Alarm improvements

I'm annoyed that the iPhone is not as easy to manage as my old Nokia Communicator in relation to alarms and silent mode. The hard switch for silent is great but I always forget to turn it back on in the morning. My communicator could simply be set each morning to come on at a pre-set time. Why can't I do this on the iPhone? Also the vibrate mode is too loud. I should also have more flexibility with an "airplane" mode type option which can be pre-set to turn off at a particular time. Even better if I could set up a profile type option to turn silent - and airplane mode on - and turn both off at a pre-set time next morning it would be even better.

I started using the Alarm with my Nokia recently. As alarm tone i selected a song. Unfortunatly the alarm switches itself off after 1 min? Can this be changed. It quite annoying if you sleep deep and cant hear the alarm or want to keep listening to the song while waking up.
It would be nice to have the alarm keep running. Or even make it play a playlist.

Lack of good functionality for iPod Nano alarm timer?

Hi, I'm the proud new owner of a Gen 2 - 2GB Nano, and I had figured that between the Sleep function, the Alarm function, and the Stopwatch function, it would be something I could use to listen to music while working out, and at the same time use it as a timer for the couple of exercises I do that I'd like to time (as opposed to counting).
I would think this would be a key use of Nanos by many people, but what I find is that all of the options are less than desirable.
Alarm: I could set the alarm to go off at the allotted time, but what I would want is the "beep" and for the "beep" to come through the headphones. I'm listening to music using the headphones, so I don't to hear the "beep" emitting from the Nano's "internal speaker". Selecting a Playlist to be the alarm sound does work to alert me to it being time to switch exercises, but "switch" is the key problem here because it switches to that new (or the beginning of the same) Playlist. In other words, the main function of the Nano for me is to listen to music, and perhaps that will be an entire album while I work out, but using the Playlist feature for the sound of the alarm means I will be interrupted in the midst of, say, track 4 of the Playlist I'm wanting to listen to for my workout.
Sleep Timer function: Only allows me to select in 15 minute intervals (I need 11 or 12 minutes for one particular exercise, though I could live with 10 minutes, but that’s not even there). Plus the abrupt shutoff of the music that's playing is horrible. The intent of the Sleep Timer function of course makes the 15 minute interval choices make sense, but a bit of a fade for the music shutoff would be an improvement (and less likely to wake someone up who was just drifting off). If the Sleep Timer could actually let me set the number of minutes, it would be my solution (since upon stopping the music that’s playing, that position in the Playlist is retained and one can start listening again where one left off).
Stopwatch: Stopwatch isn't really useful for what I'm trying to do. It would be, of course, if it had a "timer" setting that let you program it for a number of minutes to count down, then upon reaching zero it would beep in the headphones along with the music being played, or just fade the music that’s playing, similar to what the Sleep Timer does, though it does it abruptly...
So two questions:
1. Do any more experienced iPod owners know of a way I can do what I’m trying to do? (Play music, be alerted when a specific number of minutes are up, and not have the position in the Playlist of the music I’m listening to be lost.)
2. What is the way to make suggestions to Apple for changes to the iPod software?
Any help/comments appreciated!

Thank you, Jeff, for the couple of answers. I did put in a couple enhancement requests via the http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html link, and I imagine such requests carry more weight if others also request them.
I requested that Apple make it so one can be alerted to an alarm via the headphones without losing the position in the playlist that one is listening to, or that the Sleep Timer be changed to accept a number of minutes rather than just choosing between the 15 minute increments. (Either being a means to time something (excersize, hard-boiling an egg, sex, or anything) and be alerted when the time is up without having to lose one's place in the Playlist.)
I also requested that the Sleep Timer function use a fade-out rather than the abrupt shut-off of the music.
Again, thanks for the link, and thanks for confirming that you too can't find a way to do the timed periods in the way that I would think many others would want.

A mass request ( Things need to be added, improved...

