Airport woes...

so like many, since about the time of the mysterious two airport-related software updates, i've been having airport woes: internet connection randomly dropping. the woes escalated when i started getting hard freezes, where i would have to manually powerdown my macbook by holding the power button. i started noticing these freezes would occur when either i 1) turned on my airport for the first time after coming out of sleep, or 2) when my airport icon would gray out for a second, like it lost its connection. then the freeze would occur.
the woes have escalated: twice in the past three days, after coming out of a hard powerdown, i would click on my airport icon but it would say "No airport card installed." system profiler confirmed. but after resetting it would be okay.
but the freezes continue.
so i don't know if this is hardware or software-related!

If this helps anyone. Finally got it to work I was connecting with wpa2 personnal which I dropped to wpa it logged in straight away and then went back up to wpa2.

  • 10.5.5 update for airport woes

A quick look around the various sections of these usergroups shows that 10.5.5 hasn't done much for most people that have airport woes BUT I can report that for me at least, 10.5.5 has cleared up all of my airport reconnection problems. A sure way to send my Macbook into a "password request infinite loop" used to be when I took my Macbook too far away from my airport express, when I brought it back in range it would require a shutdown, same when I closed the lid or it went to sleep by itself, getting it to find the airport again would require a shutdown (mind you iStumbler coud see the express the whole time)
So Apple must be doing something as my reconnection problems seem to have vanished with 10.5.5
Now they just need to figure out why my wireless sensitivity is now about 25% of what it used to be before I installed 10.5.2!
    Mark

    Worked great for me.
Have you repaired permissions with Disk Utility, tried resetting the PRAM or starting up in Safe Mode.
Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen.
Check your System Preferences after each - reselect your startup disk and reselect your wireless network (even if showing OK).
If the above does not work then a factory reset of your AEB might be in order. The setup manuals for all AEBs are here: http://support.apple.com/manuals/#airport

  • Airport woes - suddenly stopped working

I’m unfortunately currently having Airport issues, and was hoping to get some help. My wireless network has been running fine for a while, but yesterday evening it suddenly stopped working. I could see and join my network, but it wasn’t working. When I connected my computer directly to my modem via Ethernet, it worked fine. I rely on wireless a lot though, so I unplugged and plugged everything back in, but it didn’t solve anything. Eventually, I decided to reset my Airport Extreme and Express (used as WDS) base stations and start over. I set everything up (standard set up, Extreme with Express as WDS), and my connection started working again. After about half an hour though, my internet went down again (just like before, I could see my network, but it didn’t work)
I tried unplugging everything again, but that didn’t help matters. I decided to try a reset again, but unfortunately this time around, that didn’t work either. When I check the network part in the system preferences, it says I am connected to the internet over Airport (green light shows), but I Safari loads for a few seconds and then tells me I’m not connected to the internet. I thought there may be something up with my DNS settings, but I checked them and everything is entered correctly. I reset everything a third time, thinking there might be something wrong with my Extreme base station (I even tried going back to default firmware but that didn’t help), and just used my Express station. Unfortunately, that didn’t work either (I get a green light on my Express base station, but it just won’t work). That is when I gave up. I tried again one final time this morning and am still getting nowhere.
The odd thing is, I haven’t changed anything…I don’t know why it would suddenly stop working. I hadn’t changed any settings, or messed around with the firmware or anything. I’ve been on the latest Extreme/Express software updates since a couple of months ago and have had no issues whatsoever. When connected directly to my modem, my internet connection works fine – so I’m assuming it’s not an issue with my ISP (UK Online). Since I can’t get both my base stations to work, I’m also assuming there isn’t a physical issue with them. FYI, these base stations are the old ones, not the new 802.11n ones.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be up and/or any suggestions as to what I could try?
    Many thanks.
P.S. I am on OSX Tiger, latest update.

