AL external FW enclosure ????

I'm looking an AL, external, firewire 400/800 enclosure that will accept a 2.5" SATA drive (removed from my MBP).
Can anyone recommend a quality enclosure?
Does G-Tech sell enclosures?
Thanks

Here's one that I got and like and it is firewire 400/800:

Oops! It's just aluminum on the bottom. But it still seems to be a quality enclosure.
Good luck!

  • Upgraded to Mavericks. Now External HDD Enclosure Won't Mount. Is there a fix?

Upgraded to Mavericks.  Now I can't get my external HDD enclosure to mount.  A little about this enclosure, as it's not the usual settup .  I have four 3TB HDDs in a RAID5 settup.  The most unique part is that they are formatted as a Windows NT Filesystem (Tuxera NTFS).  Basically, when I set this up, I had to get a lot of info from a Windows-formatted HDD, but also be able to read/write afterwards. It's worked fine for ~ 1 year, but now that I've upgraded to Mavericks, nothing will mount.  I ran Disk Utility, where I see the HDDs (I've partitioned them into four drives of varying sizes), but they are greyed out.  I tried to mount them, but it says it won't and that I should run First Aid.  So I did...tried to "Repair Disk," but it just gets stuck on "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."  For over an hour it's been on that message.
So, does anybody out there have a fix?  I've read several similar posts about people having a hard time mounting and, overall, dealing with external HDDs after upgrading to Mavericks.  But nothing seemed to fit my exact circumstances.  Lastly, I should mention that I've used both Firewire and USB connections.  Both resulted in the same.
    Thanks.

I can't help with specifics for your issue, but some general thoughts:
The upgrade and the disk problem may be a coincidence. It would help you if you could verify that the drive still works fine on a windows machine. If you run a windows virtual machine or have a windows pc, or a friend does, verify full functioning that way. If it still won't mount on the mac, try to copy/backup it's data onto the windows machine (maybe another external drive connected to it. You could then scrub the disk in windows, leave it unpartitioned, unformatted. Connect it back to the mac and format it as HFS+ (Mac extended journalled) and transfer the data back to it by sharing the windows machine external drive and connecting the two machines with a network cable.

  • My internal hard drive no longer boots.  Boots just fine in external usb enclosure.

My internal hard drive no longer boots when inside my laptop.  The drive boots just fine in external usb enclosure.  It is also fully recognized when internal (as seen in single user mode, recovery mode or while booting from another drive).
    I have tried:
    with disk utilities
    •fixing permissions
    •repairing disk
    in single user mode
    •fsck -fy
    zapping the pram
removing ram and zapping the pram
Any suggestions or diagnostics would be appreciated.

Can't believe I spent days reformating my hard drive, restoring it, getting another hard drive... and it was all a cable that failed.  I wonder what can make an internal cable like that fail (seems like the least likely part of all to fail).

  • ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 external drive enclosure USB 3.00 can't see my data!

ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 external drive enclosure USB 3.00 can't see my data!
    Hello to the community,
So indeed a pretty self-explanatory title. However you might not think so later.
I just received the ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 today from ebay. (But it's a product of RaidSonic) over in Germany see link:
    www.raidsonic.de/en/products/external-cases.php?we_objectID=8887
    The problem:
I have a large 1.5 TB seagate drive (15mm in height) which was originally in a iOmega external case (which was poor, thats another story).
The ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 is an extremely portable hot swappable enclosure/caddy. (Please do see the images from the above link). However when I plug my seagate HDD into the ICY adapter, it, my Mac cannot see the data I have on it whilst using this adapter! But If I use the old one my data can be seen, see images!.
You see in disk utility, before the above. A small dialog box giving me three options "initialize, and two others" appears, initialize takes me into disk utility. Shows as "ASMT 2105 Media" (not one of the partitions on the drive).
Below see connected to new ICYBOX enclosure/case: (don't ask me why it inserted upside down?)
And below using the old USB3.0 sata cable and adapter from the previous enclosure. Note that it works, my data can be seen, read and wrote. On the monitor you can see my "Data core" partition mounted!
As you can see the above is the drive plugged in using the old adapter and cable (SATA chip + USB 3.0) from iOmega. This works no problems you can see my partitions mounted and yes they do work.
This is disappointing as far as the  ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 is concerned for me. It should just work out of the box. But no it can't mount or even in anyway see my partitions that are definitely there. I want to use the ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 for this drive and should be able to but I cannot reformat and don't want to as this is the biggest drive a have at the moment.
There has to be a way around this, I have contacted RaidSonic who make the adapter and await a response. I have also done some  web searching but nothing promising has turned up.
Your input will be greatly appreciated,
    Many thanks,
    B-B

  • Switching iTunes (older version) from an old latptop with mechanical issues to iTunes on a new computer.  The hard drive, issue free, was placed in external drive enclosure.  How do I recover iTunes?