Things need to be added, improved, modifying or even be developed in any update or upcoming version of Windows Phone - in my opinion - are as follows :
System Improvements :
1- Windows Phone must include a System , folder & files Management app as embedded app rather than an external or independent limited functions app . Also files Explorer or Files Management app should handle all files ( whatever it was ) that are being transfered through Bluetooth and shows save location on the mobile .
2- Install applications from external memory ( SD Card ) without needing to Internet connection , as well as doing search in the phone using Bing search button without need for an Internet connection .
3- Allow phone book contacts linking to any of Social or communication , dialing or calling apps , such as Line , Telegram , KakaoTalk & WhatsApp as an example and not being limited to Skype, Facebook or Linkedin only .
4- Windows Phone must support running Adobe flash files ( swf & flv ) , Animated GIFs & Java files to be run & play on all WP8 devices .
5- Fix consuming huge amounts of data on memory by installed apps , the matter that often not found on a PC! .
6 - one of many defects / faults / shortcomings in WP 8.1 is that user can't add any apps by himself to run within apps for video calls that exist in phone settings , nor adding apps in notifications action center , or apps that its status can be appear on lock screen , unlike ( rather than ) predefined apps by system itself , as well as , there is no ( choice / function / option ) to add an application that can be used to run different function , such as selecting Adobe photoshop Express to be within apps that can run picture files captured .
7- There is no data connection switching & data speed connection type ( 4,3,2 G ) switching function in WP 8.1 notifications + actions center as well as Alarms function .
8- Support memory Card readers and flash USB through mobile's micro USB .

1- Much bigger support for major & significant applications in all areas and categories .
2- Improving & Enhancing Office document working experience & make preloaded or saved html browsed files can be readable easily .
Office Mobile that's run on WP is extremely primitive , unlike Android office suite Kingsoft Office that include most of desktop office suite features & WP 8.1 Office app still run with a primitive edition that was running on Symbian powered NOKIA mobiles in the early second millennium !
3- Must support & providing with Google apps & services , such as : Gmail , Google Drive , Translate , Maps , Earth , Youtube , Books , Google Chrome , Cloud Print , Voice , Wallet , Sites , Scholar , Panoramio .
4- Develop & improve group video calls apps that can send and share various file types plus adding simultaneous group sharing or common group action / work for the same file in the same moment feature. that means you can open a video file for watching while all participants can watch it playing in the same time . Also we can open an app like papyrus and all what we do writing in is shown for all participants in the same time and also they can do writing in and save what they have done. Also, when playing audio file, all participants can listen to it at the same time ( this is completely different from upload and sharing feature and may looks like web conferencing ).
5- Improving & Enhancing Remote Access apps & technologies for Devices & Systems Administration .
Browser improvements :
1- Adding Save Page as feature for html webpages that have been saved through G.Chrome in Windows 7 or have been browsed through IE 11 on WP 8.1 .
2- an important functions in IE doesn't exist or discarded , such as home page button & Navigation buttons ( back & forward ) .
Store Improvements :
1- resolve problem of store restricted download for certain apps that are dedicated to particular region .
2- Install applications from external memory ( SD Card ) without needing to Internet connection .
Maps Improvements :
Enhancing maps applications by adding ability to add places and landmarks to the map by the user , for example when I go for a trip or a picnic , I pass with someplace or landmark , such as a shopping mall , pharmacy or bookshop , ... etc where I like to add and save such this location data ( Name , info & details ) on map , then find it later through search function on this app like here maps or here drive .
Wallet Improvements :
WP 8.1 Wallet should be improved to support and accept shop , buy from and payment for various websites and online stores , such as ebay , Amazon & Ali express and not being limited to buy from and pay for Microsoft stores only .
Also , WP 8.1 Wallet became so primitive , because it is not ordered and categorized like previous WP version ( 8 ) , where you can name every card , set its details & infos and let ( allow ) you add various types of payment cards , such as : debit cads , offers : discounts coupons , subscriptions , memberships , prepaid cards , bank accounts ( your online mobile banking service data ) & E- payment accounts like Paypal rather than improve it to accept and support Mastercard paypass , electronic bill payment ( gas, electricity , water , telephone , any purchases ) like a POS machine , however it isn't like this in recent version of WP ( 8.1 ) . All the matter that Wallet takes or sync your raw , primary and so basic data as it is from your account on Microsoft ! and don't let you make any additions , modification or any specific customization .

