AirTunes interruption

Problem: Interruption of AirTunes stream from one computer not another.
I have an iMac G5 set up right next to my main base station (Extreme), a relay AX base station and a remote AX base station tied to the relay and another AX connected to the stereo. I have a G4 about 60 ft away from the G5 and 10 feet below it on another floor. The G4 is next to the AX remote (tied to the relay). Both the G4 & G5 have full bar signal strength in Internet Connect.
The iMac G5 plays (nearly) un-interrupted music via AirTunes and has the fastest internet response.
The G4 has more sluggish internet response and continually interrupted Airtunes streaming (every 10-15 sec.).
I have removed my one 2.4GHz phone from operation. I've unplugged the microwave, re-positioned the base stations to get the strongest signals in Internet Connect but cannot improve the AirTunes performance from the G4.
I suspect I am getting some interference from a neighbor's wireless network (several show up from time to time) or 2.4GHz device near the end of the house with the G4.
Anything I might have missed in my set up? If not, and it is interference is there any way to actually pinpoint the source? I don't really want to canvas the neighborhood asking who has 2.4GHz phones.
Any help will be appreciated.
PBG4, iMac G4 & G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have more information. Due to some unexpected construction (don't ask) I had to temporarily move the G4 into the same room as the G5 and it performs the same as the G5 (much better than the other location).
I then took your advice and downloaded AirTrafficControl and walked around the inside of the house then the outside. I can connect to the various AE devices and watch the various signal strengths vary at 54 Mbps. I also noticed that I can detect three other people's networks from inside the house with the strongest signals coming from the side of the house I want the G4 to be located (where I was having the trouble).
Walking around the outside of the house and up and down the immediate vicinity, I found three more networks!
In addition, I noticed a recent deterioration in the G5 signal strength even though the Airport Extreme base station is right next to the G5 on the desk. So far this has been stabilized after re-starting and zapping the PRAM.
I stll think that my G4 streaming problem is due to interference, presumably from the other networks. The deteriorating G5 network reception fixed by zapping the PRAM (not fixed by repairing permissions) is a mystery to me.
Perhaps I need to get together with all the other network owners (neighbors) so we can assign ourselves different channels but I sure would like to fix this problem internally if possible.
Any further guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  • AirTunes Interrupted

I have my MacBook connected to an Airport Extreme and Airtunes connected to my stereo. When I play music through iTunes to the remote speakers, everything works fine for a while and then the sound simply cuts off. If I check iTunes, the track is no longer progressing, as if iTunes disconnected. I don't have this problem, though, if I use the computer speakers. Only if I am using the remote speakers. Anyone else have this problem and been able to resolve it?

Try connecting to "multiple speakers" in the panel at the bottom right of iTunes.
This might help, but there are loads of other tricks that you can employ, changing the channel from say 10 to 1 as you may be getting interference from a neighbours phone/baby monitor etc.
Make the system more "robust" in the preferences - this reduces the range but make the "hook" stronger.
Have a Google around and see what you find, try the first one though it might make your problem go away.
    Goodluck.

  • Can't get AirTunes to work w/out interruptions

    Hi,
I hope somebody can help me before I pull out more hair.
I have a PC running XP service pack 2, a cable modem and a D-Link wireless router. Our stereo, where Airport Express is attached is on the other side of the house. After reading numerous posts on this message site, I see that many people have experienced drops while using AirTunes. Perhaps the problem was due to the distance between the wireless router and Airport Express.
Being always interested in a Mac, I decided to purchase an iBook (2 weeks ago). I figured I could move my iTunes library to my new notebook, and set up the Airport Express from my laptop. Then, I could set the laptop closer to the sterio (same room) and stream music, and have no drops. Well, this is not happening.
I set up AirPort Express to connect as a client. Does this mean that the music stream flows as such:
    laptop->wireless router->Airport Express
    or..
    laptop->Airport Express
Does anyone think I can get fewer drops if I set up a separate network? I realize I could not browse the internet while also streaming music. If so, where is there documentation on how to do this?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks - Ray

The music stream follows the path of Laptop -> wireless router -> Airport Express.
You might get fewer drops in the music stream by setting up a separate wireless network. To do this, just run the Airport Setup Assistant and use its guidance to configure the Airport Express as a new Base Station rather than as a client. Downside to doing this - you won't be able to access the internet and stream iTunes at the same time, and you will have two separate wireless networks that you must manually switch between depending on whether you want internet access or iTunes streaming.

