AirportExpress with PC's

I bought an AirportExpress (at the same time that I bought my first-ever MAC) to use as a signal booster for my D-Link router (DIR-635). I have since learned that while an AE can join a D-Link, it cannot boost the signal. If I buy another AirportExpress, will my PC's and my iPhone be able to read the boosted signal? This is probably a silly question, but I've already wasted a lot of money trying to get wifi to cover my house.

Duane, thanks for the tip. I'm actually going to junk the d-link. The first issue is that it's randomly dropping the signal all of a sudden. But even when the signal is good, it's like 10-feet short of what I need and I simply cannot figure out how to extend its range (I've tried with a local computer tech and an extremely computer literate friend).
If I get another AX to use as a "base station" at one end of the house, will my PC and iPhone read the boosted signal from my second AX at the other end of the house? As I say, this is probably a silly question, since the PC and iPhone read the AX I have now when I've set it as the base. But I want to make sure.
Thanks.

  • Issues with upgrading AirportExpress to 7.6.4

Hi.  I have a 2nd gen airportexpress with firmware version 7.6.2.  Airport utility (version 6.3.1) in Mac OSX (Version 10.8.5) indicates that the device has a new airport express firmware update available, 7.6.4.  I download using the utility, and everything goes fine in temrs of downloading and updating.  But when the update is complete, the device start its reset sequence, and never gets out of there.  After several minutes, I get the following message: "an error occurred while updating the firmware -6727."  I turn power of the AE off and on, and device comes back in version 7.6.2.  I tried again, this time after performing a "factory reset", and the same problem keeps happening.
I also tried updating using my iPad (iOS 7 and latest version of Airport Utility App 1.3.2), obtaining the same results.
Have someone suffered the same?  Can anybody please let me know how they solved this problem?  Thank you.

Not really, but it will depend on what kind of pdf files you produce and if you use any standards for pdf conversion.
The main thing to look out for would be for the write with version 8 to make sure he doesn't produce 1.7 pdf files, as these will throw up a warning in earlier versions of Acrobat.

  • TC in combination with mac mini and WIFI

    Hello,
I am living in an apparment with provided internet - it used to be a cable modem. Now cable modem was deactivated by the owner and free WIFI was established in our house (but limited to three devices)
I connected my mac mini to the existing WIFI - no prob! Is is possible to create another WIFI with TC using cable connection between mach mini and TC?
If yes, please let me know how to set up the mac and TC.
    Thanks!

    What is this wifi for?
I have more than three devices which need WIFI connectio, unfortunatel!
If it is just to connect to the TC it is possible.. if you want to connect to the TC from the mini that is fine.. you do not need wifi for this.. just ethernet to the TC is fine.. so I just don't know what the wifi from the TC is for and if it requires internet access.
If you want internet access via the Mac, you can setup Internet Connection Sharing..
See OS X Mavericks: Share your Internet connection
It is a really poor setup though.. and tends to be unreliable, slow and means anytime the mini is off no internet to the other clients.
There are better ways to do things.
Put any wireless bridge, in front of the TC and use that to provide a wired connection. Apple Express can do this.. none of the other devices can. but wireless bridges are not hard to find and you can get cheaper ones than the apple.
This is what I tried, thanks to your recommondation! I connected the AirportExpress with the given WIFI and I've connected it to the TC via LAN cable, the TC now provides my own WIFI to all devices. But the mac mini, as well connected by cable to the TC does not have Internet access. To log on to the given WIFI I have to use a web-login (like in a hotel) but I have the impression that it doesn't work because of the hardware I have now connected. If you have any suggestions to this I would really appreciate it!
You will however not get out of the problem without creating more problems.. Internet access will be slowed and you will have double NAT issues.
I set the TC to bridge, no Double-NAT anymore.
    Thanks for now, 75% achieved!