1- Make alerts & notifications on lock screen are interactive .
2- there is no news reader function / feature on lock screen like rss feeds .

Why? To what end?
You have no business in the main OS file system and due to the way the OS works this is simply not possible.
2- Install applications from external memory ( SD Card ) without needing to Internet connection , as well as doing search in the phone using Bing search button without need for an Internet connection .
Is possible now, download the XAP from the store and copy to SDcard. Internet connection will always be needed to verify regional restrictions and ownership amongst other things.

Telegram , KakaoTalk & WhatsApp as an example and not being limited to Skype, Facebook or Linkedin only .
Talk to the respective developers, the OS provided the hooks, they need to implement this.

No modern day mobile OS supports Flash, it was discontinued a long time ago

Not sure what you are getting at here, on your PC you need about three times the application install size as well.

Any app can use the notification centre is the developer supports it, go talk to them. Otherwise this makes no sense to me at all. I have no idea what you are getting at..

Nope, when you have multiple accounts the OS will ask which account the contact needs to sync with.

Never missed the home button, actually never use it on my PC as well.. as far as back/forward goes try the back button (forward makes little sense to me anyway

Not sure what you are getting at here. IMO technologies should be used for what they are intended, not whatever side effects/hacks ppl made up oever time or at at time when there were no real options. Actually Bluetooth internet sharing is coming in the next update.

Time to improve...

Hewwo everyone...
I lately finely got my hands on the Lumia 800...
I'm quite satisfied with it, but also disappointed... I was excepting a bit more...
First, we lately blamed Nokia for the battery life...
I'm an old Symbian user and new to WP7, but because of this, I noticed a lot of things...
Before going futher, I want to tell you that I managed to down the battery drop to 57mA...
Well, only for a short while, but it mean it's possible...
This post is for both Nokia and Microsoft...
I will write down here any improvements I thought of, to help things to work better...
First Microsoft :
The two first option should help a lot in the battery saving...
-If no data needed, then data shutdown till it's needed again :
    Even if it's a smartphone, it doesn't mean we need/want to be connected all time along...
    Some people, like me as example, check e-mails only every hours...
    Same for facebook or anything else... Why should we using data when we don't need it?!
    Plus, some people don't use an expensive mobile plan, and so,
    have like 500Mo data per month... If data is always on, it's a waste...
-A way to close apps :
    It's now well know, WP7 doesn't really close the apps...
    As result, if we open an app using data, lets say facebook in web-browser,
    it will keep data on, keep updating the facebook page, and of course, kill down the battery
    (Yet I found out that closing tabs was stopping it... But yet should we thought about it...)
    Some other apps don't use data, but still kill down the battery because they're
    not really closed.
    On Symbian, we was able to see all apps in background, and close them if needed.
-More options on e-mail settings :
    Having a smartphone doesn't mean we don't have a computer...
    Once I'm at home, I have no need for my phone to get my e-mail...
    Actually on WP, we can set the e-mail to be gathered every 30 mins, hours, etc...
    But it's all day along... So, if we receive a e-mail at 2:30am, then the phone will
    gather it at 3am, wakes us up, etc...
    So more options, to set the days, the hours (like between 8am to 5pm) would help a lot...
-E-mail :
    Be able to send more file format into the e-mail... Like *.pdf files...
-More options for the camera :
    Some features are missing...
    Black and white, sephia, and more... You know what I mean...
-Clock :
    Most of people now, have contacts around the world...
    An way to add on or more clock to know time around the world would help...
-Alarm :
    Almost perfect... An option to set time alarm repeat would be fine...
-Ringtone improvement :
    Don't blame me if I look mean a bit, but here is what we call a joke...
    Before the smartphone was on the market, we was already able to use the mp3 in
    our phone as ringtone for call, sms, mms, etc..
    So why, please tell me why... Why do we have to take the pain in the *** to edit a mp3,
    cut it to 40 secs max, make it be less than 1Mo, set the type as Ringtone,
    to finely be able to use it that way...
    And yet, we can use them for call only... Not for sms, mms, e-mail, etc...
    I think you already understood where I wanted to come... It's a smartphone...
    All is in the name... does that kind of phone isn't smart enough to simply use
    mp3 like they're as ringtones?! We can except better...
-Improve Zune music/movie player :
    Yes, I must say that one is a lame... But, that is my own point of view...
    Still, at least an equalizer is missing...
    As it's a WP, maybe thinking about a tag editor for mp3 would be a cool feature...
    Be able, by clicking the time bar, to move at a point on the song...
-A possibility of background screen behind the tiles :
    Yes, may not sounds useful to you, but seeing a black screen behinds my tiles isn't
    lovely at all...
    In the same time, an option to make tiles transparent...
    So, from no transparency till full transparency, leaving only the icons on the tile...
    So the background would become a bit more useful...
I guess that is all I have on mind from Microsoft side...
Second Nokia :
I won't talk about the battery, as you're already working on your own battery issues...
-A modem access :
    lost of people have an unlimited data access...
    And therefore, using our phone as modem would help...
    If I'm not wrong, I saw a word about it saying it would come...
-Bluetooth improvement
    Bluetooth seems to have some issues...
    I can send files from my Lumia to my C7... But don't works from my C7 to my Lumia....
    Also like on most of the Nokia, a menu to see associated peripherals...
    Allow them, block them, etc...
-Compatibility with Nokia Suite :
    Zune don't have some options like Nokia Suite does...
    Saving contacts, calendar, notes, messages, etc...
    It would also help moving them from an old phone to a new one...
I spent too much time writing my post, I forgot few things...
Anyway, it's here a good list of things to change...
I'm not sure that Microsoft will come here to read that...
So if anyone know where I should post that so Microsoft would read it, please tell me...
You may also get few things in mind that need to be improved...

