AJA Kona Support in Premiere CS5.5

I'm new to Premiere, and I've encountered some unexpectedly poor performance that I'm currently attributing to my AJA Kona 3, but I'm wondering what I can do about it. I downloaded a trial of CS5.5 and installed the latest AJA drivers (9.0.3) and Adobe plug-ins (9.0.1). Here's my system configuration:
Mac Pro 4,1
2 Xeon 2.93 Ghz
16 GB RAM (10 GB allocated to PP/AE/AME)
OSX 10.6.5
AJA Kona 3
No CUDA-enable GPU
External RAID storage array w/ fiber interface
I'm working with a mix of source materials - XDCAM EX footage, ProRes 422 or Animation graphic renders, DVCPro HD or Uncompressed captures - all at 1080/59.94i
For starters, sometimes I have clips that shouldn't have to render that begin stuttering or failing to play, but after I stop and attempt to play that portion again, it works fine. This becomes very problematic during Export to Tape operations, when it can play through most of a sequence then hang up at the end. It seems most prone to this when switching between video codecs in the same sequence where they are not marked with any render-indicating color. I assume this means the Kona is handling those clips and should be able to play them without any problems. Is there some configuration issue I should look at that will address this? Maybe RAM allocation?
Secondly, I can't figure out how to output timecode via the 9-pin RS-422. It seems that Premiere is not sending any timecode information to the Kona, because when I enable timecode overlay from the AJA Control Panel, it doesn't show anything. If I open a Quicktime file using AJA TV, the timecode will display as expected. Is there a configuration option within Premiere that I'm overlooking? Not offering TC output seems like it would be a major oversight, so I'm assuming this is something I simply can't figure out.
Third, I'm experiencing an odd issue when scrubbing the sequence to find edit points in the audio. When I scrub frame-by-frame, it seems that the audio being played is always from the frame I just scrubbed FROM, not the frame I scrubbed TO (i.e., the current frame). This is not intuitive, and also not how Premiere works in non-AJA sequence presets. I'm assuming that this is just an AJA bug, but wanted to mention it in case I'm overlooking something.
I know this is a lot for one thread, but I appreciate the community's time, expertise, and help. I really am excited about working with Premiere instead of FCP, but these issues can be frustrating.
Thanks,
Josh

  • ASIO support in Premiere CS5

    Hoi all,
    I have an interesting problem.
I installed the trial version of the Premium Production Suite CS5
    Everyting works fine.
Just to be clear on this.
I do have audio, on my computer and in premiere and it works.
But now I want to configure my audio hardware and set my soundcards ASIO driver and guess what... its not there.
    This is what I did...
In Adobe Premiere Pro, choose Edit > Preference > Audio Hardware. The default driver appears in the Input/Output Device menu as Adobe Default Windows Sound. If an ASIO driver supplied by the sound card manufacturer is installed, it is also appears in this menu.
well, it does not appear in the menu.
Strange because, in my CS4 it works correctly.
There I can select my soundcards ASIO driver and it works perfectly.
So I can choose between Premiere Pro WDM Sound and Creative ASIO.
In my CS5, I only get to see the Premiere Pro WDM Sound setting.
And thats a pain in the ... you know what lol ... because now I'm not able to use my 5.1 surround system in Premiere pro because I'm only able to use my front speakers wich makes it very difficult to mix audio in a 5.1 surround enviroment.
I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Professional Series soundcard  with the latest drivers installed.
and just to be clear on this.
It works perfectly in CS4 and even in other programs like Magix Samplitude 11 Pro.
    Just not in my CS5
Hope someone has some ideas on this one.
    Thanks in advance
    Fred

Good to know that I'm not the only one with this problem.
Maybe something that can be solved with an update.
In Soundbooth however I can choose my Creative Asio driver.
So I started to go thrue all the relevant software and started to compare my CS4 and CS5 programs.
    This is the result:
Premiere Pro CS5 can't see the Creative ASIO drivers (works in CS4)
After Effects CS5 can't see the Creative ASIO drivers (works in CS4)
Soundbooth is able to see the Creative ASIO drivers (also works in CS4)
At this point I even tried to install ASIO4ALL.
Premiere Pro CS5 is able to see the ASIO4ALL drivers, so I selected this and configured the settings, but when I start to play audio in the timeline in a surround setup the output channels are wrong:
    Left = Left
    C = SL
    R = Right
    SL = C
    SR = LFE
And there's no way in fixing this so that's no option and I un-installed ASIO4ALL.
maybe it has something to do with CS5 beeing natively 64-bit.
But at the moment I can't think of what more I can do.
I even started Premiere Pro CS5 as administrator. No change...
Going into adobes hardware compatibility list for CS5 programs, there's no hardware you can select.
    So ...
Hopefully someone with Adobe picks up this problem and is able to fix it or is able to give a workarround.
    Fred.

