AirTunes over Ethernet: Not running!

Hello everybody.
I have my Airport Express station attached to my stereo and to my network via ethernet. on my cube i can allways find it in iTunes as remote speaker - but not so on my macbook pro. there i even can't find the option to activate airtunes over ethernet in the airport admin utility (while on my cube with os x 10.4.9 i can!). airtunes over wireless works but i often have my macbook in my office where the airport-signal is quite poor and it would be great to have the sound streamed over ethernet (since there i hade no porblems with audio drops due to poor signal strenght...).
someone can help?
thanks alot..
sepoe

Right, I have an ADSL Router wich is my DHCP Server. It has a built in 4Port hub, where I connect my AirPortExpress and a PowerLine adapter. In my office is a switch to which a secound PowerLine adapter is connected. Also, my Apple Cube and my MacBook is connectet to this switch. While it is possible to stream music from my Cube (OS 10.4.9) it isn't from my MacBook Pro. Furthermore, the checkbox in Airport Admin Tool to activate AirTunes is not available on my MacBook Pro while it is on my Cube with the older OS.

  • "Enable AirTunes over Ethernet"

Checking the "Enable AirTunes over Ethernet" box in the Music tab in the AirPort Utility has been suggested as a solution to my problem below:
have iTunes on a PC (no wireless card) connected to an AirPort Extreme base station via an ethernet cable. I have an AirPort Express connected as a client to the AirPort Extreme's wireless network. The AirPort Express is also connected via mini to RCA cord to my stereo. I would like to use AirTunes to stream music from iTunes on the PC to the stereo, but can't seem to figure out how to do it. Any thoughts?
But, I can't seem to locate it in the Music tab. Any thoughts? Is it not an option in the newer software (firmware?)?

This suggestion from MacFixit and an upgrade to iTunes 7.7.1 solved the inability to stream music to an Airport Express from iTunes on an ethernet-connected computer.
Music will not stream through AirPort Express Some users have reported that streaming music through AirPort Express units fails after the update. The most common fix for this issue involves changing your IPv6 settings. In order to change this setting, open System Preferences then the Network pane and click on your currently used interface (Ethernet, AirPort, etc.). Click on the TCP/IP settings for the interface -- at the bottom if you see a button which says 'Configure IPv6...' click it make the setting "Off." Press the Apply Now button.

  • Airtunes over Ethernet?

I have an Extreme wireless network and a new Express with 802.11n. They're connected to each other via Ethernet to create a roaming network, which means the Express is operating in bridge mode. Everything works. I can stream Airtunes beautifully over the wireless network.
I also have an older iMac without an Airport card. It's connected to network's wired LAN and it works fine on the network. Is it possible to use it as a music server over the wired LAN? iTunes Preferences > Devices is set to look for Airtunes connected speaker.
Everything is on the same subnet.
I have read of a setting in my Express to allow Airtunes over Ethernet but the selection isn't there in Airport Utility.
    So, is AoE possible?

Apparently AoE is enabled by default. Airtunes works fine over the wired LAN.
    Airtunes without the Air. Hmm...

  • Airtune Over Ethernet  with Time Capsule or Airport Extreme

Can the previous generation Time Capsule or Airport Extreme bridge an ethernet client to an Airtunes network?
Current Setup: I have an aluminum iMac wired to my Time Capsule; currently, I use the aluminum as a music server by connecting to several Airport Express clients over the the iMac's built-in Airport for Airtunes support.
Problem: I have 3-802.11g clients dragging my wifi network. I would like to dedicate the iMac's internal network to the g-clients so I don't have to use compatibility mode for my n-network. However, I will lose Airtunes speaker support when I use internet sharing over the built-in Airport. Airtunes does not appear to support the Time Capsule ethernet client.
    Nodes:
    -AE 802.11g (Airtunes only)
-AE 802.11n (Airtunes and USB printer)
-1st gen Time Capsule (Internet gateway, "creating network" 802.11 g/n,
-iMac 8,1 (Music server via internal wifi, wired TC client)
    -Macbook 4,1 (wifi client)
    -iPhone
-Canon MP620 (USB to iMac, wifi to Macbook)

    Further to Bob's comments..
A Gen1 TC will be using marvel wireless chip and your 2008 and 2010 Macbook will use atheros and/or broadcom cards.. Just open your system profiler and look for info on the airport. We find the mixture of wireless chipsets especially older draft N and later N products can give very varied results.
The very fact you are linking at 270 and not 300mbps shows some reduction from theoretical max speed.. and really to get over 100mbps with any wireless you need perfect setup.. matched wireless chips etc.
Do a test uploading and downloading a file to the TC to see if the LAN speed is better than internet speed.
In reality I think you are doing especially well.. we see loads of people complaining about slow internet here who are getting less than 10% of the speed they get direct when routed through the TC. And on most occasions the limit in speed is not really going to affect what you do, as the real links to the internet are not that fast.

