Airtunes on hospital network

Have been trying to do this: Can get on the internet with a wireless hospital network using my Powerbook G4. I would like to stream music from my Powerbook G4 to an Airport Express hooked up to an Operating Room Stereo. Have tried all types of set-ups but it doesn't work. Any ideas? Can I be on two networks at the same time?

Ben,
Yes and No.
No, I don't think you can be on two wireless networks at once.
But Yes, an idea, you should be able to make the AE a wireless client, connected to the hospital wireless network. Then you stream music from the PBG4 to the hospital wireless network and it transmits it on to the AE.
The option to make the AE a wireless client is an option in the Airport Admin Utility. Remember to turn on Airtunes at the same time.

I am trying to set up my apple tv using the hospital network. I am able to detect the network and chose it. But the way the system works is that you have to agree to the terms and conditions of using their network before access the internet. How do I accomplish this with apple? Please help.

There are some other options to you, if you're not at home and nobody is using your router you could set it up at the hospital, if this isn't an option you could get a second router and use it.  Many ethernet routers are available on the cheap, and ethernet cables are cheap too.
Also, a macbook can share it's internet via the built in wifi it has.  See this go to settings-sharing-internet sharing and configure as desired.  This may require an internet connection via ethernet.  But you should be able to create a wifi network for using something like airplay/home sharing.

  • Help with AExp and airtunes - setting up network

So I've had one of the original airport expresses for a few years, and in my previous house I used it in WDS remote mode, using the ethernet jack as an internet connection for a..ahem...well known gaming console, and the audio jack for airtunes.
In my new home, I have a more complicated setup that I like better, but I have a problem understanding the steps I need to take to get the airtunes speakers to show up in itunes.
    Here is my setup:
the main router is a flying saucer airport extreme (creating a b/g wireless network) -- ethernet out of this into a wired hub, from which run ethernet cables to jacks in the rooms of my house. my iMac is connected to the wall in my office via ethernet. In the living room there is a new model airport extreme, in client mode, creating an 'n only' network. My living room devices are plugged into this airport extreme. (apple tv, tivo, and "gaming console")
I am hooking up some outdoor speakers, and was going to use my old airport express as the way to get music to them. I once again have it set up in WDS remote mode. Everything so far seems to be working, however I can only see the airport express as a speaker option on my iMac iTunes if the airport card is turned on and connected to my b/g network (originating from the airport in the attic) which it isn't usually. I keep it turned off so the imac will use the ethernet hard connection to get media to the apple tv.
I guess I sort of understand that it needs to be connected to the wireless network of which the airport express is a part. And I guess it's not a big deal...if I'm going to be outside, I will have to turn on the receiver, turn on the imac wireless card, and select the express in the iTunes speaker menu. Three steps instead of two...no big deal.
But it seems logical to me, that if everything is connected to each other in some way, it shouldn't matter if the computer streaming music to a wireless device is connected to the network wired or wirelessly.
I guess I could also just leave the wireless card turned on, but if I do, does iMac know to use the fastest possible connection to stream data across the network? i.e. hard wired. (the express is on the b/g network that I keep to allow older devices to get on the network)
If you are still reading at this point, I am impressed. You truly have the heart of a teacher. Please let me know if anyone can explain this to me. Thanks so much.
    iHoo

P.S. -- I just now noticed that under system preferences/network you can 'set service order' which seems to be in what order iMac goes through your network connections. I had never noticed that.
I guess this means that it will default to ethernet (if I put that at the top) for a network connection, but still have the airport express available to it.
So if I am understanding this correctly, it appears the solution is to keep airport turned on and connected to the b/g network.

  • Remote Speaker (AirTunes) Error - "the network connection failed"

I am getting a strange error message when I try to stream music through an AirTunes remote speaker. iTunes tells me this:
*An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "NN". The network connection failed.*
I can't say what has changed for this error to occur. Last time I used the system it worked fine, now it doesn't. I do know I have upgraded iTunes a couple of times since, though.
I am connecting to an 802.11g AirPort Express running firmware version 6.3.
Both our computers (MacBook & MacBook Pro) run Mac OS version 10.5.8.
In my system, the AirPort Express functions solely as a wireless speaker client, as the WLAN network itself is based around an 802.11n AirPort Extreme.
The AP shows a green light, and reports no problems in AP Utility.
When I change the device's "iTunes Speaker Password" setting in AP Utility, iTunes in both our computers immediately reflect the change, so apparently the various parts in the system do speak to one another just fine. They just can't transmit music, for some reason...
Anyone have any idea what might be going on, here?