Z10 Product Improvement Ideas: Peak, Flow and Navigation

Note sure what the best way to get some ideas across to Blackberry but since I've been using my Z10, there are a few ways that I think that navigation and application access can be improved. Sometimes I feel that you need to perform one too many swipes to get to something, often used features are hidden, navigation techniques are inconsistent (i.e. Accessing the hub, calendar and phone) or you have to make one more button press than necessary.
I've been a BB fan for years and have had many models. Want to see Blackberry succeed. Own stock. Got the Z10 first day. Got 4 coworkers to get the Z10. Big promoter.
Here are my suggestions and maybe with enough support, we can get a few adjustments made that improve the overall user experience and make us way more efficient. I also think that Blackberry can retain its innovation in peek and flow while still giving us alternative access that we are used across different devices such as our Ipads, playbooks, Desktops, etc. A couple items will be repeated depending on the suggestion type.
1. Calendar needs to be a core feature and should always be open and accessible instantly at a click or a swipe. Access to the calendar is not easy as I think it should be. Four ways that Calendar could be more accessible:
a) Have a calendar button next to phone, search and camera buttons
b) Support a swipe action of some sort (perhaps upwards and to the left (opposite of the hub))
c) Add calendar button to the mini-swipe/scroller menu that is available in the active apps or application screen
d) It should be clickable and launchable on the hub either on the bottom menu or as a hub filter item. Having upcoming events appear by scrolling to the top of my hub items is convenient but not what I am talking about.
e) Directly from the lock screen. I should be able to click and hold on the calendar event to launch my calendar.
2. Phone calling is a core feature and needs to be launchable from the hub, the mini-swipe/scroller bar, the applications pages (as an icon) and also from the lock screen similar to the calendar (ie hold the button down). In the hub you can filter on missed/all calls but it only acts to give you a call log and not any other phone feature. Launching through the hub should provide full features.
3. Phone and Hub should both be accessible from the applications pages as an application icon. This allows me to access hub and phone in a similar manner to my other applications and also reduces the learning curve for those used to the iphone (easier adoption). I can create logical visual organization of my applications and I can essentially put the calendar, phone and hub next to each other. I really like consistent access and behaviour and this would help.
4. Hub should be available in the active applications like everything else is. It is the only feature that isn't.
5. I dislike the fact that the Hub filter opens and closes after I make a selection. I would like to be able to click on the BBM icon and see my BBM messages, then quickly click on my Texts, then my mails. I think the filters should always stay open in the mini mode unless I shrink it. i.e. Click to open filter mode with icons only, drag again to stretch and see the icons with names (I think most of us know what the icons represent anyway) and click or swipe to close the filters menu. With the menu always open, I can view all content types by themselves very quickly.
6. Hiding the delete button  in the extended menu is not efficient. If I'm looking at a photo, reading and email, reading a text just let me delete immediately. It is an action that I do enough that it should be as available as the back, forward, reply to all buttons. Save me the additional clicks.