  • Multiple AirportExpress - Setup Help

    Hello-
Wifi in my home is served by two AirportExpress Units. One at each end of the house. Both connected to the LAN via ethernet. I am running AT&T UVerse and do not want the AirportExpress units to admin their own IP's. Just creates too many conflicts on the network.
I want to have them both configured so that I can easily walk from one end of the house to the other, and my WiFi device (iPad, iPhone, MacBookPro, etc.) seamlessly connects to the AirportExpress with the best signal.
Can someone please give me run down of the proper configuration for each unit? I find the AE wizard a bit confusing.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Except that each Express will have its own device name, they are set up exactly the same as follows:
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to get to the wireless settings.
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your choice. Same wireless network name on both Express devices
No check mark needed next to "allow to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.b/g compatible) is a good choice
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal recommended, or WPA/WPA2 Personal. Use the same setting on both devices
Wireless Password = Your choice. Same on both devices.
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)

  • ITunes 10 - no external speakers on AirportExpress (Win7/64bit)

Since my update from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10 my AirPortExpress can't connect to the external speakers (Hifi-System)
    unknown error(-15000)
    http://yfrog.com/e9itunj
With iTunes 9 everything works fine. The only thing I changed was the iTunes update.
    Win7 ultimate 64 Bit
    iTunes 10.0.1.22
    AirPortExpress with Firmware 7.4.2

O.K. - I just got off the phone with Apple. For all you airport express users out there and Itunes 10.
The airport express needs to be reset. Remember the fun we had setting it up - well here we go again.
For those of you who do everything remotely like me, computer (macbookpro) here, airport express there (plugged into kitchen speakers on top of cabinets), internet router/wireless there ....
    1. Unplug the airport express and your computer.
    2. Go to where your wireless router is and sit near it.
    3. Plug your computer - with wired plug into an outlet [not sure if necessary but I did it this way, powered up]
    4. Replug in your airport express near the computer/router as well.
    5. Press (w/pen or paperclip) the little reset button on the bottom of the AirPort and HOLD UNTIL THE LIGHT FLASHES GOLD and then let go.
    6. go into your Utility folder in Finder and open the Airport Express utility
    7. it will see it then and you need to go through the same process as you did when setting it up in the first place. Naming it, blah, blah blah.
I did all of this and confirmed that my speakers worked! I did suggest to the guy, John, that Apple needs to post something so every frustrated user could fix this problem.
    Best of luck all

  • There was an error connecting to the network, try again!

    I bought a new Computer (Mac Mini) with Snow Leopard installed; On joining the network(WEP128Bit) airport extremebasestation and airportexpress with WDS-mode) suddenly the basestation didnt offer WEP 128bit any more. I cant remember precisely but i think ist got something to do with the firmwareupdate of the AEBS or that i gave up WDS and changed to „extend a wireles network“ , well it only offered „WEP transitory“ which did not work properly for some reason;
So i changed to WPA/WPA2 option and extending my network with the airport express.
This worked fine; two computers with leopard, the new one with Snow leopard and a windows Laptop as well as two Mobilephones could easily join the network.
BUT: My old Imac G4 with Tiger (10.4.11) could not join so easy.. (I changed the settings to WPA of course) The symptom was that on the right upper corner of the screen a message appeared saying: „there was an error connecting to the network, try again!“ and when i hit the „try again“ button up to 20 times then sometimes it suddenly succeeded to join.
I was just about to look after the wirelesscard but tried before one thing: I changed my network channel on the AEBS from „automatic“ to Channel 11.
From this time on i worked like a charm. I dont know why only the Imac G4 needed channel 11, but this solved my problem.

I am not sure what 192.168.1.193 is ??? The 16 port Asante switch??
Anyone know if there is a way to (easily) add "Client ID" names in XP? I went though my Macs and added names to help ID them in the router, but can't see where to add names in XP?

(posting that does not compromise my security??)
I think I need to figure out how to get the HP 4050 to renew its IP address? Then the router should assign an address to it.....I would like it to use the same address it has now so I don't have to recofigure addresses on the computers to print to it......hummm

Just tried turning off the HP 4050 and unplugging it from the wall. Then plugging it (power) back in and turning it on, trying to get it to renew its IP address with the AirPort Extreme router.....nothing. Still does not show up in my list of DHCP Clients.
Tried Restarting the router.....now I see no clients at all in my list of DHCP Client list..... grrrrrr
Can anyone tell me why AirPort Extreme is not seeing the HP 4050 as a DHCP client?

  • Bluetooth/wireless reciever for stereo

I have a powerbook g4 with bluetooth (i haven't made use of it yet) and I've been listening to music on my stereo simply through the audio out on my computer. I am looking for a small device I could lay on top of my stereo that could recieve a signal from my powerbook by means of bluetooth or similar so I can listen to music through it without being bogged down by cords. I searched the forums here to see anything similar, but nothing fit my needs.... any tips anyone? I'd really appreciate it!