  • Airport Express ; Airtunes via ethernet not working...

    Hi there,
I have a problem with my airport and I can't find any solution online...I explain. I have an airport express (version 7.5.2) connected to my network on ethernet. The airport is connected to a router in bridge mode.
When I want to listen music with my laptop on Wifi it work perfectly but I can't make my desktop computer, which is also connected to the router via ethernet, detect the speaker with Airlay and I can't find why !
I already tried to disable firewall of course but no luck...
The only possible cause I see is that perhaps IPV6 is needed to make it work ??
    Any explanation ?
    Thks

Your laptop presumably is connecting via Wifi directly to the Airport Express.  From the perspective of the AE, it is on the LAN side.  Your AE is connected via eithernet to the rest of your network.  From the perspective of the AE, this is on the WAN side.
Use Airport Utility to check the settings of the AE.
    1) Select the Airport Express Device
    2) Click Manual Setup
    3) From the icons across the top, click "Music"
    4) Is the "Enable Airplay over WAN" checkbox checked?  I'm guessing probably not.  Click that checkbox and update the AE (it will restart).  You should then be able to see it from the WAN/ethernet side.

  • Printer/Internet sharing over ethernet not working

Due to unsolvable problems with Airport and 10.5.2, I've decided to set up an ethernet network between my Mac Pro and MacBook. I have an ethernet cable going from the ethernet 2 port on my MP to the MacBook. I am able to establish a file sharing connection, so I know that the cable is working.
However, I cannot get printer sharing or Internet sharing to work.
I have enabled printer sharing in Print & Fax preferences, and selected the USB printers I want to share. But when I go to Print & Fax preferences on my MacBook, although I do see my printer when I attempt to add it the preferred driver does not show up and it selects "generic postscript" instead. This is completely strange, because when I go through the same process when the MacBook is connected to my Airport network (when it isn't dropped out), I am able to add the printer with the correct driver without a problem.
As far as Internet sharing goes, there's nothing happening at all. On the MacBook when I open Network preferences it says "Built-in ethernet isn't connected". I don't know what I'm supposed to do to get this going. I already have enabled Internet Sharing on the Mac Pro ("share built-in ethernet 1 connection with computers connected to ethernet 2"), but I don't know what to do beyond that.
    Do I need a switch?

sure, there are workarounds. I was trying not to spend any money!
Mostly I am curious what caused it to stop working.
    Thanks for the input!!

  • ITunes 7.1 doesn't recognize Airport Express over ethernet

Running iTunes 7.1 on Windows XP desktop. Immediately after update, iTunes no longer can see my Airport Express as a remote speaker (Airtunes over Ethernet).
Airport Express has the latest updates. Airport Utility has no trouble recognizing it by name. It doesn't have a password on it. The Airport is happily providing wireless for my laptop. It is my only WiFi base station, because I have a small place. It's been dependable for over a year.
I'm truly bummed, because earlier today I got a Griffin AirClick USB, and it works like a charm. I was looking forward to using it with full-screen coverflow in 7.1.
iBook G4 and assorted Win & Linux boxes   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iTunes is on an XP PC

The problem turns out to be an incompatibility with Bonjour for Windows. A post by "f00fighter" over in the "iTunes for Windows Upgrade Issues" forum solved it. I quote him below:
    ******Quote***********
Looks like this issue is due to an incompatibility between Bonjour for Windows and iTunes 7.1.0.59 for Windows (thanks toonz!)
To workaround the issue you can stop the Bonjour Service by going to Start \ Control Panel \ Administrative Tools \ Services, then highlight the Bonjour Service and stop it. You might also want to set the Startup status of the Bonjour Service to Manual (or Disabled) to prevent the service from starting automatically the next time you restart you PC.
Note - this is only a temporary fix, and turns off the Bonjour service...so don't do this if you have other applications that rely on the Bonjour Service. A fix from Apple is needed to truly "fix" this issue.

