AJA IO HD demonstration in KC, MO area

An AJA IO HD is on my dream list but before I spend that kind of money I like to see items 'up close and personal' to see if it will really fit my workflow with FCP. Not always easy to do with the higher end pieces of equipment. This is actually being demonstrated in the Kansas City, MO area (actually in Overland Park, KS) for anyone in this area who is interested.

The AJA IoHD presentation was FABULOUS. The Apple rep spoke 2 hours non-stop at breakneck speed showing the workflow of Final Cut/Motion/Color/SoundTrack Pro using the AJA IoHD. Very impressive.
Tallguy,
<Make them show you the HDMI output>
I had to laugh--didn't even need to ask your question. As they were setting it up, they were trying to output with HDMI, wasn't working, and ended up using component. I did ask the person working on the setup about it and he explained something to the effect of:
Something about HDCP (copy protection) going through HDMI and there are different versions. If the monitor doesn't have any HDCP or different version than what coming through the other end, the HDMI won't work. They have to match at both ends. Kept saying it had to do with the HDCP. Being clueless on my end, I just nodded my head and said OK
I left there for a hands-on demonstration of the Sony Z7U.
Lock up my charge card!

  • Online format and AJA HD question. Which HD is right ?

I am supposed to deliver an output in HDCam SR, 24P format, 4:4:4 color space in 16:9 (1.78:1 full frame)
I am running a HD AJA card, but get different formats in the FCP selection box such as HD (960x720) , HDTV 720p, HD (1280x1080), also with the compression settings I`m not sure if I should use the AJA Uncompressed 8 or 10 bit which are only 4:2:2
My current timeline has stock footage in 720x480 29.97 and HD 960x720.
The offline was cut in a 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2) Anamorphic 16:9 CCIR 601
Is it easiest to just change the offline timeline format and then re-size all the clips? and what of the above formats should I use?
    Thanks for any help,
    Sincerely
    Christian

I already have all the footage in high res on the system, since I captured it right of the Panasonic HVX200 camera and the P2 cards. I just did the editing in a low res timeline. So no re-capture needed. But what I`m not sure of is what the right HD resolution is that they need for HDCam SR. Is it 960x720, or 1280x1080,... 24P or 23.98,... ?

  • Video Out with AJA Io

Anyone have any luck monitoring Shake 4.0 or 4.1 on an external monitor via the AJA Io? If so, what settings are you using? We can't seem to get it to work?
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It will only work if you can make it one of your desktop monitors. You specify to Shake which of the desktops are broadcast out.

  • FCP - Voice Over problem

I have a FCP system set up which includes an AJA Kona LHe card. Audio inputs are via the AJA. This includes audio from a video deck as well as other audio inputs, such as a studio condenser mic connected for voice overs. I monitor the output from FCP through the AJA card via a Samson C-Control (monitor matrix). Here's my big problem. When I'm recording voice over, whilst there is definitely an audio feed being routed to the headphones (I am able to hear the audio cue countdown), I am unable to monitor the sound from the microphone through the headphones (or speakers for that matter). The microphone is working fine... when it comes to playing back the voice over through the headphones (or speakers), I can hear the track absolutely fine. I cannot understand why this should be. Has anyone experienced the same problem... and do you know how to solve it? HELP!.... Thank you.

Thanks for responding. Where do I find the checkbox that allows playthrough? What's it called... and which menu is it in? Thanks

  • Does anyone know how to monitor a microphone when using Voice Over tool?

I use Final Cut studio in conjunction with an AJA Kona LHe card. Audio inputs are via the AJA. I monitor the output from FCP through the AJA card via a Samson C-Control (monitor matrix). Here's my problem. When I'm recording voice over, I am unable to monitor the sound from the microphone through the headphones (or speakers). There is definitely an audio feed being routed to the headphones as I am able to hear the audio cue countdown. The microphone is working fine too - when it comes to playing back the voice over through the headphones (or speakers), I can hear the track absolutely fine. Has anyone experienced the same problem... and do you know how to solve it? Many thanks, AW

its not that you've anything screwy going on .. this is the way it is engineered to work.
the pre-existing audio (and cues) is routed to the headphones but not the voice being recorded.
the solution is to use an audio mixer to monitor both the voice over and the timeline

