Airtunes with Airport Express - web with netgear DG834G?

i have a netgear DG834G router which i use to connect to the web (and if you're reading this is it is working . I want my Airport Express to play airtunes, whilst i browse the web. I cannot even get airport Express to join the netgear network (in fact the netgear network doesn't even appear in the airport admin utility list). Any one able to shed some light on what appears to be a simle problem?

Ok, let's double-check your AX's settings ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX

To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing Netgear wireless network>
Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

Airport Express cant use Netgear DG834G

Hi
Simple question really: Is I have an existing Wireless Network being supplied by a Netgear DG834G. I have an Airport Express Base Station that I want to extend the range of the existing network. I cant use the Ethernet option. I have tried to use WDS as a Wireless Bridge but the connection never happens. I am beginning to doubt if APX can be used with Netgear Wireless Routers wirelessly.
Is there is someone out there who knows differently or knows of a way to achieve this?

Connecting to AX is not a problem, its extending the existing wireless network by using it as a wireless bridge that is the problem. As a matter of interest do you have a solid green light on your AX?
I did achieve a solid green light but could never get on the internet. Checking the settings (DHCP > Wireles) and I never got a router assigned IP address, even if I used a fixed IP within the router range I got the same result. I’ve since tried it with other Netgear routers and it is as Duane posted. The only time it ever works is if you use the Ethernet cable and to configure the AX as a base station.
You can extend the range wirelessly using another AX (more than one if you like) with no problem at all if the first AX is connected to the router that connects to the internet using the ethernet port.

Can AppleTV be used with and like Airtunes and Airport Express?

So great! I can now play my music through my Home Cinema System on my TV but what about Airtunes? I have an Airport Express in my Studio and my Bedroom. Is there any way the Apple TV will act in the same way? Or can I select the other Airport Express Stations from AppleTV? If not are Apple planning on making this happen. I know it's early days for the AppleTV but they must have thought of this before hand? They did delay it's launch.

Currently there is no function to do that. I agree with you that this needs to be an added feature. Maybe the reasoning was that since the control for AirTunes is from the computer out to the remote speakers you would not need it with AppleTV since you control the content from there. Apple should have made the AppleTV not only a remote speaker but a remote controller. Maybe in the first update (PLEASE!).

Airport Express (n) joining Netgear (g) Router for AirTunes?

I've recently bought a new Airport Express (n) to use AirTunes in an additional room (I already use an older Airport Express (g) to do this in another room successfully).
Will there be problems connecting a (n) device to join a NetGear (g) network?
Currently the AirTunes plays music okay, but cuts out briefly every 30 seconds or so, whereas the old (g) AE is fine in the same room.
I wanted to know if I should update my main router to an (n)?

There shouldn't be. The AirPort Express (AX) will connect using 802.11g.

Airport Express and a Netgear Wireless network

Hi,
I am thinking of getting an Airport Express to be able to stream iTunes to my HiFi.
However I have an existing wirless network provided by a Netgear Wireless router / ASDL modem. I would like to keep the netgear as it provides my internet access.
Can an Airport Express live happily alongside the existing wireless network? Or would it create its own wireless network. Meaning my imac would either have to be on the internet (via the netgear) or the Airport Express network?
If it's a problem, does anyone have any alternative solutions?

I use a three+ year old Netgear DG834G as my wireless router and an Airport Express to stream to my hi-fi with no problems at all (apart from drop-outs when I use my microwave oven at the same time). Use the Airport setup app to configure the Express to 'join an existing wireless network' as a wireless client. It took five minutes. I've never had to reset it, either.

Streaming AirTunes to Airport Express via Extreme

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I've read thru multiple threads about this issue and done just about everything indicated with no luck. Used Airport Extreme for a wireless network with direct WAN connect to DSL and LAN to printer, wireless to the iMac and can connect fine with my PC notebook via the wireless network. I've tried to add Airport Express simply to stream AirTunes to the stereo system in the next room, but keep getting flashing amber on the Express. I've used soft, hard and factory resets, started over using Airport Utility to add the Express to the existing network, using the tech article cited in one of the streams. To avoid interference even tried setting it up plugged in next to the Airport Extreme. After factory reset the iMac can find the Express but when I try to add it to the existing network set up on the extreme it no longer finds it and the light starts flashing amber again. What am I missing here?

Hey guys - this is a bit of a detour form what we usually cover on the blog - but I just wanted to share this little trick I thought of for the iPhone.
I currently have movies added to iTunes on a Mac mini with a TB drive. I thought tonight - wouldn’t it be great if I could stream these to my iPhone - it should be easy right? It is…
Step 1
Open “Sharing” in System Preferences and enable “Personal Web Sharing” - this will turn on the built in web server installed with OS X. When enabled, it will display an address (your IP or computer network name) as the URL for accessing the site on your network. Note this address - we’ll be visiting it on our iPhone via Safari later.
Step 2
The root of the web site is located in /Library/WebServer/Documents.
Open the Terminal and type the following:
cd /Library/WebServer/Documents/
and press ENTER.
Step 3
Still in the Terminal we will continue by creating a Symbolic link to your iTunes “Movies” directory and place this link in the root of your web server by typing the following:
ln -s /[path ti your iTunes Movies folder] Movies
example: ln -s/Volumes/Machintosh HD/users/john/Music/iTunes/Movies Movies
Step 4
Open Safari on your iPhone and visit the address provided when you enabled the Personal Web Sharing in your iPhone followed by /Movies
Example: http://192.168.2.20/Movies/
You will be presented with a text directory listing of all of your iTunes movies. Simply tap on any movie link and it’ll launch QuickTime on the iPhone and play the movie - just like any other video streamed on the web.
Technically if your home internet connection has a high upload speed you could even stream your content over the internet - outside of your local network - assuming your ISP doesn’t block port 80.
Just thought I’d share that with you - it’s a quick and simple thing you can do with no special software required.