  • Second iMac (G4) interrupts Airtunes from iMac G5

I recently added an iMac G4 (800MHz/256Mb/Airport Card/10.4.6) to my existing Airport network (AEBS and iMacG5 1.8MHz/2GB Ram w/Airport Extreme Card/10.4.6) and now my Airtunes streams from the G5 to my stereo (Airport Express) frequently drop out. I'm using WEP. At this point the only way I can stop the dropping is to turn off all the programs on the G4 and in some cases the airport too. Not good. I've not yet tried changing to WPA. Anyway, all worked perfectly before I added the second iMac computer. Periodically I use an iBook G4 1.2GHz/Airpoort Extreme on the network with the G5 and never have had these problems. Why is the iMac G4 messing with my mojo?

I changed my AEBS channel to "Automatic" from channel 3 and it has helped with airtunes streams of iTunes music on the hard drive, although I did have issues withdrop outs while streaming iTunes Radio.
Could it have been as simple as that?
    I shall advise.

  • Why won't AirTunes stream without randomly dropping the connection?

Here's the network setup I have in place: In our home office, I have 2 iMacs running 10.5.6 connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme base station. (They are also connected via AirPort, and everything works as expected if the ethernet cables are unplugged.) In my living room, I have an AirPort Express which is used primarily for my XBOX 360. The X360 is plugged into the ethernet port of the Airport Express. There is an audio out cable connected to the AirPort Express that runs to my amplifier. The X360 is connected to my amplifier via its own audio out cable. The AirPort network is configured as a WDS network, and both the Base Station and the Express are on software version 7.4.1
Here's the first mystery: If I stream music from either iMac to the AirPort Express, the audio stream will drop at random intervals, while the music continues to play on the iMac. The stream will eventually restart, but the recovery time varies from seconds to minutes with no discernible pattern. Does anyone know why this happens? During the stream drops I have no problem controlling the iMac via Remote on my iPod Touch, which suggests there's nothing wrong with the overall AirPort network. The physical connection from the Express to the amplifier seems fine, and I've tested the cable with other equipment.
Here's the second mystery: I have Connect360 installed on my iMac, so the XBOX can access my iTunes library. I can stream any of my iTunes playlists through the XBOX without the stream ever dropping out. How does the AirPort Express send a signal without interruption to my amplifier via the XBOX when it can't do the same thing via iTunes/AirTunes?
I don't have any problems with the AirPort network generally, and the Express works beautifully with my XBOX for online gaming, so I am puzzled by the signal dropouts that occur only when I stream music via AirTunes to the Express.
The XBOX interface is crummy for managing music when company is around for dinner since it requires the TV, but the elegance of being able to unobtrusively manage iTunes via AirPort and the iPod Touch is completely undone by background music that cuts in and out. I've been thinking about getting an Apple TV, but since it would be using AirTunes as well, I'm not convinced the situation would be any better.
Is AirTunes dysfunctional, or is there something that I'm doing wrong? I've combed through the Apple discussion forums and it's clear that many, many people are having similar problems with AirTunes, but I haven't yet come across any solutions that decisively fix the issue. We all seem to have had many experiences of thinking we've finally solved the problem, only to find after 15 or 20 minutes of smooth playback the stream has dropped again.
Any help or advice is welcome, there simply has to be an Apple solution of some sort if third party software using the same Apple network equipment can provide an uninterrupted stream from iTunes.

@ Ralph. No. connections are fine. As indicated my iPad works seamlessly. And I've tried two 5's! Both do the same. I HATE not having the capacity to 'Listen Live' to public radio!

  • HT202663 AirTunes cuts out at the same time every hour for about 20 seconds

Since converting my iMac from Lion to Mavericks a week ago, my Airtunes network dies at exactly the same time ... 51 mintes and 35 seconds every hour after the hour. It stays down for 20 seconds then picks up again without any intervention required. (iTunes itself does not stall).
My wifi network set up worked reliably for about three years before upgrading to Mavericks, streaming music from iTunes on my iMac to two AP Expresses and one AppleTV. I have an Actiontec router provided by Verizon/FiOS. The iMac is connected to the router via Ethernet.
The apparently precisely timed interruption problem manifested itself immediately after installing Mavericks.
Anybody else have anything like this?

I fixed the problem. For anyone interested I disabled the IGMP service in the Actiontec router.

