AirTunes feature "disapeared"!

I have an AirPort Express base station that is about a year old and the airtunes feature isn't working anymore. When i go to the airport admin utility the music tab also disapeared. I already tried a hard reset but it did not solve the problem. Everything else work just fine exept that the green light does not light up anymore (but the base still works exept for the airtunes feature).

Airtunes allows you to stream audio content over an AirPort WiFi network. If you look at the bottom of your iTunes window (if AirPort is enabled) you will see a little speaker icon next to the word "Computer". This is a pull down menu that lets you select any attached AirPort Express base stations (and now multiple base stations). You can connect a standard mini-Phono (1/8" stereo) plug to the Express base stations and then connect this to powered speakers or to an input on a stereo (or anything else that accepts a Line In). THen you can play your iTunes audiu content not only on the computer the library is on, but also on 1 or more of the devices connected to 1 or more Express Base Stations.
The latest addition is that you can now select the tv as one of the output locations. What I am waiting to try is if I can stream 5.1 content to the tv and play that over my Theater receiver - that would be cool.
Let me know if you need more explicit instructions.

  • What extra features can be had with the airport with my iPad? I do not have a Mac computer so I update on my friends, and store imfo on an external hard drive when needed.

I use my iPad for everything, if I had airport what more fantastic things could I do with my iPad? I have not invested in a printer, I watch Netflix , I have the camera adapters, use the camera daily. Video storage and Netflix streaming are two areas I need ideas for.

You could download airport utility for ios 5 on your ipade. Like this you can update your airport directly from your ipad and you don't need a mac or pc.
If your airport is an airport express you can use the airtunes feature.

  • Can't play to AirTunes and local speakers at same time

I've just taken delivery of an AirPort Express purely to use the AirTunes feature. Setup was a doddle.
My MacBook Pro running OSX can route audio to AirTunes, or local speakers, or both at the same time - with no issues.
My XP PC, however, can route audio to the AirPort OR play locally, but fails when trying to select both sets of speakers at the same time with error -3256.
I'm using iTunes 7.0.2.16 on the PC. Having trawled other articles there's reports of a similar issue on OSX that's UDP/firewall related, so I've tried disabling the firewall on XP but this doesn't help. The PC is connected to the network via ethernet (into wireless access point).
I can't find any other method to raise the issue directly with Apple. I'd be interested to see if I'm the only one experiencing this issue or if it's a genuine bug.

  • WLAN disconnect after 20 minutes of streaming with AirTunes

    Hi,
I’m using the AirTunes-Feature to stream my music form my computer to my amplifier. I’m working with a Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpad T61 with Windows XP SP2.
The streaming works well for about 20 minutes. After that my WLAN network-interface disconnects form the WLAN. I have to use the windows repair function to get iz restarted.
I’ve already disabled all energy-saving settings, updated the WLAN driver and disabled the firewall but the problem still remains. Maybe this problem isn’t really related to iTunes, but perhaps someone in this forum has an idea anyway...
Thanks a lot and best regards from Hamburg,
    Dirk

If it's every 20 minutes, that sounds like some kind of timer setting.
So look for any kind of setting that is 20 minutes?

  • Solved: AirPort Express and AirTunes Audio Distortion Connected to a Stereo

*The problem*: Terrible sound distortion while using AirPort Express AirTunes features. Even when nothing was plugged in, there would be a buzzing noise.
*The setup*: AirPort Express connected via 3.5mm stereo jack to a pair of computer stereo speakers. Note: This post does not apply to you if you are using an optical Toslink between the AirPort Express and your speakers. iTunes installed on a Mac. AirTunes setup to allow music to stream wirelessly to AirPort Express and speakers.
*The solution*: The AirPort Express needs to be grounded. The included AC tip is only two prong. In the US, the third prong (round) is used for grounding.
Therefore you just need to attach the three prong AC tip. This is not included with the AirPort Express. What you need is the Apple Power Extension Cord which has a 3 prong tip.
    Example:
    http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Extension-Apple-PowerBook-Notebook/dp/B002V4XKRS
This is the same extension cord that comes with most Apple notebooks.
    Hope this helps!

    Bob,
This is really simple so no instructions are necessary.
Plug in the new Express when you get it and have it "Join the existing network"...
Give the iTunes Music section a name like "Front Room Stereo" and that's it...
Plug the stereo into the Express and select it in iTunes for playing music.

