Airtunes - playing internet music on through Itunes?

I have several airport express units hooked up to speakers and I regularly use Itunes to play music on them. Both from albums I have purchased at the Itunes store and from radio stations that are present in Itunes. I would like to play music or sounds that I hear on the internet on my speakers and know that this should be feasible to do so. Can you do this and if so how do you go about it? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

It's called Airfoil

To be honest, it's great! I've always wanted to use Airport Express for more than just music now I can!

  • Is it possible to play sound on airtunes when watching music vid on iTunes?

I can't get it to work, even though it comes up as an option.
So when I play a music video on iTunes from my MBP and click on the airplay option, the sound will come through the speakers I have plugged into my airport express, but the video freezes.
    Am I missing something?
If I try this on my iPad, it works fine i.e. the video plays on the iPad and the sound comes out of the speakers connected to the AE.
Everything is up to date, in terms of the latest iTunes version, Snow Leopard and firmware updates etc.
    Any tips/tricks gratefully received.

    Yes, but there's issues...

Music can be re-downloaded in some countries - does music show under the Purchased tab under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes (re-downloading) ? If it does then you can re-download them for free (though not all purchases may still be the store). If you are not in a country where music can currently be re-downloaded and you don't have a backup then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

  • Playing Xmas music remotely through Mac Mini & TV (iTunes? Airplay?)

    Hi --
In anticipation of the holiday season I would like to configure our house to play music throughout various rooms from a central iTunes source. We have a Mac Air with speakers in the kitchen, and an Airport Express in the dining room with speakers attached that also plays the same music from the Mac Air in the kitchen. We have a Mac Mini in the living room hooked up to a Samsung HDTV, and I would like to similarly play the music from the Air on that Mac Mini + TV combination, but can't figure out whether that is possible.
The iTunes on the Mac Mini recognizes the iTunes instance running on the Mac Air, but as far as I can tell that only lets me access the music library on the Mac Air, i.e. it would require separately triggering the iTunes playlist from the living room, rather than centrally from a single iTunes instance. The Mac Mini is connected through Cat5e to our network, and we don't have an Airport Express nearby, else I would pipe the music through the AE.
I would prefer that the music source be iTunes on a Mac Air in the kitchen, but could probably make a centralized iOS app work instead if needed. Either way, is it possible to use this Mini + TV set up as a music receiver, playing music through the TV speakers? E.g. make a Mini behave like a set of remote speakers? Or an Airplay client?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ramon
P.S. Please let me know if this post is better suited to another forum -- given the mix of technologies at work I wasn't sure where to start...

iTunes itself does not act as an AirPlay receiver only a transmitter. There is at least one hack to make a Mac act like an AirPort Express i.e. an AirPlay receiver and this is called ShairPort (or MacShairPort for the Mac version).
The official and easy solution would be to get another Apple AirPort Express or an Apple TV2 and set it up as a second destination. Or if your wanting to go all the way, get several Sonos ZonePlayers as that is the Rolls Royce solution for doing a multiroom audio setup.

  • TV Shows and Music purchased through iTunes doesn't work on my iPhone

When I play some of the music and tv shows purchased through iTunes on my iPhone, it would play for around 30 seconds for music and anywhere from 5-20 min for the shows, and then either go to the next song, or stop playing the video for no reason.
It seems to be a specific spot which "crashes" the song, because say the song or video stops at 2:31, I can seek to "2:33", and the song/video would play normally, and not crash.
    What's the reason for this?

Contact Apple and report a problem via your *purchase history*. Either from the iTunes store, or the email receipt they send.

  • Playing a .cdr file through iTunes

I have a .cdr file of a movie that I want to play on my tv through my apple tv but I can't import the .cdr file into iTunes.  How can I play the movie on my tv?

Since both iTunes and WMP are having trouble with playback of the CD, it is likely it is not burning correctly. Try the burn one more time with CD Text turned off and the burn speed set to 2X, and see if that helps.

  • Each player plays my music, not just itunes

    hi
i use a network storage for my music
players like vlc or vox etc. play the music immediatly
    itunes won't play !
not by clicking the mp3 in the finder, nor by adding the mp3 to my library
i re installed itunes, rebootet everything i found - nothing
    please help me
    thanks

Then it's probably a characteristic of the encoder resulting in this.  Not too much you can do about it other than transcode (preferably not) or recode.  You can see if it's a header issue.  I'm not sure if MP3 Scan & Repair works under new system versions but you could let it have a go.  There's a few other utilities too but the free ones won't work on newer machines.  MP3Trimmer has a repair tool too but I don't know if it's restricted to paid version.

  • What causes CD's played in combo drive through iTunes to skip?

When I play an audio CD in my eMac combo drive through iTunes, just about every disc I play skips? When I play them on my home stereo CD player or my DVD player in audio mode they all play fine. What could be causing this?