  • File menu broken in 2014.02

Premiere Pro has been locking up when i go to the file menu after playing a video. The menu will not display or will show an application isn't responding error.
All the other menus work apart from the File menu, When i have attempted to get a screenshot of the problem happening the print screen function also stops working. (all functionality stops working when the file menu is open causing the OS to grind to a hault, this feels like a memory leak.)
    What have i done?
Reinstalled Adobe Premiere (Clean install using the uninstaller tool.)
Reinstalled the drivers using a clean installation.
Reinstalled depedencies such as Quicktime and VCs.
What version of Premiere Pro? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Pro CS5.5 with the 5.5.2 update).:  8.2.0 (65) build (Premiere Pro CC 2014.2)
Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.) Yes.
What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac". Win 8.1 64 bit
What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime". H.264 in a mp4 container.
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)? No. (Just having lock ups)
What were you doing when the problem occurred?  (Playing a video followed by trying to go to the file menu. the file menu drops down however the file menu isn't displaying. This can make the device lock up completely while it waits for a response from Premiere Pro CC.)
Has this ever worked before?  Yes (for a very long time!)
What other software are you running?  N/A
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?  N/A
Tell us about your computer hardware. Be especially certain to tell us about third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU). N/A
Are you using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration?  Yes using the latest 347.09 driver set.
Does the problem only happen with your final output, with previews, or both? this affects the program.

    H:\java\misc\forums>java CurDir
    H:\java\misc\forums exists? false
    H:\java\misc\forums exists? true
    public class CurDir
         public static void main(String [] arg) {
              File curdir = new File("");
              curdir = new File(curdir.getAbsolutePath());
}I think what may be happening here is that, in the first case, you are selecting a file named "" in the current directory (not the directory itself). The absolute path name of this is then given as a string: "H:\java\misc\forums\" + "" (directory + file name). However, this string (when concatenated) represents a directory in the second case. That is, the second one is the current directory, while the first one is a file "" in the current directory ("" would not be a valid file). Internally, File contains a name sequence, representing the hierarchy of directory and file names. My guess is that in one case the hierarchy is {"H:", "java", "misc", "forums", ""} and the other {"H:", "java", "misc", "forums"}; see the difference?
You can test this out using File.getName() or File.getParent() to see if they represent different things:
    File firstFile = new File("");
    File secondFile = new File(firstFile.getAbsolutePath());
    System.out.println("Name of first file:    " + firstFile.getName());
    System.out.println("Name of second file:   " + secondFile.getName());
    System.out.println("Parent of first file:  " + firstFile.getParent());
System.out.println("Parent of second file: " + firstFile.getParent());If you are looking to get the current directory, you may want to use "." instead of "". Alternatively, you can get the current working directory from the system properties.

  • Edits FROM macbook pro TO NTSC monitor....how?

Is there a less expensive monitor "bridge" than the Matrox where I can play my edit on an NTSC monitor from my Macbook Pro? Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks
    Mark

For HD? No. The only options you have for HD from a laptop are Matrox MXO, AJA I/O HD and Motu V3HD. MXO is the cheapest of the bunch.
SD...like DV? Yeah...camera, deck that you might already have, Canopus ADVC 110, 300. SD...like uncompressed SD or ProRes? Back to the HD options...but include AJA I/0 LA.
What format are we talking about here?

    Vladimir,
No offence, but in the article you refer to, they did say that they only tested against an Oracle 9i database (and not an Oracle 8i database). I also didn't see anything in the article that says that the procedure they describe should work in Oracle 8i as well.
Apart from that, and excuse me if it is an obvious question, but can you send eMail from the machine where Oracle is running? For example, if the machine is a UNIX machine, can you use the "mail" (or "mailx") command to send eMail.
I recall working on a UNIX system that demonstrated the behaviour you are describing. When I tried to send eMail to an account that was outside of the UNIX box, I would get no error messages, but the eMail simply seemed to disappear. Perhaps you are experiencing the same problem?
[Unfortunately, I never resolved this issue, so even if it is your problem, I'm afraid I can't help you resolve it, anyway. Sorry :-( ]
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • MBP fan behavior question

    Hi,
Looking to (finally) upgrade my Powerbook G4. This is a very quiet machine, and the fans only kick in when editing video, playing games, etc. So I am wondering...
Is it true that the new Macbook Pro fans are on all the time? Are there any models which don't run fans constantly?
    Thanks.
    JP