  • How do I set up multiple Airport Expresses to connect over ethernet for Airtunes only?

I am trying to set up an Airtunes network using an Airport Extreme and three Airport Expresses connected together via ethernet (CAT5 cable). At each Airport Express there will be a speaker setup. I don't need/want internet connectivity on the network, but not sure if it is required for setup or not. I have made this work over wifi, using the Expresses to extend the network, but struggling to get this to work over ethernet.
I would be verry grateful of a step-by-step method to setting this up! I am also looking to set up 6 airport expresses to do the same thing in another location.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the info.
I assume that the AirPort Extreme is setup and working at this point.
Work with one AirPort Express at a time to get them all configured, and then you can locate them where they will be needed.
AirPort Setup will configure the Express devices to "extend a wireless network" using Ethernet, so they will be broadcasting the same wireless signal as the AirPort Extreme and provide more wireless signal coverage as well.
I have yet to meet the first person who thought that they had too much wireless coverage, but you would have the option to turn off the wireless on the Express if you wanted. Most users like having extended wireless for their devices.
Temporarily, move an Express close to the AirPort Extreme
Connect a spare Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Express
Power up the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the Airport icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for AirPort Express to appear just under the listing of New AirPort Base Station
Click directly on the AirPort Express
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name that you want to use....example.....Express1.....and click Next
AirPort Setup will configure everything for you. Notice that the message will say that the Express is being set up to extend using Ethernet. When you see the message of setup complete, click Done.
Now you can move the Express to the remote location where it is needed, hook it up to the Ethernet connection there, power up the Express and set up AirTunes on the device.
AirTunes is enabled by default, to other than make the speaker connection, you won't have much to do on that.
Set up other Express devices the same way, except assign a different name to each device....example....Express2, Express3, etc.....to keep things organized.

  • Airplay not working over wireless, works over ethernet?

I posted this in multiple forums in which it applies to.
Just looking for troubleshooting suggestions from my wireless N MBPro, to my wired ATV2. Here is the rundown (all devices running latest updates):
1)used to work just fine with old router
2)airplay works in all directions, from wireless devises to the wired ATV2
3)updated to a much newer N router from cisco
4)now, airplay works over Ethernet from itunes to ATV2 (and iphone4s to ATV2), ATV2 plays music from my MBPro just fine
    5) however airplay fails to work from itunes to ATV2 over wirelesss
6)all wireless connections are sound, it is not a bandwidth problem, it literally says "connecting to apple tv" and never stops or connects
7)itunes sees the ATV2 just fine over both Ethernet and wireless connections, i can select ATV2 as an output even when on wireless
8)it will even ask for the password once i select it
So, any suggestions? I just dont know where I am going wrong, somehow the wireless aspect is the broken link. As a side note, all wireless clients and wired clients are on the same subnet.
Thanks for any suggestions or help!

I had the same problem.  Disable any IGMP, or IGMP proxy features on your router.  As soon as I disabled IGMP proxy on my router everything came up has been working for a while. Lack of driver support on the wireless clients is likely the cause. oh well, at least its working now.

  • Internet over ethernet AND airtunes over wifi?

okay, so I have my airport express plugged into the sterio, but it's not permitted to be connected to the office network. So, I plug my macbook pro into the ethernet in the wall, and connect to airtunes over the airport. It plays fine for a few minutes then loses the remote speakers.
Is there any way to configure it to know that the only thing it does over airport is airtunes?

for anyone who might be interested, it just started working on its own.

Thanks for these replies! and fast!
I am not connected with a hub or a switch: it is a MODEM/ROUTER TrendNet TEW435BRM which goes well for DSL.
I cannot run dmesg for know... I will look in it later.
The computer is a new laptop (netbook type): Acer Aspire 1410 722G25n, Intel Celeron Mobile processor 723 (1.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1 Core, 64 Bits, 1M cache..., 10Watts max...), VGA: Intel GMA 4500MHD UP to 732 MB DVMT, 11.6" HD LED LCD
RAM: 2 GB memory, STORAGE: 250 GB HDD, WLAN: Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/Draft-N,