It's always a good idea to completely power cycle the entire network after any changes or updates to a network.
If  you have not already done so.......
Power off everything....all devices....order is not important
Start the modem first and let it run for a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Start the Airport Express the same way
Start each computer and device one at a time about a minute apart
Check the network for proper operation

  • More Airport Woes

Hi Folks, ive just registered in an attempt to solve the mystery of the unresponsive airport on my 2008/2009 ally unibody macbook.
Please go easy on me as this has seen me very much "in at the deep end" regarding the inner workings of my Mac
Like many others i am getting a situation where the "fan" in the top bar shows empty indicating Airport is switched off and then it won't switch on. After a lot of forum searching i managed to get it working again by removing the 3 Airport preference files, clearing the trash and restarting, as suggested on here and another forum. But this only works for a finite period of time, sometimes 36 hours, sometimes 36 seconds! every other suggestion has had no effect (PRAM? reset, SMC reset, deleting automatic location in preferences)
Can anyone tell me if im missing something as it appears to my untrained mind that the files are fine when OSX rebuilds them but they quickly get corrupted, necessitating yet another delete.
    Many thanks in advance

Ok... I am thinking... only ten min?... hmmm... it should be on all the time.... ok... i think i have a reason... yes you are correct that if the network is reset from your computer if you delete the network settings, then re add it. It could also be the router I am using an airport extreme - time capsule (TC) but all routers are pretty much the same. But lets focus on the computer, and not mess with the router unless we really need to. I like Lion, but you are in constant use of a track pad on your computer - which I dont mind - and I own a laptop. The direction of the gestures on the trackpad threw me at first, and I had to change the default settings in the system prefs. There are a lot of under the hood improvements at the same time there are some liked and not liked visual improvements (but I am open minded and leaning more to liking it and learning new things all the time). If you dont have it, and thinking of getting it make sure your your computer has at least a system that has a core 2 duo processor. I have 3 gigs of ram on mine, I am not sure what the min for ram is but being the system has more under the hood muscle - I tend to (most time) keep my computer at my desk on a Griffin stand but some time use it on the bed or couch or at the dinner table. The machine runs the same maybe some warmer, which does not bother me. I understand the processors made after the core 2 duo are able to handle the muscle of the OS easier. I also religiously back up my computer using the built in hard drive in my router, but many of my friends just carry with them an external hard drive that they connect at least once a day and we all use the program Time Machine in the system prefs. If you have any applications that use the Rosetta archichetecher - they will not work anymore. I knew this was coming since 10.4.11 so it is not a bad thing. Apple is going all 64 bit and is 99 percent there (the third party apps have to catch up- although most applications have headed there  already) but the hardware is already 64 bit. Everything has to be 64 bit because the next processors ten to 15 years down the line are going to be 128 bit (just like the gaming computers revolutiionezed) To check your apps go to http://roaringapps.com/ If there not listed then your apps will not work. I use Office 2008 and I have not had any problems even though they say there may be few minor ones. I also use a lot iWorks '11 and more and more are using the latter. Overall I do like Lion, but see if you could play with it at a store before you buy it (it is similar in looks to snow lepard - some - but some people are complaining for nonsense or in their minds big reasons especially since the OS X (Lion) is a power horse, and it also has some getting use to as well as some under the hood changes are going on for the first week you have the computer
... Oh i looked for the system profiler but i think it is now called system Infomation in Lion ( not sure) ok ( it may not be the right reason for your dilema but ... try this go system prefs and and click network, click the advanced button check to see if you have to networks by the same name. If so delete one or both of them under the first tab (prefered networks - its the first tab for me). Also under the . TCP/IP tab click the Renew DHCP button. If this does not work, try resetting network again - delete the location, go to automatic, then go to assist me then hit apply... let me know. I am curious.
also have you run disk utility?

  • My fix for airport woes

Although I am deeply disappointed that Apple has been unable to fix the airport problems that many of us are experiencing I have come up with a "fix"
I purchased a Newer Technology' MaxPower wireless USB adaptor that allows me to bypass the built in, damaged by 10.5.2, airport, and am happy to report that my MacBook is happily connecting to wireless networks once again. Great signal strength (despite Newer Technology's advertising it is about the same as my MacBook pre 10.5.2.
So if you are at your wits end, like I was, at your crippled airport this solution does work.
    Mark

No you are clearly mistaken. The Self-Assigned IP address problem exists on many Macbook Pro models, including the current model, which I mentioned as being the original computer with the problem. While my 2008 Macbook is older it was working perfectly on Snow Leopard and didn't suffer issues until switching to Lion. So clearly the problem exists on the operating system and not so much the hardware.
I called Apple Support  and they had no fix for the problem and told me that this would hopefully be addressed in a subsequent update. It wasn't until I came accross the answer after trying many different methods that I got both of the Macbooks to connect to my router. Otherwise I wouldn't or could not have been surfing the internet for the last 4 months.
    Cheers.

