Airport won't turn on - Macbook

I'm hoping you guys can help me with this so I don't have to take my Macbook into the store for service.
I have a SR Macbook with the 2.2g processor, almost a year old.
I turned it on last night and tried to turn Airport on, it kept the menu icon highlighted for about 20 seconds like it was trying to start, and then nothing. So when I try it again, I get the beachball and that's it. All the other programs work fine, but whenever I put the cursor over the airport icon, it beachballs. If I try to shut the computer down, it starts to go, but won't ever actually turn off. I have to do that manually.
I haven't made any changes to anything recently, so I'm not sure what would cause this. Any ideas, or should I just take it in?
Thanks

Hello trip211,
I had the same problem.
The post of Kevin Hiscox solved my problem.

I've tried to turn the airport on and it says my airport card is not installed...
it has always worked till today... bot from now on nothing seem to help the airport work...
    Please help me!
    Thanks

You could try deleting the airpot from the sidebar of system preferences/network. To do this,
    1)  export the preferences for your airport to your desktop by pressing the gear next to the plus and minus sign above the lock.
    2) Delete your airport from the sidebar using the minus sign while the airport is selected.
    3)  After deleting the airport, apply the changes and then press the plus sign to create a new airport.
    4)  Then import the preferences back in and apply the changes again.
This may bring your airport back.  It worked for me.  Alternatively, people have been having success with changing the location of the airport.
    Good Luck.

  • Airport won't turn on after installing Mac OS X 10.5.7 onto MacBook Pro

I have had my MacBook Pro for about nine months now and the airport has works fine up until this point. For some reason whenever I try to update my system to OS X 10.5.7 my airport will not turn on. Instead of seeing the wirless bar icon in the top right menu I just see a triangle with a pull down menu that has the option to: "Turn Airport On". But whenever I try to click on it nothing happens. It seems like no matter what I try I can't get it to turn on. The only way I can get my Airport working again is to reinstall OS X. I am currently using OS X 10.5.2 and everything works great! So I am wondering why does my standard airport extreme on my MacBook Pro not work with OS X 10.5.7?

  • Airport won't turn off

Hi there, I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. My airport has been giving me trouble on and off. It's fine right now but sometimes it will just stop working. I won't be able to connect to any networks even though if I click on the airport icon I can see a few of them there. If I try to click on one it hangs for a bit and then doesn't connect. If I try to click on the airport icon and click turn airport off it does the same thing, hangs for a bit but then won't turn off.
If I try to go to network preferences it also hangs but this won't stop unless I got and force it to quit.
Finally, if I try to shutdown or restart the computer it starts to shutdown, gets to the point where all i see is my desktop but then hangs until I have to hold down the power button to turn it off.
When I turn it back on it seems to work fine but then a while later might randomly do the same thing again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello dathascome. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you might have a corrupted configuration file or driver with your OS X installation. I suggest the first thing to try is to create a new user account; log off of your existing account, and then, log back on with the new account.
    Did this correct the problem?

  • Computer Randomly Freezes & Airport Won't Turn on

Recently, the Airport has started turning off randomly or ending my connections and refusing to reconnect. The computer will also freeze at random times with no hopes of unfreezing so I am forced to restart quite frequently. I took the computer to the Apple Store and they tested all of the hardware and found no problems. They also reinstalled the operating system while leaving my files unharmed. SInce the problem has persisted, I can only assume that the problem originated from one of my files (but that could be a false assumation) . I accidentally downloaded some .exe files around the same time my computer stopped working properly. Maybe this is part of the problem. (obviously they are already deleted)
I have read many forums on this and not found a helpful answer. If anyone knows anything about this problem and how to rectify it please let me know!

I, too, am having this problem. Exact same symptoms. Seems to have happened after the Airport Extreme Update that I applied somewhere around October 20 2008.

ok.. somethins really messed up.. it's a 2012 model but when after i've tried installing a new SSD card, it won't let me turn wifi on (boot from external Hard drive) also, SSD isn't showing up...

It sounds like you opened up your MacBook Air and tried to install a new solid state drive in the machine.  Is that right?  if so, you have voided your warranty, as the MacBook Air is not supposed to be opened by customers.

  • Airport won't turn on after sleep

Recently purchased 2 new imacs(1-24", 1-20"). They are both having the same problem. When I wake them up from a powersave sleep the airport is turned off. This wouldn't be a problem except it wont turn back on. If I click to turn it on it doesn't do anything at all. If I go to assist me -> diagnostics it just says scanning... but never does anything else. The only way I can get back up and running is a restart. This is a problem because I run software that needs to send a backup to the server on shutdown. I have temporarily set the powersave up to 3 hours, but I would much rather fix the problem than work around it.

