Airtunes speakers "being used by someone else"

Hello. I have an Airport Extreme running a WDS, and an Airport Express as a remote basestation on that network. Everything works fine, except that, as of last week, choosing the Express' remote speakers in iTunes results in the message that they are "being used by someone else."
I have tried everything I have read in the forum, to no avail. My firmware is up to date. I have the latest iTunes (6.0.1). I'm running 10.4.2. I have set the Express back to factory default, and set it up again fresh. I have renamed the Airtunes speakers. Nothing does any good.
The story is this: a couple of weeks ago, our receiver blew out, and we took our system apart for repair. At that time, Airtunes was working perfectly. We got the receiver back, fixed, and reinstalled everything this past weekend. Airtunes gives me this error now. We have a TiVo Series 2 box plugged in to the Ethernet port of the Express, and it is networking fine. I have not installed the TiVo Desktop software, so my Mac running iTunes should not be confused about where it is sending audio.
My only thought is this: Airtunes settings include the checkbox to enable Airtunes over Ethernet. This choice, while enabled, is also grayed out, so I can't turn it off (I'm told this is part of the WDS or something?) Could the Express be confused, with something plugged into the Ethernet port, thinking that this is using the speaker setup?
I tried running iTunes with the TiVo unhooked from the Ethernet port, in fact, I tried it right after factory resetting the Express (I never plugged the Ethernet jack in) but it still gave me the "being used by someone else" error.
Can anyone help?

Well, I am glad to hear that it isn't the settings, nor the TiVo plugged in. But that does leave me in a state of limbo, eh? To reiterate, I have restarted the iTunes running Mac (we also have an iBook, but it has been shut down for all these tests), and I did factory reset the Express.
Would it help to factory reset the Extreme? I wouldn't think so, it having nothing to do with Airtunes... but I'll try anything.
I've seen in other threads that iTunes 5 appeared to produce this effect for some people... (though the majority of them were streaming fine and then would suddenly lose their speakers, whereas mine never make an initial connection...) could it be that iTunes 6 and 6.0.1 are doing it to me? There was no posted resolution for those other people, so I don't know if they had their issue solved.

    Using iTunes 10.0.1.22 on Windows XP. Have Airport Express hooked up and am using the latest updates to AE. Was able to connect iTunes to AE just fine until I updated iTunes to 10.0.1.22. Now, I keep getting the error message "the remote speaker is currently being used by someone else. please select another speaker from the bottom of the iTunes window." I don't have another speaker, just Computer and the AE (which is connected to a receiver connected to speakers). I was able to listen to my iTunes library thru iTunes or Pandora with AE. I can still listen to Pandora, but every single time I try to listen to iTunes I get the same error message. I've been debugging this for 2 weeks to no avail. I've contacted RogueAmoeba and they have been great trying to help, but nothing works. I'm beginning to think this is an Apple/iTunes problem/bug.
    In iTunes-Preferences-Devices, I do have "Look for remote speakers connected with Airplay" checked and "Allow iTunes control from remote speakers" checked which is supposed to allow you to control iTunes with a third-party remote connected to AirPort Express. I admit I'm not sure I understand Airplay and how it works or not works with Airport Express. I'm connected wireless to AE and my computer.
    Any ideas what's wrong...this is driving me nuts and I miss my music!

    Then in that case since you get audio when the Apple TV is used with other devices I have to assume the problem lies with the receiver and with a little luck is nothing more than a setting.
    The message about the speaker being used by someone else is interesting and possibly related possibly not. That message will appear if the Apple TV is already playing something and you try to play something else by Airplay. I assume when the Apple Tv is connected to your receiver you receive the message all the time, even if you play something from the Apple TV and let it finish. What about when you connect the Apple TV to another device, under what circumstances do you get the message then.

    Replaying to myself, I found what was causing the problem.
    I have an Ubuntu machine and I was making some test to stream to Airport Express from Ubuntu.
    Under Pulseaudio preferneces I had checked "Make discoverable Apple Airtunes sound devices available locally" for tests some months ago.
    Unchecking it solves the problem.

    I hope someone can tell me the preferred way to get passed this message in respect to connecting to ATV speakers via iTunes on the computer.
    I want to use multiple speakers via iTunes in my computer.
    But when I try to connect to the speakers assigned to the ATV, I get the above "The remote speaker [name] is currently being used by someone else" message.
    What do I need to do (in the ATV) to make the speakers accessible when this happens?

    did you buy the device at Amazon or at Amazon MarketPlace? I think you bought a used phone at the MarketPlace. You have to contact the seller and tell them to call T-Mobile to have the PIN released.