7. When I launch the phone, I want the number keypad open. I don't want to launch the phone and then have to click again to get to the phone pad. The speed dial screen should not be shared with the missed calls. There should be a new screen with a dedicated button.
8. I've found that once you set up your speed dial or world clocks, you can't edit the order. This means you are stuck with the order that you added the items and have to start from scratch if you want to re-order. This is frustrating. I don't have the ability to think about order that early. Anyone notice that when you add a phone number to speed dial, it might use a different contact than you selected if that other contact has the same number?
8. We should be able to shortcut phone numbers to the application pages the same way we can shortcut web pages. This gives me the ability to create folders, organize phone numbers and make calls quickly. Again, learning curve for iphone converts and consistency.
9. Alarm needs to be accessible easier. It can be an application icon accessible in the applications menu. Clicking on the alarm clock icon on the top should open the alarm clock, similarly, clicking on the wifi should open wifi menu, battery should give me percentage, and maybe a quick Bluetooth on and off. Potentially support a notifications quick menu too.
10. We should be able to put the phone to sleep with a long swipe from the top. I don't get why you need to get to sleep mode by first locking with the top button, getting to the lock mode and then swiping down the curtain. Is there a way to do this that I'm missing?
11. When searching in the hub, I have to clear the search to get back to an unfiltered view. Why not a quick swipe to the right? Why when I'm searching in the hub does the bottom menu disappear? I should be able to interact with those items the same way without opening the items.
12. On the lock screen, I want quicker access to different things through three swipe actions. A swipe up opens my applications page, a swipe left opens the hub, a swipe right opens my applications page. I need to be able to open the calendar from the lock page (long press on the calendar event) and I need to be able to launch the phone (add an icon for the phone (like the camera)). Long press of the voicemail, notifications, emails, bbm or texts opens those screens.
13. Why iis there no email or missed calls preview from the lock screen like the good old days of the torch. I want to know if I should even need to unlock the phone for the new events (is this a security issue?).
14. The mini-swipe/scroller bar should appear in the hub, active applications and application pages (currently it is only on the latter two). It is a cool features. As per above, it should include calendar and phone.
15. Active applications should allow pinning and re-ordering. i.e. I lock an open application in place and then I can re-order through drag and drop. Pinning isn't my idea but I like it a lot.
16. Cool idea. If we allow users to save the layout of an active applications page, they can essentially launch 8 applications in one go in the future. i.e. You save a layout with a name and then you close the entire layout and reactivate it when you want through a list. Very powerful.
That's it for now. Would be super happy to see these adopted and interested in seeing who else has ideas, likes these ideas and hopefully with enough support maybe BB will look at these seriously. Hope they look at them.

Thought we had everything solved, however the failure to merge to HDR is solved. But the fix causes many problems. Now you can get to the final HDR picture however making small modifications will slow the computer to a crawl. The hourglass blinked for 5 minutes just to make a small highlight change.
What were the preferences restored by deleting the preference file and having Photoshop reload the defaults. These are the ones I am sure about.