  • Internet sharing via airport woes

    Hi,
apparantly an thunderstorm fried my ethernet-card in my MBP this morning. Now I am struggling to get internet-access via my iBook G3 which has DSL-boradband via ethernet (pPOE) (either via firewire or airport) but don't succeed:
    1) file-sharing eithert via airport or ip over firewire works
    2) I have set up my iBook to share internet via airport, enabled web sharing as HELP recommends.
Internet sharing nevertheless doesn't work for me: error message (in network-status) says (translated from German):
…Airport has self-assigned IP-Address and is maybe not able to connect to the internet.
I have used the built in settings, changed nithing manually. Any ideas?
    Greetings,
    Rolf

OK. To your information. Today I tried the following: I switched off and on internet sharing twice after boot and voila, wifi seems to work fine. Yeah, that´s what I call a sophisticated computer system. Really crappy stuff!

  • Bizarre Airport woes (different from other posts)

Hi everyone. I did a big search before posting and didn't find any posts that exhibited these particular behaviors, so I thought to post here.
    Airport on my MacBook Pro (core duo) has recently stopped working every few days. The following happens, apparently with no real direct cause;
    - Internet connection no longer works, though it says it's connected to my access point.
    - No other wifi points show up (normally there are 8 or so).
    - Bars drop to 4; normally it is 5 and strong, but immediately drops to 4 when it no longer works.
    - Disabling Airport and re-enabling it doesn't work. The only solution I've found is restarting my mac!
I've tried standard mac troubleshooting methods (disk permissions, disabled extra network features, etc.) and nothing has resulted in a change. Every few days the connection is just gone and nothing seems to bring it back except for a reboot.
    Some specs;
    - Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
    - Wireless Card Firmware Version: 0.1.31.1 (the latest?)
Also, I'm seeing this in the console log every few hours or so, but I don't know what is causing it, or if it's related to this problem:
launchproxy[7893]: /usr/sbin/smbd: getnameinfo(): Non-recoverable failure in name resolution
    Can anyone help? Obi-won? Bueller?
Macbook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2GB Ram, Glossy, just beautiful...

It happens to me regularly as well. Usually late in the evening / night:
1/ internet would slow down to a crawl and then the connection would go off completely.
2/ no other wi-fi point would show up
3/ applications regularly connected to the internet (typically Skype and Mail) would start showing the beach-ball, force quitting them would not work
4/ no new applications would start up
5/ the system would become unresponsive
6/ "hard" shut down would have to be performed

  • Macbook airport issues fixed?

I just ran Apple software updated and it include a fix for time machine/airport drivers.
Tada, its all fixed...or so it seems!

My wireless card firmware has gone from 1.3.2 to 1.3.4 but I haven't noticed any difference to performance at all. As soon as I take my MacBook more than about 15 feet from the airport I stop getting its signal, (I used to be able to take it 100 feet from the airport and get a good signal.)
Meanwhile my iBook with 10.4 working with the same airport express can get a signal 100'+ away from it.
If this is "the fix" for Macbook airport woes I'd say we are stuffed. I've just ordered a USB adaptor so I can at least use it when I travel at wifi hotspots.

  • Several Questions: Airport Extreme, Wireless Internet, AOL

    I have several questions...
First does anyone know which printer brands/models are compatable with the new Airport Extreme?
Second, I recently made the switch from PC to Mac and the first time I tried to connect wirelessly to the internet, it was unsuccessful. If I wish to connect to a non Mac server, is there a special setting airport must be on?
Third, My AOL browser is going much slower then Safari and it has gotton progressivly worse! I can't even use instant messanger and it takes forever to surf the web. However, ichat and safari work just fine and my other windows computer has no problem with AOL. Is there an explanation for this?
Thanks... Answer which ever questions you know the answer to!