Hi, When the computer goes into sleep mode, it is like shutting it down, in that it halts any and all processes.
Because nothing is happening until it wakes back up, that is why Entourage won't get it's mail. MSN will disconnect whenever the computer is put to sleep (or more annoyingly, whenever it damned feels like it).
So yes, this is normal behaviour with sleep mode, and the only workaround I know of is to not have the computer sleep. (But the monitor can always turn off, and the hard drives spin down.)

  • Airport won't turn on after Leopard re-install

I have a mid 2005 iBook G4 that I upgraded to Leopard shortly after it was released. I also replaced the HD about 4 months ago.
About a month ago my OS started crashing. Sometimes accompanied by a startling and scratchy sound from the speakers. Sometimes the screen fades and a box appears in several languages telling me I need to restart my computer. Other times there's a bunch of gobbledy-gook on the screen (text I don't understand). I know nothing about this kind of stuff, but I did notice it said something about a kernel panic. I'm not sure how to retrieve a log of the crash info to provide more detail.
After a few weeks of this fun, I finally decided to re-install Leopard (I was sure to archive and preserve settings) and since then my airport has been refusing to turn on. I click the button that says "Turn Airport On" under network prefs but it doesn't respond. Turning it on using the menu bar at the top doesn't work either. I've tried restarting to no avail.
Is there anything else I can do to get my Airport to turn on? Could a busted airport card have been causing the kernel panic and OS crashes? Do I need to spend more money having the Mac Store repair it? I've already spent $200 on repairs and am starting a PhD dissertation soon -- I'm thinking this might be a good excuse to get a new Macbook.
    Thanks for the help.

After installing updates a 2nd Airport suddenly appeared in my network preferences. I set that one up to work off my wifi network and the old one went away. Now it works fine! Now I'll just have to see if it still crashes....

  • Airport Won't Turn On

    Hi,
Need help, airport box is completely empty, no gray bars. Go to internet connect, airport, turn on airport, grays out for 5 seconds then goes back to turn on airport.
Possibly think that I trashed the preferences on the harddrive folder for it yesterday.
    Thanks for the help.

Okay I've got it. Went into Network panel, went to proxies, checkmarked FTP proxy. Suddenly my internet connect signal was visible and it said power on.

  • Macbook Pro Airport Won't Connect When Macbook Pro Bootcamp Will

I have a Macbook Pro 2.16GHz Core Duo that has had problems with Airport connectivity since I got it. I can never get anyone to help me with it because it will never show the problem at the Apple Store.
One place that I have to work at has been very, very frustrating.
They have a number of access points called Wireless #1, Wireless #2, and so on. Every access point is a Linksys-Cisco WAP54GP. All of them are on channel 6. They are using a WEP 40-bit hex key with the same key on every AP. They don't understand the obvious flaws in their system, they will not change it nor help me...at all, so there's no point in suggesting things along that route.
I know that their network and their key works, though, because if I reboot into Windows on the SAME machine it works fine and the connection is great. Mac OS, however, will not connect and will not tell me why. All it will say is "There was an error joining the network." I have read suggestions saying that you have to put a $ or "0x" in front of the key to signify that it is a hex key (which I don't have to use on other WEP hex key networks), but when I try to type that in, the password dialog will not allow the characters $ or "x" and it beeps at me.
Does anyone have any help for me?

It will connect to other networks with and without
WEP. It will connect to other networks that use
    WPA.
There are many networks, though, that give me the
"There was an error joining the network.", and I
    don't know why.
I cannot enter a $. As I stated previously, the Join
Network dialog will not allow me to enter that
character when it is set to WEP 40/128 bit hex.
Also, as I have already said, I cannot change the
network to WPA. I understand the benefits of WPA
over WEP, but I am not the network administrator.
They will NOT change their settings. I know the
network works with Windows on my computer. What is
it about Mac OS that is preventing this?
Prior to the last Security Update, I believe 2007-02, broke access to 2wire Routers. It was very frustrating to me as well. The fault or problem, I believe, may lie in a firmware update to these routers. I performed one for my 2wire router and I am now able to connect.
    My theory...

  • HELP! Airport no longer turning on

All of a sudden Airport won't turn on from either the menubar icon or from the network preferences. It just doesn't react.
I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this.
    Thank you!

