AL iMac Crashes Gigabit Airport Extreme

I purchased the 24" 2.4Ghz aluminim iMac and the latest gigabit Airport Extreme N, a few weeks back. I was already using the previous non-gigabit Aiport Extreme N with a macbook, macbook pro, apple tv, tivo, and xbox 360 with no problems.
After getting the iMac up and running however, my Airport Extreme started crashing every few hours. I replaced it with the new gigabit Airport Extreme but the crashes continued. If I turn the iMac off completely, everything works fine. However, with the iMac on, the Airport Extreme will crash a few times a day. By crash I mean that all devices lose their connection to the Airport and the network is no longer visible to any of the devices. I have to powercycle (unplug) the Airport Extreme and then all devices can connect to the network again - until the next crash.
I've seen that others have problems with the connection being dropped - but is anyone having issues with the Airport Extreme crashing altogether?

I should also note that the iMac and Airport Extreme are not very close to each other. They are abut 25 feet apart in different rooms.

  • HP Laserjet USB Connection Does Not Work with Gigabit Airport Extreme

I have set up my Airport Extreme Gigabit edition. It works well for wireless internet. BUT, I connected my HP Laserjet 1300 via a working USB cable, and it doesn't print properly at all. This Laserjet uses the HP Universal Drivers in Vista, which should work with the Extreme if anything should. I have set up and located the printer in Bonjour as instructed.
With the PCL6 driver, I get one page that prints out portions of the test page text, but with most of it missing, and then a second page saying:
    PCL XL error
    Subsystem: KERNEL
    Error: UnsupportedProtocol
    Operator: 0x0
    Position: 0
The PCL5 driver prints out "a" page, but the text comes out as solid black lines instead.
I have tried turning the printer on and off, the router on and off, and deleting the printer and re-creating it in Bonjour, as suggested by Apple's technical support document. Nothing works. I have downloaded the latest Windows software and router firmware for this product, both of which were released recently. Same result. I also tried connecting my laptop via a Gigabit port instead of wirelessly to see if that would help. Nope.
I have seen a few postings in other forums (not here) saying that the Airport Express (Gigabit) firmware has problems with HP printers connected via USB, which seems hard to believe given their ubiquity. If that is the case, I'd appreciate a straight answer from somebody on when it will be fixed. Some have suggested just using Ethernet, but I purchased this product (and therefore paid extra) for the USB print server, and expect to get that working.
    Thanks very much.

I have an HP laserjet 4L with a usb adapter connected to the airport via a usb hub, and have had little trouble, except for last night it kept printing 1 partial page over and over. I printed multiple pages at once, I figured the printer just OD'd, after all its an old printer. I have one laptop that uses Vista, and its always giving me grief. Vista

USB Backup drive connected to USB port on Airport Extreme. Running system 10.5.5
On my Macbook Pro, which I connect wirelessly, I was able to start Time Machine... Time Machine saw the backup drive and did a backup.. Yes it took a long time!! Anyway all is cool with that.
My iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme by Ethernet. On the iMac when I started Time Machine, it does not see the backup hard drive. I can see and share the hard drive... works fine. But no luck with TM seeing the hard drive on the iMac.
Questions is will Time Machine work with a computer that is connected to airport extreme by ethernet. If yes how o you set it up and what might be wrong??
yes, it should work. hard to say what's wrong. try the following terminal command. it should not be necessary but it should help.
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
One other important thing to mention. At first I plugged my new backup hard drive directly into the iMac with firewire 800. I started time machine and started the backup. I then stopped that backup and plugged the backup hard drive into the Airport extreme (USB port) I then trashed the partial backup folder off the backup hard drive. Is it possible that on the iMac there is still some TM file there pointing to the old original backup file??
have you emptied trash? you should. the files won't really be deleted till you do. there is one other hidden file but it should not be necessary to remove it.
    Thanks.... any help is appreciated.