By turning up memory to 50% or higher increase (1% or more) the merge to HDR screen opens as a black picture. Progress bar disappears and reappears as loading but Merge to HDR finishes with exception of black picture to start with. Click on 32 bit and.the picture appears. Local Adaption doesn't work !
Turned ON graphics card on NORMAL ,..memory back to 49% . Merge to HDR works and local adaption works. Appears not to be slow (graphics card helping now) Process bar turns on and off during Merging to HDR
Resetting all my preferences except memory (at 49% 838 MB) Merge to HDR works with the exception of a progress bar that disappears and reappears.
In conclusion with Windows XP 32bit and 4g installed (windows seeing 3g):
Memory over 49%+ GPU on =fail and progress bars turns on and off
Memory 49% + GPU off= black window and Local Adaption fails
Memory 49% + GPU on = Everything works but process bar turns on and off
GPU On= process bar failure
GPU off= process bar works but slow
Memory over 49%=Merge to HDR failure
Interesting note is that at a 40% memory setting Merge to HDR failed too

Looking for an Alarm Clock app where you do math problems to turn it off

Someone told me of an application for the iPhone that is an alarm clock in which you can use a mode that, when the alarm sounds, you need to solve a math problem or other visual test in order to cease the alarm. That way the user is more awake by the time the alarm is stopped. Sounds annoying, yes, but would be just what I need.
Anyone know which alarm app this is? Or if it even exists?

There's another app that got a lot of press recently called *Proactive Sleep*.
It works similarly to the math app mentioned above but you do a 30 second visual game when you wake up. It also records your score as well as your sleep patterns and can give you recommendations and other feedback to improve your sleeping habits.

OS 10.8 Calendar Alarms Are a Mess

What happened to alarms in Calendar? They used to work. They worked as one would expect alarms to work.
Now I get notified (only after 9 am) of events that happened yesterday even though the alarm was set for the day of the event. Snooze options? May as well drop them from the app rather than taunt the user with choices that are no choices.
9 am? This has got to be an arbitrary decision by a nameless developer at Apple. This person lives in a world different from the rest of us. I'd love to have been in on the team meeting for that decision. How does Calendar serve those people who work and function through the night?
Now we have Reminders. Hobble Calendar to drive users to Reminders. Is this the notion? If it is that's guile. That is definitely a step in the wrong direction.

It locates people in my address book in places not even close to where they are. Who at Apple figured that what was available needed fixing to point of Maps being unusable?
The developer of Paperless can't support scanners in Mountain Lion so now I'm required to use the software (old, clunky, and still working) the scanner came with to get the same job done

Apple—I'm swiftly becoming disenchanted. Not that anyone there will ever see this message. It's a shout into the void. I vote with my monetary investments. I'm fortunate enough to make a good living and can purchase whatever products I choose. It's always been Apple but I have to say my support is dropping like the functionality in applications.

Mac OS 10.8.4 is still in beta. You need to be reporting this to Apple.
What happens if you move these profiles to the Adobe/Profiles folder, or the users/Library/Colorsync/Profiles folder?
There has been a lot of discussion of this on many forums with no solution.
What forums? A google search turns up nothing but this thread.
I have not seen this problem with the released versions of 10.8.