On the internet, some said that it is known as an Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit under Windows... and that the useful linux package is AR81Family-v1.0.0.10.tar.gz for them, but impossible to find on the internet (official site is down, the archive found elsewhere do not uncompress, etc...)
Linux is archlinux x86_64. The kernel driver in use is "atl1c" (on my ASUS eeepc beside, it is atl2 and runs well).
    Ok, so:
    - 1 read dmesg
    - 2 try with another cable (the wire I used is old).
    - 3 try with another kernel driver (have to find it)
    - 4 send back the computer to be repaired!
    Bye

  • Time Capsule slow internet over wireless after 1 day (not so over ethernet)

I have had my time capsule since they first came out, so I guess about 8 months.
I have had this issue since day one, but I have decided this is just too much.
I have a 25Mb connection, and when I first plug in the TC I get the full speed. BUT... I am down to about 500Kb/s after 2 days, about 300 and so on until it stops at about 65K/s, LESS THAN 1 Mb!
If I unplug it for less then 1 sec and plug it back in, the cycle starts all over agin.
HOWEVER!, This is not the case over ethernet. Everything over ethernet will always get the full speed. It does not degrade, so it has nothing to do with my ISP. They are routed through the TM.
I have auto TM turned OFF on all machines, and backups are ONLY done manually. (I only do them once a week over ethernet).
I have tried every setting, every channel.
The speed does not come back if I simply restart it via software. I must unplug it (only for a split second).
It is 11 feet away from me (counting the angle( it is on a shelf)). My signal is great, and there is nothing else around it.
And this is my second one. The last one did this as well.

The same thing is happening to me, exactly. Although my top speed is lower than yours (I'm on FiOS). Unplug it for a second, and you're back to normal. Otherwise, it will slowly and inexorably degrade until you have something worse than dial-up.
This is completely unacceptable, and it's far too typical of the current state of Apple's quality control and support that there is no official acknowledgment of this screamingly obvious and annoying problem, which happens every single time I use my Time Capsule, which is to say every day, and no recommended fix.
Sometimes I feel as if I could really hate this company!

  • Airport not seen over ethernet

I have a G4 desktop connected to an Airport extreme (which has a printer connected also) via an ethernet cable. Airport is also connected to a DSL modem. Up to 10.4.3 it worked fine.
After upgrading to 10.4.4 (and also the recent Itunes and Quicktime updates) the G4 can no longer see the printer and Airport Admin Utility doesn't see Airport either. Curiously, the internet connection (i.e. Safari) works fine. I have repaired permissions and repaired the disk. I tried another account as a test and it has the same problem. However, booting from a backup version of 10.4.3 works fine. Is there something I can do to make the Airport connection work under 10.4.4?

Like a later post by Mark Griffin, I did nothing further with respect to my problem but several hours later found that Airport could be fully accessed over ethernet. Its a mystery.

  • How to print on HP LaserJet 2200 over Ethernet?

    Hi,
I did an upgrade to Snow Leopard and would like to print on a HP LaserJet 2200 over Ethernet. OS X and the HP printer drivers are up to date now.
The printer has been cold reset and on the configuration print out there's the IP address 0.0.0.0
Now my question is how to get this printer to work with Snow Leopard over Ethernet? I did not find a tutorial how to assign an IP address to the printer first so I got stuck.
Could you give me a hint where I should start with the configuration first?

    OK, now the printer works
I reset the router and checked if DHPC is running.
I reset the printer (hold down the GO button, turn the printer on and continue to hold the GO button for five to ten seconds).
Checked at router that the printer is visible as network device.
At the router I assigned a fixed IP address to the printer.
At OS X System Preferences > Printer I added a new printer with "HP Jetdirect - Socket", the fixed IP address and the correct printer driver "HP LaserJet 2200".
Now the printer has been recognized well by the system (Tray 3, Duplex and printer RAM) and printing works.
    THANKS.