  • Airtunes works, internet doesn't?

I recently moved my airport from one cable connection in my house to another. the internet was working fine before i moved it. i moved it closer to my stereo in order to use the airtunes feature, which is working beautifully with a steady green status light on the airport. i know that the internet signal is good because i've connected via the ethernet wire that connects the modem to the airport. i've attempted resetting the airport, unplugging the modem and the airport and replugging them in various sequences and lengths of time. i've also used airport setup assistance, all to no avail. i would very much appreciate any assistance with this matter.
    c h ad

Agreed - seems impossible. I still think the underlying problem is most likely a misconfigured Airport Express or a connection to the ISP that has not been properly reset. But when all other possibilities have been exhausted, and since this Airport Express was previously working perfectly with the same modem in the same house...
    In your situation:
Since you have been assigned a static IP address (and presumably you have also been supplied with the required subnet mask, router/gateway IP address, and domain name server IP address(es)) - you need to run the Airport Admin Utility, select your Express, click Configure, click the Internet tab, select to "connect using ethernet" and "configure manually", then enter all these parameters into the fields provided, then update settings to the Airport Express. As for your Macs, they should all still be configured to obtain an IP address automatically using DHCP in System Preferences->Network->Show Airport->TCP/IP tab.

  • AirTunes just stopped working, cant fix.

So I have an AX b/g that Ive had for a little while. I have always used the Airtunes feature and it has (mostly) worked fine. I occasionally had an error but restarting itunes always fixed it. As of yesterday I go to play music and it says that my airport express doesnt exist. When I open airport utility it doesnt find any apple wireless devices, and the only way I can configure it is to select 'Config other'. It connects to the internet just fine but airport utility still wont find it and itunes wont give me the option to select remote speakers anymore (yes, it is checked in the settings). I have tried downgrading the AX firmware and older versions of airport utility but it does the same thing as the updated software. Any ideas?

Ah ha! I fixed it. It turns out that my firewall setting was set to only allow certain connections. iTunes WAS included but when I selected the 'allow all incoming connections' radio button it worked like a charm.

  • AirPort Express - extend network and/or AirTunes - one or both ?

I would like use my second AE to extend my existing AE network AND wire it to my stereo to use the AirTunes feature. No trouble setting it up for AirTunes but can't seen to get it to extend the network. Any tips about how I can get both features to perform as advertised?

If you need more wireless coverage, you can use the WDS configuration method for a "mix" of older "b/g" and newer "n" devices.
The big downsides here are that WDS operates only at "g" wireless, so you lose any faster "n" capability on the network...and...the bandwidth of the entire network will be cut in half. So, in effect you will have a bit more wireless coverage, but it will be a "g" wireless network running at half speed.
I don't recommend this, but if you want to try, post back for more details.

  • * airtunes with a computer to computer network

I have a iMac with an Airport Extreme card. The iMac has an internet connection thru a cable modem directly connected. There is no base station involved.
I purchased an Airport Express to connect to powered speakers - wanting to use the airtunes feature. I had to create a new network to do this. It works.
The problem is I cannot share the internet from my iMac with the other household computers and play music thru the speakers at the same time. I have to turn "internet sharing" off to connect to the Airport Express network.
I am hoping it is technically possbible to share the internet from my iMac, and play music thr the airport express at the same time - but don't see how to do it. Can anyone help me?? Thanks in advance!!

    Thanks!
So let me ask my original question one more time (and
I think this is the correct wording...). Is it
POSSIBLE to connect an AX that is to be used for
airtunes (in another room) to an existing wireless
network (if that network is "computer to computer"
    shared internet access)??
If this is a computer to computer network, an ad hoc network between two computers than the answer is no.
If this is a Mac sharing its internet connection via Airport (acting as a software base station) then the answer is probably yes, but you may not be able to use encryption.

