AirTunes Stream Re-caching or Dying

Hi, I've got a 15" MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) w/ 2GB RAM running OSX 10.4.10.
I'm streaming music to my home stereo via an Airport Express w/FWv6.3 which was working fine until around the time I upgraded OSX from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Everything else has remained unchanged.
Now the stream seems like it's constantly re-caching about every 10-30 seconds and playback on iTunes (v7.3.1) is jerky.
The seconds counter and playback will stop for a pause of 3-5 seconds and then restart for a few seconds and then stop for 10-30 seconds and then play again for another 30 seconds, etc.
Many times playback will just halt altogether. When I click play I'll get the "reconnecting" status and then playback may or may not start.
During these pauses my signal strength is fine, but I also notice that internet connectivity stops or drags too.
It's as if there's a network disruption despite that fact that signal strength is fine. This happens even if the PC is right next to the Airport Express.
Any Ideas?

15" MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10) iTunes v7.3.1, Airport Express fw v6.3
  Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I am definitely convinced that there was something in 10.4.10 (and probably the iTunes upgrade specifically) that screwed things up - because nothing else changed. I was getting ready to do some serious b1tching, but I seemed to have fixed it. Here's the changes I made (after 100 hard resets and reconfigs
In the AirPort Admin Utility:
1.) Under the AirPort Tab
1.1.) Multicast rate is set to 1
1.2.) Interface robustness is on
1.3.) Channel is set to "2" (basically I changed the channel)
1.4.) Mode is set to "g only" (if you have 802.11g of course)
2.) Under the music tab:
2.1) Enable AirTunes on this basestation is "on"
2.2) Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port is "on"
2.3) iTunes Speaker Name is set to "Living Room"
My AirTunes set up is that the AirPort Express is plugged in to an ethernet cable that runs directly to my wireless router and then there's an RCA cord which is plugged into my stereo of course.
I'm thinking that it's either the "living room" setting or the ethernet setting that changed things. I think the new iTunes software is where the problem came in and that maybe you have to name the speakers.
Good Luck! If you get it fixed, please post what your working config is in case my theory is crap. Thanks!

  • Apple TV sync disrupts AirTunes streaming to airport express

    Whenever my Apple TV is syncing with iTunes it disrupts my AirTunes stream to my airport express - the audio just stops playing.
    Is there a way to fix this? Perhaps slow down the Apple TV sync so it doesn't suck up all the bandwidth so my airtunes stream keeps playing? Not sure if that's really the problem though.
    Thanks for the help.

    Yes, they ditched this useful feature with AppleTV2.

  • AirTunes streaming with apps other than iTunes

    I love the Dashboard "Rabbit Radio" Widget, but why can't applications other than iTunes support AirTunes streaming? I 'd like to listen to Internet Radio through the $2000 sound system the computer is connected to (through the Airport Express). Dashboard, and other applications, need audio streaming capability, just like iTunes.
    It seems silly that we cannot do this. This also can be a problem with Safari as well, and other system-level or iLife applications...
    Also, the last time I checked, iTunes won't even stream music video or movie audio through AirTunes-connected speakers...

    Hi
    Airtunes is part of iTunes, it isnt really a stand alone app.
    If you dont mind paying a little, Airfoil is a great little app that allows you to stream from most other sources to your Airport Express.
    With regards to video/movie audio, it does tend to get out of sync when you stream to an AE!

  • AirTunes stream from & Connection accepted from

    I've just checked the log from my Airport Express to check whether it's only me who is using the internet and I found this two commands I don't understand what they means:
    May 25 09:53:37          Severity:4          AirTunes stream from fe80::21e:c2ff:fec3:b454%bridge0 started.
    May 25 09:53:39          Severity:4          AirTunes stream from fe80::21e:c2ff:fec3:b454%bridge0 stopped.
    and
    May 25 14:47:29          Severity:5          Connection accepted from [fe80::21e:c2ff:fec3:b454%bridge0]:51313.
    May 25 14:47:30          Severity:5          Connection accepted from [fe80::21e:c2ff:fec3:b454%bridge0]:51314.
    May 25 14:47:31          Severity:5          Connection accepted from [fe80::21e:c2ff:fec3:b454%bridge0]:51315.
    I would understand if there were some IPs or MAC addresses, but I don't understand "fe80::21e:c2ff:fec3:b454"
    Can someone explain it to me ... somehow understandable?