I'm trying to moves iTunes (older version) from an old latptop with mechanical issues (non working screen, keyboard, and battery) to iTunes on a new computer.  The hard drive, issue free, was placed in external drive enclosure.  This was a cost effective way instead of dumping lots of money in an outdated old laptop while I can invest it into a new laptop.  How do I recover iTunes?
I'm switching from a 3G phone to a blank 4GS in the process.  I would like to have everything that was on my 3G phone and iTunes on my new phone and computer.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • 500GB Seagate drive in an external FW enclosure won't mount

    Hi-
I have the latest MacPro with one internal HD 250 GB. I found a great deal on a an ATA drive by Seagate 500GB and bought an external FW enclosure, as I've done many times in the past with smaller drives 160GB, 40GB and so on.
I connected everything and it won't mount. This case says it will handle larger drive sizes. I swapped an older drive from another case and it worked fine. Is there a step I'm missing, or do I have a bad drive?
I'm want to use the 500Gb for FCE editing.
    Thanks,
    Anne Z

Unfortunately, all cases are not made equal. Depending on the chipset used in the external case, it may not be compatible with your 500GB drive. Some chipsets can not handle that big of a drive. I have one firewire drive that can't handle a 250GB drive, but it can a 200GB drive. This seems to be your case since you are able to put a smaller drive in the case and it works. You might want to see if you can return the case and find one that specifically states it can handle a 500GB drive.

  • Is it possible to attache an external GPU enclosure to iMac?

    Hi,
Lately I saw couple of video clips on youtube for people who attach external GPU enclosure to MacBook Air and Pro to power these devices with more GPU performance by using thunderbolt cable.
I want to buy an external GPU enclosure and attach it to my iMac to play games on higher graphic performance. Is that possible?
    Thanks,

  • External drive enclosure Mac Pro sleds

Does anyone know of an external esata enclosure that uses the same sleds as the Mac Pro (2006)? I'm starting to make regular backups of each internal drive to be stored offsite, and swapping regularly too so I'm sure the backups are good, and I'd rather not have to pull out a screwdriver everytime I swap. I guess a dock that would work with the sleds attached is also an option.

What about such a simple USB to SATA adapter like http://www.computeruniverse.net/products/90316932.asp?agent=619

  • External RAID Enclosure

Hi guys, my external raid enclosure Mapower TB32 broke down saying I/O to the disk is failing. So I am seeking to replace it with an external enclosure which can give me at least Raid 5 with 1.5 tb disk. I use an internal areca 1110 in Raid 0.
Which one would you recommend for a budget of GBP£400. I was looking at the Areca 5020. Is there anything else I should consider here.
    Thank you.

OK! I managed to get a Q5 as my external raid HDD. Now I have got 2 1.5TBs WD15EADS Western Digital HDDs hooked on my Areca 1110 in RAID 0. Apparently these drives are really slow for some reason, I don't know why. They are beaten by a single Seagate Hybrid in terms of benchmark. On the other hand I was planning to use theSE WD in RAID 5 alongside the 2 Seagate 1.5TBs. In addition I ordered another Seagate 1.5TB and when delivered it indicated that its a 5400rpm rather than the 7200, I currently have. So this means that I may have to RMA this HDD. Unfortunately one of my 1.5tbs just gone dead and needs to be RMA.
Now the major question that is worrying me now is which are the HDDs to go for here. The Seagate 1.5tb @ 7200rpm appears to be out of production and they are nowhere to be seen here in Egland. I am currently considering to sell the Western Digital and the remaining Seagate on Ebay and go for something else. Are the 5400rpm 1.5tb good for HD editing or the 1tbs @7200rpm.
Can someone help here,, some advise will be greatly appreciated.