I have a similar problem. I use AE(g) with a Powerbook G4 and always get this error, which kind of bugs me, since all the settings appear to be correct. Unlike you though, I didn't make it work, not a single time — closing lid, opening and closing iTunes, resetting AE, yet no luck. Tried it all only with current versions of software.
However, the AE does sense when I unplug the speakers, since it first says "no speakers found", and then "the network connection failed". Strange is that the error has no number, nor does Console provide any clues. Sometimes it is pretty annoying when OS X just says "error". What error, where, why... Feels like good ol' windows times.

  • AirTunes on one network, Internet on another?

OK, so I strongly suspect the short answer to this question is "No." That said:
I'm living in corporate housing for a while. The Internet is a shared WiFi system that requires me to re-enter a password every 24 hours. I have a personal Airport Express that I'm currently using for printing and AirTunes.
I don't see any way to add my Airport Express to the building WiFi system; I have no access to the router, etc. and my daily password is for one machine only. Plus you have to enter the password on a Web page -- if there's a way to make an Airport Express do that I've never heard of it.
So right now, when I want to print or use AirTunes, I need to switch networks to the Airport Express -- which of course has no Internet access. So when I'm listening to music, I can't do anything else (e-mail, Safari, etc.).
Is there any way -- a widget, a setting, an app -- to convince my MacBook to use one network for accessing the Internet and the other for printing and AirTunes? Or am I doomed to having to swap networks depending on what I'm doing?
    Many thanks ...

Hello MatthewS1969. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm afraid your suspicion is correct. Unless you can configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to join the wireless network provided to you, there is no "option" in the AirPort Utility to configure it to provide a password every 24 hours.
Do you know if this network is based on 802.1X technology? That is, does it employ a RADIUS-type server to verify your user credentials (username/password) for access? If so, it may be possible to configure your AX for this type of network.

  • Using iTunes /airtunes with 2 networks??

I have iTunes running on a windows XP PC. The PC has a wireless LAN card which can see Network 1. Network 1 has access to the internet. The PC is also connected via an ethernet card to an access point which is network 2. I set-up network 2 purely for sharing music around the house. I have my airport express set-up for airtunes on network 2.
Does anyone know if it is possible to set-up iTunes so that it looks at network 1 to get info from the Gracenote CD database, but sends to airtunes over network 2???
    thanks :o)

iTunes Match is linked to one iTunes Store account and is not transfereable. So you'll need to decicde which account you want to purchase it with.
As long as all the music is in the iTunes Library, and your computer is authorized to play any protected music it will all be added to iTM, since most music from the iTunes Store is DRM-free these days.
The thing to keep in mind is that on any iOS devices, they will need to be signed into the same iTunes Store ID as you used to purchase iTM and you will not be able to switch between accounts at-will. With iTM enabled an iDevice can be associated with only one iTunes Store account per 90 days.

  • Hospital Network Infrastructure

    Hello,
I need to gather some general information about network infrastructure in hospital. Things like which network devices we need and generally how much load each department creates in our network (e.g. the operation room, the reception, etc.) and how much bandwidth we should allocate to that special room. It would be alo very nice if you tell me how I can calculate the load for each machine (i.e. computer connected to the network). Or any good reference books or websites.
    Thank you very much,
    Pat

how much bandwidth we should allocate to that special room
I'm no expert with hospital environment but we've started rolling out Gig ports switches with PoE+ support and 10Gb uplinks to the hospitals here.  Some of the reasons are the uptake of video streaming and high definition media files that are coming online.  Gone were the days when you have to physically look at x-ray templates on in front of a lighted cubicle.  Nowadays the films and negatives (ranging from x-ray, ultra-sound, MRI, etc.) are stored in a bank of servers and streamed up to desktop.
Due to the proliferation of wireless we now have to consider putting wireless access points and associated support equipments (WLC/WiSM, WCS, MSE,  Wireless VoIP phones and RFID tags).
Due to the nature of hospitals, our switches comprise of 3750E and 3750X with 6500 and Sup720.