    Hey Matt,
Some of my CD's have slight surface flaws, but the oversampling by the combo drive should take care of that. It does in my video DVD-in-audio-mode player and in my home stereo CD player which does 4x oversampling.
Songs in iTunes do not skip. The skipping is also not the "Max Headroom" type of digital stuh-tuh-tuh-tuttering. It is more like the audio intermittently cutting in and out.
I did some more troubleshooting and discovered that part of the problem was a loose connector. The 3.5mm plug from my external speaker system was not making good contact with the audio out port on my Mac.
The other part of the problem I discovered was that in one of the CD's I was listening to the recording has a sampled vinyl LP in it. The original LP had slightly audible surface scratches on it, and the original analog tape studio recording had dropouts in it. It just sounds real different when played on my Mac through my Klipsch speakers. Here's to that old audio engineering trick where the recording studio mixdown is done through Yamaha studio monitors with the idea that if the engineer can make Yamaha studio monitors sound good, the recording will sound good on everything else. The audio engineer on the Cinematic Orchestra CD titled Every Day apparently didn't use Yamaha nearfield studio monitors
After jiggling the audio connector, Genesis' Selling England by the Pound sounds fantastic once again. Thanks for your input, it helped point me in the right direction. I'll also try cleaning the contacts on my Mac's audio out port with some contact cleaner.
    Thanks,
    John

  • Why isn't ATV able to play my movie rental through iTunes on my Mac?-I can see it on ATV through the computer icon but it won't play.

So I've had my Gen 2 ATV for a little less than a year..it's been great...up to last week!  Now nothing downloads and all I get is ''able to view in 90 hours...all week it's not gone under 70 hours.   So I went to Itunes on my Mac and downloaded it again thinking it should show up as a rental through the computer on ATV..it does it's right there...but can I play it?  Heck no!  First it gets the icon showing its buffering..or whatever it's doing and it just stays there doing nothing..then I tried it again an hour later and I get an error message that I need to authorize my computer....I go back to check in Itunes and of course the computer is authorized.
I've just spent $12 on the same movie trying to get it to work and I'm just so over reading in all the forums but finding nothing that will fix this issue.  Does Apple even care?  Sooo many people with problems and no help to fix the issues.  THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY INTERNET CONNECTION!
How about Apple just fixing whatever it is that's wrong?  I can only think it has something to do with the last update I did since nothing has worked properly with movies since then.

    Hello there, Abigail.
It sounds like you are unable to watch an HD download becuase of the message saying that your display must support HDCP. The following Knowledge Base article offers up nformation on why this message can pop up:
iTunes for Windows: Unable to view or play HD video content that requires HDCP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3354
High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is a security feature requiring the use of HDCP certified products in order to display digital media like High-defintion (HD) video. In iTunes for Windows, in order to view HD content, both the display hardware (computer screen, LCD, external monitor, and so on) and video card driver must support HDCP. For additional information on purchasing and viewing HD Videos, refer to iTunes: Purchasing and viewing HD Videos.
If you want to download the SD version you can do so from Purchases in iTunesas shown by this article:

Click iTunes Store near the top of the iTunes window.
Click the Purchased link at the right of the iTunes Store homepage (below Quick Links).
In the page that appears, select a category.
iTunes shows you which of your purchases are available for download. You can view all of your past purchases, or just the ones not currently in your iTunes library. Items already in your library aren’t available for download.
If you select Music, you can view your purchases by song, artist, or album. If you’re viewing by album, click an album to see which songs on it are available for downloading.
To search for an item, type its name or a keyword in the search field, and then press the Return key to view your search results.
To download an item, click its Download button .
Be sure to uncheck the Download HD When Available in the lower right corner before downloading the movie.

  • How do I configure my TC such that when wired to my router a) I can back up, b) sync the TC with my SONOS to play stored music held in iTunes, c) display my photos using iPhoto on my TV

The current set up is that I have my home network both in wired and wireless mode. All MACs are connected wireless through the dual band router  (2.4 GHz) and have access to a wireless shared printer. I have also wired connected my TV through the router to access the Internet. I have an Apple TV wireless linked to the router (5 GHz) to play films on the TV
There are a few things I want to do.
I want to store my music and photos on the TC such that I can a) play music on any laptop, via the SONOS system or TV
I want to configure my SONOS bridge to be able to recognise that music is on the TC or pull music via Spotify
I want to be able to play music stored on the TC or display photos stored on the TC on the TV
I want to extend the network of the router without creating a new network
    Any suggestions ?

If you store itunes andn iphoto library on the TC you could be in trouble. The TC has no auto backup mechanism.. it is simply unable to work as a true NAS. It has no media servers. It is slow.. it is very easy to corrupt libraries especially in connection over wireless. In general we recommend people do not do this.
If you go ahead anyway.. apple have specific instructions for moving the libraries.. do follow it.
I am not sure if the SONOS can play directly from itunes library or has to use an itunes server.. remember the TC is a dumb as a board router with no media servers. Apple TV also need an active itunes to work AFAIK.. you cannot play files.. unless you JB the ATV.
Also be careful as SONOS does not like apple names.. use all SMB compatible names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
Finally yes,.. at last .. you can extend the wireless in the TC using another apple router.. you cannot extend wireless using any other brand.
