AJA DPX to Quicktime and FCP

Does anyone have experience using AJA's DPX to Quicktime Translator?
I am trying to convert a folder full of DPX files into a Quicktime movie sequence. I'd then like to drop that Quicktime into FCP, change a few titles, and then downconvert to SD for a DVD.
Although I can translate the DPX files to MOV Quicktime files, it does one at a time and makes a new MOV for each DPX. I want to know if I can automatically convert a whole folder (our whole 15 minute film) into 1 Quicktime .mov sequence.
ANY advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Open the first DPX file with the translator. The translator will find all the rest in the same folder and output them as a Quicktime MOV sequence.

  • Quicktime and fcp dont recognize a .mpg file?

im running fcp 5.0.4 with quicktime 7.0.3,
i have a file that i made with a pinnacle system on a pc.
i got it from another one of my hard drives, and it is rendered from the pc as a MPEG type of file.
    the extension is .mpg
when i play it was quicktime 7.0.3, it works fine.
then when i load that same file to fcp 5.0.4 the audio isnt with it.
also when i try to render my file to another extension such as .mp4 for my ipod theres is also no audio.
    whats going on?

You need to get software like MPEG Streamclip to demux the audio and the video and allow them to be seen seperately.
Also, FCP won't deal with mpeg video as it cannot deal with i frame based video. You'll have to convert to QT if you want to use it in FCP.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

  • Quicktime Movie Properties and FCP

If I open a file in Quicktime, and go to Movie Properties, there is a button for High Quality, which seems to sharpen the image. Can anyone tell me exactly what it does - is it just a sharpening filter? If it really is improving the playback quality, can you select this as enabled when exporting from FCP?
    Cheers
    Steve

By default, QT Movies are set to NOT playback at highest quality when playing back on your system. There's a freeware program called HiQual you can use that sets the high quality flag automatically when you drop a QT movie on it: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14255

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both.  I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time.  Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset.  Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing.  Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason.  Thank you very much in anticipation for any kind of proper guidance.

  • Quicktime 7.0.3 and FCP 4.5

Are there major issues with these two? I am on 10.3.9 OS
FCP has been acting a little weird since installing QT 7.0.3. It's harder to make exact cuts in the timeline among other issues.

Yes...there are major issues. Do not use QT 7, 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5. VERY FEW people have gotten it to work right. If you go to Tiger, QT 7 and FCP 4.5, you might have better luck (might) but best to stick with QT 6.5 with FCP 4.5.
A few peole might say "hey, but it works for me," but those people are dwarfed by that ones that it doesn't work for.

  • Final Cut, Quicktime, and Pro Tools conflicts

    Hi there,
I'm working on a "situation" I recently encountered, and wonder if anybody else has had this problem.
I'm trying to upgrade Pro Tools LE to version 6.9.2 with the install discs that were sent to me from Digidesign, and it's wreaking havoc with Final Cut Pro and Quicktime.
Initially when I installed the upgrade, I was running OSX 10.4.2, FCP 5.0.3 and QT 7.0.2. The Pro Tools upgrade worked fine, as did FCP when I launched it, but Quicktime wouldn't launch- spinning beachball forevermore.
So after doing all the basics- trashing pref's and render files, repairing permissions, etc.- and finding QT still wouldn't work, I tried upgrading to QT 7.0.3.
Once I did that, QT still wouldn't work, and Final Cut Pro would no longer launch. It just hung on the application startup screen, at no particular point each time.
I then upgraded to FCP 5.0.4, and as well OS 10.4.3. No luck. I installed the Pro Application Support updates 2005-02 1.0, and 3.1, and still no luck.
Since there is not yet a downgrade from QT 7.0.3 to 7.0.2, I ran the 7.0.2 to 7.0.1 installer, and downgraded to QT 7.0.1. QT still wouldn't launch, and FCP still hung on launch but this time it hung at the point where it was loading audio filters.
I tried removing the audio filters from their folders to see if it would launch then, but that didn't work. At this point, the only thing I could think to do was to uninstall Pro Tools altogether (safe uninstall, not clean uninstall) and this is what finally brought Quicktime and Final Cut back to life. Great, because I use FCP and QT everday, but I no longer have the use of Pro Tools.
Throughout this process I made sure to diligenty repair permissions, trash prefs, and restart whenever I made a change.
So I'm not sure at this point how to get Pro Tools LE 6.9.2, Final Cut Pro 5.0.4, and Quicktime (any version above 7.0) to work harmoniously, and I'm unable to spare any more troubleshooting time for a week or so because there are of course, projects due.
Has anybody else encountered these oddities?
    Thanks a lot,
    Joni