  • HT5193 I want to use Apple TV in a hospital classroom setting and IT is concerned about security (patient information). Is this an issue and how can I put them at ease?

I want to use the Apple TV to create an interactive white board type setting in the classroom. I appreciate the help.

My first reply was probably a bit vague but it's not clear exactly what you're planning to do.
Anyhow first off, remember this is simply a user to user forum and is not an Apple staffed technical advice area so no one here can accept any responsibility for the implementation you attempt.
If you intend to do anything that could potentially compromise patient confidentiality you must get appropriate advice from suitable agencies including your IT dept and probably Apple itself. Depending which country you are in you will be subject to local healthcare laws aimed at protecting patient confidentiality.
As users we know next to nothing about AppleTV under the hood security.
AppleTV runs a version of iOS just like iPhones and iPads.
There is no antivirus/firewall software for iOS as it's already pretty locked down.
That does not mean it is 100% secure as nothing is, and all these devices can potentially be hacked.
AppleTV itself does not store any content permanently, losing data when it's unplugged, so that is probably not an issue unless someone was going to attempt a forensic style data rescue from the internal components.
If your IT dept allows iPhones or iPads on the network then in principle it's the same, and in many ways less of an issue as it doesn't support 3rd party apps, only a small selection of features from Apple and selected partners.
I assume for your whiteboard plan this would entail using a touch screen like an iPad for mirroring.  Be aware that fullscreen mirroring will send a 4:3 image to the display as the iPad screen is 4:3 not 16:9 (widescreen).
You need to work with your IT dept to assess the feasibility of what you want to do - unless you need internet access, to me it would seem a standalone local network without internet connectivity might remove some concerns about devices connecting to the main hospital network.  Maybe their concern is simply wifi and possible interecption of data sent to the AppleTV - this would likely be a proprietary screen sharing format for Airplay but it could still potentially be intercepted on wifi though I can't really see why anyone would want to as the data would probably be pretty useless to them unless this was a specific attempt to capture Airplay streams and people knew what they were doing and had compromised your wifi security.
    Good luck.

  • Mac Book will no longer join wireless home network

I am having ongoing problems with getting my 2.0G black Mac Book to connect to my wireless home internet and network.
For the first six weeks I had my Mac Book it connected to the network without difficulty. I have a Belkin modem/router, a PC which connects wirelessly and also an airport express on my stereo for airtunes, which was also wirelessly connected. The network was WPA Personal encrypted.
The Mac Book will connect to other wireless networks without any difficulty.
About 3 days ago my Mac Book stopped connecting to my home network - the network name is visible in the airport list but when I tried to connect by entering the WPA password it rejected the password or it returned an "error joining the airport network". The PC and airtunes were still connecting without a problem. It was just the Mac Book that would not connect.
I adjusted the network settings to remove WPA security and the Mac Book then connected easily. However I was not happy about leaving my network unencrypted or unsecured, so I attempted to secure the network again using WPA. Once again, the PC or airtunes joining the network with WPA but the Mac Book would not accept the WPA Password.
I have read as many forum posts as I could find to get all the possible troubleshooting tips on this problem. Here's what I've tried:
    1. Deleting the network from my preferred network list and deleting the password from my keychain, then adding it afresh after rebooting the router and the Mac Book
    3. Renaming the ESSID to a shorter name
    4. Downloading Airport Extreme Update 2007-002
    5. Toggling airport on and off
    6. Using the $ in front of the WPA Passkey (even though that is a fix for the WEP passwords only)
    7. Removing the battery (yes, someone said it worked for them!)
I had no success in getting the Mac Book to connect to the WPA encrypted network (even though it was doing so easily last week!). I then resigned myself to removing the WPA security so that I could at least get an unsecured internet connection on the Mac Book (I was thinking I could deal with the security by hiding the ESSID and using MAC filtering - not ideal, but perhaps the next best solution).
Tonight I removed the WPA security and now the Mac Book will not even connect to the unsecured network. My network ESSID is visible in the airport menu but when I select it - I get the "error connecting to the Airport network' message. I have tried all the usual fixes again (deleting network and passwords and keychains, rebooting router and MacBook etc) but it will not connect to my network. It will, however, connect to my neighbour's unsecured network just fine.
As far as I can deduce, the problem is with how the Mac Book sees my wireless network. The PC is connecting to the network. The Mac Book is connecting to other networks. Have I muddied the waters in my Mac Book through the various fixes I have tried? If so, how can I fix it so that it connects to my unsecured network as easily as it connects to next door's?
Forget about trying to secure the network with WPA for now, I just want to get an unsecured connection at the very least.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
I've looked into the problem a bit further and I think I can trace it to the OS X 10.4.9 updates and the 2007-002 Airport Update downloads. My difficulties accessing the WPA network began after I downloaded the most recent OS X updates. After I downloaded 2007-002 update (designed to make it EASIER to access third party wireless routers! Joke!) I wasn't even able to connect to the unsecured network.
It appears I am not alone with this problem - many others have complained of losing connectivity after downloading these updates. There is a relatively difficult and risky way to uninstall the updates but I have reservations about messing with the OS, and I fear the same problem will arise with future updates.
Because I am now so sick of mucking around trying to fix this and there doesn't seem to be a fix on the horizon, I have solved the problem by buying an airport express and ditching the belkin router. I have now re-established the network without any problems using the airport express. So much for Macs being simple and compatible - the reality is a long way behind the impressive tv advertising.