  • Audio Playback Issues in Premiere Pro 8.1.0 with AJA Kona 3

    Hi,
I'm supporting a couple of edits running the latest version of Premiere Pro. The editors are experiencing some strange stuttering/glitching audio playback via the installed AJA Kona 3 cards, manifested as follows:
When scrubbing using keyboard arrow keys for any prolonged period of time, audio either begins to stutter or fails to playback (despite there being activity on the audio monitors within the software)
When playing audio with unrendered effects (nothing too challenging, unrendered titles etc.), the audio will occasionally not play at all or will begin to stutter also.
    Specs are as follows:
    HP z800 running Windows 7 64-bit
    2 x Intel Xeon X5650 CPUs
    32GB RAM
    512GB Samsung SSD
nVidia Quadro 4000 (latest drivers installed)
AJA Kona 3 (latest drivers installed)
Wacom Intuos 4 tablet (latest drivers installed)
Storage is a SMB share connected via a dedicated 1Gb/s ethernet link (Intel PRO 1000 card) and media is largely DVCPRO HD 100 wrapped as OP1a MXF, with corresponding sequence settings.
I've played with various RAM and Playback settings (including setting the AJA video playback buffer to 'minimum' as suggested on another thread regarding audio playback), but the problems persist. Is there anything else I can try, or more information I can provide?

Since it worked with CS5.5, check with Blackmagic to see if they have updates for CS6
I know from other discussions that an nVidia driver update was needed for at least some people upgrading to CS6

  • CS5.5, 10 bit, AVCIntra, AJA Kona and GTX580 vs Quadro

I will be purchasing a new editing computer in june. I'm switching over from Final Cut Pro on a Mac. Why am I switching? For a lot of reasons, but suffice it to say, CS5.5 is really looking like a time saver, and seems to make good business sense overall. And being independent, I don't really care about conforming to any one dogmatic camp (FCP or Avid, and the like).
I'm working a lot with AVCIntra footage (10-bit) and client-provided 3D generated content (also 10-bit). I'll have an AJA Kona LHi (supporting 10-bit) installed.
I've read a lot on the GeForce vs. Quadro, and understand that there is not much advantage to a Quadro, other then the extra edge for 3D applications. And that Geforces are 8-bit and Quadro are 10-bit. So price wise, the Geforce 580 for CS5.5 is probably my best bet.
My main questions are: Does PProCS5.5 fully support 10-bit, end-to-end? And if the GeForce is only 8-bit (though I've glimpsed somewhere the 580 might support 10-bit), will it impact real-time MPE playback outputed on the AJA Kona card? With the AJA Kona LHi installed, does it matter at all that I have an 8-bit or a 10-bit GPU card?
On a side note, there is a GTC590 now, with dual GPUs. Anyone tested it yet with the hack? Or will it be the same problem as with SLI GeForces not being supported by PPro?
One a second side note, I know people ask a lot about the best hardware to use. I've read a lot of posts about them. Most of them are quite old posts. As of May 2011, Any recommendations on components? Such as motherboards, raid cards, GTX580 manufacturer, etc.? But I'm especially interested to find out if the 6-core 990X i7 is worth the investment, compared to the 2nd gen 4-core i7 2600K? I would presume yes. But have never seen real world tests. And would a dual Xeon truly be twice as fast? Investment wise, much like the Geforce vs Quadro issue, I'm not sure it's worth 3 times the price for most likely less then twice the speed. Any comments?
    Thank you all,

Actually I am trying to get an answer to your 10 bit question via the I/O device currently. I am verifying if the I/O device is independent of the OGL 10Bit query Adobe does for the 10bit draw or if the I/O device passes the query. If not then do you have to have a Quadro card installed even with the I/O devices. Once I have the info, I will post it for you.
The AJA drivers before the 5.5 update did not work completely with the hardware acceleration, so an AJA card would slow the MPE performance down if using an AJA preset and the card. I am unsure if that is still the case with the new 5.5 version however they don't show an update for 5.5 on their website. I would call and talk to AJA on that one.
The MPE does not support Multi GPU so the 590 would be slower than the 570 or 580.
The 990X is worth it if you work allot in AE or overclock. Also what codec is the 3D material you will be working with?

  • Premiere Pro Audio Slipping with AJA Kona LHI

I have noticed that when I run Premiere Pro CC (Latest updates) My audio playing back on the Kona and on the desktop will progressively slip out of sync when my Kona LHI card is enabled through the video output options. The sync issue goes away when the card is unchecked. The initial release of PRCC did not have this problem, but when the updates were issued soon after, the slipping issue cropped up. Anybody have these problems? Any suggestions?

I realize this is a year old but was this issue resolved?
For what its worth I've had/have similar problems with Premiere Pro CC and the AJA Kona LHi card. Just call AJA support 1-530-271-3190 and speak to their tech support gurus. Their folks are awesome. I just tell them what I'm trying to do and they will stay on the line and help until you can get things running again. No fees for customer support, nothing to register for... just call them and ask for help and they will!
I wish more companies operated this way.

