Airtunes 2.0 Update

With the 2.0 update - Is it possible to stream to both the apple tv and another airtunes (airport express) at the same time. In other words can you stream the same song to multiple rooms at the same time?

Just to confirm. The answer to your specific question is yes. You turn on Airtunes in the ATV's setup (then you can leave it on, it doesn't interfere with anything else) and if you send music to it from iTunes, it will play it - provided you're not actually already using it to play something else of course, in which case iTunes will warn you.
So the ATV can be an Airtunes client, but NOT a server like iTunes itself and it will play quite happily along with any other ATV or AirPort Express. However, it is likely that you will notice the relative delays between them. How bad they are and how acceptable they are is down to your network and you.

Using airtunes on itunes update

Hi iv just updated to the latest version of itunes and am unable to see my airport express using airtunes which has been working fine and trouble free until i updated to the latest version of itunes, i would like to keep the current version as i am going to get ?tv when it is available in the uk any help would be welcome, thanks in advance.

I had the same problem. I was using iTunes 7.0.2 with two Airport Express devices and it worked fine when the Bonjour service was running at the same time.
After I upgraded to iTunes 7.1 I was unable to connect to my Airport Express devices unless I disabled\stopped the Bonjour service. :-/
While disabling the Bonjour service is a workaround for iTunes, it breaks other 3rd party apps that use the Bonjour service to discover and stream to the Airport Express devices. I have a WinAmp plugin that allows me to stream WinAmp to my Airport devices that doesn't work when the Bonjour service is turned off.
I hope Apple fixes this problem ASAP. I hope Apple didn't do this to intentionally to defeat 3rd party apps that figured out how to stream to an Airport Express.

Why did my airtunes fail after updating to iOS 5.0

I used to be able to play most anything from my iPad to either of my Airport Express units and the speakers atteched to them.
After iOS 5.0 update to my iPad 1, i am no longer able to do so.
The setup still works correctly with itunes on laptops in the house, and only fails with the iOS 5.0 updated unit.
Any helpful thoughts?

What happens if you try a hard reset of the iPod? To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

AirTunes stopped showing up in iTunes but fine on mac.

Hi,
Have done a search but can't find this problem.
We had a network with one PC, one mac, 1 x wireless router and 2 x airport express (for airtunes).
After updating iTunes on the PC (maybe a coincidence), iTunes can no longer find any speakers. They still show up on the mac.
When trying to play with the airtunes setting on the PC itunes crashes.
I have now added a new PC laptop to the network and that is experiencing the same problem.
I have been trouble shooting and tried taking the wireless router out of the equation but no joy.
Any ideas as what to try next?

Join existing network overwritting router settings

Hi there,
Trying to set up the express to run airtunes (only) and I know that I have to set the express up as a client of my existing wifi network by joining my existing network but in doing this (by following the setup wizard) the express is not actually joining the network but is becoming the router which is what I do not want.
I'm uk based have sky netgear router.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I suggest that you start over by holding in the reset button on the AirPort Express (AX) until the amber light blinks rapidly and then keep holding another few seconds before releasing the reset button.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express and open AirPort Utility to select the AX. If you are asked, you want to return the AX to factory default settings.
Then click Continue to follow the guided setup. On about the third page of setup instructions, you will be asked how you want to configure the AX. You want to choose the "Join a wireless network" option at this point.
The name of your wireless network created by your Netgear router should appear as a choice to "join", so select that network. Then you must enter the exact same type of Security settings that your Negear is using and password so the AX will "join" your wireless network correctly as a client.
Continue with the setup by enabling AirTunes, etc and Update the AX with the current configuration settings. As soon as you see a message that the settings have been stored on the AX, close AirPort Utility and disconnect the ethernet cable that you were using with the setup.
If you have entered the security and password information correctly, the AX will restart in 20-25 seconds and the light will turn green.
You can now move the AX to the location that you need and hookup headphones or a stereo to the device for AirTunes.