  • AirTunes sound constantly cuts out on Laptop

Both me and my roommate play our iTunes through the single house stereo via AirTunes, me on my iMac and her on her MacBook. I never have problems with my playback, but half the time she uses it the sound will cut out constantly. There will be a few seconds of sound, then a few seconds of silence, on and on.
    It's very annoying.
Neither of us experiences any problems or cutting out with using the internet at all, even while this AirTunes problem is happening.
We've tried setting the iTunes streaming buffer size to large. I've lowered the security on the Express to WPA only, increased the multicast rate to 11 and enabled interference robustness. We've also tried closing all other apps on her machine and installing more RAM. none of which has helped the problem.
    She's using a MacBook2,1 and OSX 10.4.11
Any help would be much appreciated as this is driving us both mad.

    Thanks for the welcome!
And for the info. At first i thought this might be a good lead, since for the first time in the months since i bought the Express my iMac iTunes started having this problem as well (though this is probably just because i hardly use the AirTunes feature). But lowering the multicast rate doesn't seem to have any affect on the issue either. So i've effectively ruled out the multicast rate as any sort of cause/solution to the problem.
I've tried watching the network activity monitor when this is occurring, but see no correlation between the network activity and the periods of silence from the AirTunes.
The wiring doesn't seem to be a problem either, as i can hook up either computer to the jack going into the express and it plays just fine.
Maybe i just have a dud Express unit?

  • Airtunes sound quality

I have an iTunes library in my iMac with all the music files ripped from my CDs in Apple Lossless. The iMac is connected to an Airport Extreme as my wireless router and I have 2 Airport Express as repeters. In the iMac I have the Squeezeserver running.
In one of my HiFi systems I have one of the Airport Express connected via Ethernet cable to a Squeezebox. The digital coax output of the Squeezebox is going to a Genesis TimeLens De-Jitter and from there to my PS Audio PerfectWave DAC. The output of the DAC is feeding my Woo Audio tube headphones amplifier.
Last night I connected the digital Toslink output of the Airport Express to the Genesis TimeLens to then follow the same sound chain as above.
I compared the sound of the exact same song (file in iTunes) one from the Squeezebox and the other from Airtunes. To my surprise they sounded different. The sound using the Squeezebox chain was significant better. More focus, better bass, more realistic and with better texture. The sound using AirTunes was lean and difussed with a huge and un-realistic soundstage.
I don't undrestand if I am using the same source file and the same electronics from the Airport Extreme on why it is so different. I tried the equalizer route with minimal success.
Is iTunes or AirTunes doing something in the processing? I would liekto eliminate the Squeezebox solution but not at the cost of quality of the sound.

I am not a big fan of using the AirTunes feature of iTunes because it is not Applescriptable and because you can only output to one stream at a time. The sound quality is quite good as far as I can tell. The only time it suffered is when I was using iTunes on my laptop that was playing from the shared music on my server. The stream would get choppy and sometimes choke, but it is working better after changing my wireless router channel to the other end of the spectrum.
It is really nice that it outputs to optical, preserving the digital signal and eliminating the need for expensive shielded cables to reduce noise from all the other wires behind my stereo.
If I were to do it over, I would have saved the money that I spent on airPort Express to use on my irTrans project.

  • Requesting Airtunes Songs from another computer

Me and my friend are going to be using the Airtunes feature of the Airport Express for a party. Not many of the people attending have iPhones or iPod touches. Is there a program that can be run on other phones that can request songs? If not, is there a way to request songs from another mac or computer on the network?

Hello njndirish. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If not, is there a way to request songs from another mac or computer on the network?
Yes. You can share items in your iTunes library with up to five other computers on your local network. While your computer is on and iTunes is open, others in your network can play your shared items, but shared items can’t be imported into others’ libraries.
If you want to import items from other iTunes libraries on other computers in your home, you can turn on Home Sharing. You can use Home Sharing with up to five computers. To use Home Sharing, you must have an iTunes Store account.
Since this is not really an AirPort networking issue, I suggest that you repost your questions in the iTunes Discussions area to get more relevant responses.

  • ITunes Library File Size Limit?

