AirTunes over Wired Ethernet Port

I seem to be finding conflicting information on this so I hope to ask a simple question. Can the AE be configured as a Wireless AP (but also wired back in to the home network in bridged mode, NAT off, DCHP Off) and still allow users on the wired side or on other APs to see AirTunes.
To date my testing finds this is not possible as I can see AirTunes from any client connecting through the AE but can not see AirTunes from any client on the home network either wired or wireless. Everything is the latest version and I can ping the AP from any device on the home network. Simple test result is Laptop connect wireless to AE works fine, same Laptop connect to other AP or wired directly does not work.
I do understand I can configure the AE as a client, but then I loose the AP functionality of the AE. Am I missing something or is this simply not possible?
John

If you configure the AirPort Express as a bridge connected by ethernet to your main router, and set the Express up to create a wireless network with exactly the same wireless network name, security and password as your "main" network, you will in effect have a larger wireless network and you should be able to "see" all your devices.. Computers will automatically connect to the access point with the strongest signal, which will normally be the closest device.
Be sure to enable AirTunes, of course on the AirPort Express.

  • Poor network performance on wired ethernet port and airport

I'm using Leopard 10.5.1 on a home network comprised of a new, fully up-to-date (firmware wise) D-link wireless router and a couple ethernet hubs. I initially had problems because of old router firmware, but buying the new router and making sure firmware was up-to-date seems to have solved the connection problems. What I now experience is that whichever network cennection I am using, wireless or wired ethernet port, will slow down so slow that it's impossible to get any web content, upload files to my local server, or sent emails with any kind of attachment. Turning off the connection I am using, either wired ethernet or airport, and switching to the other solves the problem for a short time, usually a couple days or so. Then that connection with slow down and I have to switch back - again solving the problem. So to keep my network connection alive, I have to keep switching back and forth between the wired ethernet and the airport connection.
The rest of my network consists of several Windows machines including a Windows 2000 server. None of these devices ever have any problems with network access.
I've tried playing with the advanced settings with no luck. Does anyone know of a specific setting that might be the culprit?

    Hi ,
Maybe you can try to disable checksum offloading and jumbo frames on the Physical NIC (ESX platform) to check result .

  • Implementing IEEE 802.1X Standard over wired Ethernet LAN

I'm trying to implement the 802.1X Standard on a wired LAN. Basically it is the EAP authentication mechanisms (like EAP-TLS, PEAP-MSCHAPv2) over the LAN(EAPOL). I've included the EAP Catalog items into my project but found out that the api's exposed by the
eap DLL's are used by RAS. Remote Access service(RAS) I believe uses the Point to Point protocol which is different from EAPOL.
Comparing to wireless, it seems there is a 802.1x Authentication module within the
    Native 802.11(Wireless) framework(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg158436.aspx)
I would just like to know if any Platform\BSP changes or implementations can be made to support EAP Authentications over Wired LAN?

  • Dead wired Ethernet port?

I have the non-gigabit extreme. Connected my new Apple TV to the third wired port and it could not connect. I don't recall ever using this port, I only have 2 wired computers. The ATV connects via wireless ok but I wanted to save the wifi bandwidth for the macbooks... I moved one of the wired computers over to this unused port and it couldn't access the internet, no connection. I rebooted the extreme but still no connection. Any ideas on how to reset it or ???

    Hi kintampa-
Are you sure that you do not have a bad cable?
You can hook up an ethernet switch to one of the ports and give yourself as many ports as you need.

I'm no expert but I don't think you can print from your wired Mac via the router- I had a similar problem a while ago. Now I have my printer connected to the express via usb that is shared by my laptops wirelessly. I also have an iMac connected to the express via ethernet that works fine too.
I think the printer has to be connected directly to the express, not through a router.
    Hope this helps!

  • Cameras Wired Ethernet instead of Wireless

Comcast supports Powerline adapters which could be used to wire the cameras for ethernet instead of wireless...... Can you have the firmware settings by default connect to wired?   Currently the option in the cameras is set to by default go over wireless and if I have a camera witha  weak wireless connection it will use that over a strong wired connection with the latest firmware release.

