AirTunes through existing third-party wireless network

Hello everyone,
I am thinking about purchasing an Airport Express mostly to use AirTunes.
The room where the AE would stay in is already well covered by two wireless devices (a D-Link wireless access point and a Netgear DSL router with a wireless access point built-in), so I'd rather not pull an ethernet cable to the AE.
The simple question is: does the AE have any option to connect to an existing wireless network? I don't need it to act as a repeater, it should just access the pre-existing wireless network as a "client" in order to be seen by iTunes.
Is this possible at all?
Thank you very much!

The simple question is: does the AE have any option to connect to an existing wireless network?
Yes, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can be reconfigured to "join an existing wireless network." In this configuration, is performs like any other wireless client to that existing wireless network so you can use it to share a USB printer or for iTunes streaming.

  • Connecting ibook g4 with third-party wireless network

i've got a ibook g4 with an airport extreme card that i'm trying to connect to a third-party wireless network. When i am right beside the router, it works at about 75%, but I walk 15 feet away and the signal is totally gone. the computer the router is hooked up to is a PC, and so are the other three computers in the house that access the wireless network. The PC's are all further away from the router, yet they can still get a basic signal. Why is my mac not working with this and what can i do about it?

You can verify that the antenna wire is properly attached to the AirPort Extreme card. See the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card.

  • Join third party wireless network

I have an AE, not (n), and would like to connect it to my working Thomson wireless router to be used as the iTunes streamer. What do I do? I have tried a few suggestions I found but what happens is that when AE is rebooting it freezes and then the computer can't find it and so on.

You will need to use the WPA/WPA2 Personal choice when you configure the AX, as this is the closest match to WPA Personal. This can get tricky because some routers use an AES setting associated with WPA and others use TKIP. Apple wants to see a TKIP setting, so make sure that your Thompson is configured this way.
Suggest that you start over fresh on the Airport Express (AX) and reconfigure it.
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AX as follows:
Power down the AX for a moment or two
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
Locate the AX close to your computer
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AX
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons
Name your device, assign a device password and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
    Wireless Mode...Join a Wireless Network
(If you don’t see this choice, hold down the option key on your computer as you click on the selection box)
Wireless Network Name...The name of the network you are joining should appear
Enter a check mark next to “Allow ethernet clients”
Security...Must match the exact security setting on your wireless network
    Password...password for the wireless network
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes
Click Update at the lower right of the window.
As soon as you see the message that the settings have been saved, close AirPort Utility and disconnect the ethernet cable. The AX will restart in 20-25 seconds.
If you get the green light, you can power down the AX and move it to the location where it's needed, but do not power it up yet.
Power down your complete network for a few moments
Start the modem first and let it run a few moments, then do the same with your wireless router, then the same with the AX, then the same with your computers.
If you need to make future configuration changes, temporarily connect the ethernet cable to the AX again and disconnect it when you have Updated the changes. This is a much more reliable method than wireless for the configuration process.

  • Third party Wireless Card on a Power Mac G5, bipro 1.8 GHz

Does anyone has a definite answer whether or not a TrendNet 403 PI+ PCI card would work or not along with my G5 bipro 1.8 Ghz (beginning 05- OS 10.3.9) ?
I have the same card installed on my B&W, which is recognized as an airport extreme card.
Installed into the G5, it is recognized by the hardware :
System Profiler says on Airport Card "Wireless Card Type : Third Party Wireless Card", but "Current Wireless Network : wireless network not available"
I have the 5 bars on airport icon, but they are grey
When I go to Other network and give the name of my network, it keep saying : "There was an error joining the Airport network".
Any clue why it works into my W&B (G4- 400 Mhz) and not into the G5 ?
    Thank's for any advice

  • Airport Extreme and third party wireless routers

I have a dual-band Airport Extreme that works well with all of my newer Macs. I have older laptops, however, with PCMCIA wireless cards that can't do WPA2-Personal security, only WEP. My only solution has been to set up a Guest network with no security. Is it possible to connect a third-party wireless router to the Airport Extreme that offers WEP security?

Are you trying to setup the Belkin router to use the same wireless network name as the AirPort Extreme network?
That would require that that the Belkin's network use the same security.
If this is the case, try setting up the Belkin with a different wireless network name. Unless the Belkin is really limited in features, you should be able to choose the type of wireless security to be used on this Belkin network.
If you can do this, "point" your WEP device at the wireless network that the Belkin is producing and the signal will bridge when it reaches the AirPort Extreme.
Regading your question about connecting a router to the ethernet port on a computer that is already setup for Internet Sharing...this is not likely to work. I very much doubt that you would be able to get an Internet connection with this type of setup.