    Hi, Joni C
    I'm Bump,
I'm having the same trouble, I have FCP I'm running it on a G5 power Mac dual 2.5 ghz with 2.5 gb of memory, my os is 10.4.4. I also have Quicktime pro 7.0.3 and I have Pro Tools LE 7.0, every time I try to use FCP it starts and about five sec. later it shuts back down. I also have a Universal Audio UAD pci card that runs audio plugins and I also have fxpansion program it converts my vst & Au plugins to rtas for pro tools le. IBefore I installed FCP I wiped my hard drive and re installed a fresh version of tiger 10.4 and then I installed FCP studio, then Pro Tools, then all plugin and kept checking to make sure every thing was working correctly and then the U audio stuff with the Vst to rtas wrapper and it all was working fine. I even did the full final cut tutorial still worked fine. Yesterday out of no where final cut just stop working and still all the other programs work fine like dvd studios, soundtrack, motion, pro tools. If you can shead any light on this I would be very greatful

  • Help with cs3 and fcp -from cs2 and fcp thread..

didnt want to hijack the thread about cs2 and fcp so started a new one
hi, I'm using a proRes 422 file (  mov ) 1920x1080p 23.98fps 16:9. Loads and plays fine in CS3 (custom  desktop settings)...but wouldn't mind knowing your project settings for  your trial shooternz...so I can compare...
My file is dark and a little  flat...so I used levels effect adjustments.  However, though it looks  way better and exports OK ( hdtv 1920x1080p 24fps) I do see some "noise"  now if I freeze the frame...is that common or am I over doing it on the  gamma and levels correction ?
I'm just doing hd for the first time really  on this machine, trying to figure out what I need in future for machine  and upgrade to CS5...so I am going to dissect this file and figure this  out til the cows come home so I don't have to deal with problems in  future with new machine, etc.
Another thing...I have media info on this saying  mpeg-4 ( mov wrapper) video = apcn ..audio = ipcm..
    audio  1,536kbps, 1 hz, 16bits, 3 channels, ipcm..
However, there is no  sound on the track which loads into audio 4 when video goes on video 1.   This was shot with a boom - as I can see a boom shadow in shot during "  back to 1 "  on the set (when dolly moves back to 1 etc) .... ( sound  mixer) so it's possible there is in fact NO SOUND embedded in the video  file.  Is that common to have a soundtrack appear even if it is empty  with proRes ?
    thanks...Rod

Wow, not too popular a subject ...this....
Got an update from the man who sent me the prores file...and a little info re: his opinion of adobe coming from FCP...I will share it with you all...
If you are going the Adobe route, I would highly recommend that because Premiere  CS5 is a really impressive app when it comes to working with footage and  editing.  I have recently moved over to the Adobe CS5 Suite because Final Cut is  good, but it hasn't been updated in a while....and the Mac is a really expensive  alternative to a really good PC.
The color space for the clip I sent over  was set for Rec709 HD Colorspace which is meant for broadcast, but on a non  calibrated monitor, it will look dark.  It usually requires a gamma shift and  color treatment (since the clip is uncorrected), but it sounds like you are on  your way.
Given the RED work flow, we always shoot raw and make the  adjustments prior to rendering.  The main reason we use the Adobe Suite is  because you can work natively with any footage in the digital work flow.....FCP  requires you to transcode everything into a Pro-Res Quicktime and you lose all  of the really granular ability to treat the footage in order to get through the  edit and color grade.
sooo, new computer will have a broadcast monitor ( just in case one is needed )...
I adjusted my clip by eye, plus vectorgraph etc, (levels and gamma) and it turned out fine...

  • Trouble exporting to quicktime in FCP X

I'm new to FCP X and whenever I export my project to Quicktime and try and play it back on another computer it says something like "this will not play". How do I export it so that it can play back on a computer that does not have FCP X?

Are you trying to play it on another Mac or a PC? Can you remember what settings you made for the export?

  • Premiere Elements 10 - can't play back imported HD video (from Canon HV30) in Quicktime or FCP

After playing around with the trial version, I eagerly purchased Photoshop Elements 10 Premiere for its ability to edit video from my Sony Cybershot camera (Final Cut Pro would not do this) and for its ability to import video from my Canon HV30 HD camcorder (Final Cut Pro is really fussy on this).
Also liked the option of importing without breaking in to individual scenes.  FCP and iMovie won't do this.
So, after the first import of a tape, I discover that the imported file will NOT play via Quicktime, and when I imported that file into Final Cut Pro, I got the eternal circle icon which lead to a crash.

