal/WPA 2 Person encryption.  The Airport firmware is version 9.52.  From
posts I've read online at different places indicates the Airport card should support the WPA encryption.  Perhaps the problem
is the Base Station is using a combination setting and the fault is in the base station?
    Thanks for any suggestions

Perhaps an inexpensive usb wireless adapter would work as well?
This is probably the simplest way to get the G3 connected to the wireless network.
I'll have to read up on getting an express and using it as a wireless bridge as I am unfamiliar with the concept.
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting a wireless signal.
A new AirPort Express could be located close to the G3. The Express will pick up the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme, then provide an Ethernet connection to the G3 though a short Ethernet cable.
This can work very well......IF.....you keep the G3 at a fixed location, since it will always be connected to the AriPort Express using an Ethernet cable.
I do have an old Linksys Wireless G router.  I wonder if that would work?
In theory, yes. But it would have to use much older WEP "security", which is easily cracked in minutes using free tools available on the Internet. So, anyone who really wanted to get on the network could do so. It's an option, but not a very good one.

  • Airport Wireless Card Issues

On my MacBook Pro 13 inch I notice freezing that in safari or firefox the browsers freeze after five minutes. I'm connected to my wireless router at home with full signal, yet after five minutes of being connected I can not browse the web, the browser freezes. In order for me to reconnect to the web and continue browsing, I have to disable and then re enable the Airport Wireless Card. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have not installed the internal antenna correctly.

  • Older Airport Wireless Card.

I have an older (2000) G4 with the graphite colored cased that I would like to add to my wireless network. I know my machine takes the older styled original Airport card, not the Airport Extreme card. Where can I get one of the older cards to add to my machine? I'm told I need to be sure it's an 801.1b style but I don't know if it's a PCI card or what. Any help? I'm running a Netgear Wireless Router. I can access the internet with the G4 using the RJ45 connection but I want to get rid of the cords.

You can use either the original AirPort card, a PCI 802.11 card, or a component such as this one. Click here for places you can get the original AirPort card.

  • Airport Wireless Card not connecting to ABS

I updated my ABS firmware a few weeks back when many people did and had issues with the update, no wireless connection. I rolled back to the previous ABS firmware version with no luck. I went thru several hard resets and go nothing. So I just went ahead and updated to the current ABS firmware version. I have no problem using the internet over the lan and other computers can connect wirelessly, but the wireless on the G4 Ti won't connect. It shows and error window. I thought the wireless card went dead, but it works just fine on other wireless networks. Any thoughts would be great.
    Powerbook G4 Ti OS X 10.4

ok i'm back again. so now i'm on to the internet but my connection is really weak, 1 bar. i talked to the guy who installed the wireless router and he said that its because the aerial is in the base and has to receive the signal through my desk. but he also said that he didn't know much about Mac's. so i'm not to sure he knows what he's talking about. is there any other reason why i'm getting a weak connection. i tried moving my mac around but that did not help.

  • Can't see my own Airport - can connect to other networks. Basestation works

Until recently my Airport Express worked fine (and had done so for a year or so). But a couple of months ago I started having problems connecting to it, and finally a month ago my Powerbook couldn't see the basestation at all. I could still see the other networks in my area, and connect to these (including some airport express networks), so I reasoned that my Airport Express was dead and had it exchanged for a new one...
BUT when I brought my new basestation home i STILL couldn't see it from my powerbook (even if I placed it 3 ft away). To double check I tried it at a friends house (with his PC), and he could see the basestation just fine...
    So my question is this:
If I can see (and connect to) other networks than my own airport base, and another computer can connect to my airport, and my ADSL works fine with a cable - where is the problem? I really have no idea where to start looking...
please help me, this is frustrating...!
    thanks, Lars

Back again, more frustrated than ever...
I had my friend come over, and with his PC and my Powerbook 10 inches apart, both situated less than 10 feet from the basestation, we can see exactly the same wireless networks - EXCEPT my very own basestation, which only my freind can see (on my friend's computer it's named "Apple Network edc585")!!!!
This leads me to think that somewhere in some program on my computer there's something blocking my access to my Airport... The only thing I did recently which has to do with the internet is that I installed an Apacheserver, but this didn't have immediate effect on my airport - so I can't think why it should have now...
Where can I go? Is there something I can uninstall and reinstall? Should I trash the Airport-assistant and reinstall from my airport-cd?
    Help pls...