  • Help With Third Party Wireless Cards

Hello, I am needing some help with third party wireless cards. I have purchased and installed the Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card into my G4. From what ive seen on the discussions page here, this card is known to work with the G4s in place of the more expensive Airport Extreme card. The only problem is that my G4 doesnt even recognize that the card is in the PCI slot. Ive tryed the other PCI slots and still nothing. Previously, i have tried using a belkin and a d-link card that have been known to work in the G4s as well, and had the same problem. I am 100% sure that the card is seated correctly, and cant think of any other reason why it shouldnt detect that something is in the slot. If anyone can inform me what im doing wrong, or has any info on how to get it working, that would be great. Thanks for your time,
    ~Jared
Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   2 gb ram, 200 gb hd, dual display

Yes, i run Digidesigns audio editing program called Protools on my Mac. It uses a PCI card to import mic/line audio signals into the program from the hardware interface. I tried moving the Digidesign card and putting the wireless card in the same slot, and still nothing, although the Digidesign card works fine in the other slots. Each time i moved the Digidesign card, it showed up in the different slots, although the ones that were open did not show up at all. Only the PCI slots that are in use show up in ASP on my machine. I have the FW-800 version of the G4, so im not sure if that makes any difference. I have never erased the PRAM before, would you be able to give me directions on how to do that? Thanks a ton for your help. =)

  • Third Party Wireless

    Hullo all,
Is there any way to connect a third party wireless device to a mac? Specifically I am talking about a MacMini G4 (bought june/july of 2005) using a Ashton Digital AirDash USB stick. I can plug it into my mini and it lights up but I am not sure how to make the mini utilize it. I have tried the IOExperts Drivers to no avail. I know the stick can be used my the mini (using KisMac) but I do not know how to use it to connect to the internet.
    Thanks for any help
    Tom Johnson

Alternitavely, you said that it works
with KisMAC, so you could try and find out what
driver KisMAC is using to make the card work and
    apply that driver.
This idea seems to be the best or rather the only one that will work, unfortunately I have absolutely no idea as to how to do it. KisMAC uses the USB PRISM II driver and only in passive mode. (I am not sure if that makes a big difference) Anyway I have no idea where OS X puts its drivers. I've looked in the console application and it calls the drivers USBIntersilJack and specifically uses the lines:
2007-03-11 23:29:01.966 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack is now ready to start working.
    2007-03-11 23:29:02.307 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack: Detected a Prism2 card
    2007-03-11 23:29:02.345 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack: Firmware vendor 31, variant 6, version 1.5
    2007-03-11 23:29:02.346 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack: MAC 0x0 0xa 0xe9 0xa 0x81 0x79
    when it is loading.
You need to find a Mac Compatible driver. If there is
one for the usb stick, it will probably be on the
    Ashton website.
As for finding a mac compatible driver i think chances are nil. I've tried everything from open source to the DLink 1.47 driver. Either they do not work or I am to noobish in this area to know how to get them to work properly.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks
    Tom

  • Connect AE to third party wireless router

    Hi all,
Here's what I'm trying to do:
I have a Airport Extreme base that I want to connect to a non Apple wireless router (ISP wireless router). Anybody managed to do that?
I tried setting up the base as WDS connnecting to my third party wireless router but without any success. I can make all the connections, save my AE settings, but when I choose the newly set AE Base, I'm not connected.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    g

Most likely not, as very few non-AirPort routers can be extended with the AirPorts in a WDS. (ref: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php?title=WDSLinked_routernetwork)
You can, however, connect the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to most non-AirPort routers, via Ethernet, and then set up the AEBS as a bridge.

  • AirTunes on Express, 3rd Party Wireless

    Hi all,
I just purchased a refreshed AirPort Express. What i am trying to do is get it to connect to my 2Wire wireless DSL base station and use AirTunes (and maybe even print).
My 2Wire System has no WEP or WPA protection (my nearest neighbor is a mile away, so i am not worried about it). In the AirPort Admin Utility, I have it set to "Join an Existing Wireless Network" and that works just fine. I can get it to connect and i can see it when i look it up through the 2Wire.
My Problem is, that when i Bring up iTunes, it doesn't give me the bar to choose where I want the audio to go.
I tried opening up the UDP port (5353?) and i still had no success. Then i tried setting the Express up as a DMZ (no firewall) still nothing.
anyone have any clues on how to get this to work?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    More Info
    Alright. Fiddling around some more:
I can get the printer to work (in Client or Home Router Mode).
and I CAN get airtunes to work, but only when it is in the Home Router Mode (and i connect to in in the airport menu)
    helpful?