    The video orientation is included with the video's EXIF data and the same for photos. It is that state of the art OS your computer is running that doesn't recognize or completely ignores the EXIF orientation data.
    This link applies to photos but whatever Windoze application you are using to view videos should provide the same or similar.

  • Remote speakers in use by someone else

    I have a Linksys WRT54G router, and 2 airport express. I have set up a WDS network with the linksys as the main router. I have the DD-WRT v23 firmware for my linksys. The network is working fine (ie the green lights are on the airport express). My computer is a Mac Mini Dual core. All firmware and software is up to date.
    I can stream music to both airport express. However, every once and a while iTunes will stop playing music spontaneously, and then give a message that "Remote speaker is in use by someone else". This is easy to remedy, I just have to Pick "computer", start music playing on the computer, and then repick the remote speakers and they start up. However this is really annoying if you are trying to listen to music.
    Does anyone know what the real cause of this is? My network is setup correctly. The Apple support document 303125 address this issue but really just tells you to setup your network correctly (which I think mine is).
    Could the problem occur when the lease runs out on an IP address and something gets reassigned by the DHCP (ie the Mac mini goes from 192.168.1.107 to 192.168.1.102) and things get confused? I am suspicous this maybe the cause but I don't know enough about networking to figure it out.

    My email address is showing up on rejected emails that I have no clue about. I would like to speak to someone from APPLE Email about this. other than just deleting which is becoming a MAJORLY pain to do with the volume, 50 at a time show up. The address being sent to "did not originate" from my address book.

    Look at the source of some of those messages  (View/Message/Raw Source).  It might give you a better idea about where they originated and where they've been. If it looks like they are originating from your computer, you might have a problem.
    It is a simple matter to spoof someone else's email address or use a fake email address.  I've received spam that was ostensibly from myself and I am always receiving spam from random but real-looking email addresses. If a rejection is sent to the "originating" email address, I imagine that would go to the spoofed address.

    I recently set up a sub account in my married name (my primary email was in my maiden name) which was verified and i have been using this for about two weeks now.  This week i have started getting friend requests from Bebo for someone else with the same name who is using my email address as theirs.
    Is it possible that BT have duplicated the same email address so that both of us have the same email? if so wouldn't i have received a lot more emails from random people.
    i'm concerned that i might have "stolen" someones unverified email address but even so the only emails i have received are ones that i know about.

    It isn't possible to have duplicate email addresses.
    To be honest, I'm not sure what you mean when you say "verified" - there is nothing to verify. As soon as you add the account via the portal login, then it is yours.
    Don't forget, as you mentoned people have the same names, and your email address may be without "periods", yet another of the same name may have an email address *with* a period between the firstname and surname (or of course visa versa).
    There is frankly not a lot you can do abour it, apart from either ignore the requests or complain to Bebo in case they can track the user who may be giving wrong details.

    I am receving ten emails a day from people I know saying they received a message from me including a virus.
    Here's one example:
    This message has been processed by Symantec's AntiVirus Technology.
    account6.pif was infected with the malicious virus W32.Sality.U and has been deleted because the file cannot be cleaned.
    Another from a friend:
    -Today we received an email from your address which contained a virus and was deleted.
    I have a .Mac account and it is not clear whether someone has accessed my email address and is sending emails using it, or whether somehow, a virus is being added to mail I am sending.
    What can I do please?

    More than likely what has occurred is a Windows user has been infected with a virus who has your email address in their email client's address book.
    Such a Windows virus sends an email with infected file attached to all contacts in the infected user's address book and randomly selects an email address from the address book to appear as the sending email address for the message or messages.
    All this occurs without the infected user's knowledge.
    This helps to enable the virus to spread quickly since most people are more likely to open an attachment received from someone they may recognize or doesn't appear to be send by a spammer and makes it more difficult to determine which Windows PC is infected and where the message or messages has originated.
    Unless you sent these messages including the attachment with the same file name indicated that was infected, what I provided has occurred. Although it is possible to receive a message with an attached file that is infected with a Windows virus and forward the message with attachment or save the attachment outside of the received message and attach it to a new message, a file infected with a Windows virus can have no effect on OS X with the exception of Office document macro viruses (which are no longer as common) but affect Office documents only with OS X.