I appreciate your response, but I assure you that I have, in fact, done extensive research on the subject before coming to these forums. I've tried endless search topics in google to find a hint or two... but the closest I've found is this:
    http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?MerchantId=&ProductId=202395
it uses bluetooth from an ipod via a connector and transmits it to a 'bluetooth powered" device that connects to your stereo. It mentions nothing, however, of using bluetooth already built-in my powerbook to transmit to the device. The whole point is not having to connect anything to my laptop to do this. I have wi-fi and bluetooth capabilities, so I would like to use the bluetooth built IN my computer to be able to transmit audio to my stereo and not have to connect anything.
Maybe a better question is this: Can my powerbook g4 TRANSMIT bluetooth (to a device) as well as receive it? or can it only receive it from a bluetooth mouse or cell phone?
If it can then I'll continue searching, if it can't then I'll have to fall back on the more of a hassle AirportExpress with Airtunes.
I'd PREFER bluetooth because of it's extreme wireless capabilities, wi-fi requires external power

  • AirTunes with AirportExpress cut or drop out problems - my solution...

I buyed 2 of the Airport Extreme one month ago (Firmware 6.3, Itunes 7.1.1), never got them working fine, till yesterday...
I have A Zyxel ADSL WLAN Router Switch. WPA-PSK as I wanted a secure Network. Both of the AX were connected with static IPs. WLAN was always working fine, but I had many cut outs with airtunes. I wanted a solution with lossles streaming audio with the possibility to connect my Receiver digitally. That's why I bought my first Apple hardware, as I was always told, Apple=Plug'n play. Very frustrating!
I tried other switches, Routers, WLAN adapters and cards, nothing worked. Airfoil does not support multiple speakers yet, so it's useless for me.
In the FAQ of the Airtunes, Apple mentioned to use lower security, as some Computers probably do not have enough power to stream music flawlessly. But my Computers really do have enough power! I think the AX does not have enough power to do that. So I created another wireless network with one of my AX. I set the security to WEP-40bit key and joined this new Network with my other AX. Not the best solution, as I'm now connected to the Internet or to the AX to use Airtunes. Cables could fix that problem, but then I could use a wired system instead...
I use Channel 11 for the AX WLAN (the only clean channel in my area), Multicast to 11, only G mode for Wireless and a 5 characters WEP-40 key and no WDS. Seems to work at the moment.
I hope this will help others with the cut or drop out problem. If you have a working AirTunes system, please post your setup. Mostly I'm interested in a Setup with working WPA...

Thanks, I hope I can help others with this annoying problem...
Sorry, I forgot to write about the RF Interference. Belive me, I spent hours and hours searching for a solution in the Internet and every checkbox the Admin utility offered me to try out... I'm working as a system engineer, and supporting computer systems since the early 90ties, so I'd say I have a bit knowledge about all the networking, WLAN, Audio... In school we had the Apple Mac I with the 12" monochrome monitor and appletalk for networking quite funny!
But back to the RF interference: At the moment I activated it on both AX I own. I have a microwave, wireless phone and I'm living in a Area with many WLAN access points. I can choose between 6 networks!
I'm the only one with a network higher than channel 6, so this area is clean at least.
As my AirTunes do work at the moment, I'm not going to try if I could also deactivate it.
Next step is to try if I can connect the AX Router to the internet. A connection to my ADSL router should do that, but up to now I had very strange behavior when plugging in a ethernet cable to the AX. If this will work, it will be my final solution, at the moment I only see it as a workaround...

  • Need help with G5 connected to AirPortExpress!

I simply can't find the source of this problem, and any help is very welcome:
When my G5 2x2,5GHz and OS 10.4.8 is connected to my AirPort Express network, the connection suddenly becomes very slow and it takes forever to download a simple page. The message "You are not connected to Internet" often shows up, and trying to reconnect fails. The only solution is to restart both the ADSL modem and the Airport Express.
    - The funny thing is that with my brand new MacBookPro and the old iMac G4, this never happens. They stay connected both to the network and Internet without any similiar problems.
Could it be the wireless antenna on the back of the G5, or could it be some security settings or OSX problems on the G5? I am not sure how to find the source of the problem...
    Helge K.