  • Question using an external RAID enclosure

I am considering purchasing an external RAID enclosure (4-bay) made by Rosewill. Has anyone had any experience with them? I'm specifically looking at the model RSV-S4-X which includes a PCIe Sata card and cable.
Any "gotchas" I should be looking at or taking into consideration?
    Thanks in advance.
    Carl

Well, I had spent time trying to find reviews but where I did find a review it was with Windows - not Mac OSX. And the reviews I read were mixed. So, the question here was if anyone had experience with this product (or something similar) with a MacPro.
    Thanks,

  • USB External HDD Enclosure with a 500GB HDD!!

    Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone has come across using a 3rd party USB external HDD enclosure with a hard drive (mine is 500GB HDD). What I am trying to do is to format the HDD so both PC and MAC can use it but it will be mainly connected to my iMAC. I have tried by using PC to format the HDD to NTFS but MAC will not show the HDD on the desktop when I plug the USB to the back of the iMAC.
I have done some researches and it seems the only way to do make this possibe is to format it into FAT32. So I have tried to use FDisk to make the partition but it doesn't seems to support anything bigger than 120GB, now I am really stuck. If anyone knows any quick and painless solution, please spare me some advice.
    Headache!!

Windows can use, but not format, large FAT32 partitions. Microsoft wants to discourage using FAT32 for portable storage (for marketing reasons).
The solution is to use Mac's Disk Utility to format the disk as FAT32 (misnamed MS-DOS in Disk Utility). The disk will then be read/write by both Mac and PC.
Also, it's worth pointing out that you can read and write NTFS disks using MacFUSE with the NTFS-3G plugin. Albeit, this is very awkward to do unless you've got some UNIX shell experience.

  • Can a 10.6.8 drive boot from an external usb enclosure on a 2013 mac mini running natively on 10.8.3?

I primarily use a 2011 MBP running 10.6.8 as my primary work computer. My wife also has a MBP that runs on 10.7.X. I'm able to take the drive out of my MBP, put it in an external enclosure and boot it from my wife's MBP. However, on the Mac Mini I just bought yesterday (10.8.3), it does not boot. It just hangs on the white/grey Apple logo screen.
Is 10.6.8 no longer compatible to boot on a machine that is 2 years newer? Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks in advance.

So in order to make this work, I'd have to:
    1. upgrade my 2011 MPB to Mountain Lion? Is that even possible? It looks like Apple is doing a free OS X upgrade to Mavericks and 10.6.8 is included: http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
However, this worries me a bit because of software compatibility. Not sure what it's going to do to all my software.
    2. Buy an older pre-mountain lion Mac Mini.
    3. Virtual machine. I'm not a fan of using Virtual machines. It eats up too much RAM.

  • External drive enclosure, USB 2 mounts, firewire invisible!

I have a venus ds3 external enclosure with a 300GB 7200rpm WD hard drive inside it. The enclosure works fine with windows and usb2, and it is also detected and mounted on usb2 on my mini (1.25ghz ppc mini). However, nothing happens when I try to use the firewire connection on the mini. In system profiler, I see:
    FireWire Device Tree
    FireWire Bus
    Unknown Device
It is an oxford fw911 chipset, and I did run the updater to FW911V4_00_0000Release.bin, but still no firewire action. The updater saw the enclosure via firewire on my mac, but os x will not see the drive itself.
Am I doomed to using usb2? Would it still be possible to boot from this drive on usb2 instead of firewire?
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   upgraded to 512MB ram

    problem is
you cannot use 300 gigs as fire wire on any mac mini
the max you can use is only 200 gigs before mac os x
    no longer recongnizes the drive
so you need a 200 gig hard drive sorry
Is there some documentation that you could cite on the 200gb barrier?
I'm also interested if it's a ppc-mini only problem or if it affects other systems as well.
I have a 250gig firewire drive on my wife's intel mac mini
and it works fine. Even if it only regognized on 200gig and
I didn't notice, it mounted and worked.
I now have it partitioned into 2 samller volumes. So, if it's
a problem on the PPC mac, then he should be able to
partition the drive and make it work.
I just now tried partitioning it again via usb, and made two 137gb partitions (or whatever odd number it came out to be), and it was still not recognized when I switched over to firewire.
If it turns out that john was right, and nothing over 200gb will work, can I still get some use out of the drive? Can I install applications on it or move the swap files over to it?