  • Experiencing lags when using AirTunes

    Hey all
I have a Lenovo Notebook and a Fujtsu computer, both running with Windows XP. I am running a WiFi-network with a TP-Link Router connected to a Motorola Modem (some crap my ISP gave me). There is an AirPort Express connected to this WiFi in my living room (approx. 12meters away from my router), to which my TV is plugged with an audio cable.
So, with this installation I am streaming music from my notebook (connected via WiFi) to the AirPort with iTunes (AirTunes). From time to time, I am experiencing lags or delays: for 1 or 2 minutes, the music interrupts every 5 or 10 seconds and stops for a couple of seconds. This is extremely annoying.
I have found an archived topic (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9587938) in which it was told that it's an issue appearing only since iTunes 8 and that a future update might help. Well, today theres iTunes 9 running on my PCs and the problem seems to exist, still.
Does anybody have a solution for that or is it still caused by the software?
I have been thinking of monitoring the network usage - maybe there is some sort of peak or overload during the lags.
And yes, as soon as I have finished my studies I will get me an Apple computer and an AirPort extreme. But I need to have a salary for that
    best regards from Switzerland
    Ivo

I was just listening to music with my airtunes speaker and after approx 15 minutes it started to have those interruptions again. So I decided to look for a monitoring solution (after a tool offered by microsoft didn't satisfy my needs). I now found Network Activity Diagram - which is great. I can now monitor the traffic to the AirPort graphically. I will do that the next time I'll be listening to music and tell you about my observations.

  • Aiport Express interruption!

    Hi Guys,
So I'm using my Airport Express with iTunes and have it connected to my wireless network and my speakers. The problem I'm having is that while my music is steaming to my speakers there constant cutting in and out of playback. There is obvious interruption. I have tried using interfering robustness and it doesn't seam to help.
    Any suggestions guys?
    Thanks!

Read what Apple has to say on this topic at AirTunes audio stream drops or cuts out.
This is a frequently reported problem in this discussion forum. The advice provided by Apple in the article I referred to above is about as good as it gets - and even with this advice there are some people who never seem to be able to get rid of this problem.

  • Airtunes freezes

While Airtunes is running it frequently (every 10 -15 mins) hangs and the song playing is interupted. The song playing on iTunes also hangs, but the programme itself hasn't crashed. After clicking few songs and waiting a bit Airtune and iTunes starts up again. Any thoughts why?

I've been struggling with this for six months or so. Lately, it has gotten to the point where it will stop altogether. When that happens, I look at a popular widget called AirTrafficControl. It shows that the signal strength has not degraded. However, the network speed in the upper right corner has dropped to 1 Mbps. When AirTunes is working normally this is anywhere from 24 Mbps to 54 Mbps (the maximum wireless speed). I just recently discovered a way to get it working again. YMMV.
I walk over to the AirPort Express. I pull out the audio connector and put it back in again. Then everything starts working again.
My theory is that interference causes the network speed to drop temporarily, which causes AirTunes to stutter and ultimately stop. I think the radio interference has gradually gotten worse in this apartment building. Over the last, six months, I've seen the number of wireless networks go from just me to four. I also got a LogiTech surround sound system that uses the same wireless technology to send signals to the rear speakers. I don't know if my neighbors use cordless phones, but they use the same channels, too.
I know that the AE can tell if the audio connector is in or not. I suspect that pulling it out and putting back in causes something to re-initialize. I also know that AirTunes, in particular, is a little wonky about network interruptions. Any time my Powerbook goes to sleep, my AirTunes goes out and I have to reselect my speakers in iTunes. I think there is ample justification for believing that this procedure does actually do something. And it seems to solve my problem...until it occurs again.
Having said that, I've had other workarounds that seemed to work for awhile and then didn't.
BTW, I use an optical audio cable to connect my AE to my stereo. It might matter if you use RCA phono connections, but I doubt it.

  • Airtunes glitches and pitch problems

Hey. This is weird. Airtunes has always streamed Internet radio flawlessly to our living room stereo, but since doing the latest updates (iTunes 7.6.2, Quicktime 7.4.5, etc) I'm getting weird issues. There's almost constant glitches and interruptions, and in a couple of cases, actual pitch problems in the music, as if there was a sampling rate problem. The music actually jumps up in pitch. How is that possible?
What's going on? This doesn't happen with tunes loaded into iTunes -- just Internet radio. Never had any problem with that before.

Sorry, not offering a solution - having the same problem. CDs play fine. iTunes music plays fine. Streaming audio has suddenly gotten erratic and unlistneable.
I think I read something about chaning the channel of the airport base station and express but I can't find it agian.
    any one have a suggestion?