I've been struggling to get my AppleTV to work as advertised since I bought it on the day it was originally released. I'm a big music fan and wanted to use it mostly as a music device. My iTunes library is huge. I have my entire CD collection ripped in lossless, as well as AAC for my iPod. I also have lots of other music, some DTS audio files, etc... and very detailed organization.
At any rate, I could always get the AppleTV to work if I just set it up to sync and play the files locally, but never to properly stream in a manner that's useable. And any syncing would take FOREVER. I'm on an N network, and I was getting speeds around 100KB/second. And then after it finally would get setup, I would often get pauses up to a minute where the AppleTV would freeze between menus while "thinking". It would take me 5 minutes just to navigate to a song and start playing it.
I tried all sorts of troubleshooting. Test libraries always worked fine. I've rebuilt my iTunes library from scratch, suspecting a corrupt library file, even though there was no other evidence to support this theory. No dice.
I'm finally giving up, and deciding that AppleTV has a limit to how large an iTunes library file it can handle. My iTunes library file is 160MB. Just the library file. You figure it's only got 256MB of RAM, and it's no wonder it can't handle it. I'm not sure how large the AppleTV OS is, but I suspect with a library file that large that the ATV has to do lots of going back to the HD to retrieve information it just doesn't have enough room for in RAM.
So my new strategy is to set up a secondary iTunes library just for my AppleTV that contains just music I want to sync, and any video I may want to stream. If I want to stream video, I'll launch this new library. If I want to listen to music without my computer on, the AppleTV will have a selection on it from this new library. If I want to stream my huge library, well, now I can use my iPhone as a remote to control my large iTunes library, and use the AppleTV with airtunes feature. And this works wonderfully, 100% responsive with no "waiting".
At any rate, I'm very disappointed that I couldn't get the AppleTV to work as advertised. I wish Apple would specify that there's a limit to how large a library it can handle. I've been screwing around with this for a long time and am essentially giving up, although the iPhone remote / airtunes solution works well for me.
Maybe down the road they'll come out with a new hardware revision with more RAM that can handle things better.

Well, I was hoping I could send you a private message, Greg Neil, because I don't know if you'll ever see this message. Regardless, your iTunes library is NOT the problem no matter what others have told you. 7000 files it's child's play. My iTunes library currently has 14,639 music files in it and 129 Movies ripped at 3000kbps. The library size is NOT the problem. If your network is slow then that will be what is hurting you. The second fastest behind 'n' (i always forget this bit of trivia) should be fast enough for streaming music and most movies. I know that because I've done it. Having said that, go out and buy a bit of ethernet cable and hook it directly into your machine and see if you can stream that way. If you can't then you need to take back your aTV because, in that case, it's the problem. If your network is of adequate speed per what I and the previous poster have mentioned and it still won't stream at all wirelessly then TAKE IT BACK. Mine has streamed fine in the past however, I eventually just hardwired it via ethernet to prevent any drops ever. Hope this helps. I just wanted you to know that going to that amount of trouble to make it work should not have been necessary, and btw, aTV running all your favorite music to your home stereo is worth the price of the device itself. You shouldn't have to suffer.
    All the best,
    A fellow music lover

  • Best way to hook up Airport Express with a current Airport Extreme network

I currently have an Airport Extreme (7.2 firmware, N version, but right now running mixed mode because all my clients are G, and using WPA/WPA2), and I am thinking about getting an Express to use it to share a printer and the Airtunes feature.
My Extreme is on the top floor of a 3 floor house, and has good coverage over all the house. So I don't necessarily need the Express to extend the range on the bottom, but if it helps get a stronger signal, then why not. My stereo and printer will be on the bottom floor as well.
There seems to be several ways to add the Express to the existing network, but I don't which one is the most appropriate or what will work the best.
    1) Do I use a WDS network?
    2) Do I extend the network?
    3) Or setup up the Express as just a wireless client for Airtunes/printer sharing?
    4) Can I put a USB hub on the Express and share a printer and a hard disk? (I would do this on my extreme base station, but its in a location that I can't attach it to a printer or hard disk)
    Thanks for any help.

would this approach work if the extreme were in "n" mode and all you wanted to do was set up the express for air tunes? would "b" or "g" machines be able to "see" the air tunes "station?
Since the AX is an 802.11g device you would need to run the AEBS in an 802.11g compatible mode for the AX to wirelessly connect. Therefore your 802.11b/g clients could join the AEBS's wireless network. The AX service would be available to any device connected to the network.
if one had a dual band network (an extreme in "n" and an older snow base station for "b" and "g" connectivity), how would this affect the use of an express for air tunes?
In a dual-band network one of the base stations is acting as a bridge. Therefore every device connected is on the same subnet and able to use the services of the AX. This is regardless to which base station they are connected or if they are connected wirelessly or via Ethernet.