Logicboard failure may be more due to people not understanding how the cable ports are right on the logicboard.
Blame it on user behavior? Hmmm. Given the discussion about all the heat the MBP can potentially produce, I'd be more inclined to think along the terms of it being a heat issue. One of the problems with the G5 logic board was a problem where an area of the board (solder connection?) became damaged from repeated expansion due to heating up and cooling down. (Multiple users confirmed this issue and even demonstrated how heating the area up with a hair dryer would temporarily restore the connection.)
If there is a problem, I would put my money on the logic board not being built hardy enough to withstand the extreme conditions of life in a laptop computer (rapid heating and cooling cycles).
But anyway, AFAIK, that's all speculation in regards to recent MBP models. I'd be curious to see some links to discussions regarding problems people may be having with logic boards in these computers.

  • Mirror iOS device screen via Lightning?

I have a requirement to be able to mirror iPad/iPod/iPhone screens to a Mac for demonstration purposes. There are solutions out there which mirror the screen over the WiFi connection, but unfortunately this won't work for me as I need to demonstrate joining a WiFi network with these devices.
Searching online led me to some software called iTools, but this is somewhat laggy and unimpressive, so I'm looking to see what other options exist besides using a stand-mounted camera.
One option I thought might work would be to use a Lightning to HDMI or VGA adapter and somehow get that feed into a Mac. I'm wondering if anyone in the community is aware of software which would let me take an HDMI or VGA feed back into a Mac and display it in realtime on the Mac's screen.
    Thanks for any help.
    Simon

Unless your Mac has a Video Capture card (hardware), no software in the world will let you get video through HDMI into a Mac.
Does it have to be a MAC?   Can it not be a Tv or projector?  or if you need to record this, an External Video Recorder?
Also this more a Mac question than it is iPad since you need hardware on the mac to get the signal, perhapos posting in the MAc forum may provide more relevant answers.

  • Difference in video brightness/contrast across viewer applications

I am using FCP->Color>FCP roundtrip to grade Red footage. After I grade the clips in Color and send them back to FCP, I see a difference in brightness/contrast of the graded clips when playing in FCP. And when I export the final output to quicktime and play it in quicktime player, I see further difference in brightness and contrast. Essentially the clips appear darker when played in QT player. Now I am confused as to which application is showing the correct brightness/gamma level? Is there a way to make all the applications play the video at same/true brightness/gamma? Any insights would be highly appreciate. Thanks!
    -Pranab

There is a distinction between PCIe-based GPUs and I/O cards that you have to be aware of. COLOR's user interface, render/scopes and output are split between the two. A graphics processor handles the user interface (PCIe is better, application won't run on on-board integrated or AGP), and actual grade values for judgement are based on a PCIe HD-SDI I/O card like AJA Kona3, or Blackmagic (Intensity?) which are NOT graphics cards, they are video interfaces.
For GPUs, if the application is running, that's a good indicator. However, preferred cards have been evolving over the past 5 years. My first system was configured with a Quadro 4500FX which was a total waste of money. I deliberately chose an ATI X1900XT for the next tower, which was a significant improvement. My third MacPro is running fine with the default ATI 2600HD, which is as plain vanilla as you can get. Some users report speed advantages with the newer 4870 series, but I fail to see significant differences -- COLOR in its current delivery will never deliver "real-time" preview playback on any card, and it still takes a very long time to render, in comparison with some other grade offerings. Fourth machine, I'm still deciding, but it would be great if Apple got the FX4000 thing happening, and I'll get to that.
Nvidia does suffer from some bit-depth processing issues in that it does not directly support 10-bit codecs, but can be switched into the more intensive "float" mode. It also has some other transient issues.
Looking outside Apple COLOR, consider that Blackmagic Resolve ("DaVinci") is predicated entirely on nVidia's CUDA-processing technology and is restricted to implementation on 2 or 3 very specific cards, as opposed to the FCP-centred, but ATI/AJA-leaning Apple solution, which, although somewhat restricted, is 90% more likely to run on almost anything PCIe that you can stick into a MacPro. However, the color science and cross-platform (AVID support, for example) that DaVinci offers makes it very tempting, and that's why I'm paying a lot more attention to nVidia these days.
If you are looking for HDSDI PCIe cards, then AJA, with IO, Kona3, and so on definitely has the edge and can extend capabilities up to and beyond 2K processing, but many users select other solutions that suit their individual needs -- not everyone delivers theatrical Digital Cinema or needs to.