Suggestions from MacFixit for Fixing Airport Woes
    - Try changing the wireless specification mode used by your router (or base station). Try switching from 802.11g to 802.11b, for instance.
    - Disabling coconutWiFi-- an application displays you a small aqua-bubble at the top of your screen which indicates whether you're in range of a wireless network or not -- may resolve an issue where AirPort connections toggle between normal speed and dismal speed.
    - Delete all stored wireless networks from the Preferred networks list, then add back any used networks via the following process:
    Open System Preferences
    Go to the "Network' pane
Select "AirPort" from the "Show:" menu
    Click on the "AirPort" tab
Select "Preferred networks" from the "By default, join:" menu
Delete any networks from the list (using the "-" button) that you do not regularly use
    Click the "Apply Now" button
    - Reset the PMU.
    - Turn off the Mac OS X Firewall (in the Sharing pane of System Preferences) resolved the issues in his case.
    - In some cases, deleting the AirPort preferences can resolve the issue:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
Finally, AOL. AOL's application is a PPC-only application so it must run in the Rosetta emulation on an Intel Mac. This consumes additional RAM and CPU resources and causes PPC apps to run slower (aside from the fact that AOL is painfully slow anyway.) The problem will seem aggravated even more if you have less than 2 GBs of RAM installed. I recommend not using AOL. If they are your ISP you might consider getting a different one. You have Safari which is a far superior browser.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

    Ganapati,
Did you try passing the customer_number like -1 or some random high number that does not exist in hz_cust_accounts table in the account_number for party_type='PERSON' in the table oe_customer_info_iface_all?
As I see this check for the first_name||last_name is done only of the customer number is not passed and customer_number is not used any where in the customer creation (if you are using automatic numbering for the customer accounts then you will obviously not passing any value to new_account_number which is used to created).
Give it a try while I keep myself busy with my airport woes here.
    Thanks

  • Transmit Rates in Leopard

+Out of frustration, I just wanted to share my AirPort woes as well...+
Option-click your Airport status in the menu bar and list your "Transmit Rate" value. I'm curious what people are able to consistently achieve in a Leopard environment.
My Transmit Rate has always been 1, even in a 10.5.0 clean install on an external firewire drive!!!! This is also displayed in the Airport Utility for Wireless Clients, 10.4.10 Tiger systems in the household have achieved 240!!!
    Transmit Rate: 1
    Router: AEBS Gigabit
    Wireless: 802.11n, b/g compatible.
    Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Other symptoms contributing to Airport weirdness:
    • Random connections to router. When selecting a network, the password dialog box will return a "Connection timeout," "Connection failed" or even "Incompatible Security."
    • "AirPort: Scanning" in the Airport status icon in the menu bar. When pages seem to load slowly in Safari, select the AirPort icon in the menu bar and as soon as the line "AirPort: Scanning" refreshes to "AirPort: On" the web page loads completely.
    • The only time I achieve values at 130, I am only able to receive a Self-Assigned IP Address.
    • Connecting to a Linksys WRT54GS router, slows down the transmit rate of the router and all other connected PC/MAC systems to 1 mbps.
"Solutions" that never worked for me and always resulted in Transmit Rate of 1:
    • Reboot into Safe Mod (hold Shift upon boot)
    • Disable IPv6 (in Router or Network settings)
    • Clear PRAM (Command-Option-P-R upon boot)
    • Switching to fixed channel
    • Open WiFi (no security)
    • 802.11 b/g only
    • strong passwords
    • deleted keychains
    • Archive and install
    • Clean install!! (this confuses me the most, it should work, right??)
    • etc, etc, etc....
    Dear Apple,
    Please fix!!

Thanks JC, I'm about 5 feet away from the base station at the moment. I randomly used channels 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 all resulted in Transmit Rate of 1.
Next steps...install copy of Tiger to an external and verify AirPort connection in that OS. Will update as soon as I do that...

  • Import install deails while importing order

    Hi,
We would like to import installation details for RMA orders which is getting imported via order process API.Install details can be entered in the OM screen from lines->install but I do not see any structure in the API to upload during order creation via API.
Please let me know if some one did this before
    Thanks

  • Airport express "G" - My woes and some thoughts. . .