    Use the Airport Admin Utility.
On the Music Tab enusre that Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port is checked.

  • Airtunes with wired desktop PC?

I have a desktop PC (no wireless card), and I have a Linksys wireless router used for connecting a seperate laptop to internet. If I get an Airport Express, will it be possible to run airtunes to home stereo from my desktop PC? The PC is connected to the wireless router, but I guess it's not really part of the "network." Please excuse my ignorance.

Will the AirTunes software walk me through this process?
Sort of, but try using the following as a guideline ...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Cisco RE1000 WiFi extender ethernet port question

Good morning - I have a RE1000 WiFi range extender which is unable to reach the far end of my house, an old barn with a thick stone wall in the middle (& the ADSL line enters at the other end of the building). I have tried various extender locations on both sides of this internal stone wall without consistent success.
A simple solution - IF the ethernet port is two-way - would be to run a 100ft long exterior Cat5 ethernet cable from my existing router to the far end of the house, into the RE1000 as its feed (as opposed to the RE1000 trying to pick up the WiFi signal from the router) & then any WiFi device at that far end of the house could connect via the WiFi signal from the ethernet-powered RE-1000.
Will this work, ie. will the RE1000 accept the ethernet signal as its source and transmit it onwards via its WiFi capabilities (or is the RE1000 ethernet port's only purpose to transmit wirelessly-received signals to a wired, non-WiFi-capable device ?) ?

The use of Ethernet port in RE1000:
"> Ethernet  (green) Using Ethernet cables (also called network
cables), this Ethernet port connects Ethernet network devices
    to your wireless network.
The green light turns on when an Ethernet device is connected
and active on this port. The light flashes when the extender is
sending or receiving data over the Ethernet port.

  • Share internet from Ethernet port on Mac mini

After moving houses, I don't have any land line with internet. I have now got mobile internet from Vodafone connected to my Mac mini. This I share over the ethernet port and feed into my Airport extreme base station (AEBS) WAN port.
Also, my blackbook is connected to the AEBS via ethernet cable. Iphone and Ipad to be connected over WiFi.
Mobile internet > MacMini USB > MacMini shared ethernet > AEBS > Blacbook >> iPhone & iPad.
What is the best way to set up AEBS? To share a public internet address? As a brigde? To distribute a IP range?
And also what IP ranges AEBS would work on as default.
Also: the shared ethernet port on the Mini, should that be configured by DHCP or some other way. Now it says it has a self assigned IP and may not be able to connect.
I have tried a lot, but I am not a network savy person.
Any help and suggestions are welcome.

  • Airtunes over Ethernet?

I have an Extreme wireless network and a new Express with 802.11n. They're connected to each other via Ethernet to create a roaming network, which means the Express is operating in bridge mode. Everything works. I can stream Airtunes beautifully over the wireless network.
I also have an older iMac without an Airport card. It's connected to network's wired LAN and it works fine on the network. Is it possible to use it as a music server over the wired LAN? iTunes Preferences > Devices is set to look for Airtunes connected speaker.
Everything is on the same subnet.
I have read of a setting in my Express to allow Airtunes over Ethernet but the selection isn't there in Airport Utility.
    So, is AoE possible?

Apparently AoE is enabled by default. Airtunes works fine over the wired LAN.
    Airtunes without the Air. Hmm...

  • Wrt54g - no wired connection - cannot find ethernet port upon setup, cannot get wired connection

I've had my wrt54g router for a little over 1 year.  I had to get support to set up the router initially b/c it could not find the ethernet port when I tried to set it up initially.  I am past that date and recently had to move the router and the PC.  When I tried to redo the setup same issue - i upgraded the firmware and same issue.  If i uplug the router and plug the cable directly from the cable modem into my pc, everything works well, but when i try to set up a wireless connection, the wired connection goes down, but the wireless connection works and i cannot get the wired connection back up.  i am a novice with the device, so any detailed help in trouble shooting the problem and getting me back up on both a wired and wireless basis would be appreciated.