  • QMASTER hints 4 usual trouble (QM NOT running/CLUSTEREd nodes/Networks etc

All, I just posted this with some hints & workaround with very common issues people have on this forum and keep asking concerning the use of APPLE QMASTER with FCP, SHAKE, COMPRESSOR and MOTION. I've had many over the last 2 years and see them coming up frequently.
Perhaps these symptoms are fixed in FCS2 at MAY 2007 (now). However if not here's some ROTS that i used for FCP to compressor via QMASTER cluster for example. NO special order but might help someone get around the stuff with QMASTER V2.3, FCP V5.1.4, compressor.app V2.3
I saw the latest QMASTER UI and usage at NAB2007 and it looked a little more solid with some "EASY SETUP" stuff. I hope it has been reworked underneath.. I guess I will know soon if it has.
For most FCP/COMPRESSOR, SHAKE. MOTION and COMPRESSOR:
    • provide access from ALL nodes to ALL the source and target objects (files) on their VOLUMES. Simply MOUNT those volumes through the APPLE file system (via NFS) using +k (cmd+k) or finder/go/connect to server. OR using an SSAFS such as XSAN™ where the file systems are all shared over FC not the network. YOu will notice the CPU's going very busy for a small while. THhis is the APPLE FILE SYSTEM task,,, I guess it's doing 'spotlight stuff". This goes away after a few minutes.
    • set the COMPRESSOR preferences for "CLUSTER OPTIONS" to "Never copy source to Cluster". This means that all nodes can access your source and target objects (files) over NFS (as above). Failure to to this means LENGTHY times to COPY material back an forth, in some cases undermining the pleasure gained from initially using clustering (reduced job times)
    • DONT mix the PHYSICAL or LOGICAL networks in your local cluster. I dont know why but I could never get this to work. Physical mean stick with eother ETHERNET or FIREWIRE or your other (airport etc whic will be generally way to slow and useless), Logical measn leepin all nodes on the SAME subnet. You can do this siply by setting theis up in the system preferences/QMASTER/advanced tab under "Use Network Interfaces". In my currnet QUAd I set this to use BUILT IN ETHERNET1 and in the MPBDC's I set this to their BUILTIN ETHERNET.
    • LOGICAL NETWORKS (Subnet): simply HARDCODE an IP address on the ETHERNET (for eample) for your cluster nodes andthe service controller. FOr eample 3.1.1.x .... it will all connect fine.
    • Physical Networks: As above (1) DONT MIX firewire (IPoFW) and Ethernet(IPoE). (2) if more than extra service node USE A HUB or SWITCH. I went and bought a 10 port GbE HUB for about $HK400 (€40) and it worked fine. I was NEVER able to get a stable system of QMASTER mixing FW and ETHERNET. (3) fwiw using IP of FW caused me a LOAD of DISK errors and timouts (I/O errors) on thosse DISKs that were FW400 (al gone now) but it showed this was not stable overall
    • for the cluster controller node MAKE SURE you set the CLUSTER STORAGE (system preferences/QMASTER/shared cluster storage) for the CLUSTER CONTROLLER NODE IS ON A SHARED volume (See above). This seems essential for SHAKE to work. (if not check the Qmaster errors in the console.app [see below] ). IF you have an SSAFS like XSAN™ then just add this cluster storage on a share file path. NOte that QMASTER does not permit the cluster storage to be on a NETWORK NODE for some reason. So in short just MOUNT the volume where the SHARED CLUSTER file is maintained for the CLUSTER controller.
    • FCP - avoid EXPORT to COMPRESSOR from the TIMELINE - it never seems to work properly (see later). Instead EXPORT FROM SEQUENCE in the BROWSER - consistent results
    • FCP - "media missing " messages on EXPORT to COMPRESSOR.. seems a defect in FCP 5.1 when you EXPORT using a sequence that is NOT in the "root" or primary trry in the FCP PROJECT BROWSER. Simply if you have browser/bin A contains(Bin B (contains Bin C (contains sequence X))) this will FAIL (wont work) for "EXPORT TO COMPRESSOR" if you use EXPORT to COMPRESSOR in a FCP browser PANE that is separately OPEN. To get around this, simply OPEN/EXPOSE the triangles/trees in the BROWSER PANE for the PROJECT and select the SEQUENCE you want and "EXPORT to COMPRESSOR" from there. This has been documented in a few places in this forum I think.