  • What is the easier way to edit a captured slide?

I have created a demonstration animation and there are several slides that need a little graphics editing.
So far, I have not found a way to automate the process of editing slides.
The only method I can determine is by selecting "Copy Background", then opening a graphics editor, pasting to a new window, edit accordingly, save the edited graphic background, import into the slide.
Isn't there anyway to edit inline?.. meaning, the background is automatically sent to your choosen graphics editor, you edit the graphic, click save/exit, and the graphics background is automatically updated. That is how Captivate 4's competitors do it.

    Hi Shawn
It really depends on what exactly you need to do. For example, if all you want is an easy way to blot out some words, use a Highlight Box object at zero percent transparency. Then merge it into the background. Or maybe you need an image added in. Add the image separately and merge it.
Last week we needed to render an option button as unselected. In that case I just right-clicked and opened in Microsoft Paint. Duplicated another and overlaid the errant one. Closed and saved. Total update time from start to finish was less than two minutes.
    Cheers... Rick

  • So there is Firewire out

so in the last update for Color i was playing around and click on the Video output and it says disabled, but if you click on it you get a grayed out drop down menu with FireWire out options, anyone else seen this?

    Matt, get over it already.
There is no firewire external monitoring in Color beyond the Aja IO/HD. If you want to play in the land of accurate video, you'll need to pony up the bucks to at least an Intensity Pro in a Mac Pro but quite honestly, I wouldn't trust the accuracy of that device. Aja Kona LHe. This is one area you'll need to pay if you want to play, sorry, but that's the truth.

  • Editing from a pile of.dpx files

    Hello!
I'd like to work my way from a disk full of .dpx files to being able to cut some sequences.
Its not going to go back to film at the moment but they're beautiful pictures and I'd like to work at highest quality possible.
    I have at my disposal:
pokey MacPro, some SATA Raid storage, and an AJA Io HD
all three of which are slightly beyond my ken.
Would anyone be willing to point me to some good resources, or offer me some stepping stones for a work flow?
    Thanks a bundle

All I want to do is make auto playing DVD's from a video file or files. Is there a drag-and-drop program that can do this?
    Have you tried... iDVD?
You can burn a OneStep DVD from a movie on your hard disk, skipping the creative process involved in creating menus, modifying themes, and so on. When you insert the burned disc into a DVD player or a computer, the disc plays automatically.
    From the iDVD Help:
To burn a OneStep DVD from a movie on your hard disk:
With iDVD open, choose File > “OneStep DVD from Movie.”
Locate the movie you want to add in the dialog that opens, then click Import.
Insert a blank DVD disc into your computer’s SuperDrive or an external drive when you are prompted to do so.
There's more about OneStep iDVD in the Help.

  • How to join 2 tables with unequal rows without resulting in a cartesian join

    Hello,
This is the first time I have ever posted in any forum so please tell me if I should be doing this better.
Basically I have 2 tables with an unequal number of rows. For demonstration purposes, assume these are my 2 tables:
    Table 1:
    BaseKey
    Letters
    A
    A
    A
    B
    A
    C
    B
    A
    B
    B
    Table 2:
    BaseKey
    Numbers
    A
    1
    A
    2
    B
    1
    B
    2
    B
    3
I need to join them so that the data would appear like this
    BaseKey
    Letters
    Numbers
    A
    A
    1
    A
    B
    2
    A
    C
    null
    B
    A
    1
    B
    B
    2
    B
    null
    3
Does anyone have any ideas how to do this using T-SQL without creating a cartesian join of 12 rows?
    Thanks.

    >> This is the first time I have ever posted in any forum so please tell me if I should be doing this better. <<
Please post DDL, so that people do not have to guess what the keys, constraints, Declarative Referential Integrity, data types, etc. in your schema are. Learn to follow ISO-11179 data element naming conventions and formatting rules. Temporal data should
use ISO-8601 formats. Code should be in Standard SQL as much as possible and not local dialect.
This is minimal polite behavior on SQL forums. What you did post is useless! Can you program from it? Neither can we. And we have to do all the extra typing for you.
    CREATE TABLE Foo
    (base_something  CHAR(1) NOT NULL,
     something_letter CHAR(1) NOT NULL,

This looks like you are taking two decks of punch cards and merging them together, without any logical rules, just physical position in their decks relative to the base_something groups.