  • Airport Express: Music's playing with interruptions

    Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble trying to hear music via AirTunes on my Airport Express. Everything's fine but the speaker or headphone connected to the Airport Express-Station is very laggy, so music is not playing continously, having interruptions, like having lots of data on the stream or so. Not sure how I can get it fixed...
    janosch

Might it be possible that you may have some form of WiFi interference in the area? (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108065)
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like AirPort Client Monitor (a part of AirPort Management Tools), MacStumbler, or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference...and either, eliminate them or attempt to significantly reduce them.

  • IPhone Voice Memos Interrupted By Incoming Calls

I notice that every time I use my Voice Memos software on the 3G(s), if an call comes in, the Voice Memo stops recording and I won't know it till I look at the phone later. Is there ANY way to stop that for that not to happen and you can have perhaps the calls go directly into voice mail so that the Voice Memo feature doesn't get interrupted? It's useless to me otherwise.
    Thanks for anyone's input!

The voice recorder application - just like every other iPhone application, native or 3rd party - will shut down when you receive a phone call. The iPhone operates under the assumption that the device is first and foremost a telephone.
As far as work arounds go, you can always put the phone in airplane mode when you need to use the voice recorder app uninterrupted. This will send all incoming calls directly to voicemail.

  • How to allow multiple users login to a MAC PRO without interruption?

I have a mac pro, which runs Yosemite, (2013 module) to be used as a server. However, I have difficult to let multiple users to use the mac simultaneously.
    Objective:
One person uses the mac directly on his desktop, while the others to login remotely though VNC from PC (win 7/Linux).
The users have their own workspace, and they will not interrupt each other.
    What I tried:
I created two mange accounts on the MAC.
Account 1 was used to directly login on the mac desktop.
Account 2 was used to login to the mac from a PC though VNC. (I also tried this from a Centos workstation with the Tiger VNC viewer)
    Problem:
When account 2 is login, the location monitor will automatically change to that account as well. Both accounts shared exactly the same screen, mouse & keyboard actions. It is impossible to let multiple users to use the MAC pro simultaneously without interruptions.
If I use "hdiutil attach" to mount a dmg file though SSH with account 2, the folder will automatically show in the local desktop login with account 1.
    Question:
I read something about the "Per-user screen sharing". It says, "You can remotely log into a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login." Is it possible to do this from a PC or Linux client?
If the problem is simply due to the poor functionality of the build-in VNC service in Yosemite, I appreciate your help to suggest some other decent VNC server for Yosemite. I know the Vine Server (OSXvnc), but I failed to install it on the mac because it is incompatible with the Yosemite.
Does the SSH is supposed to work in this way in OSX? I mean the local account can see the folder mounted by another account though SSH.
If any specific version of Yosemite is required to allow multiple users to access a mac simultaneously? Just as the win 7 professional allow only one user to login in at each time. But with the remote desktop server of windows, multiple users are able to use the same computer at the same time without any problem.
If you familiar with any of the above questions, please help. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.
I know the best way to get the solution is to direct call the apple support. However, it is really not easy to call them. Because it always results with long waiting time and then the people pick up the phone will transfer my call to an expert who will make me to describe the problem again.
Since I'm not interested in the technique details of all the problems, it is also grateful if you would provide a direct instruction to let me setup the computer for the purpose.
Thanks you very much for your kindly help.

I cannot help with the screen sharing, although I have just tried it with a RealVNC client on an iPad and it seemed to work OK.
However on the disk showing on all users desk tops have you unchecked the "ignore ownership on this volume" check box? You can check the drives permissions with CMD i command.