  • How to integrate AT&T U-Verse with existing Time Capsule wireless network

I would like to switch from Comcast HDTV+Earthlink internet service to AT&T U-Verse, but it’s not clear to me how to integrate the AT&T system with our existing Time Capsule/wireless set-up. The TV (with cabled DVR) is in our family room; the Time Capsule, printer & iMac are in the study. Do I need to move the Time Capsule - so it is directly connected to the AT&T ‘gateway’ box via ethernet cable - or - can I just attach an Airport Express module to the modem/router box and leave the Time Capsule where it is? (I plan to turn off the wireless function on the AT&T device.)

No, we have a mix of 802.11g & 802.11n devises, so it looks like I will need to use the WDS option
Yes, this is your only option here.
can I 'create' a (Apple) WDS network rather than 'participate' in a (2Wire) network?
Maybe I am mistaken, but I sense that you may be thinking that you can somehow combine the 2 Wire and Apple networks together in a WDS setup. This is not possible since they are not compatible for this purpose.
You will configure the main Apple router to "participate in a WDS network". There is no other way to set it up if you want to use WDS. It will be configured as the "main base station" in the setup.
You could leave the 2Wire network "as is" and use it for guests or some other purpose. There is some concern though about having different networks in close proximity due to likely interference effects between the devices.
    (2) Can I use an Airport Express device in 'relay' mode and also use it to stream AirTunes to the stereo?
    Yes
I'm also wondering if the 2Wire device & the TC should have the same password and security (WPA2), so the NetQuakes seismograph in the garage can 'see' the internet through both devices. But perhaps a question for another day...
OK to use the same WPA2 Security, but having the same password for two distinct networks may cause some confusion.

  • Can I add an Airport Express into an existing Non Airport Wireless Network?

    Hi -
Is there any way I can add an Airport Express into an existing Linksys wireless (802.11g) network?. I would not mind switching completely over to Airport but I want to maintain a hybrid (part wired part wireless) configuration as I have now.
    thanks for any assistance!!

Hi skyelaird and welcome to the Discussions
Is there any way I can add an Airport Express into an
    existing Linksys wireless (802.11g) network?.
    Yes.
You would need to configure the Airport Express to join an existing wireless network (client mode).
In this mode you can share a USB printer and stream AirTunes, however the ethernet port would be inactive.

  • Airport with third party wireless router?

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers? I have Verizon FIOS and would like to use my Airport Extreme base station and Airport Express unit on my home network. I have successfully set up Airport Express in my office as a WDS. Can Airport Extreme base station be set up as part of a WDS?
    Thanks for any insights.

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers?
No industry-wide standard exists for WDS, so it is impossible to predict how Apple's implementation of it (or anyone else's for that matter) will interface with other equipment.
Wikipedia has a short but fairly comprehensive list of third party equipment that allegedly support WDS. Missing from the list is a Linksys access point, which I nonetheless successfully configured as a WDS remote station. They call it "repeater mode".
    Yes Verizon FiOS is absent.

  • Reach Airport Express from a third party Wireless base ?

    Hi all,
I recently got an Airport Express station from a friend who didn't need it anymore. Thing is, my Mac doesn't have an airport card. However, my Network is built around a US Robotics wireless ADSL router. This router is currently my gateway for LAN (there is a switch behind it, then all wired machines) and for wireless (802.11g station is built in the router).
So here is the trick : I'd like to install the Airport Express station in my living room and hook it to my Hifi system, then stream music from my Mac to my hifi. How do I do that ? Anyone has an idea ?
    Thanks in advance folks !
    G4MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hey ! I answered this myself. Just hook the base to the existing wired network with the included Ethernet port. Now run Airport Admin Utility, the base is seen. Now just configure it so it hooks to the existing wireless network, pop ethernet out, relaunch Airport Admin and boom (just like you usually say, Steve :o) ) it's there, joined through Wifi. Now I just went down to the living room, plugged it to my hifi system and played music.
    It's magic ! :o)
Plus I have a new wired access point in the living room, just in case...

  • Where are my Photos stored if I want to access them through a third party

    Hello!
I want to be able to back up my photos from the new Photos for OS X using a third party - such as Google+ Auto Backup.  I am trying to point Google+ to the source of my photos, but can not figure out where they are located in the Finder!! The option to point to the Photos app is greyed out and I don't seem to see anywhere else that the actual files could be stored. Are my photos stored anywhere that I can show Google+ Auto Backup? I would like to have it regularly backup my Photos, but can not find them!
    Thanks so much in advance!!!!

    Hi Terence!
Thanks so much for replying! I was hoping to backup the photos on an ongoing basis - something I'm pretty sure I was doing with iPhoto. As I would add new photos to my iPhoto library they would automatically backup for me through the Google+ app on my laptop (like an iCloud). If I export them, as you suggested, I would have to do that manually. Is there anyway to use a third party to backup Photos? I hope I'm making sense!!!
Thanks again - I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me!