Laptop-mode-tools fixes and improvements

I have been in contact with the autor of laptop-mode-tools and new version is coming some time next month or maybe even in March. So I decided to share my tweaks because some things are broken right now and some need improvements.
There are some modules I don't use and so didn't notice any problems with them, if there are any (lcd-brightness, video-out and those for which I don't have suitable hardware like cpufreq, iwl/ipw and sched-mc).
Alright then, first is the problem with systems where the battery doesn't report events and has no alarm support on which the auto-hibernate module depends. There is a script from gentoo-wiki which is quite popular among people with lousy batteries. It would be great if the package manager would take care of it for us. Author of laptop-mode-tools also said (on debian lists) that such script could be included in future versions, for now the common "solution" is to create a cronjob that calls /usr/sbin/laptop_mode every few minutes. I don't quite like it compared to the gentoo script. For now I include the script in the package as /usr/sbin/battery_mode and call it from rc.local on boot.
Currently there is a module called ac97-powersave that controls power management on those sound cards. Intel HDA sound cards also support this and in the future versions a module them will probably be included. For now I patch the ac97-powersave module to include the support for Intel HDA.
Bluetooth module removes bluetooth and hci_usb modules when disabling the device. However on my system it's not enough to completly turn it off. For now I patch the bluetooth module to include rfkill support. Only then the system reports a USB disconnect and the LED goes off. The default path in the patch is for my acer system with acer-wmi rfkill support.
Due to w differences the dpms-standby module is broken on many systems. The module uses xset and arguments are piped from the command w -hs where the third field is supposed to be DPMS_SCREEN but it's actually IDLE time, so xset command fails because the argument passed to xset -d is something like 4:54. On Debian/Ubuntu they went around this by including this in their acpi-support package. I didn't bother to see what they actually did, to backport it. It should be done in future laptop-mode-tools anyway. For now I just hardcode the display value for my single-user/one-X-screen system in the dpms-standby module.
Due to a simple mistake LM_VERBOSE was broken. Meaning that none of those informative status messages from laptop-mode-tools were logged when VERBOSE LOGGING was enabled. Only the output of called commands was logged. For now I fix this in the build process.
Speaking of logging, default output for verbose is /dev/stdout, and I would like to log everything to a file. So I modify it in the build process to log everything to /var/log/laptop-mode.log, and also include a logrotate script in the package. With the above fix I have a complete and informative log file.
It's not a bad idea to stop/restart laptop-mode-tools when suspending, so a pm-utils hook is helpful. Arch PKGBUILD already includes installing pm-utils support but it's actually pbbuttonsd/pmud support and not pm-utils. Such a script/hook could one day be included in laptop-mode-tools however there is/was a debate going if it's their job to provide it. I read somewhere that Ubuntu already provides such script/hook but I'm not sure if it's provided by acpi-support or laptop-mode-tools package. For now I wrote my own pm-utils hook and I include it in the build process.
Powertop suggests usbcore.autosuspend=1 sysctl, but it would be nice if we have all this power management control in one place. Usb-autosuspend module will be included in future versions of laptop-mode-tools, but for now someone wrote a module and posted it to the Debian bug tracker. I keep the module and configuration in my build dir but don't include it in the final package for now. I'll wait a bit and see how things will develop.
To help you start hacking on laptop-mode-tools you can take a look at all the above patches and my PKGBUILD. Every step is documented in PKGBUILD comments, and please do check them because some things I patch but some I modify inline with sed. this was one year ago, and I helped the author improve these things. Today I don't have to patch my laptop-mode-tools... (I still do with some minor things, but that's just to satisfy some personal preferences . Use the arch package, even the battery polling helper is included.

Flash Video Crash Frequency Becoming Alarming

I know that there is a final push to get FP 9 out the door by
the end of the month. However, I have to say that the frequency
with which my browsers are crashing, predominantly when the content
is Flash Video, is giving me some serious cause for alarm. In a
browser like Firefox, where there is one process for every window
you have open, losing multiple windows worth of work is immensely
frustrating. I have submitted this same issue via the Wish Form
several times as well, so this isn't the first I'm noting this.
Here's my (seemingly standard) setup:
Windows XP Professional with SP2, fully patched

In both cases, it is almost invariably any time one of the
Flash Video ads for Apple's new Mac campaign appears. Further, I've
noted that it gets to the point where the video looks to be done
loading and is about to play back. I went to a second machine that
had FP 8 installed, and the video played fine.
I'm a huge fan of the improvements that FP 9 is offering for
developers, but if I can't achieve stability accessing very common
web sites, I can't ask my customers to upgrade so that they can use
my Flex 2 apps....that just won't fly.

Bug in entering alarm time

When you first set up an alarm, the default "15 minutes before" appears. The problem is that the program assumes you are too stupid to remember to put in some number for the alert time. So, it does not allow you to erase both of the displayed digits, because there must always be at least one digit entered in the window. It therefore turns what should be a dirt-simple one-step edit into an unnecessary and stupid 2-step process:
Let's say you want to put in "30 minutes" instead of 15. You can NOT just select and delete the 15 and type 30, because iCal insists on leaving at least one of the existing digits. So, you have to go through a contorted combination of typing and deleting. For example, you can type 30 in front of the 15 to get 3015 minutes, or type 30 after the 15 to get 1530 minutes, and then you can delete the 15 digits. That's ridiculous.
The essential problem is that Apple still refuses to make it easy to report bugs like this that should have easy fixes. You can get reams of support and troubleshooting stuff, but when there is an obvious problem like this one, or an easy improvement or fix, you can only complain about it here, and there is no way of knowing if anyone from Apple ever reads this stuff. (Maybe there's a suggestion page for iCal -- if so, it's well hidden.)
I love Mac OS X. I hate Windows. We can only hope that never the twain shall meet in terms of customer responsiveness and basic intelligence.