  • The installation was interrupted message after iTunes upgrade

I would appreciate help with my problem. I'd like to use iTunes but it doesn't work.
Description of the problem: I was happily using iTunes for more than a year. I received a notice that a new version was available and I upgraded. When the installation was complete I received the following message:
"The installation was interrupted before iTunes could be completely installed."
iTunes is not listed in the Programs menu and there are no files at c:\program files\itunes (itunes folder is not there).
After subsequent downloads and installs, I get the same error. When I do the iTunes standard install, QuickTime is
available and works well. I went back to the previous version, but it continued to give me the same error. I found very old versions of iTunes on the web and they too had the same problem.
During the install the iTunes icon briefly appears on my desktop and then disappears. The message box indicating that the installation was interrupted occurs right after that.
I've tried to describe the problem in quite a bit of detail below to help avoid suggested fixes that have been tried and failed.
    1. I have followed the steps in the KB article. Please see the details of that work below.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
    2. I have Administrator access. I have verified that I'm part of both the Adminstrators and SERVICE groups under Impersonate a client after authentication. This process is found in the following doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300361
    3. Windows is fully updated through the Windows Update utility. See Windows version info below.
    4. I can install any other application. I use this computer for work and I can install and uninstall any other application
I try. No other known errors or problems. I've installed other applications that use Microsoft Installer and InstallShield installers without problems.
    5. I tried the Quicktime standalone install and I received the notice that "The installation was interrupted..." Quicktime is now not found on the machine and there is no Quicktime files in the Program Files. During the middle of the installation, I received the following error. Error during QuickTime Standalone (7.1.0.210) install:
Error 1905.Module c:\program files\QuickTime\qtuiPanelControl.dll failed to unregister. HRESULT -2147220472 Contact your support personnel.
When I attempt to install iTunes from the standard install, Quicktime installs properly and works. It only fails during the standalone install.
    6. No strange characters in the folder. There is no itunes folder so it contains no folder. The download exe is on my desktop.
    7. Temp Folder emptied and machine restarted (many times)
    8. Uninstall older versions - They are not listed as installed so there is nothing to uninstall. The Windows Clean Up utility does not list them so I can't use that tool to remove them. It appears that iTunes is cleaning itself up when the installation fails so there are no files. There is no iTunes folder at c:\program files\.
    9. iPodService alert is not there so I don't need to delete it.
    10. Redownload software - It has been downloaded many times. Each time I'm careful to permanently delete the previous install exe so it is redownloaded.
    11. AntiVirus software has been disabled. I'm using McAfee VS Enterprise 8.0.0. I have also checked the AV logs to see if it has blocked an install or other event around that time - there is nothing in the AV logs to show any blocked or prevented activity. No activity at all because the software is disabled.
    12. Registry - A search of "itunes" in the Registry Editor finds a lot of references. Too many to list, but most are in keys that apply to file types.
    13. I have downloaded and attempted to install the Windows Installer 3.0 package from the following URL:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5FBC5470-B259-4733-A914 -A956122E08E8&displaylang=en&Hash=9PV3FS4
I'm told by a box during the install that the version I have installed is newer than the one on the website and there is no need to install it.
    14. The version of iTunes that I'm trying to install right now is 6.0.4.2. I've had this problem for at least three months so I've been trying many versions before its release.
    15. Other than the mentioned AV program, I don't have a third-party firewall, anti-spyware or monitoring program installed.
    System:
    IBM ThinkPad T42
    Windows XP Pro
    1 GB RAM
    McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0
    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Version: 5.1.2600
    Service Pack: 2.0
    Location: C:\WINDOWS
    Hot Fix: KB913446
    IBM T42   Windows XP Pro

It is a miracle - After about 9 months without itunes, the new release installed on my machine today and appears to be working.
7.0.0.70 is the verion I just installed.
Another note to add to this now resolved issue. I bought an AirPort Express and I was not able to install the Admin software on the CD. I received the same error as I received with iTunes and Quicktime. This leads me to believe that this problem is in the registry or some other installer issue that is specific to Apple installations. I will have to go home and try to re-install that software. Maybe the new iTunes version cleared up the problem.

  • Airtunes no longer working with AirPort Express? can anyone help?!

so i recently bought a refurbished airport express and i loved how i could stream audio over the wireless network via airtunes but the delay was a bit annoying so i took it upon myself to try and find a solution to this.
I bought a reverse audio splitter (1 female to 2 male) thinking that i could plug my speakers into the female end of the splitter, leave one of the male audio jacks plugged into the airport express, and the other male end into my computer so when i was at my desk the audio would go straight from my computer to the speakers (bypassing the airport altogether) and the delay problem with airtunes would be solved.
this worked for a little bit, but the next day when i went to play a song via airtunes it didnt work.. no error messages, just no sound.. i did some investigating and found that there was a red light coming from the audio jack on the airport express which i found out could mean that either it is in optical mode or that it is just dead..
But here's the real weird part!! so i also have the program called AirFoil to transmit audio from the internet to my speakers via the airport express, and the speakers connected to the airport can play itunes when AirFoil is connected to itunes even though the light is still red inside the airport audio jack!! weird huh?
Anyways, i just wanna know if there is anything that i can do to fix my AirTunes sound output since it seems like the audio jack on the airport express isnt totally dead??

I'm in the same boat. I can still get on the web with it, but neither airport utility or itunes can see it. disappointing to say the least.