  • Crashes with Airport extreme

I'm trying to set up a wireless network at home, part of which involves an external hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme base. My iTunes library is too big to keep on the laptop, so it is on the external drive. When I'm listening to stuff through iTunes, everything seems to work alright for a while, and then iTunes locks up. I get a spinning pinwheel that goes on forever. If I force quit, it will be removed from the list of running applications, the window will disappear from the desktop, but the icon in the dock will have a little bullet next to it as if it were still running. If I re-open the force quit menu, iTunes will return to the list every time, even though there is no evidence that it is actually running. If I try to restart the computer, the whole thing freezes up and the computer can only be forced to shut down by holding the power button down. After the restart, iTunes continues to remain useless (if not crash-inducing) and the external hard drive is inaccessible. The only temporary fix is to re-setup the base station with the airport utility. No problems arise if the hard drive is connected directly to the computer. This problem has happened with each version of iTunes since the AirPort Extreme was released.
Here's what I got (from the wall out)
    DSL modem (in bridge mode)
Airport Extreme (handling DHCP/NAT stuff, up-to-date firmware))
-printer and LaCie d2 250 gig HD connected via USB to Base Station
-First gen MacBook pro 17" connected via AirPort to Base Station (which I don't believe have airports that support the n protocol)
-AirPort Express (doesn't affect stability. the freeze-ups happen whether I'm on the network through the base station or the express)
    help please
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I have the same exact problem as you! I have been asking everyone on this forum for help about this, but nobody ever responds with an answer. I tried resetting my modem and router, and that seemed to help, but after copying files to different hard drives, I still get an error... after I check to see if anything copied, it actually worked! It never shows me the copy animation, all I get is an hourglass. When I try copying wirelessly to the same drive using my Macbook Pro, it works like a champ! I thought maybe the Airport Extreme doesn't work well with XP, but others say they have no problems. Should I reformat a partition of my hard drive to something that works better with the Airport Extreme?

  • Connecting "older" pc and new iMac desktop via Airport extreme

Please bear with me...I am a Mac novice. My husband and I just purchased our first mac (iMac 20" desktop)and had it up and running in 2 minutes. We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth (whose signal it is remains a mystery). We purchased the airport extreme to access the internet via our Dell's 2 y/o cable modem (comcast Motorola Surfboard)before we realized we had a hotspot in our house. We also want to use the printer that is connected to our pc with our mac. I cannot get the airport configured at all...I keep getting error messages. The first one that appears says that my wireless interface is not enabled. I went to My Network Places and set up the wirless network using a USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one appeared in the list of devices detected when I reconnected the flashdrive to my pc. I've tried rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both the modem and the aiport from the power supply. Should I reset the airport? Help!!
    iMac 20" desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth
(whose signal it is remains a mystery).
This is very likely to be a neighbour's wireless or Airport network (not Bluetooth).
    I cannot get the
airport configured at all...I keep getting error
    messages.
Don't use the PC to configure the Airport Extreme Base Station, use the iMac, it will be easier.
The first one that appears says that my
    wireless interface is not enabled.
You are probably trying to use the Airport Assistant, this will only work on a wireless computer, in order to configure an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from a wired PC, you need to connect to the AEBS via the LAN port and then use the Airport Admin Utility.
Connecting a XP PC to a Airport Network via the LAN port of the AEBS
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1007.html
However still configure the AEBS via the iMac.
    I went to My
Network Places and set up the wirless network using a
USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's
USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one
appeared in the list of devices detected when I
reconnected the flashdrive to my pc.
That Microsoft wireless process only works with other Windows PCs, it won't work with a Mac or the AEBS.
    I've tried
rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both
the modem and the aiport from the power supply.
Try using the Mac to configure the Airport network using the Assistant.
    Should I reset the airport?
You may need to, but sounds like you haven't managed to configure it, so it will still be in the default state.
We also want to use the printer that is
connected to our pc with our mac.

  • Airplay icon missing on iMac after installing airport extreme

Can't get my iMac to display the airplay icon after changing to the AirPort Extreme wireless router.
    Previous Setup:
Cable Modem ->LinkSys Wireless Router -> AirPort Express for Home Stereo access using Airplay
Accessed Airplay from iPhone 5S, iPad, iMac - all worked
    NEW Setup:
Replaced old wireless router with Airport Extreme
Cable Modem -> Airport Extreme -> Airport Express for Airplay on home speaker system
Airport Utility (v 6.3.2) see's both the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express
The Airport Express is in Network Mode of :Join a wireless network.  My AirPort Extreme wifi network is Why Phi
    The Airplay option is selected
My iMac does not see the airplay option in the menu bar.
Note:  The Airplay icon used to show up on my iMac before I had the AirPort Extreme.
My iPhone 5s see's the AirPort Express for airplay, and plays the music fine.
The display for my iMac is flagged to show for AirPlay but it doesn't see any devices.
If you know what I have missed, please let me know!  I loved the AirPlay option from my iMac, and would really like to get it back!

The AirPlay icon within iTunes appears when iTunes "discovers" that an active AirPlay-ready "speaker" is available on the network. In this case the speaker would be your AirPort Express base station.
It may be possible that the Express has not properly joined the Wi-Fi network provided by the new Extreme base station.
Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • IMac cannot locate airport extreme

I have lost my internet connection because my iMac suddently fails to locate the airport extreme, but if I run Windows 7 under Parallel on the same iMac, I can connect to the internet. I think I have messed up some of the files. I will appreciate any help. Thanks.