I don't have help for you, but will note that on my new (refurb) iMac, updated as of this morning, my Airport is acting strangely and unpredictably.
The iMac is my "base" cpu; and I use Airport on my MacBook to network and for internet connect.
    Both computers have 10.5.1.
Sometimes the MacBook can network hard drives (last night I used Screen Sharing); briefly I had internet sharing; at the moment the MacBook's Airport menu item is grayed out.
Sounds like a combination of newer processors (my "old" base cpu was a G5 mac mini--no problems) and 10.5.1, possibly the new security updates.
no answers for now, just diagnosis.

  • Macbook won't turn on, won't charge either (no green/amber light)

So I was cleaning my keyboard today (just with water and a towel) and after cleaning, the screen shut off but my macbook was still turned on (could hear the fans). It wouldn't respond to anything and I tried a hard shut down but this did not work either. I was forced to take the battery out to shut it down.
Now it won't turn on. I tried plugging it into my magsafe power adapter but it won't charge. There is no light (neither green or amber). My battery still has 2 green dots when I test it.
I've tried resetting the power settings by removing the charger, battery, and then holding the power down for 5 seconds. This did not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a very similar problem. My battery died about nine months ago and I've been going off AC since then. It recently started not turning on though.. I closed the lid one day and went for a walk and when I came back about an hour later it was like it was in a constant sleep mode. Since then it turned on once successfully. But I am getting the same dim green light for about three seconds and then it goes full. When I try to turn it on the fan or hard drive (not sure) starts spinning and the screen flashes but then it just sits with the sleep light on. When I read your thread though I realized I may have gotten it wet when carrying it to and from my car. I no longer have a warranty or care plan or whatever so apple won't help me one bit. SO yeah I thought I'd share that and maybe it can help you somehow..

Connect to iTunes and restore. If you have difficulty, you may have to put the device into Recovery Mode. See the instructions in this support document. If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

  • Macbook (2.1Ghz white 2008 model) display won't turn on during start-up

           hi all,
    my problem is pretty simple.
Sometimes, after having used an external display with my Macbook (using the Apple Mini DVI > DVI adaptor: http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9321G/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY ) the Macbook's own display won't power on during the next boot-up. I can hear the hard-disk start up, and the system boot, and I'm even able to navigate my way into the user login and shut the computer down (all via the keyboard). So the computer is definitely powering up (and in a seemingly normal way), but the display isn't.
For example, last night I was using an external display with my Macbook. This morning I plug the display back into my Mac Pro, then power-up my Macbook. But the Macbook's display won't turn on. It's as though it thinks the external display is still plugged-in. I know, that if I re-connect the external display, the Macbook's login page is displayed, but only on the external screen.
The problem only arose after I started using this particular external display (a cheap 22" BenQ, model G2222HDL 'senseye 3'). I wouldn't normally use the display with my Macbook, but my Mac Pro has a **really** noisy optical drive (CD/DVD), which makes watching films pretty unbearable (if you're into sound anyway, which I am).... so until I get my Mac Pro's drive sorted (when I have a few spare days when I won't be needing it), I'll have to continue using my external display with my Macbook to watch films.
My Macbook's specs are as follows:
    2.1Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook (2008 model - I think, maybe 2009?)
    4Gb RAM
    Running OS X 10.5.8
Are there any known display issues with these models of Macbook? Or are there any software/firmware updates that address any display issues?
In general, I don't update the software/firmware unless I need to, or unless something doesn't seem to be working properly.
However, I've just checked Software Update, and noticed there is an SMC firmware update (1.4). So I might give that a go and see if the problem persists.
However, the problem is intermittant, and kind of unpredicatable, so I might not know for a while if it solves the problem or not.
Has anyone else had a similar problems?
Alternatively, is there a possibility there is some kind of virus or file-corruption causing this problem?
My girlfriend has a similar model of Macbook (which she's never had any problems with). Recently I moved a whole bunch of files from my Macbook to hers, and she noticed that hers had a similar issue starting up, where the display failed to turn on.... so it seems like
    a) it might be a common-ish problem in this model of Macbook
    or
    b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?
I've been using Macs for about 15 years (yet, I don't consider myself a computer expert, when it comes to the technical details). In those 15 years, viruses have never really been a concern to me, as I've never really thought they were much threat to Macs. However, I guess, as Macs get increasingly more popular, there's a possibility people will write more Mac-specific viruses...?
    Anyway, I'm open to suggestions : )
    Regards,
    Sam
    PS I've tried:
-re-starting the computer multiple times (which sometimes works, but usually doesn't).
-re-setting the SMC (which usually works, but not always)
-plugging/un-plugging the external display to try and jog the computer into noticing it isn't connected (which doesn't work)

let me ellaborate on this part:
"b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?"
I mean, " perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine, and I've passed it on to hers?"