    I thought it might be AirTunes, so I've tried to play some music thru AirTunes and the log showed normal IP address (10.0.0.3 or so). So I don't think it's IPv6 format.
    And also if I understood correctly, the IPv6 doesn't work together with IPv4, so that's another reason why I don't think it's IPv6.

  • Why won't AirTunes stream without randomly dropping the connection?

    Here's the network setup I have in place: In our home office, I have 2 iMacs running 10.5.6 connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme base station. (They are also connected via AirPort, and everything works as expected if the ethernet cables are unplugged.) In my living room, I have an AirPort Express which is used primarily for my XBOX 360. The X360 is plugged into the ethernet port of the Airport Express. There is an audio out cable connected to the AirPort Express that runs to my amplifier. The X360 is connected to my amplifier via its own audio out cable. The AirPort network is configured as a WDS network, and both the Base Station and the Express are on software version 7.4.1
    Here's the first mystery: If I stream music from either iMac to the AirPort Express, the audio stream will drop at random intervals, while the music continues to play on the iMac. The stream will eventually restart, but the recovery time varies from seconds to minutes with no discernible pattern. Does anyone know why this happens? During the stream drops I have no problem controlling the iMac via Remote on my iPod Touch, which suggests there's nothing wrong with the overall AirPort network. The physical connection from the Express to the amplifier seems fine, and I've tested the cable with other equipment.
    Here's the second mystery: I have Connect360 installed on my iMac, so the XBOX can access my iTunes library. I can stream any of my iTunes playlists through the XBOX without the stream ever dropping out. How does the AirPort Express send a signal without interruption to my amplifier via the XBOX when it can't do the same thing via iTunes/AirTunes?
    I don't have any problems with the AirPort network generally, and the Express works beautifully with my XBOX for online gaming, so I am puzzled by the signal dropouts that occur only when I stream music via AirTunes to the Express.
    The XBOX interface is crummy for managing music when company is around for dinner since it requires the TV, but the elegance of being able to unobtrusively manage iTunes via AirPort and the iPod Touch is completely undone by background music that cuts in and out. I've been thinking about getting an Apple TV, but since it would be using AirTunes as well, I'm not convinced the situation would be any better.
    Is AirTunes dysfunctional, or is there something that I'm doing wrong? I've combed through the Apple discussion forums and it's clear that many, many people are having similar problems with AirTunes, but I haven't yet come across any solutions that decisively fix the issue. We all seem to have had many experiences of thinking we've finally solved the problem, only to find after 15 or 20 minutes of smooth playback the stream has dropped again.
    Any help or advice is welcome, there simply has to be an Apple solution of some sort if third party software using the same Apple network equipment can provide an uninterrupted stream from iTunes.

    @ Ralph. No. connections are fine. As indicated my iPad works seamlessly. And I've tried two 5's! Both do the same. I HATE not having the capacity to 'Listen Live' to public radio!

  • Airtunes streaming skips in iTunes 10 Mac but not iTunes windows

    I have had problems with airtunes for a fair while now, definately the whole time i've had itunes 10, but recently noticed that using the same computer (MBP booted to Windows 7 using iTunes Windows) it streams perfectly. So now I'm really confused. Help!
    Problem:
    Here is the problem. Mac iTunes 10, play music streaming to me Airport express, will start to play then stop, pause, start, pause, play.... aarrrggg. Doesn't matter which song.
    Environment:
    I have Airport Extreme connected to Linksys modem. Wireless g/n network connecting to Airport express which is hard wired to stereo. Wireless network is perfect except for this airtunes issue, and support various mobile devices plus n and g apple notebooks. My main computer is Macbook Pro with dual boot windows 7 and mac snow leopard. I've recently found that itunes only behaves badly in Mac mode!
    Diagnosis:
    Have tried switching wireless channel from 1, 7, 11 etc to remove interferrence - but identified that this does not remove the issue.
    Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes windows on same computer and works FINE
    Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes on iPhone 3GS with iOS5 and works about 50% (skipping, but not as bad as from mac, but unacceptable quality)
    Have tried streaming airtunes from iTunes on Macbook Pro with snow leopard and iTunes 10 and basically skips constantly

  • Airtunes Streaming Stopped Working w/ iTunes 10.1.1.4

    I use an Airport Extreme and two Airport Express devices to stream music throughout my house. The firmware on all three is up to date. With the release of iTunes 10.0, I could no longer stream music to my two remote Airport Express units. I received an "Unknown Error (-15000)" message. iTunes 10.1 fixed the problem and everything worked great. I just installed iTunes 10.1.1.4, and now I'm back to "Unknown Error (-15000)". All of the above applies to both Windows 7 and Mac OSX Leopard machines. Any idea how to work around the bug? Is a fix planned? Does anyone know how I can roll my installation back to 10.1? I don't have the original files. Thanks for your help!