First I'd unplug the AirPort Extreme for 15 minutes to see if that helps.  If not, try a "factory default reset" of the Extreme.

  • Does Canon S750 Inkjet Printer work with Gigabit Airport Extreme?

I've got an older USB printer, the Canon S750. I see that it's compatible with the older UFO Airport Extreme, but I can't find any info about the new Extreme Base Station. Anybody know if it's compatible? Is there a list here somewhere on what printers are compatible? Thanks!

I guess I can answer my own question... Tested, and yes it is compatible and works just fine.

  • Connecting iMac to Airport Extreme using ethernet

OK, I feel like and idiot! Please help!
I bought an Airport Extreme so I could connect my iMac directly via ethernet and send a wireless signal out to an iBook and a Windows laptop. I connected the ethernet cable from the iMac to the Airport Extreme, but I cannot connect via ethernet. Also, no green light comes on when I connect the cable (in the LAN <...> port).
This seems like it should be so simple, but I can't find any help on this!

don't know if you are in the US or not but shared (IP/internet connection) doesn't seem to work unless you choose US in the settings as the country where you will use the base station.
i have spent the last 3 days pulling my hair out and trying to get my airport extreme to work with no luck. wizard, manual settings.. nothing worked. i could not get 'shared public IP address' to work.. no internet unless i used bridged mode and then only on the machine with the direct ethernet connection to the base station. yesterday i had given up and i went to the store and purchased a D-Link GigE wireless router (that i'm taking back today, unopened).
I decided to give it one more try to no avail... but just on a fluke i decided to switch the 'country to be used in' to US instead of Canada (where i live) and BOOM... went through the wizard amazingly everything worked fine!!! i couldn't believe my eyes.

  • Airport Extreme crashes when transferring files in iTunes

    Hi guys!
I'm running itunes library off an airdisk for one of my computers, it works fine when i play music from it but it crashes my airport extreme every time i try to edit or add music into the library. it will just say that i'm disconnected from that drive after itunes hangs for about 5 minutes and my network (internet, home network, airdisk) will stop working until i restart my router.
i've had similar set up before with a G5 and never had an issue, but that was on ethernet, my new setup is through wifi. I've read that there was an issue when transferring large files from computer to airdisk over wifi, but i didn't see the issue in finder, this only happens in itunes.
i have itunes 10.0.0.1 and the lasted firmware for airport extreme. I've tried simply dragging the files into my itunes and even tried using home sharing to transfer songs from another computer with a local itunes library, both crash the router. I ended up dragging one album at a time (about 10 songs at a time), it works for the first few transfers, but eventually locks up after awhile.
Did a bit of research, some say it's might be some kind of channel interference, did a little istumbler and it only showed very little noise so i'm not sure that's the case. is anyone else experiencing this? thanks in advance!

The fixed IP address solved the problems I was having with Time Machine and I did verify that the problem was not Time Machine but any disk access, however yes, it is possible that iTunes is having a problem dealing with a networked disk. I don't think it's the way that Apple really intended it to work, with the iTunes library on a networked disk, however you might be able to come up with some work arounds to make it work. Here's some suggestions if the fixed IP does not solve the problem:
Copy files you want to import to the drive first using the Finder. Put the files in the folder where all your music is automatically sorted if you have "copy to iTunes folder" and "organize iTunes folder" selected in preferences. What you should have now is all the artist named folders and then the new music all listed in this directory. Sort the window in list view so all the music and the folders are separated to make it easier to select the music. Now drag the music into iTunes. If it's in this folder, the files should not be copied into iTunes. They should just get linked to and then moved into their proper folders. It would also help diagnosing the problem if you could find out whether copying the same files using the Finder did work, so you would be looking for a work-around and also further diagnosing exactly what the problem is.
If you have an external USB drive, you could use that instead and plug it into the Time Capsule for access, but into the computer just when you need to manage/add to the media on the drive.
Another problem you are likely to come across is if you attempt to play back video content, especially HD content. I don't think iTunes expects the media to be on a network drive and therefore does not buffer sufficiently to play the content smoothly like it does if you were streaming the media to an AppleTV, for example.

  • What can I do with just a Built-in AirPort Extreme on a new iMac.

If I get a new iMac (Built-in AirPort Extreme), and plug my internet modem to it, my other computer (G5 10.5.8) should be able to connect to the internet wirelessly? Can it also use the printer attached to the iMac?
    Thanks in advance!