I got the airport about this time last year. it worked great and i loved it. In December 2007 I moved to an apartment. I got the local cable co's internet, ran it to my ax and all was well. 6 weeks ago, due to our wonderful economy, i had the cable shut off as I talked to one of my neighbors who has wireless internet running unprotected (no password)..i asked him if i could leech for a bit till i got things sorted. he said cool and all was.....hmmm. SO in my airport menu i select his network and my internet works, sometimes drops then comes right back but no biggie. I reset my ax to just do airtunes and join his network, it restarted and voila, airtunes. problem is that in the last month i get a lot more drop outs and if i go more than 2 days with out streaming by ax disappears and i have to do a hard reset to get it to show up in the utility. The light is green but nothing...sometimes the amber light blinks and it never come on line at all....grrrrrr.
could all my newfound ax woes be due to the fact i am adding it to his network? i had no issues at all when i created my own one with my internet and airtunes.....
    anyone?
EDIT: let me ask this then...when i am streaming music from my mbp to the ax, am i doint it dorectly or am i using his network? If I am sending music from my MBP to the ax via his network then that would basically answer all my questions, if the mbp goes direct then I have no clue....
    edits as i am brainstorming

EDIT: let me ask this then...when i am streaming music from my mbp to the ax, am i doint it dorectly or am i using his network?
It goes from your MacBook Pro to his wireless base station... then from his base station to the AX. So it depends on the performance of his base station and network.

  • Help! Repeating sequence of Snow Leopard woes! Boot freezes, airport errors

Okay. I seem to be experiencing a cocktail of problems on my MacBook Pro that are similar to those individually reported in other threads. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I've searched and haven't so far found a thread that replicates all my problems exactly and in the same way …
    So here goes.
I am on my 3rd install of Snow Leopard. First time I updated from Leopard; second time I erased and installed, then restored from Time Machine; third (most recent) time I erased and installed and have not restored anything except my files from Time Machine.
    I'm on a new MBP (2.8GHz, 4GB memory, bought new in Aug/Sept)
Each time I've reinstalled, I've experienced a few trouble-free days in which I think: Ah! Finally fixed it. Then the problems start to creep back in. They are:
    1. airport starts to turn itself off. Its icon will be there in the bar, but as an empty triangle. Turning it on will not work (nor will going into preferences, edit locations solution proposed elsewhere). This initially only ever happens when booted from cold. A simple restart will solve the problem.
    2. airport icon disappears from bar altogether. Again, only when booted from cold. But sometimes 2-3 restarts required before it will return.
    3. system starts to hang halfway through booting from cold or occasionally on a warm restart. It will do the chime, get to the logo and progress indicator, then the indicator will freeze after a short while of spinning and there it will stay. Power off and restart required to get past this stage.
    4. (Haven't yet reached this stage on my current reinstall, but happened on the others) After repeated instances of (3) which get more and more frequent, bootup will progress to a blue screen with a progress indicator. Periodically, this screen will refresh and the shade of blue will change; but the system will never get past this stage, not even on a Safe mode startup.
Once I reach stage 4, I cannot get back into my Mac, and will have to use the disc to reinstall. And the cycle returns to step 1.
As you can imagine, I'm getting a little tired of this process. That Apple startup chime is getting mighty tiresome. Is anybody experiencing this grim Sisyphean torment, or is it just me?

Download and run Rember which does more extensive testing. I don't use wifi, so have nothing to say WRT your airport issues. Have a bootable backup/clone? If so, boot with it and see if the problem's still there. It's possible that there's something wrong with the hardware, even though it passes the AHT tests, and you might talk to AppleCare.

  • Airport Password Woes

I am trying to connect to a Yahoo-BB ADSL modem using the built-in airport on my MacBook. My Macbook is the 2 GHZ Core 2 Duo 1 GB RAM white case bought in July of this year.
I setup the MAC adress and such all correctly. The problem is the WEP password. When I disable the network security my computer can log on. When I do not disable it and select the right security (WEP 40/128-bit hex), and enter the password, I get an incorrect password error. A windows XP machine connects with the same password with no problem.
What can I do so that the modem accepts my password?

Hi, it looks like I've had the same problem as you, where I was failing to connect to a router that I've seen two other computers (windows systems) connect to it without problems.
In the prompt to enter a WEP password, it has worked for me before to simply type in the password in that prompt and it's worked. This time though, I had to click on the dropdown menu where it says WEP and click on "128 bits." There will be a "128 bits hex" and a "128 bits alsci" and I clicked on the latter. Now I have wireless. Hope this helps!