As you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30 seconds and configure the router from the scratch.Make sure that the Modem is connected to the router on the internet port and the computer to the router on the ethernet port.
Also check the ip address you are getting on the computer hardwired to the router...Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, try to open the setup page..

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • Airport Extreme - creating a wired local network from a cellular hotspot without ethernet ports?

Forgive the book I've written below, please. I generally think too much info is better than not enough... I'm looking for assistance and/or suggestions since I have been unable to locate solutions on my own so far. Searching this forum has found a great number of "sort-of" related things, but all of them so far appear to involve apple-only hardware or upstream network devices which have ethernet ports. Nothing that seems to match my situation enough to extrapolate out. Maybe I'm just using the wrong keywords. Anyway....
I've recently moved to a particularly rural area with no wired internet access to speak of (well, I suppose there is dial-up, but... yeah). I've tried several different wireless varieties including satellite, the AT&T Elevate 4G hotspot and a service that used an EVDO-cellular solution(a sprint-based reseller).  The former had serious latency issues which I had predicted and so was right-out. The last had signal coverage problems which their maps did not accurately reveal. Their potential mitigation was to have me invest even more money into a super-mega antenna to be roof-mounted. And even that was an uncertain fix. The AT&T solution with the 4G hotspot has been AMAZING so far and I love it. Coverage is great, latency and bandwidth fantastic.
I love it but for one exception, that is. Connectivity options.
There is a particularly limited number of WiFi connections available and only a USB network adapter for a single computer. None of my wired-only network devices can connect directly and I have significantly more WiFi connected devices in general use than the device supports.
I have an Airport Extreme that I was using as my primary connection point through a FiOS router at my previous home(and both the satellite and EVDO modems at the new place). Never had any problems with it when feeding its WAN port with one of the various routers' LAN ports. However, as has been evident by reading all sorts of posts here and elsewhere, having it connect via WiFi to the Elevate means that the ethernet ports are disabled. Not terribly useful.
The Elevate has no ethernet ports. Only WiFi and USB network connectivity.
The Elevate does not appear to have settings available to create a WDS network-- so it cannot be "Extended" via those methods, either, as far as I am able to tell.
So these are some thoughts I've had. Before I invest the time and money into them(both of which are in extremely short supply lately), I'd like to know if anyone else has already solved the issue or can tell me definitively whether these ideas, or some I haven't thought of, will or won't work. Any helpful feedback or thoughts would be sincerely appreciated.
Options I've considered, but are uncertain:
-A Wifi/Ethernet or even ethernet-only router which has a USB WAN uplink(I've had a few bites on searching, but nobody seems 100% clear on the capability for the models I've located). I could plug the Elevate into that USB port and then from there I'm golden. If this is the best option, then can someone recommend a brand/model that they know will work in this way?
-WiFi Access Point (Airport Express, maybe?) that will connect to the elevate via WiFi, and then use its single Ethernet port to serve as the APExtreme's WAN uplink. (I don't know if this will work at all, actually...)
-Connect to the computer via USB, run some kind of network bridging software (which I don't know what the heck that would be) to bridge between the USB Network and the Ethernet port, then run a hard wire from there to the APExtreme's standard ethernet WAN uplink. This is going to be a "last resort" option since it involves software I'm unfamiliar with, even unsure of availability for Mac, and requires the computer to be running and configured properly at all times. Given the way my kids abuse a computer, I can't be certain of anything involving this option.
-Some secret method of turning on WDS capabilities in the Elevate which would then allow my existing base station to become a second node in the chain. I really wish someone could tell me this is possible if only I'd push the right buttons. I see this is as the absolute best option, if it can be done. Cheapest, anyway.
    Current set-up:
    AT&T Elevate 4G hotspot
WiFi connected devices(rotating since Wifi connection count is limited): Mac PC, 2 iPads, 3 iPhones, Apple TV, a Nokia mini-tablet, a Kindle fire, Wii, XBox 360, an old dell laptop issued by my office.
    Apple Aiport Extreme base station
Wired connections: blueray player, television, satellite TV pay-per-view uplinky device thing.
    Please, tell me your thoughts?