  • Need info about nvidia graphics card supported with premiere pro cs5

    Hi
I need information about nvidia graphics card supported with premiere pro cs5
If I have a computer(portable) with this video card or graphics card :
nVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX  285M with 1GB DDR3 Video Memory available in Single or Dual (SLi) Configurations
    Microsoft® DirectX® 10 Compatible
is it going to support MPE in premiere  pro cs5?
    Regards,

    To be clear:
You asked about supported cards. Here is a list of supported cards. Others on this thread are telling you how to make an unsupported card function to some degree using a method that is not advocated by Adobe.

  • Information about GPUs supported by Premiere Pro CS5.5

    Hi,
I'm going to buy a new nVidia video card and, because of I'm very passionate of video editing, I want finally have one supported by Premiere Pro CS5.5. I've read something about that on the Adobe site, and I've found a list of supported GPUs:
GeForce GTX 285 (Windows and Mac OS)
    GeForce GTX 470 (Windows)
    GeForce GTX 570 (Windows)
    GeForce GTX 580 (Windows)
    Quadro FX 3700M (Windows)
    Quadro FX 3800 (Windows)
    Quadro FX 3800M (Windows)
Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS)
    Quadro FX 5800 (Windows)
    Quadro 2000 (Windows)
    Quadro 2000D (Windows)
    Quadro 2000M (Windows)
    Quadro 3000M (Windows)
Quadro 4000 (Windows and Mac OS)
    Quadro 4000M (Windows)
    Quadro 5000 (Windows)
    Quadro 5000M (Windows)
    Quadro 5010M (Windows)
    Quadro 6000 (Windows)
    Quadro CX (Windows)
Now I'm asking, if I bought a GTX 550, which is not in the list, would it be supported? I think so becase, however, it should be better than, for example, a GTX 470, instead present in the list. But I have this doubt... Can you clarify my ideas?

    Welcome to the forums!
It depends on what you mean by supported.  If you mean can you use either of them then the answer is yes. The supported list is those cards specifically have been tested by Adobe and are listed in the "cuda_supported_cards.txt" file  If you have another card you may have to add it to that file.  If you take a look at the Premiere Pro BecnMark (PPBM5) you will see that many other cards are being used by people that have submitted their results,
The more important factors that you should consider is the number of CUDA cores and how much power your system can supply to this upgrade that you intend to do.  The 470 has 448 CUDA cores and requires 215 watts.  The 550 is of course a slightly new design but it is at the low end of the CUDA cores with only 192 cores but it only draws 116 watts.  Either could require you to upgrade your power supply depending on how much spare power is available in your power supply.
Here are some boards that I personally tested about a month ago (prices may have changed) showing PPBM5 (MPEG2-DVD, H.264 and Rendering the Timeline) encoding times versus board type.

  • Does Adobe Premiere CS5 for Mac support .m2ts (AVCHD) video?

I am trying to import video files encoded into the .m2ts (AVCHD) format into Adobe Premiere CS5 on my Mac.  Does the Mac version of Premiere CS5 support .m2ts (AVCHD) video formats?  I am currently testing this with the trial before I get this new version for the Mac.  Could using trial be the problem that even CS5 Premiere doesn't open it on my Mac?  Do I need the full version?  Thanks.

The trial does not support AVCHD for either platform.
Now, the full-paid version has no limitation, AND Adobe offers a 30-day, money-back guarantee, so if you do not like it, you can return it for a full refund, within 30 days.

  • OnLocation does not support input from Aja KONA?

I'm confused as to what the purpose of OnLocation is if it cannot support input via HDMI/SDI coming through an AJA KONA card?
Seriously, can anybody explain what the point of this application is? Capturing Firewire sources? Seems like it would be an easy update to add support for real capture cards, no?

but I did something goofy.........Open to any and all suggestions.
Figure out what you did goofy and then do the opposite.
Seriously, what have you done to troubleshoot this? There's any number of goofy things that you could do that may result in this issue. I'd start with reading the Kona manual and the rather extensive part in FCP about external monitoring.

  • Does Premiere 5.5, on a Mac, with a AJA Kona 3G display and play back footage from a RED Scarlet-Dragon or Epic-Dragon  in 4k?

I currently work on the following mac.  It has an AJA Kona 3G Card.
Curious if I can get this system to play back the red files on the client monitor.  I'm using a JVC
    DT-R24L41DU.
I know that this monitor won't display the 4k image.  I will be getting one that does.  But for sake of argument, does anyone have any success with the config I have outputting 4K to a client monitor?
    thanks,

The optimal RAID solution are the ARECA raid controllers.  If you want a total engineered RAID solution one of the Areca outlets can do that for you.  Another total systems solution is probably available from ADK VideoEditing, they use an also good line of RAID controllers from Intel which are actually manufactured by LSI
Also look at our PC oriented benchmarks PPBM5 and notice that many of the better scoring systems use Areca and Intel.
I wish we had a procedure to test Macs with our PPBM5 tests but both Harm and I are not Mac users so we cannot use the Mac terminology to write one.  Eric at ADK since he sits on both sides of PC and Macs has run PPBM5 on a well set up Mac Pro 2010 using the onboard RAID controller.  Maybe with your heavy PC background you could interpret the PC procedures to your Mac and see how those two machines compare.  If you are interested PM me and I can give you more information