  • More airtunes frustration.  1.5 years and it still doesn't work.

After a year and a half, I'm ready to wop Steve Jobs upside the head. This shouldn't be so difficult, but maybe I'm just looking for too much.
    The straight scoop:
I have an iMac G5 with built in airport extreme. Connected via ethernet cable to a linksys wireless router which is connected via cable to my DSL modem. That part works fine. There is also a windows machine connected wirelessly to the linksys for internet access (using WPA). That works fine also, and is the reason for the Linksys. I added the airport express to the existing network (only to play airtunes, no other networking desired). It works, for maybe 1 song, then it starts dropping out a few seconds at a time, then completely drops out, no music at all. However, the green light is still on. Shouldn't this work?!! I've also done this with no wireless security at all, and it makes no difference.
Background for those who want more info:
Before I got the linksys and the windows box connected, I used to go straight to the dsl modem with the iMac ethernet. At that time, I had the iMac talking straight to the airport express (wirelessly) for airtunes. It worked okay, but only in the sense that it didn't drop out while playing music. Once I stopped playing iTunes through it (even if I just paused it for a minute), the airport would lose connectivity, and I'd have to chose it from the airport menu again in order to see it and play to it. And the light was NEVER green in this config. It always flashed amber whether playing music or not.
So I'm at a loss now. I've removed the AX from the network, and created it's own network for music only (like it used to be). It works (with the flashing amber light), but I can't use the internet with the mac and transmit music at the same time. I have to go under "location" in the apple menu and choose which network I want, the internet access (via ethernet), or the airtunes network. Isn't there any way to do both at once since they aren't both on the wire or wireless?
    Help please.
    THANKS
    David

one of the things you might want to try is to enable the "airtunes over ethernet" functionality using the "Airport admin utility" (look in the tab "music"). That way, when connecting the airport via ethernet to your home network, you can stream the music using the more reliable wired network.
You may also wish to upgrade the firmware of your Aiport express, which could solve the problem.
The way I see it is that the AE also works as a hub, thereby relaying every packet on your network. given that the ether is already crowded because of your other WAP, it may fill the network.
You can also switch off the network functionality of your AE, using the same admin utility.
    good luck

  • Can't reconnect to hidden WPA2 network

I have been piloting a mobile application for my hospital's information system and have been frustrated by the iPhone and iPod touch's inability to remember the network from day to day. The SSID is hidden and it is WPA2 encrypted for security. Some days I can log in; most days I can't. We have not found this to happen with Blackberry's, Samsungs or portable computers. Unless Apple fixes this problem (which clearly appears limited to iPhones and Touches), it is highly likely that our hospital will strongly discourage the several hundred physicians from purchasing iPhones or using the iPod Touch for their next PDA. I have not been able to find a workaround. I can tell the network is there - using WIFI Finder documents the network signal, but the devices don't connect.
I suspect this issue will become even more acute as more business networks provide mobile access.