    Did you ever figure this out or confirm that the version number is broken now?
    I had a party and told everyone to make sure to bring their iPhones with Apple Remote installed... nobody could see my iTunes DJ... very disappointing and frustrating... I know it was setup properly.  And everyone had the latest version of Apple Remote installed.
    It seems to work with iTunes 9.2.1 on OS 10.4.11 but not with iTunes 10.2.2 on OS 10.5.8.
    Yes, I know this is the Windows iTunes forum but this seems to be an issue with iTunes 10 for both Win and Mac.

  • Airtunes streaming no longer works since last update

    I have been using my Airport Express to straem Airtunes to my speakers for over a year. Immediately following my last software update, it no longer works. In iTunes, I can see the speakers, it just won't let me check them for use. The Express unit seems to be working properly and I have updated the firmware on it and the Extreme as well. Has anyone seen this behavior? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Marcello, I am having the same problem.  When following the advice of many in the community to start iTunes in 32-bit mode, I get the following error after I have done so:
    I am running 10.9.2 on a mac mini.
    I am hoping this will be fixed or at least a solid answer could be given that iTunes will no longer support certain types of media going foward.

  • AirTunes Streaming: Wired to Wireless

    I'm looking to use an AirPort Express to allow someone to stream their iTunes music from their wired-only G5 to their stereo in the living room. This person has a DSL router with Wi-Fi capabilities and, in fact, has a hotspot set up, for occasional use by her husband.
    My question:
    if I connect the AirPort Express to the existing hotspot in client mode, what are the chances that I can stream music from the wired G5 over the router to the stereo, going from wired to wireless. To my mind, as long as the G5 and the AirPort Express are all on the same subnet, this should work just fine. Put differently: if the router uses the same DHCP scope to dish out addresses for wired and wireless clients, I should be fine, right? Am I missing something?

    If the G5 is connected to the DSL router by Ethernet and the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is also connected to this same DSL router wirelessly, then yes, the G5 can stream iTunes to the AX.

  • Using AE as router and AirTunes streaming at the same time

    Hi,
    Hopefully quite an easy yes/no question here! Can an AirPort Express be used as both a router and for AirTunes simultaneously?
    Thanks,
    :-Joe

    Sure, as long as your printer is compatible. (You won't really know if that's the case unless you try).
    In case you run into difficulties with this, here is Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide for this.

  • How do I select to simultaneously stream (airtune) and play on my computer?

    Hi everyone. So I keep reading that as of last January '06 (6.0.2) iTunes will let you stream to remote speakers and play the same song simultaneously on the computer's speakers. How do I do this?!? I have searched everything and everywhere (these forums, macosxhints, the usenet forums) for over 30 mins now and no one mentions "how" to do it, just that it can be done. That is, once everything is setup, is there a mystery screen that says "click here for both at once"? Am I supposed to right click on anything in particular?
    iTunes only lets me select one at a time - on the bottom right of itunes, I have the box that lets me choose my remote speakers ("livingroomstereo") or my computer speakers ("computer"). But again, it only lets me click on one, not both...
    I have: iMac G4, iTunes 7.0.2. My airport express is at v6.2 firmware. I use a linksys wrt54g as my base, and the airport express works perfectly as a client.
    What is the mystery! I feel that something is missing since no one describe how to select multiple ones at once so that it must be totally obvious. And that leads me to beleive that I am not "missing" it, it just isn't there....
    Here is the useless Apple FAQ:
    Can my AirTunes stream play through my computer's speakers at the same time?
    Answer: Yes. With iTunes 6.0.2 or later, you can play through both the computer speakers and multiple remote AirPort Express units, provided that each AirPort Express has the latest AirPort firmware (available here). The maximum number of remote AirPort Express units is three to six in typical conditions. The number that works for you will depend on your environmental conditions (such as building composition and local radio interference), distance to the remote AirPort Express units, and available network capacity relative to your other usage.
    I hate things that tell you that you can do a particular thing, but then dont tell you how to, or at least don't tell you how to find out how to do it...
    Thanks!!!