Can see Extreme, cannot see express

I have streamed music over 3 Airport Express's for a year now with a linksys router, recently i decided to get the Extreme. I am using a windows desktop and can see the Extreme, but I cannot see the expresses... I have re config'd them and everything. I CAN see all 4 devices on my macbook pro, but only the extreme on my windows desktop.... Why can I not see the expresses? I need to see them so I can stream my tunes! Please help.

0. Setup the Airport Express to join an existing wireless network, as usual. make sure that the Express restarts okay and that you can ping its IP. If iTunes is unable to connect to the Express, follow these three steps:

Apple, Step 2 above really looks like a bug -- please look into it and fix it. Step 1 is VERY ANNOYING, as the default behavior is not to enable ethernet clients, so once you've updated the Express, the only way to see it again is to either reset it or walk it over to your router and plug it into an ethernet cable.
This took far too much effort for something this simple, and required A LOT of fiddling and three lengthy and ultimately unhelpful calls to upper level tech support, none of whom had the solutions, and one of whom recommended outright unwise actions like permanently turning off my computer's firewall.
I'm keeping the Airport Express, but I agree with the blogger who wrote "My new Airport Extreme is retardéd and I’m keeping it" (http://tinyurl.com/cvawel).

Can't use Airtunes and iTunes Radio together since recent update.

I was using iTunes to listen to internet radio through my speakers connected by Airport Express.
The gear:
Signal starts with cable modem, ethernet connected to Belkin wireless Super G Router.
Then to my great love: Pismo PB with Airport card
There I'm running iTunes and using Airtunes to send signal to Airport Express which has speakers connected.
This worked until recently.
Now, I can either use the Express for Airtunes OR my wireless router to receive internet radio.

First try updating to iTunes 11.1.5.5, using an installer downloaded from the Apple website:

Airtunes Suddenly Stopped Working After Update

In the last two weeks i installed Leopard and the most recent iTunes update.
today first time i try to use Airtunes - which worked fine before. i open iTunes and see my Airport Express Airtunes in italics in the output choice box at lower righthand corner of window. close and reopen iTunes, and now that output choice box has totally disappeared!
using a 2005 Mac Mini with WLan wireless USB stick connecting to Airport Express. the wireless internet connection is still working ok.
what's going on?

I've had Airport issues in the past after updates. Even though the Internet connection was fine, I would have printing issues. Shutting down the Airport and modem and then restarting has seemed to fix the issue for me. You might try it.

10.4.7 Update and Airport Express w/ AirTunes

Maybe it's a coincidence but I can't get my Airport Express to stream iTunes after the recent Tiger update.
I have a Netgear Wireless router that I used to be able to hook into. I tried to reset the AE and use both Airport Setup Assistant and the Admin Utility, but neither find a base station.
Anyone else run into this or have any suggestions?

Hallelujah, I'm not alone! Same issues here and it sounds as though my experience corroborates that of others in this thread. I just upgraded to a Netgear DG834G ADSL router/WAP and I'm getting a weird issue when streaming from iTunes on the G4 Mini (OS X 10.4.7). After a hard reset of the AE and updating it with my known-good configuration, the AE basically disappears from the Mini's sight after an hour. Its name goes italic in the remote-speakers selection drop-down, and Airfoil can no longer see it either. However, my G4 iBook (10.3.9) has no such problem and can see and stream. Resetting the AE returns it to visibility as far as the G4 Mini is concerned. I'm about to test (it'll take another hour at least!) on the Intel Mini that sits next to the telly (again OS X 10.4.7) and will follow up shortly. iTunes is at 6.0.5 throughout. But it really does look to me, from my own experience and what I have read on this thread, as though 10.4.7 is basically broken for AirTunes for at least some types of Wireless Network...

Itunes 7.4.1 update has killed my iTunes store & airTunes

I'm a bit stumped by this one. Yesterday I followed the prompt to update to iTunes 7.4. This morning when I came back to my computer my airTunes speakers weren't connected (first thing I noticed) and then I realised that the iTunes store won't connect either. The error message I get upon trying to connect is:
*iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was refused.*
Now, I'm not stupid, so this to me sounds like a pretty obvious firewall issue. However the only firewall I have turned on is the standard Windows XP one and it has an exception for iTunes (and one for Bonjour). In fact I've ever tried turning that firewall off completely and it makes no difference. The error message comes up instantaneously, so it seems as if iTunes isn't even trying to connect to anything.
After noticing that iTunes 7.4.1 had been sneaked out overnight I wondered whether this was a known issue with 7.4.0, and updated. Sadly, it was to no avail.
Any ideas?

actually, scratch that - I fixed it.
Apparently ZoneAlarmPro was running hidden.

