Airport won't connect

Hello to all,
this is my first apple computer and it was given to me. It's an Indigo and white Clamshell, OS 9.1, 128 ram, 10 gig hhd. The problem is, when I try to connect to wireless network, airport says the password is incorrect for that network. Well...I know it's lying. The wireless is a Linksys wireless N-Ultra, setup on a PC tower. Any suggestions????

As well as Grant's excellent link in his reply, you should also check if the wireless router has been enabled to operate in a wireless 'b' mode.
It sounds like you are detecting the network, ie. it shows up as an option to join, so this may not be an issue.
But if you are having to key the network name as well as the password, then the router may not even be listening on your frequency.
Most wireless 'g' routers (from about 4 - 8 years ago) offered wireless 'b' use as an option and most administrators left it available, but now with wireless 'n', enabling wireless 'b and 'g' can be detrimental to the wireless 'n' performance. So most admins will switch it off if they think there will be no devices over 5 years old accessing the network.

Powerbook G4 Airport Won't connect to my Wifi

I have a Powerbook G4 that won't connect ot my wifi.
My home network consists of a CIsco Vallet router broadcasting in Mixed B/G/N mode.
SSID is broadcasting
Channel is Auto
Channel Width is Auto
WPA/WPA2 Personal Encryption
The Powerbook will detect the wifi network, prompt for the password attempt to connect then it tells me "Connection timed out"
Any ideas?

I don't know if you tried it but sometimes restarting router might help. Does your laptop connect to anyother wireless ? You should try other places.
Try checking software updates , make sure you have the latest Airport update.
Some routers might not work properly with older Macs. For example , I have a 2011 router , g3 and g4 machines can't connect to it .

Airport won't connect to MBP

I am connected to the internet via my airport extreme, however my MBP will not connect to the airport to allow me to access my external hard drive. The external hard drive shows up in the airport system preferences.
I get a connection failed message saying "the network doesn't exsist or is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again"
I find this strange as I'm using the airport now to access the internet wirelessly. This is getting frustrating. I have turned everything on and off, rebooted etc. HELP

When my MBP started that same behavior, I found that I had accumulated a huge list of wireless networks on my travels. Reviewing the system log, I found my computer was trying to connect to one, a hotel network to which I had connected weeks before and miles away.
Here's how I fixed it:
1) Open System Preferences and select "Network."
2) Be sure "Airport" is selected in the left side of that preference pane.
3) Click the "Advanced" button. If the next screen does not have the "Airport" tab selected, select it. There should be a window with a list of networks.
4) Use the + and - buttons below to remove any networks you have accumulated that are not needed. Example: on mine, there are now only two networks--our home network and the one at a museum where I volunteer.
5) Once you'd cleaned off the list to the bare necessities, uncheck the option labeled, "Remember any network this computer has joined." This will not prevent you from using other networks on later travels but will prevent them building up and creating problems.
That completely cured my wake-from-sleep problems. and other have said it worked for them, too.

My airport won't connect right away; I have to turn it off first for it to connect

When I'm connected to the WiFi at my house and then connect to WiFi somewhere else it says it's connected but doesn't work and I have to turn off the Airport first and then turn it on again for it to really connect.

Hi, there could be several problems, even which part of the switch you push.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

Airport won't connect to the internet anymore after unusual reset

About a month ago, I was using my Mac normally.
Then one time when I had it on, it just resetted by itself. I don't know how. I don't know why, but it resetted. It turned off by itsel. Anyway. I turned it back on, and then I found out I could no longer get Airport to connect to the internet.
I then got a message that said "Your internal clock has reset, this may cause some programs to behave eratically".
Ever since I haven't been able to connect to the internet, but I have reset all of my clocks back to normal.
Sometimes 3 Bars from my internet connection show up when I start up the Mac but then my internet says connection error.
Afterwards, the three bars go away and my Airport says "!" .... and it picks up no internet connection even when my routers are on. I'm using another computer at the moment and it can connect to the internet successfully.
So I believe it is a problem with Airport.
What should I do to get my internet connected again, even though it already works? My Mac works fine otherwise !

I have a similar problem. I am using a Level One Home Plug (PLI-2030) bridge to connect to the network. Connecting directly to the computer works fine, but the computer will not connect to the internet through the wireless network. The wireless connection to the Airport Express base station is working fine. I have pingged the gateway and the connection is OK. The settings are as per those supplied, but the "Network Settings" on Network Diagonistics fails. Any Ideas?