Had the same issue here.  Here is the best solution I have found so far:
Hotspot + Pepwave Max On-The-Go (w/ Load Balancing) + Airport Extreme
I have a VZW MiFi, but I believe this set-up will work with other hotspot devices.  I actually have 2 MiFi Hotspots with a monthly allowance of 20G each.  They are plugged directly into the Pepwave router (aka, tethered).  (Note:  you have to have the right cable to do this.  The one that came with my Hotspot was only for charging.)  If, for some reason, you cannot tether with your Hotspot device, you want a router that offers WiFi as WAN.  The Pepwave will do this.  The Pepwave is connected to my Airport Extreme via ethernet cable.  I have the WiFi on the MiFis and the Pepwave turned off.  So the only visible network is my Airport Extreme.  The Pepwave is essentially just functioning as a modem.
I used to have a Cradlepoint, but I did not find it very user friendly--too complex for home use.  The Pepwave Max OTG is awesome.  I got the one with Load Balancing so it allows you to connect up to 4 cellular devices.  If you only need the one Hotspot, you can just get the cheaper Pepwave Max OTG.  The Pepwave allows me to run off one of the MiFis until I hit my 20G/month allowance, then it automatically switches to the other one.  That way I never max-out on my monthly data allowance.  Additionally, it gives you a real-time, hourly, daily and monthly running tally on data usage.
The guys at the 3Gstore are excellent and can help you figure out the best solution for your situation.

  • Forcing a Mac with 2 connected ethernet ports to use one over the other

I have a G5 Quad and a Mac Pro that are connected to a large network (including internet) on ETHERNET 1, and they are also directly connected over ETHERNET 2 (using Jumbo Frames). I need to ensure the G5 uses ETHERNET 2, and not ETHERNET 1, to connect to the Mac Pro. They must use both connections. How do I do this?
    Tim

I've solved the problem. When connecting to the other computer, don't map the drive from the Finder sidebar. Instead, go to the Finder, hit Cmd+K, or select Go > Connect to Server..., then type the IP address of the other computer's ethernet port that you are directly connected to. Then write an Applescript to automatically mount the drive on startup.
    Example Applescript:
    +mount volume "afp://192.168.1.1/"+
Compile and Save the script as an Application with none of the Options checked. Place the script on the remote computer (the G5 Quad in my situation) in a suitable location like the Documents folder for your Username.
Next, on the remote computer, open System Preferences > Accounts, and select the correct account. Select the Login Items tab, and click the + to add your Applescript application to the list. After adding the Applescript, check the Hide checkbox so the script runs in the background. Close System Preferences and you're done. Reboot the computer to verify it connects, and voila!

  • "Enable AirTunes over Ethernet"

Checking the "Enable AirTunes over Ethernet" box in the Music tab in the AirPort Utility has been suggested as a solution to my problem below:
have iTunes on a PC (no wireless card) connected to an AirPort Extreme base station via an ethernet cable. I have an AirPort Express connected as a client to the AirPort Extreme's wireless network. The AirPort Express is also connected via mini to RCA cord to my stereo. I would like to use AirTunes to stream music from iTunes on the PC to the stereo, but can't seem to figure out how to do it. Any thoughts?
But, I can't seem to locate it in the Music tab. Any thoughts? Is it not an option in the newer software (firmware?)?

This suggestion from MacFixit and an upgrade to iTunes 7.7.1 solved the inability to stream music to an Airport Express from iTunes on an ethernet-connected computer.
Music will not stream through AirPort Express Some users have reported that streaming music through AirPort Express units fails after the update. The most common fix for this issue involves changing your IPv6 settings. In order to change this setting, open System Preferences then the Network pane and click on your currently used interface (Ethernet, AirPort, etc.). Click on the TCP/IP settings for the interface -- at the bottom if you see a button which says 'Configure IPv6...' click it make the setting "Off." Press the Apply Now button.