So it's a Power Mac G5. The answer is yes. That's one of the ways a router is designed to work. The "router" is the AirPort Extreme Base Station in this case. It obviously has wireless, but it also has Ethernet ports for a wired connection. So if it's convenient for the Power Mac G5 to be located near the ISP's modem device (and router), that will work.
You can also add wireless to a Power Mac G5 without Apple's AirPort card, which is hard to find and somewhat slow by today's standards.
If it is the older Power Mac G5 model (not the last "dual core" version), it has PCI slots. You can get something like this
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXP802NPCI/
or for any Power Mac G5
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MXP802NU2C/
There are other similar products, but make sure there are Mac OS X drivers for the product.
If you can locate the Power Mac G5 near the router, and you are going to get an AirPort Extreme Base Station, you should just connect it with an Ethernet cable. A wired connection is faster and more reliable than wireless.

  • How large of an Ethernet Switch can you add to an Airport Extreme gigabit router?

I have a gigabit Airport Extreme router. I like using the Airport Utility to control my network. I want to convert a large number of wireless connections to wired ethernet devices, about 24. The reason is that I just get too many wireless dropouts, and I need a more reliable network. I am looking for the best way to design this. It seems like adding a gigabit Ethernet switch is the easiset and best way to accomplish this. My questions are:
    1. How large of a gigabit switch can you add to the LAN port of an Airport Extreme: 24-port, 48-port?
    2. How far down can you cascade switches? In other words, can I connect three 5-port switches (level 1 switches) to the three LAN ports on the Airport Extreme, and then connect more 5-port switches to the level 1 switches?
    3. What are the performance implications for either design. Can you achieve gigabit performance with these designs?
    Thanks for the help.

I have a network with an Extreme base station, 3 Extreme wired extenders and 1 express wired extender - in the mix are four 24 port gigabit switches and two 8 port gigabit switches - so you can add as much as you want within the limits of the internal IP address range which is controling the number of devices on the network.

  • Airport extreme drops out on imac, but not on powerbook....

    Hi
    Here's what i have running.
A 4 year old powerbook which always connects just fine to the internet, with no dropping of the signal.
A new imac with a airport extreme built in. It regularly just drops the internet connection, even though the internet is seen perfectly by the other machine.
Router is a standard netgear router virgin media provide.
Periodically, and some days it will be totally fine, but mostly on the weekends (like now) the signal on the imac just drops out (from perfect 4 bars, to none) and i lose access to the internet on this machine (very annoying when you are trying to talk to someone on skype!). after some time it reappears, only to drop out again.
I have reset the modem to automatically select a wireless channel, but that seems to have done nothing. So following the advise on other chats here, i set the channel to 10. However the problem remains. I thought, well, maybe its the wireless phone, or the microwave, but these do not seem to affect the internet connection to the powerbook g4. The software updater for the "airport utility" claims it is up to date.
And now i am totally lost as to what to do! Any suggestions? Thanks

I have this very same issue. Reproducable on 2 laptops (ibook and powerbook), both 10.4.3, to 2 separate ftp servers.
    Transmit fails as well.
Fetch, however, seems to work just fine. Does Fetch not use the underlying ftp command line app?
Transferring small files (under 1k) seems to work though.
The message I get is as follows:
421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
Timesout for 10-20 seconds, then I get the message. Setting the transfer mode to "binary" manually seems to correct the issue. But this won't work for what I'm doing (Dreamweaver, which must use the command line ftp?).
Attempting to ftp the same files from my local Solaris and Linux servers seems to work just fine.
    sftp works.
    Apple? Is ftp broken?

  • How do I make an Airport Extreme work with a Linksys WRT160N

I have a Linksys WRT160N V3 Router that I have connected to my cable modem. I have an iMac in another room along with a PC based laptop. Range is fine to get them to connect wirelessly. However what I would like to do is to also connect my Blu-Ray device to the internet. However it isn't wireless. I was told I could use an Airport Extreme to bridge to my WRT160N. What I want to do is hardwire connect my Blu-Ray player and perhaps my iMac to the Airport Extreme using my WRT160n's access to the cable modem. Basically I'm trying to make to wirelss routers talk to each other. I can't seem to make the Airport Extreme work. Any assistance would be great.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Welcome to the discussions, Gonzotoo!
+I was told I could use an Airport Extreme to bridge to my WRT160N+
Unfortunately, this is not correct. The AirPort Extreme does not have the capability that you need. If you could connect the Linksys and Extreme together using an ethernet cable, it would function as you wish. Or, if it's not possible to connect them using an ethernet cable, you might take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the AC wiring in your home.