Airtunes streaming no longer works since last update

I have been using my Airport Express to straem Airtunes to my speakers for over a year. Immediately following my last software update, it no longer works. In iTunes, I can see the speakers, it just won't let me check them for use. The Express unit seems to be working properly and I have updated the firmware on it and the Extreme as well. Has anyone seen this behavior? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Marcello, I am having the same problem. When following the advice of many in the community to start iTunes in 32-bit mode, I get the following error after I have done so:
I am running 10.9.2 on a mac mini.
I am hoping this will be fixed or at least a solid answer could be given that iTunes will no longer support certain types of media going foward.

Updated to itunes 9: now Airtunes won't connect,

I unfortunately do not recall the last version of itunes I had.... it wasn't very old though.
The only reason I updated to 9 last night was the itunes store forced me to in order to get a new episode. Anyways...
after the update, upon starting iTunes, i get this dialogue:
"The software required for communication with this ipod is not installed correctly...."
Then it asks me if I want it to repair. I say yes and it supposedly repairs it. If I restart itunes, it will say this error every single time.
I also cannot connect to my Airpor Express as a speaker output. it is listed, and when I select it, it brings up the 'connecting' dialogue which goes on FOREVER until I cancel it. ***?!?
I've uninstalled itunes, apple application support AND apple mobile device support and reinstalled itunes. I've unplugged the airport express; re-configured it using the Airport utility, updated the firmware and still I have both of these problems after all this.
WHY OH WHY did itunes make my update to download new store episodes...
Can anybody help me diagnose this?

Actually it's quite helpful... the more people who confirm there is an issue the better... maybe apple will take it more seriously.
I called apple support yesterday and they tried to pin the issue on anything/everything related to my setup, didn't even give consideration to the fact there might be an itunes 9 bug. To be fair they are probably just going through all the steps first....
They suggested I disable the wireless on my Linksys WT45G since I'm only using it for wired connections, which I did to no avail. My setup goes ATT DSL modem > Linksys WT45G (PC wired to this) > Airport Extreme Base > Airport Express, only the Express is wireless (using the 3 ports on the extreme for other stuff).
They asked me to try plugging the extreme and airport in a different room as if this is somehow wireless interference. Nevermind the fact I'm currently on my wife's laptop with 8.2.1 and I can connect to the Airport Express with absolutely no problem.
Going to call them back and be adamant that this is in no way an issue with my setup, its an issue with itunes 9!
Out of curiosity, is anybody having this issue connecting their Express with ethernet instead of wireless? That's about the only thing I haven't tried yet but will today... but like I said I'm already using all 3 wired ports on the extreme.

I recently updated my Apple TV. I used to be able to choose it as my Speakers for Airtunes and automatically music would play off of my Apple TV. Now, I have to choose Apple TV, then choose another source then Apple TV again in order for music to play.

I am experiencing the exact same thing. It all used to *just* work.
This workaround you describe of deselecting the remote speaker, and then selecting it again is what I have to do every morning to listen to the news.
This started when I did the last update. Let me know if you find a solution.

Airtunes stopped working after updating to itunes 12.0.1

After updating to 12.0.1.26 from 11.something on a windows 8.1 Vaio Pro pc, I only get the error message "an error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device (embarrassing name)The network connection failed." when trying to play music on an old Airport device. The internet connection is fine on the pc, os and drivers are up to date, and airport continues to work perfectly in my ipod touch, which sadly has become my new home stereo until Apple fixes this. Please please do fix, we really depend on streaming music/podcasts/internet radio at our house.

The latest version of itunes (12.1.0.71) completely remedied the problem! Thanks for listening.