    Scott:
I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue and have found the behavoir odd. For several hours, I had no trouble reconnecting out of standby mode. Then, I couldn't connect, but if I typed in the SSID, without the password (the network administrators don't want users to know the password, but install it directly on their smartphone/computer device), after reporting "Unable to connect", actually does connect. Unfortunately, the Touch then REMEMBERS the network name, but forgets the password (probably because when I attempt to connect without the password, it REMEMBERS that attempt). I have subsequently tried using a Blackberry and Samsung phones to access the hospital network and have been able to connect every time - at the same times as the Touch failed. So, there's something quirky in the Touch software specifically as it relates to this. Perhaps a subsequent iteration of the software will help. I will pass of your suggestion about the uselessness of hiding the SSID of the network, but enterprise network administators are not reknown for their flexibility.

  • SA520 Optional port WAN mode for isolated network?

Long story short, client bought 2 SA520's, one for each site due to it's ability to have a second wan/lan port (Optional Port).  They have a 2nd WAN connection installed that does not have internet.  Esentially it is a hospital link that was install to gain access to some Citrix systems and custom web portals for hispital use.
The IDEA was to enable optional port for WAN mode.  Then I was going to add a route statement that any traffic destined to the hospital network would route to the optional wan port,
Problem - When just enabling WAN port in Optional settings, the WAN port won't come online.  I have to chose load balancing or failover.  Neither of which are true;  I don't want balancing or failover since it isn't a real "internet" connection.
I thought about setting port to LAN mode but it appears that simply makes the router a 5 port switch instead of 4.  I was hoping I could just simply create a second LAN segment and route to it as well for certain traffic.  Once I enable LAN mode however all configuration disappears and the Networking>LAN menu shows no specific Optional Port configuration options.
???  Can this not be configured as such?  Saying it offers a optional port for LAN/WAN/DMZ configurations sort of means doing what I need it to do.  I'm missing something, somewhere.
    Help!
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
One thing you can do is to enable the Optional WAN port.  Set the 'WAN Mode' to load balancing.  Then use the 'Protocol' Bindings' to handle your routes.  You would configure your Hospital network IP network range as the destination network and select your Optional WAN.  Another rule would be a destination of ANY for the Destination that would go out the dedicated WAN.  You may have to add a rule for DNS resolution to go through your hospital network so the local hospital DNS entries resolve.
    Hope this helps.

  • Network is public but password required before I can browse

Hi - iPad3, trying to connect to a hospital wifi network. The wireless network itself is not protected and my ipad connects to it automatically. But I can't browse yet. On my laptop on the same network when I launch a browser I am sent to a web page that asks me to enter a user name and password. But neither safari or chrome on the iPad gives me that choice - they just tell me they can't retrieve the page because I'm not connected to the network.
The wifi tab of system preferences tells me that I *am* connected, though.
    How to deal with this?
    Thanks!

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap on the name of the hospital network. Then tap Forget this Network.
Let the iPad attempt to connect again and, hopefully, you'll be prompted to enter the correct password.

  • Preferred network list...

Hi there - I have had a new MacBook Pro for a few weeks now and it is great! - a god improvement over my ageing PowerbookG4.
anway - I have wireless 'b' network at home in use by various macs and PC's - the MBP was fine and registered my home wifi network as a preferred network, but in the past two days it has decided it doesn't want to have it as a preferred network and always asks me if I want to connect manually. this is getting annoying as everytime I shut the lid or logout or whatever, it drops off the network and asks me if I want to connect on reopeneing.
How do I go about putting it back on the prefferred list?
I have opened network options in the system pref - and the advanced tab - the network SSID is listed there - but still it doesn't want to connect by default.
my networ kit is a Linksys router (cable broadband conection) with an airport express downstairs to use airtunes. The network is secured using 128bit WEP.
thanks for any help as this is doing my head in!!

Thats just it - I don't have the option to click a "by default join.." button anywhere. the MBP is running OSX 10.5.1 - I think this is one of the 'new' things in leopard a I am sure I had that option on my powerbook
    thanks,

  • Airport Extreme & Express Network

I have the Airport Extreme as my base with three Airport expresses acting as extenders, one downstairs and two daisy chaining to an outdoor area about fifty feet away.  We have an old house with heavy plaster and stucco walls that just kills signals.  In setting up Airtunes, can i use one of the extenders or do i need another express to be the airtunes carrier?  Am i limited on how many expresses are on the system.  New to the apple world, but loving how easy things seem to work.
    thanks

An AirPort Express can serve for AirTunes and for network extension at the same time.