    Hello Helge,
I have a couple of questions.
How is the speed during a file transfer between the G5 and the imac ( say a large file) compared to the iMac and the Macbook?
Forget the web for a minute here and let zero down on the problem. Is it the current network, or a specific machine, or is it that basted ADSL modem?
Try transferring a file over your network and compare if there is a noticeable difference then lets move that G5 away from the wall ( the ant is in the back) and try with the G5 turn 180 degrees around, any better? If not double check the ant lead that connects to the card or take in for service and have the unit inspected for a pinched/ loose cable.
If moving a file around the network is ok then we have a web issue. Run a trace-route to Apple's main site and compare it to the macbook. What's different?
Nothing? Then there is the famous reset Safari and test or see what Firefox does.
    Good Luck,
    Cowsweat

  • How to connect Digital Optical Audio output iMac with Receiver Input

I have connected iMac with onkyo hts-3300 home theater system receiver through optical audio TosLink Cable.( http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Audio-TosLink-Cable/dp/B001ZU3G2I/ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&qid=1292865309&sr=8-2 ). Unfortunately there is no sound coming out from the Home theater system. I have verified the Receiver optical input is working fine by connecting with my TV optical audio digital out put and the it's working great. The only difference between TV and iMac is, on my TV, it has optical audio digital output and I can use this cable (http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-A102-02M-Digital-connectors/dp/B0002WPREU/ref=s r11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297320792&sr=1-1) to make it work. I can also verified my optical audio TosLink Cable working because I can see the red light coming out from the cable. So the only problem could be from iMac. I doubt I need to change the additional setting to configure iMac to use external optical audio setting instead of the buit in audio setting. Hoe can I able to do it? or my iMac(IMAC 21.5"/3.06/2X2GB/500GB/9400M-ITP
MB950ZP/A) doesn't support optical digital audio out put? I have follow this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12769423&#12769423 and to my surprise which doesn't work out for me. I doubt that i need to change some setting, but when I got to setting>> sound I cannot change any setting. I was quite depressed aldy. Can someone answer my question as i m a newbie here. Thanks a lot

Thank you very much for your reply.
@Király : May i know how to Open Audio Midi Setup? Is this Audio Midi Setup is in the locatated in the Setting in Mac Snow Leapord OS? or how to locate this "Audio Midi Setup " in Mac enviroment. Is it possible to open this Audio Midi Setup in windows 7 enviroment also? I Just want to get the audio from my iMac in Hts-3300 onkyo home theatre. YOur help is much appreciated
@rkaufmann87 : Thank you very much for your sharing about this http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ connection. for me what i understand is the digital audio output in airportexpress is the same as the audio out put in iMac in terms of details sepcs. So this airportexpress will only help you connect wirelessly to home theatre system, rather than waired connection. Other than that nothig much difference. So there is no point for me to spend extra bucks to attain the wireless connection. Unless the airportexpress have optical digital input, which i believe not. Correct me if I m worng, thanks

  • How to set up time capsule with BT home hub 4.0 & Openreach

    Idiots guide needed.
My TimeCapsule (year old model) had been running well from my BT Openreach box (without using the Home Hub 4.0) but recently had issues with connection dropping - BT said they've sorted out their end and can't see any remaining issues and can't offer me any more support if I'm not using the Home Hub 4.0
I reset the TC to run straight from the Openreach Box  still have issues with wi-fi dropping in and out (both on ethernet and wi-fi).
    Can I:....
    1)     set up Time Capsule running from BT Home Hub 4.0 which itself runs from BT Openreach white box (thus continuing to get support from BT)
or should i go back to
    2)      Time Capsule running straight from BT Openreach Box
Can some one post an idiots guide to either option?
Other stuff that may be important.
Macbook air running Yosemite (mid 2011 model)
    Apple TV
    Airportexpress
    Time Capsule
    2 x iphone 4s
    Kids PC
Ethernet and wifi for above - I generally run everything hard wired via ethernet.

The easiest and sure way is to use bridge on the TC as the method of connection. The TC then becomes a device in your network and gets its IP from the main router that I presume BT supply.
    Method is,
    1. Plug the TC WAN port into the BT supplied modem by ethernet.
    2. Plug the computer you are using for the setup into the TC by ethernet.
    3. Run the airport utility .. go to internet tab on the top menu..
In the bottom option, Connection Sharing choose off (bridged mode)
    4. Go to the wireless page and setup wireless connection as you like it.. using whichever band you want. And make sure security is set to the highest setting, wpa2 personal. Put in a decent wireless passkey.
    5. Press the update and fix whatever else the TC will show as needing fixing.. usually security stuff.
    6. You can then disconnect the ethernet and connect by wireless if you want. Any port on the TC will now be a LAN port, including WAN.
This is assuming BT supply a wireless router with built in vdsl/other type of modem. If so you normally will not be able to bridge the modem, unless BT are using pppoe authentication which they haven't in the past.
If you really need to use the TC as a router then you will need to work out an alternative method. You can double NAT by placing the TC in the DMZ of the BT router if that is an option. It is not without issues in general.