Airport won't connect with WEP active

I have a Netgear router (the one Sky issue that everyone seems to have) and my Mac Mini refuses to connect to it when I enable WEP security, even when I select 'Other' from the Airport menu and input the WEP key.
I have to turn off WEP to be able to go online on my Mac. Is there a way to fix this?

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.
2. what are the possible consequences of keeping it unsecured?
If there are any neighbors near enough to connect to your network, you could have trouble from them sharing your bandwidth or worse.

Airport won't connect to WiFi

Hello,
This is a Mac Mini model 2,1, 1.83 ghz, Core 2 Duo with OS 10.6. I bought it second hand. It has always worked fine, but I connected to the Internet with an Ethernet cable. Now I need to connect by WiFi. I've tried to do it with two different WiFi routers that work with other Macs with OS 10.6.X I can't connect.
I didn't work with OS 10.6.7. I reinstalled the OS so I'm at 10.6 at the moment.
Under system profiler, I can see that an Airport card is installed. I see Status: Not Associated. I don't know what that means.
If I try "Assist me: Assistant: in the "Network" control panel, sometimes it finds my WiFi router and sometimes it doesn't. If it is found, I'm prompted for a password. But I am never able to connect. I'm sometimes told the password is invalid when I am sure I entered it correctly.
If I try "Assist me: Diatnostics: in the "Network" control panel, no problem is indicated, but under Airport Status, I see "Airprot is turned on but is not connected to a network."
I thought maybe the Airport driver was corrupted, so I reinstalled OS 10.6, but it didn't help.
I've physically examined the AirPort card. It looks okay. The antenna is connected and the cables looked plugged in okay.
What are the next troubleshooting step?
I'm guessing the Airport card is defective. You think so? I'm considering purchase of another airport card and installing it myself.

Oops. I'm still getting used to the new format. I posted this message in the wrong section. I can't figure out how to delete it or move it. If a moderator wants to move it to the Mac Mini section that's okay.
On the other hand, the iMac probably uses a similar AirPort card and maybe an identical one, so the answer might be the same.

Airport won't connect to network

Hi there. I'm having heaps of trouble creating and maintaining my wifi network. I will set up the network the usual way, Preferences> Ethernet/Airport> Internet sharing etc. All is fine and dandy, I can now connect to my iMac's wifi network from my phone. But wait! Now the internet is not working on my computer! So I go back to system preferences, connect to Ethernet, now my iMac's internet connection is working again, phew. But wait! Now I can't connect to my wifi network anymore! So back to sytem preferences to connect to wifi network. But wait! It's not even there anymore! Cool. Try typing in network name and password, doesn't find it! Repeat process a gazillion times, no wifi for olivehere. Please halp! I'm at my wits end. I'm using a 4-5 year old iMac with Snow Leopard, 10.6.8 with a crappy router without wifi. Thanks a million

it's actually working now, don't know how but it is.
still though, airport iMac shows 40 as peak connection in AirTrafficControl and right beside it the Macbook shows a peak of 55-56

Airport won't connect to all devices (Macbook and iPhone 5s)

I have an Airport issue, that I can't figure out.
My iMac and other iPhone 5s in the house work fine. My other devices will not connect and it's frustrating. The wifi on these devices works fine other places with different routers.
1) My Macbook Pro version 10.6.8 sees the Airport and says the Airport is connected. It will not connect to the internet. I have tried the following:

Exactly what model airport do you have??
Running what firmware?
Let me suggest the following.
1. Reset the airport to factory.
2. Do the setup with all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg Base station name.. AEgenx (put actual number for gen of the AE). Use two wireless names.. AE24ghz and AE5ghz to force the bands to the obvious name.
3. Do not apply passwords for wireless yet.
4. On the client computers. IPv6 must be set to link-local only which is now crucial to getting things to work.
5. Clean out all the wireless names.. from all the clients.. then reboot them and rediscover the wireless network.
6. Check all devices can connect to the AE. .if it fails, test with fixed wireless channels.. particularly 2.4ghz try 11, 6, 1 in that order.
No luck the AE might be too old.. but you now have the simplest possible AE setup and if wireless still fails it is hardware or client issue.
7. This is now the point where assuming everything works you add security .. WPA2 Personal with pure alphanumeric password mixed case and numbers.. 8-20 characters long.
Now check again that after you put in the password everything works.. make sure you set stuff to remember the password.

Airport won't connect in 10.6.6 or Win 7 (Bootcamp) on my MBA (Original 1.6 Core 2 Duo)

My original MacBook Air has all of a sudden stopped connecting to the wireless networks at my work. It's fine at home but not at work.
In both Windows 7 and OSX 10.6.6 it can see the wifi networks that are around but when I attempt to connect it just times out or fails to associate. Once it did associate, get an IP address but then dropped off again before I could make use of the connection.
Has anyone else had experience of this? Is there a way to reset the AirPort card/chip to fix this?