  • Airport wireless card

We are new to Mac computers and trying to figures things out. This discussion board helps out more than Apple care.
Do you use Airport to connect to the internet when you away from your house. If you go to the park or anywhere to you click on airport to find an available network? We just trying to figure out how Airport works.
    Thanks,
    Doug & Diane

Airport is exactly the same as "wireless" on a PC.
If you are within range of a wireless base station that you are permitted to access, then it enables you to surf the net.
The most common usage is at home (or in an office) where the broadband internet connection is connected to a wireless router - which then makes wireless networking available to anyone who is in range, and knows the appropriate password.
However, if you are in a park, it is unlikely that anyone will have configured a wireless network for you to access. In such a situation, you probably need "mobile wireless" (wireless networking from a mobile phone provider). This is not built into your Mac, and will require a peripheral device (such as a USB modem) to be plugged into your Mac.
You can get good information by selecting "Help" in the Finder, and typing "Airport" or "wireless" (without the quotes).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Airport wireless card not installed

Hi everybody, just wondering if anyone has suffered the same problem as i have...any help would be appreciated.
Basically, late 2007 120GB white macbook, bought new. i also run windows xp on it in bootcamp.
a few months ago the laptop started freezing up completely in both OSX and XP and would need a hard restart, on restart there would be no recognition of airport or wireless internet. when looking at airport in OS X it would say that there is no wireless card installed.
however, after a few restarts and resetting the PRAM, the wireless would cough back into life for a bit before freezing completely again and the same process encountered.
for about a month now though there seems to be no way of getting recognition of a wireless card at all, but the laptop is not freezing anymore.
any one had this problem and managed to resolve it?
ive had a bit of a poke around using google but havent really found out much about it....
just to complicate matters, my OS X disks that came with the macbook cant be recognised by it! (with no scratches or marks on them) but my OSX snow leopard disks that came with my 2010 imac do. ive done the system analysis thing with them and nothing showing.
    cheers for any help.

Take it in for repair.  You may not be able to use the installer discs that came with your iMac to reinstall OS X on the MB because the OEM discs are usually machine dependent.  Also, you cannot install on more than one CPU at a time.  It would violate your software license to install from the same installer DVD on two machines.

  • AirPort Menu not showing other networks except the one it's connected to.

AirPort menu is strange indeed. Only for the first time, it shows the list of all available networks.
Now I cannot see any other networks. Is this a bug or something?

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take you a minute or so to try.

  • Getting WMP100N Wireless card to acquire network from a WRT54G Wireless Router

Card is version 1.0 and router =Version 6. Have had router for a while (Slaved it off a wired router and used just for laptop connectivity to the wired net.) Have moved and found that wireless connection is more advantageous here. Bought a WMP100N. Installed and ran the setup. It connects to the router with a sterling signal. However, the card can not seem to find or connect with the network. According to the FAQs, it is suggested that my firewall conflicts with the hardware firewall in the router. Well, the router worked fine with Zonealarm when it connected thru a wired Linksys network card. What's different about the wirelesss card and how do I get it to connect? By the way, I was not aware that my router came with an organic firewall. I know that it was NAT configured (which functions as a de facto firewall) but not that it specifically contained a hardware firewall. Also, I still have the wired card installed in the machine. I've disabled it. I have tried just unplugging the cable. I haven' uninstalled it. My firewall ignores the old card when I disable it (As it should.) However, it still doesn't connect with the wireless. I'm afraid to kill Zonealarm and be protected with a supposed firewall that I'm not sure exists.

Try uninstalling & reinstalling the adapter & it will definately work!!

  • PCI wireless card connected to network but safari says not connected to net

    Hi everyone
I moved my computer and had to change from wired ethernet to wifi. I installed a ralink PCI card in my MDD G4 dual 867. It sees the network and connects but Safari doesn't know it is on a network. What am I missing? I also have to connect manually every bootup. How do I setup autostart? My wireless router is a D-link DIR-615. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Dave

    Hi David,
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • HPE-475a wireless card not detecting networks

For the last few months, every now and again, my computer would start up but be unable to detect any wireless networks. It seemed that simply shutting it back down for an hour or so would magically resolve it. Some research at the time suggested that it was unable to detect a driver for some reason.
However, today, several hours of the computer being off has not resolved the issue, and the device manager suggests that the card is working fine, without any driver troubles. Perhaps I am looking at the wrong thing.
I have been able to connect using an old wireless dongle, but I don't want that to be the permanent solution.
What can I do to better diagnose and resolve the issue? I've searched a bit but couldn't find anything which seemed specific to this situation.
    Product name: HPE-475a
    Product number: BU082AA#ABG
Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1
    Error messages: None.
    Recent changes: None.
Troubleshooting performed: Attempted to "Diagnose" through Network Connections. It suggested to check the router. The router is fine, multiple other devices are able to connect. Diagnostics then says it cannot resolve the connectivity issue.
    Thanks in advance!
    - Phil.

    Hi,
If WIFI was working fine using the current router then the mixed mode setting is not the problem.
If Device Manager shows no errors and you cannot connect using wireless then the WIFI adapter card is, most likely, the problem.
Good to hear you have an extended warranty.

    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
        Restart the computer.
        Start up in Safe Mode.

  • Airport Wireless card for MacPro April 2008 FA970LL/A

I see from another post that part # MB363Z/A works for MacPro January 2008, but I just wanted to know if anyone out there has installed this part in a 2008 MacPro FA970LL/A (spring)

Ok so I am having a conversation all by myself lol! Seriously I called a Mac Genius and he told me that the part number is MB988Z/A which is the same airport part number for the 2009 MacPro's! Now if you find this part number it will state that it only works with 2009 MacPro's and not earlier Mac's!
Apple should really get it's story straight! Heck, I am not trying to replace an engine in a Ferrari!