    Ah man. thank you.
    I hope Apple fixes the indirect problem with their FAQ. On their faq (that I excerpted below) they provide a link to check and DL the newest software and firmware. I went through their "check" and gave me the thumbs up...
    Thank you for pointing out the problem..

    vielen dank.

    Deleting the full cache folder (_CACHE_* files and all subdirectories) in the location as found via about:cache should normally work without problems provided that Firefox isn't running when you delete the files.<br />
    You may have to delete the _CACHE_CLEAN_ file in the parent location as well.
    What kind of problems do you get if you delete the Cache folder?
    Note that Firefox wouldn't use the disk cache if you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the cache as you can see on the about:cache page, so you would have to clear the cache manually in Firefox.

    You can send any OS X audio stream through your AirPort Express using Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba software. It's $25 shareware, but that me be worth it to you if you want to broadcast audio from RealPlayer, Safari, etc.

  • Serialization Stream question

    Hi all
    We have a server client setup where teh client reads from an xml feed and then passes objects representing the xml along to the server, which processes them. So two JVMs running (each with 2 threads). We are using the standard socket/ObjectInputStream/ObjectOutputStream to transfer the objects.
    For some reason, after anywhere from 120-800 objects are sent, the threads with that handle the streams just seem to die. We are catching all exceptions that the sockets/streams can throw, and nothing occurs. Very strange. The thread in the server that receives objects (with getObject) dies first, then the thread in the client that invokes writeObject dies. I say "dies" but again, there is no exception/warning -- I just notice output stops...
    Do we have to flush() or drain() the streams at any point? Also, what would happen is the write thread invokes writeObject() and the reading thread does not readObject()? Are the objects stored in a buffer till some point, and then when its too big get some sort of exception?
    in client
    Socket socket = new Socket(hostname, port);
    ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(socket.getOutputStream());
    Serializable serializable = (Serializable)queue.dequeue();
    oos.writeObject(serializable);and in server
    ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(s.getInputStream());
    Serializable sez = null;
    while (true)
        sez = (Serializable)ois.readObject();
      // dies here after an if to test sez
    ...Thanx in advance

    java.beans.XMLEncoder. But it also uses Reflection.
    In either case the overhead is insignficant compared to the bottleneck imposed by the network.

  • Monitor streaming progress on client

    After thinking and taking in consideration suggestions on forum I decided not to use appv client gui on the machine.
    I have some debate about streaming time monitoring.
    Example O2013 takes about 15 minutes to finish streaming. Then when clicking Word icon the CHARGING bar appears.
    Personally. I don't see big inconvenience... I suggested to open Task manager after first login to machine added to OU with appropriate GPO and see processor activity. But at this time Windows also start to download Windows updates from the WSUS.
    I just got the answer to the question about placing a shortcut of the package elements on the desktop automatically from APPVMAN console...  This could be a real solution. The icon could be an indicator that streaming is started... and the app could
    be opened in 15 minutes.
    I guess it would right approach.
    What do you think?
    --- When you hit a wrong note its the next note that makes it good or bad. --- Miles Davis

    sorry, didn't mention what GPO I mean in my initial post. Sure it is APPV admx. And I publish Globally.
    See below a screenshot. I have only Publishing configured. No items in Streaming node touched.
    In my environment after adding the machine to AD, to the OU with APPV client configuration GPO applied, Office package is accessible about in 15 minutes. It is OK for a package of 2GB. Since we do not sequence Office package, it is configured for streaming
    and caching on local machine I guess.
    I just messed a bit with a term caching. After reading your post I believe I got it right. I thought that Streaming does placing the package on local machine and called it "copy". And when we first launch the app it will create some
    cache. I thought that the progress bar that runs some 15 seconds and appears just on first launch of Word creates the cache. My bad... Didn't read enough because have few projects at the same time.
    But my Appv system is clean and functioning well. Forum is a great help...
    In reality: the cache is fully streamed package. And in case of heavy APP like Office it not make sense to run the app from the network. So it is fully pushed into the machine's cache.
    I don't have autoload enabled but couple of small apps are loaded in cache without noticible delay from first start.
    Probably enable Autoload in  Streaming node will be a good idea.
    When package is fully cached what Charging bar means (what process is on background) during app's first start?
    Thanks for your time.