Take a look at Apple's documentation for the AirPort Express (AX) and you will see that wirelessly extending is only mentioned in the context of working with other Apple base stations.

Airport express 2012 and Netgear DGN1000 how do I change the settings

Hi.
I've recently got fibre Internet from BT and ditched the home hub in favour of the new Airport Express station due to home hub not supporting AirPlay.
So current setting is fibre modem to AExp and the AE provides e dual band wifi. However I found I needed more Ethernet ports.
I had an old Netgear DGN 1000 that I wanted to link via the Ethernet of AE to Netgear. I'm no network expert so I plugged in and tried changing some settings in the Netgear but to no avail. My AE is set up to allow network to extended.
So the new network i have consists of fibre modem cabled to AE cabled to Netgear. Due to me making too many changes to the netgear i had to do a hard reset using the pin hole on the bottom.
What I saw next really confused me. As the Netgear rebooted from the hard reset it connected straight to the AE and started acting as the switch I wanted it to. Both wired for PS3 and sky box and wireless. It all worked really fast.
My question is, was that supposed to happen and how do I see the Netgear router on the network as ideally I would like to go into router settings and turn off wifi.
Before when i typed 192.168.0.1 into a web page I could access the netgear settings but that no longer works.
When devices connect either wired or wless through the Netgear they get their ip from the apple unit.
It is as if the Netgear is there acting as a switch providing LAN and WLAN access but it can't be seen whilst using the airport utility. Ideally I would like to turn the wifi off on the Netgear box.
Any thoughts or pointers welcome.

So it seems the router has automatically put itself in bridge mode when I did the hard reset. I didn't put it in bridge mode it configured itself. This is what confused me as I know little about networks.
So I think I need to hard reset the netgear router whilst disconnected from the apple network.
Go to the netgear config page and turn off wireless, hook back up to Airport and then try and manually put in bridge mode and hope!
Unfortunately every time I do a hard reset it would turn the wless on.

AirTunes using Airport Express - Low sounds level in speakers

Recently, I started having a problem with the sound level coming from the speakers connected to my Airport Express. The setup worked fine until a few weeks ago.
Actions I have tried:
(1) a hard reset of the Airport Express - no improvement
(2) connecting speakers directly to laptop - sounds level was great
Software I'm using:
- iTunes v7.1.1.5
- Airport Express Firmware v6.2

I suggest that you upgrade your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) firmware to version 6.3.

Poor sound quality on airtunes and airport express

I recently configured a new Airport Extreme base station and two airport expresses. I used the airport expresses to extend my network but the sound quality is very poor when I run itunes no my stero. can anyone tell me why and how to fix it. The sound is very scratchy and there is no volume.

I'd like to follow up because I think that the answer to why I am getting poor sound quality my be in how I set up my wireless network. I'd like to get some feedback about this and some help about how to correct it.
My wireless network has three components.
1. "Base Station" which is a new Airport Extreme.
2. Unit "Number 1" which is an Airport Express located in my living room and connected to my stereo. it is 30 feet away from the "Base Station."
3. Unit "Number 2", also an Airport Express that is upstairs in a bedroom and connected to a ruby imac. via its ethernet port.
Wireless strength is excellent in all locations and all other services are working well from a laptop, the ruby mac or the imac. My problem only seems readily apparent when playing itunes through the stereo's speakers.
My wireless system is configured as follows:
Base Station: Wireless mode is set to participate in wireless network and to allow this network to be extended. The WDS mode is main and is set to allow wireless clients. The two airport expresses are identified by ID number as remotes.
Unit 1 and 2 are configured as WDS remotes and to allow wireless clients and identify the base station as WDS main.

Connect airport express to existing netgear wtg624

I'm trying to set up AE to use airtunes on existing netgear wtg624 security enabled 64-bit wireless network and it's NOT WORKING!
1. connect to the AE via ethernet cable
2. select 'connect to my current wireless network'
3. select 'join my wireless network' in order to play itunes thru my remote speakers.
4. select my wireless network name. I am prompted that the settings have been detected on my computer and it will be used for the AE setup. I select yes.
5. key in my wireless network password and verify, and name my AE
6. key in AE password and verify password
7. verify wireless network password and hit update.
I am prompted that the AE is being detected, written too, and then restarted. The AE restarts, turns flashing amber, and I am prompted with:
'The airport basestation is configured but is unable to reconnect to the network or detect if the base station is functioning correctly.'
The password is correct, the basestation restarted and I did not manually cancel the detection process.
NO WORKY...
Any ideas out there....

If your Netgear wireless router supports it, trying using WPA/WPA2 security rather than 64-bit WEP. That way you avoid the WEP key problems inherent with trying to get wireless networking equipment from two different manufacturers talking to each other.

Airtunes via Airport Express crashing MacBook

Very frequently when I'm playing music via AirTunes, my MacBook freezes (keyboard, mouse button, trackpad) but the music keeps playing just fine. The iTunes display shows the correct track and progress bar - but I can't switch applications and can't access Force Quit. The music will continue to play beautifully until I decide to cause a forced restart of the MacBook.
Anyone seeing this behavior? (Most posts seem to be about sound cutting out or sound quality suffering)
