Airport with Netgear?

Will the airport card connect with a 54mb netgear router? Or can i use my netgear dongle on my mac ibook g3? The dongle is a WG111 btw. If not what can the airport card connect to?
Thanks

Let me see if I can help sort this out.
Any Apple computer that is equiped with either Airport Card or Airport Extreme Card can connect to any wireless Network.
There are of course issues with the type of Network and Confiquration issues as well but they will work.
Next when using the term Airport be careful to understand we sometimes have a problem understanding do you mean
Airport Card (802.11b)
Airport Extreme Card (802.11g)
Airport Snow Base (802.11b)
Airport Extreme Base (802.11 b or g)
Airport Express Base ( 802.11 b or g)
802.11b (also referred to as 802.11 High Rate or Wi-Fi) -- an extension to 802.11 that applies to wireless LANS and provides 11 Mbps transmission (with a fallback to 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps) in the 2.4 GHz band. 802.11b uses only DSSS. 802.11b was a 1999 ratification to the original 802.11 standard, allowing wireless functionality comparable to Ethernet.
802.11g -- applies to wireless LANs and provides 20+ Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band.
Also remember there are literaly 100s of different Routers on the market and many are ETHERNET ONLY while others are either ETHERNET or WIRELESS. So you must also be carefull to select the correct router for the type of network you wish to create.

  • Using airport with netgear CG3100

since installing a new Netgear cable modem / WiFi router my airport express connection to speakers has failed and I can't get airport utilities to "find" the airport express. Is this likely to be a result of something with the Netgear equipment? Do I need to configure something other than trying through Airport Utilities and reconficyuring the Airport Express (which I have tried without success at this time)

    Hackintosh,
terrific answer; for one of my 2 airport expresses. This was a great solution. So easy to configure from my phone for a task previously very difficult.
For my other express I'm getting an error message after the gathering data step which says "The Airport Express named "Apple Network 6fe5d5" cannot be set up by this"
By memory this airport express is slightly older than the other.
    Any other suggestions?

  • HT1731 Help installing Airport Express with Netgear N150 wireless router? I hav

    Hi,
I just purchased the newer Airport Express (new) and am having issues using it in client mode with my Netgear N150 wireless router. All I want to use it for is streaming itunes from my aluminum macbook to my home stereo system, wirelessly.
I have followed the instructions that came with the device. No luck. I have followed the instructions that describe plugging it into an ethernet cable here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731
With the apple instructions linked above it would connect fine to my existing wireless network, using airport utility, with 'excellent' connection, but when I tried to switch in itunes to my device from my computer i get the pinning wheel and an 'unknown error' occurs.
I have setup a new wireless account and password on my router as desribed at this page, but do get confused when it tells me to use the hex key and $. Haven't worked that out yet. Any advice would be appreciated if this would help.
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20041017233832771
At best, after hard resetting the device several times, and following the instructions above at macworld, it now finds the device but only plays one blip second of a song, flashing amber from solid green, sometimes playing a second blip of a song, then pausing the song and switching to a flashing amber. By restarting my computer or opening AirPort utiliy I am able to find it again, but it either only plays one second of a song and drops again or turns green and is not able to be found at all by itunes (the button doesn't show up in the menu).
This is the second airport I have tried in 2 years. I purchased a used one and had nearly the exact same issues with a linksys router. Then it would play an album but reset if a song was paused.I had to hard reset it nearly every time i wanted to stream from itunes to my stereo. I assumed it was broken and sent it back. Figured I 'd give it a new go around with a new unit since i just moved into a new house and am now shocked at how difficult it is to set up. I have never had this many issues with an apple device.
    My questions:
    1) How can I set this up with my existing router? What am I doing wrong?! Why is it so difficult?
    2) If not possible, what routers are compatible? I would gladly get a new router in order to stream music to my stereo from ITunes.
thank you for any assistance. i am pulling my hair out.

Try temporarily disabling the Windows 7 firewall, and then, try accessing the AirPort with the AirPort Utility again.

  • Airport Express + Netgear = low signal??

    Hi
i'm using an Airport express card in an Emac downstairs to receive a signal from a well-spec'd (and recommended) Netgear router which is upstairs and directly linked to a Mac G5.
No problem with the G5, but the problem is the signal strength is very low and it takes ages to log on for the downstairs Emac. Obviously distance is an issue but as the crow flies I suppose we talking about 15 m as the crow flies and one floor away with maybe two brick walls and wooden floor but no other (known!) significant barriers. This is a normal domestic house using normal building materials.
The spec indicates this should be no problem, so why the low signal?
Anyone else had problems with Netgear 'quip, or Airport Express? Both come highly recommended so I am somewhat surprised.
Any clues from anyone would be most gratefully received!
    cheers

Brick walls do not allow high radio frequencies to pass easily. So, the brick walls may very well be the problem. Is there any way you can position the router so that the signals don't pass through the brick?

  • Pismo Freezes with Netgear WG511T + Orangeware driver - Please Help

    Hello,
For months I have been using Orangeware wireless driver on my Pismo G3/400 OSX 10.4 in combination with Netgear WG511T card with no problems at all.
Suddenly one day a black square appeared on the grey background when booting my Pismo. I red that is something to do with Kernel Panic but I don’t know much about that.
So it took several rebooting until Pismo appeared to be OK. But then a few times the screen just went black. That eventually stopped but instead Pismo would just freeze.
I then discovered that if I take my Netgear card out my Pismo, it unfreezes and start to work normally. If I then try to insert the card again while the computer is on the card wouldn’t connect with my router but only one LED would flash.
I eventually reinstalled OS but to no avail. I am so puzzled.
I would be ever so grateful if somebody could make a logical sense of all these symptoms.
    Many thanks again
    Alex
    PowerBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Alex,
Sorry to hear of your contuing problems...
The PC card icon in the menu bar is reporting as expected; see the bottom of this page:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Buffalo/BUF80211B/
Have you tried a Safe Boot (restart pressing the shift key), then inserting the card?
Have you uninstalled the Orangeware software?
Have you run Software Update to get the latest AirPort software? It is now up to version 4.2. My suggestion is after Software Update has checked what you need, go to the menu bar > Update > Download Only. You can then restart the computer with shift key down (Safe Boot/Safe Mode) and then run the installers.
I have no idea if any of this will work, but give it a try.
If you have access to a FireWire PC card, pop it in and see if the Pismo freezes; this card is natively supported by OSX. If you wish to test the FireWire card, you will need a FireWire HD that has its own power supply since PC cards supply little bus power.