Thanks. I've posted the feedback bug report. By why are the feedback forms so nearly impossible to find? If they are listed in any links, they are certainly not obvious. And the form I filled out is under the Mac tab, not the Support tab -- that's not the least bit obvious.

Possible N70 Improvements

Overall I'm happy with my new N70, but there are a few things that I think could easily be improved in a future firmware version. If you have others, perhaps you could add them, or if I'm doing something wrong, let me know! (Most of them are things my 6230 did, but I can't do now)
1. Use Radio or mp3 as alarm tone.
2. Option to turn off Nokia tune on switch on. Useful when in quiet places or when you don't want to advertise your phone to the world!
3. Full functionality with CK-7W using the Pop Port connection.
4. Name order of contacts only applies to list. If you choose first name first, last name is still first on messages, and when searching, they are displayed correctly, but surnames are searched first, eg. searching for "S" brings up "John Smith", then "Sam".
5. Option to turn off long message warnings. I've been sending long messages as multiple SMS since the olden days (3310), why start warning me about it now?
6. This may not be possible due to hardware orientation of the sensor, but how about a fullscreen camera view finder, which actually takes landscape pictures when you hold it landscape, and portrait pictures when you hold it portrait?
7. Not sure if this is correct, but I've read the jpg compression has been increased, so the overall quality of the higher res. pictures is lower than that of the 6680, to keep the size down. How about more quality options, so we can get the full benefit of the 2MP camera?

AppleScript: AirPort Alarm Clock

I have been programming with Unix shell scripts for some years but following is my very first AppleScript (modified through trial and error from public domain script). This script is used together with timer application Aurora as alarm clock to stream music from iMac in living room through Airfoil utility and AirPort Express to Bose speaker in bedroom every morning. It was edited in Script Editor and saved as application. Whenever the script is invoked, I notice old Mac OS 9 style of beach ball appear on display. Obviously it has been saved as carbon instead of native cocoa application, may I know how can I turn the AppleScript into native cocoa application ? (through Script Editor / XCode ?) I have Intel version of Mac OS 10.4.9 installed on iMac Core2Duo with all Apple updates applied as of today.
I find this script rather useful for streaming any playlist to any remote speaker through Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil utility and AirPort Express. It can be kept on desktop for convenient access as well. Note Apple AirTunes bypass any audio plugins installed in iTunes (SRS iWOW and Volume Logic in my case), hence Airfoil must be used instead. Let me know whether any improvement can be made to the script.

How can I use the "open file" alarm on an iPhone?

In the iCal program on a Mac, I can set an alarm to open a webpage at a specified time each morning automatically by using the "open file" feature in iCal and using a .webloc file for the URL. However, the event, when synced through iCloud, does not open the webpage on my iPhone. Is there a way for me to use the "open file" feature on my iPhone?
If not by using the "open file" feature, is there a way (through an app or other setting) for me to open a website or a program at a specified time each morning? Thanks!

I'm guessing that Week Cal has some sort of setting that you use to point it to your calendar, yes?
If so:
#1 make sure that Sync iCal Calendars is unchecked in iTunes.
#2 on your iPhone... Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > turn OFF Calendars for all accounts.
Now the iOS should no be looking to make contact with any data for Calendar.

Would the alarm clock works with the tablet is off / shutdown?

Hi all
Some users (including me) will turn off / shutdown their device when they are asleep to conserve device battery life.
Would the alarm clock work if the tablet is off / shutdown? I do know some smartphone alarm clock would work when the smartphone is off and when it's ringing, it would just automatically turn on the device without user manually on it.