  • Hacking a LaCie ATA External Firewire Enclosure

Recently hacked my FireWire LaCie external To make it a universal FireWire  plug-n'-play ATA adapter for just about any ATA 3.5 drive. Total cost was $0.00!! It works like a dream and is far faster than any ATA USB external, since it's Firewire.
A useful repurpose for an otherwise tired LaCie external. Thought others might like to know it can be done easily. This is so handy—Especially if the drive in your LaCie is full or needs to be replaced and LaCie is out of warranty. It's very simple. All need is some extra time, and a bunch of old drives laying around collecting dust. I'm now able to store all my native iMovie and iDVD files on the old ATA drives. :-)
    The Story:
I had an old LaCie 120 GB external that housed an ATA Western Digital HD. After almost filling up the drive with back-up files, (a few years later), I noticed the HD was faltering. It was having trouble writing files to other drives and the like. I decided it was time to tear the external housing apart and maybe put a new drive in it. First I copied off all my important data to another drive.
After getting it apart I was surprised to see that the drive inside was nothing but a Western Digital ATA 120 GB drive. I initially thought it would be a LaCie brand HD.
It was connected with a Molex power plug and a short 40 pin data ribbon. I lengthened both so I could quickly attach drives on the outside of the case by simply plugging them in. Ie.- (Plug-N-Play). Just make sure the jumpers on the drives you want to plug in are set to "Master" and your good to go.
    The How:
I added length to the Molex power wires by first removing the stock LaCie Molex power plug from the 4 power wires, then soldered on 4 more inches of wire that were already coming out of a used Molex plug. Thus, lengthening the power wires by 4 inches. I used shrink tubing on all the soldered connections then covered that with electrical tape. I added a zip tie to the frame-work on the inside of the LaCie case and anchored the power wires to it. That way, the power wires would not be accidentally pulled out of the circuit board when attaching and reattaching drives. I replaced the LaCie (short) drive data ribbon with a much longer drive data ribbon scabbed out of an old PC. Now I could attach any ATA drive on the outside of the LaCie case, without opening it up. I did have to make some cut-outs in the aluminum LaCie case to accommodate the exiting power wires and data cable to be able to snap the LaCie case back together. It's not glamourous, but it works great for attaching and removing any ATA HD quickly.
    Cheers! :-)

    BDAqua,
Thanks. And thanks for that tip. Your right that some of the enclosures are limited to the drive size that came with the enclosure. Luckily my enclosure was made for at least 120GB.   Most of the old HDs I have laying around are smaller than 120GB. Not sure if the LaCie enclosure would have a limit on it or not.

  • WD 750GB HDD won't erase or repartition, using external HDD enclosure, what am I doing wrong?

I have the late 2008 aluminum macbook running Mountain Lion with the original 250gb hard drive, and the hard drive's been sitting at over 90% full for months. I've been needing to upgrade it for a while, so I bought a 2.5" WD Scorpio Black 7200 rpm 750GB HDD and a StarTech 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure (SAT251OU2).
Once inserted into the enclosure and plugged with USB into the mac, a green light on the enclosure comes on and a message comes up reading "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and gives me the options to Intialize..., Ignore, or Eject. To allow for the Disk Utility to see the disk, I press the Intialize...
When I run disk utility and select the 750.16 GB WDC WD75 ... HD and run erase: format Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or Partition the Drive (has a disk2s2 partition by default) to 1 Partition with the option of GUID Partition Table (and Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and hit apply, the disk utility will run for about 30 seconds, while reading Formatting (default partition name) disk2s2 as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with name [name I specified].
The light on the external enclosure changes from green to amber when the formatting starts, then about 20 seconds in a message stating "Partition failed, Partition failed with the error: File system formatter failed," and a hard drive click sound occurs, the enclosure's lights blink green and amber (or red) for a few seconds, then shortly afterwards a message reads, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with a prompt allowing me to again start the process over: Intialize..., Ignore or Eject.
How can I format this disk and use it with my mac? I was hoping to clone my original hard drive.

Any ideas on how to get the HDD to format, or whether it's a bad enclosure or hard drive?