  • How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal?

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

how can I access a thumb drive plugged into an airport with my iPad? I am trying to set up an information point to serve weekly info over a NOT connected to the internet airport.

You can't. There are a couple of devices such as AirStash and the GoFlex drive that you can access over WiFi. They are limited, as I understand it, though.

I checked for the IP address, and I'm not pulling one
    up.
That's the problem. Even with no base stations available you should eventually within a few minutes get a self-assigned IP of 169.x.x.x!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106659
Maybe you could manually configure an IP but that doesn't answer what's wrong. How about a simple test - create a new Location in Network System Preferences and see if that helps. If it doesn't then maybe a re-install of Airport or System software would help. If the Airport shows up as an available network port then the card is probably OK.

I had my iTunes set up to play music through my receiver & speakers upstairs. I have airport with RCA plug ins to my receiver auxiliary jacks. Homesharing is on & everything checks out but it no longer works. Any suggestions? I have no firewall & I have removed Smith clean program to fix this issue. I am running OS 10.8.2

I called AppleCare this morning and Sean helped me out in a huge way. In all of my attempts, I had not done a factory-default reset on the main base station and apparently some sort of endless loop had occurred between those two stations. Sean was very helpful and patient with me, but now the system is working as promised. Moral of this story is if a factory default rest doesn't help on the "problem" base station, try resetting all of the units.

  • Configure Airport with an existing wi-fi network.

I''m trying to configure my new Airport express. I already have a wi-fi at home and my router is not an apple one.
I would like to stream music from my living room through my stereo and stream the same music in my dinning room through ihome iw2.
I want to send my music from my ipod.
I was able to connect (wireless) my ipod to ihome iw2.
When I try to connect my AirPort, my ipod is connect to internet but didn't find the AirPort even they are side by side.
My ipod is the only apple machine I have for now.
I find a discussion between Bob Timmons and Gunnar Lind few days ago who have the same problems as me, except that Bob give him some tips to perform with mac, so I'm blocked...
I'm french speaking, but read well english... so pardon me for my english writing if it's not perfect!
Thanks a lot... hope to enjoy music in all my house!
    Julie

Now, I cannot see the network related to my Air Port...
Is there any way to reset? I do it on the airport with the reset button, but on the ipod?
And I see when I was able to reach the  airport network that the ip adress was not the same, I think they should be the same, is it right? So How do I do that on my ipod?
I' able to see that the airport works, because I can send music wirelessly from my ipod ti my ihome iw2...
    I just miss little steps...
    Thank you for your help!

  • TC wireless failed; Use as USB backup with Netgear R7000 as router?

TC wireless failed. Can TC (500Gb hard drive) be  used as USB backup with Netgear R7000 as router or to nearby iMac?

No, you cannot use the USB to access an internal disk in the TC.
If its wireless has failed the rest will not be far behind.. the 500GB is Gen1 or early Gen2.. and they are simply failing in numbers.. you can probably repair it with a power supply, I kind of doubt the wireless itself would die but is symptomatic of failure of the unit as a whole.
If you want a backup just buy a large USB drive and plug it straight into the iMac. Choose the fastest interface you can afford.. ie firewire 800 is still head and shoulders better than usb2.. but usb3 or thunderbolt in the later machines are a big improvement.. with the later costing an arm and leg still, with most of the bits in between.

  • My xp cant connect to my macbook pro's Airport with password

hi, i have a problem to connect my xp to my macbook pro with a password
for example, if I set up my airport with 40 or 128 password, my xp will never connect to my mac
but, if i set up the the network without any password, my xp are able to connect to my mac and using the internet.
I just dont want anybody to use my network and is there any solution for me to connect my xp to my mac with a password. Thank you.

finally, I help myself. I found that _*O2 Connection Manager*_ can help me to connect my mac with password.
remember I am using WEP 128 Bit
Just remember to tick the boxes saying "Shared Mode Network Authentication" and "Active Key"
in your O2 Connection manager when you insert the password.

  • Mini Server: Wi-Fi issues with Netgear R6300

I've recently retired my TimeCapsule for the newer Netgear R6300. I've had no problem connecting my old Macbook, iPhone 4, my roommate's HP laptop, and even the PS3 to the Wi-Fi, but my Mini server has not been able to connect. To give some more background info that may or may not effect this, here's what I'm working with:
Netgear CMD31T DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem (recommended by Cox ISP)
    Netgear R6300 Gigabit Router
Mac Mini OSX Lion Server (purchased from newegg January 2012 and upgraded to Corsair's 2 X 8GB RAM)
I have had no problems with the Mini with the exception of 1 kernel failure that occurred shortly after installing and running "logmein", and no problems since rebooting in safe mode. Connecting between the router and Mini via ethernet has also functioned flawlessly. Why can't I connect this machine to my Wi-Fi?

    I see that router does:
    IEEE 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz
    IEEE 802.11 a/n/ac 5.0 GHz
Can you set it to try a 2.4GHz band ONLY?