  • Need help with Apple TV + Airport Express setup

I am newbie to this whole Apple thing. Just switched from Windows world (20+ years of torture) to MacBook Pro about 6 months ago. Loving every minute of it.
    Here's what I currently have...
I have a 4000+ sq.ft. home with 3 levels on a 1-acre lot. I have 5 zones for music/movies - 7.1 dedicated Home Theater (lower level), 5.1 HT system for casual TV watching in Family Room, 2.1 system (music only) in my Home Office, 2.1 system (music only) in my Master Bedroom, 5.1 HTiB in Kids Bedroom. All systems have dedicated AVRs/Speakers/Subs (Denon, Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, Polk, Energy, Klipsch etc.).
I have 2 MacBook Pros and 2 Windows Laptops. I have AirportExtreme running a wireless network throughout the house. I have NAS attached to AE. I use iTunes to manage all my media content. I also have a iPhone 3G.
I have ripped all my CDs in Apple Lossless format into iTunes. I listen to free internet radio stations (NO Napster, Raphsody or other subscription-based services). Sometimes watch/listen free video/audio podcasts. I do NOT rent or buy movies/music via iTunes or any other source (just buy old-fashioned CDs/DVDs when neeeded).
Here's what I want to accomplish...
    1. Ability to "wirelessly" stream media to any or all zones.
    2. Central, easy to use controller for all systems.
    3. Should be able to accomplish this functionality without having to keep PC/Mac running.
Ques 1: I have considered Sonos option, but it can't do video content. So, I guess my options are Apple TV + 5 Airport Expresses. Is that correct? Will I be able to accomplish my goal with this setup? Anything I need to be aware of, e.g, network connectivity/slowdown issues, system reliability issues, ease-of-use etc.?
Ques 2: One of the major benefits of Sonos system is the ability to play different music in different zones. From what I understand, this is NOT possible with AppleTV + AirportExpress + iTunes setup. Is that correct?
What if I have iTunes running on 2 separate laptops. Can one laptop play it's own playlist via AirExp-1 and the other laptop play a different playlist via AirExp-2 & AirExp-3? Is this possible? If yes, then I guess this may "simulate" the zoning effect of Sonos (albeit thru 2 separate controllers; but it works for my needs).
Ques 3: I have a MobileMe account to keep my MBP and iPhone in sync. I have lot of Photo Albums in MobileMe Gallery and also in iPhoto on my MBP. How can this me viewed via AppleTV? Would I have to move my iPhoto from MBP to AppleTV HDD?
Ques 4: Currently my iTunes library resides on my MBP. Is there any benefit of putting it on AppleTV HDD?
Ques 5: Can AppleTV HDD be used as backup drive for Time Machine. Currently, I have no choice but to buy Apple Time Capsule to use as wireless backup drive for my MBP; I can't use my NAS for this purpose (From what I've read on forums, I think Apple removed this functionality).
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

    >and Verizon Fios w/ 50mg upload and 25 mg download.
Your internet connection is not relevant this is all runnig across your home network.
    >- I want to be able to backup all of my photos, movies and music
Time Machine on MacOS will will already take care of this for you.
    >- I want to store all of my movies on a separate devise that wont clog up my mac book pro
So put then do that.  You said you have two external drives. (As long as they both have network support)  Put the content on one of them and make the other one the back up.
    > (ideally I would like a wireless connection)
While technically possible not a great idea.  Streaming video over WiFi is usally problemattic and so are large scale data set backups.
    >- I want to be able to watch those stored movies through ATV (via itunes)
Only going to work when your Mac is on with iTunes running, but can be done.

  • Problem with hp photosmart

I  cannot get my macbook to recognise wireless hp photosmart

Me neither, with a HP photosmart C4280 plugged into my AirPort Express. It had worked for a long time, then wouldn't, then would, now won't again.
I've tried many things on this last go-round:
    a) updating AirPortExpress firmware (needed to be done anyway)