    • FCP -> COMPRESSOR -> .M2V (for DVDSP3): some things here. EXPORTING from an FCP SEQUENCE with CHAPTER MARKERS to an MPEG2 .M2V encoding USING A CLUSTER causes errors in the placement of the chapter makers when it is imported to DVDSP3. In fact CONSISTENTLY, ALL the chapter markers are all PLACED AT THE END of the TRACK in DVD SP# - somewhat useless. This seems to happen ALSO when the source is an FCP reference movie, although inconsistent. A simple work around if you have the machines is TRUN OF SEGMENTING in the COMPRESSOR ENCODER inspector. let each .M2V transcode run on the same service node. FOr the jobs at hand just set up a CLUSTER and controller for each machine and then SELECT the cluster (myclusterA, hisclusterb, herclusterc) for each transcode job.. anyway for me.. the time spent resolving all this I could have TRANSCODED all this on my QUAD and it would all have ben done by sooner! (LOL)
    • CONSOLE logs: IF QMASTER fails, I would suggest your fist port of diagnosis should be /Library/Logs/Qmaster in there you will see (on the controller node) compressor.log, jobcontroller.com.apple.qmaster.cluster.admin.log, and lots of others including service controller.com.apple.qmaster.executorX.log (for each cpu/core and node) andd qmasterca.log. All these are worth a look and for me helped me solve 90% of my qmaster errors and failures.
    • MOTION 3 - fwiw.. EXPORT USING COMPRESSOR to a CLUSTER seems to fail EVERY TIME.. seems MOTION is writing stuff out to a /var/spool/qmaster
TROUBLESHOOTING QMASTER: IF QMASTER seems buggered up (hosed), then follow these steps PRIOR to restarting you machines.
go read the TROUBLE SHOOTING in the published APPLE docs for COMPRESSOR, SHAKE and "SET UP FOR DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING" and serach these forums CAREFULLY.. the answer is usually there somewhere.
    ELSE THEN,, try these steps....
You'll feel that QMASTER is in trouble when you
    • see that the QMASTER ICON at the top of the screen says 'NO SERVICES" even though that node is started and
    • that the APPLE QMASTER ADMINSTRATOR is VERY SLOW after an 'APPLY" (like minutes with SPINNING BEACHBALL) or it WONT LET YOU DELETE a cluster or you see 'undefined' nodes in your cluster (meaning that one was shut down or had a network failure)..... all this means it's going to get worse and worse. SO DONT submit any more work to QAMSTER... best count you gains and follow this list next.
    (a) in COMPRESSOR.app / RESET BACKGROUND PROCESSES (its under the COMPRESSOR name list box) see if things get kick started but you will lose all the work that has been done up to that point for COMPRESSOR.app
    b) if no OK, then on EACH node in that cluster, STOP the QMASTER (system preferences/QMASTER/setup [set 0 minutes in the prompt and OK). Then when STOPPED, RESET the shared services my licking OPTION+CLICK on the "START" button to reveal the "RESET SERVICES". Then click "START" on each node to start the services. This has the actin of REMOVING or in the case where the CLUSTER CONTROLLER node is "RESET" f terminating the cluster that's under its control. IF so Simply go to APPLE QMASTER ADMINISTRATOR and REDFINE it. Go restart you cluster.
    c) if step (b) is no help, consult the QMASTER logs in /Library/Logs/Qmaster (using the cosole.app) for any FILE MISSING or FILE not found or FILE ERROR . Look carefully for the NODENAME (the machine_name.local) where the error may have occured. Sometimes it's very chatty. Others it is not. ALso look in the BATCH MONITOR OUTPUT for errors messages. Often these are NEVER written (or I cant find them) in the /var/logs... try and resolve any issues you can see (mostly VOLUME or FILE path issues from my experience)
    (d) if still no joy then - try removing all the 'dead' cluster files from /var/tmp/qmaster , /var/sppol/qmaster and also the file directory that you specified above for the controller to share the clustering. FOR shake issues, go do the same (note also where the shake shared cluster file path is - it can be also specified in the RENDER FILEOUT nodes prompt).
    e) if all this WONT help you, its time to get the BIG hammer out. Simply, STOP all nodes of not stopped. (if status/mode is "STOPPING" then it [QMASTER] is truly buggered). DISMOUNT the network volumes you had mounted. and RESTART ALL YOUR NODES. Tis has the affect of RESTARTING all the QMASTERD tasks. YEs sure you can go in and SUDO restart them but it is dodgy at best because they never seem to terminate cleanly (Kill -9 etc) or FORCE QUIT.... is what one ends up doing and then STILL having to restart.
    f) after restart perform steps from (B) again and it will be usually (but not always) right after that

    Warwick,
Thanks for joining the forum and for doing all this work and posting your results for our benefit.
As FCP2 arrives in our shop, we will try once again to make sense of it and to see if we can boost our efficiencies in rendering big projects and getting Compressor to embrace five or six idle Macs.
Nonetheless, I am still in "Major Disbelief Mode" that Apple has done so little to make this software actually useful.