  • Mac Pro and FCP - Very Unstable

I just purchased the Mac Pro and installed FCP 5.1.2. I have a dual 2.6 Ghz with 2.5 TB external eSATA Raid (using the Sonnet E4P card), Kona LHe Card and 3 GB of RAM.
    1. FCP, Quicktime and Shake each unexpectedly quits on playback of video within a few minutes of opening and
    2. Video in FCP and Quicktime has blocky (colored lego) defects and corruption.
I suspect this may be the RAID or Quicktime, but this is about the most unstable FCP setup I have ever experienced since FCP 1.0.
Any suggestions? is it my RAID controller card, Quicktime, FCP or something else?
    Thanks.

  • Cpi-files - problem to open in Mac osx and FCP. Need help

I have camera Sony Hdr-sr1 and i have problem becouse mac osx don't see films from my camera, it is PCI files. FCP don't see it either.
    Can i do something?

the SR1 shoots AVCHD in HD mode and MPEG2 in SD ... the AVCHD you can import (and transcode) via Log and Transfer with FCP 6.0.1 or later, the MPEG2 you need to transcode yourself prior to import (you can use the free MOEG Streamclip app to do this: choose Export to Quicktime and set the Compressor to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC)

  • Combing Keynote, Motion and FCP. Best Strategy?

Ok Im trying to do a project where Im using Keynote content, Motion content and FCP content.
My final screen delivery will be on a flat screen plasma monitor with a native resolution of 852 x 480.
I am going to be playing this back as a looping Quicktime movie from a Mac to the plasma screen. The screen will be functioning essentially as a computer monitor.
The piece will only be about 3-4 minutes max run time.
The video I've shot is standard DV resolution: 720 x 480.
I am building the whole project at 852 x 480 so I dont have to scale up the video to fit the final screen size vertically.
I was intending to piece it all together in Motion.
(Exporting Quicktime renderings from Keynote and Final Cut at high resolution and placing them on the timeline in Motion...)
Now, with Motion and FCP's ability to transfer files back and forth, am I using the best strategy? Should the whole thing be assembled in FCP? Or is Motion just as good for assembly.
(I want to use Motion because I find it's interface way easier to push around than FCP and much less cryptic...)
Is there any slicker way to bring in Keynote material than to do the exporting to Quicktime thing?
Any advise I could get from all you motion gurus out there would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Well after actually starting in on the real construction of this project it has become very obvious it must be assembled in FCP.
Now that I have resolved myself to that fact, I have a few issues:
I've exported all my Keynote stuff in Animation Codec.
Is that better than H.264? (Seemed to be slightly sharper on type edges)
I tried setting up the sequence to have H.264 compression but it refused to accept any imports.
I changed it back to NTSC DV Codec and it accepted to imports no prob.
Must all FCP projects use DV codec?
You cant tell them to use a different compression system?
(This is one of those areas of FC that I find utterly mysterious.)
When I bring the Keynote clips into my FCP document, they look crunchy.
    And they stumble on playback.
Is that just temporary in the editing environment.
The video plays back pretty clean...
Can I get all the files to play back cleanly in FC as Im working on them?
Will the compression used in my sequence be ignored upon export to the Final Quicktime?
And what's the deal with the frame rates on the Keynote files.
Even though I specified 29.97 on export, when I get info on the files theyre all over the place (20fps, 24fps...)
    Is that a problem?

  • JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP

Is there anyone out there using a JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP. Would like to hear what you have to say about file types, conversion, etc. Was hoping for a quicker download, but converting is taking about as much time as download tape. Any suggestions?

I "might" be able to help.
I, too have a JVC hard drive camera. Not the same model as you, and not HD, but still the same idea. One big difference between our cameras is that your camera creates a "TOD" file, and mine creates an "MOD" file. The difference between the two may void my advice, but I doubt it.
I had similar problems converting to a file useable by FCP. I finally called JVC, and they told me to get "Capty MPEG Edit EX". I dropped the fifty bucks and it works great. A little slow, but it works. I still think it's better than capturing tape.
I HAVE learned though that buying a hard drive camera was somewhat of a mistake. By compressing the video to be saved on the drive, we've already lost something. My needs don't require super high quality 3 CCD video, so it really doesn't matter that much for me. I don't know about your needs.
Secondly, I've downloaded a free program called MPEG Streamclip. It works great. It's a little quicker than Capty and it was free. Also, I took one of my MOD files and changed it to TOD, and it opened just fine. Also, when exporting with MPEG Streamclip, if you choose "Export To Quicktime", use the default "Apple Motion JPEG A" setting and choose "unscaled" for your video and 100% quality on your sound, there is no need to render in FCP. BIG time saver for me. Now, somebody that knows way more about this than I do could probably flame me and say I'm "converting crap to crappier" or something, but it looks pretty good to me, and it works for what I'm doing.