Hi Adam,
There's not really anything you can do to reset the chip. What sort of wireless encryption is deployed at your place of work? Is it 802.1x or some other enterprise level security? I've definitely seen some "wonky" things with 802.1x and Snow Leopard, it's what is deployed here at the university I work at and support. If it's something more basic like WPA or WPA/2 or worse... WEP then you can try:
Deleting the saved wireless network location
Creating a new network location
Removing any keychains associated with your credentials for the network
There are ways to "reset" the network software but it's pretty invasive and that's only a last resort. The fact that it works at another location just fine would tell me that there's no hardware/software problem.

Macbook Pro Airport won't connect for more than a few seconds on battery

My Macbook Pro will not stay connected to my work Wifi lan running on cisco AP1213G. It connects for a few seconds then drops the connecion whenever it's on battery power. On mains power it connects after saying there was an error but will occasionally not pass any trafic
SSID is hidden, network uses WPA.
AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 0.1.24

Airport won't connect to the Internet

I am having problems with using my wireless connection and I believe it is because I have inadvertently changed a setting or two. When I try and use my wireless connection Safari says "Server not found". When I go into System Preferences > Network there is a yellow light next to Airport and it says "Airport is connected to the network BTVOYAGER2110-FD. Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet." Does anyone have any idea what I have done or how I can fix this?

Airport won't connect well

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and the previous seamless and trouble free connection to my Airport Extreme wireless network has degraded.
Now, when I turn my computer on, or awaken it from sleep, Airport usually shows 3- 5 networks, 1 of which is not locked, and one of which is my locked network..
Sometimes mine does not show.
The order in which they are listed varies, and mine is often not the one selected.
Sometimes I can just click on “ Join other network “, follow the prompts and get connected via mine. Sometimes I have to use Network Diagnostics
How can I get back to the previous trouble free connection ?.

Check your Airport Extreme settings/configuration - if available, try enabling [√] 'Use interference robustness'
As well, do what you can to re-orient/unblock any antennae and relocate or remove other radio devices nearby in an effort to clean up the radio frequency climate.

Macbook Pro Airport Won't Connect When Macbook Pro Bootcamp Will

I have a Macbook Pro 2.16GHz Core Duo that has had problems with Airport connectivity since I got it. I can never get anyone to help me with it because it will never show the problem at the Apple Store.
One place that I have to work at has been very, very frustrating.
They have a number of access points called Wireless #1, Wireless #2, and so on. Every access point is a Linksys-Cisco WAP54GP. All of them are on channel 6. They are using a WEP 40-bit hex key with the same key on every AP. They don't understand the obvious flaws in their system, they will not change it nor help me...at all, so there's no point in suggesting things along that route.
I know that their network and their key works, though, because if I reboot into Windows on the SAME machine it works fine and the connection is great. Mac OS, however, will not connect and will not tell me why. All it will say is "There was an error joining the network." I have read suggestions saying that you have to put a $ or "0x" in front of the key to signify that it is a hex key (which I don't have to use on other WEP hex key networks), but when I try to type that in, the password dialog will not allow the characters $ or "x" and it beeps at me.
Does anyone have any help for me?

Prior to the last Security Update, I believe 2007-02, broke access to 2wire Routers. It was very frustrating to me as well. The fault or problem, I believe, may lie in a firmware update to these routers. I performed one for my 2wire router and I am now able to connect.

Airport won't connect when FW 800 drive is on

I'm having a strange, but very specific, problem. When I plug a firewire drive into my firewire 800 port, I can no longer connect to my airport network (airport hub is the original graphite version). This doesn't happen with the firewire 400 ports. I've tried different drives in the 800 port, and get the same result every time. Any suggestions? (Of course, I can just use the 400 ports, but I'm an editor and would like to take advantage of the higher speeds). Thanks.

Ok, it sounds like what your are trying to do, up-and-above your current configuration, is to both extend your Internet connectivity to additional wireless computers AND stream iTunes to a stereo...correct?
If so, your AirPort Express (AX) will need to operate as either a Remote or Relay Base Station in Apple's Wireless Distribution System (WDS) mode. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454) In order for this to work, you would have to use either another AX or an AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). However, there are some other 3rd-party routers (like Linksys) that may work as well. (ref: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121820)
What is the make/model of your current wireless router...and does this connect directly to your ISP's DSL/Cable modem?
