Alart pop-up before closing a document withouit saving, no more?

Since Lion, Pages no longer pops up the alart message when you try to close a document withouit saving; it just saves without asking. I find this quite annoying.
I save small changes that I make to a document quite frequently. If I close a document by accident, thereby saving it, then the content of the document and that of the auto back-up become almost identical. That means the back-up is utterly useless. Nor can I "undo" the changes as I lose all the edit history by closing the document.
Is there any way to bring back the old alart pop-up?

Hello Dale
This is why I wrote the set of scripts available in my iDisk (address below).

  • Can I make it so Pages "asks me" if I want to save before closing?

    Can I set Pages to ask me if I want to "save" a document before closing it?  AppleWorks always used to ask me first before closing a document I was working on.  Is there a way to get Pages to do this, too?  Thanks.

    No, Auto Save and Versions is a feature of Lion. Pages merely utilizes it. I don't care how many national primetime TV specials you've produced. I never called you stupid, but you are ignorant of Lion and OS X - OK?
    If all you can do is gripe about it then don't post. I'm trying to help you understand but you seem just to want to argue about the past being better than the present. If you cannot use Snow Leopard then learn to deal with what you have.
    I'll quit responding since you are becoming rude and argumentative. Sometimes you don't always "get your way."

    I first tried the version without the deflated stream (so everything uncompressed) against the online repair tool to check/analyse it @ https://www.pdf-tools.com/osa/repair.aspx
    And it says no error found, but the reader still want to save it when closing so i still had no clue at this point.
    Fortunately, i finally found what was wrong with my generated PDF.
    In my xref table, each object reference was not end by a full EOL, i only did put a newline char.
    Now i have "carriage return" "newline" which is the full EOL and the reader is happy and close the file silently.
    As suspected i did not follow correctly the specs on xref table
    Now i'll go and figure what i did wrong with the deflate filter
    Thanks for your help.

  • Avoid "Do you want to save changes to filename before closing?"

    Hi,
    When I open a reader enabled form and close it without doing anything it prompts "Do you want save changes to <filename> before closing?". How to get rid of this? I tried the below code in the layout ready event of a button but still no effect.
    event.target.dirty=false;
    event.target.requiresFullSave=false;
    Any solution is greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

    Hi radzmar,
    The message pops out when I click on the close button in the adobe reader. How to avoid that?
    Thanks.

  • Disable "Do you want to save changes to *.pdf before closing?" when closing a tif

    We upgraded to Office 2007 and decided to stop using the Office 2003 document imaging tool to view TIF TIFF files.  This tool wasn't included with Office 2007 so we started using Acrobat 9.1.3 Standard as our default TIF viewer.
    Here is the problem. When you close the TIF document you are prompted "Do you want to save changes to 'xxx.pdf' before closing?" Is there a way to disable this prompt?  We don't want to convert the files since they are in a read only database.

    Nope. Using WORD or Acrobat is forcing a conversion and it not an ideal way to view such files. In addition, you may want to change resolution or such of the graphic before you import it to something such as WORD. Many folks embed graphics that are 3500 dpi and millions of colors and totally bloat the file. They even crop the graphic and reduce the size, wondering why their DOC file is sooooo big. In that sense, there is an advantage to having some of the other tools available. You may have special needs and I do not want to second guess your company needs, so that is my two-cents worth. Sorry that I do not have other ideas, but using an existing graphics package would be the best for your need.

  • How to remove the warning "do you want to save changes to investigation.pdf before closing"

    Issue: To remove the warning "do you want to save changes to investigation.pdf before closing"
    I have created a XFA pdf file(using LC Designer 8.2) to display this issue
    I am not able to attached the PDF. Without attaching the pdf it would be difficult to explain.
    click event js:
    function activateUser() {
      var PDFVersion=xfa.host.variation+xfa.host.version;
      xfa.host.messageBox("button click event registered");
      xfa.form.form1.sendForm.welcomeMsg.presence = "invisible";
      xfa.form.form1.sendForm.successMsg.presence = "visible";
      event.target.dirty=false;
    docReady event js:
    function displayInfo(){
    var res =xfa.host.variation;//Added this line to display the successMsg
    //xfa.host.messageBox("docReady event registered");
    xfa.form.form1.sendForm.welcomeMsg.presence = "visible";
    xfa.form.form1.sendForm.successMsg.presence = "invisible";
    docClose event js:
    xfa.host.messageBox("docClose event registered");
    event.target.dirty=false;
    Steps to get the warning:
    1) Open the attached pdf using Acrobat Professional.
    2) Click the Confirm Enrollment" button
    3) Now close the document & the acrobat gives a warning "do you want to save changes to investigation.pdf before closing"
    Summary of the XFA pdf:
    It has two text fileds. On docReady event field A is made visisble & field B is made invisible.
    On button click event the field A is made invisisble & field B is made visible.
    On closing the pdf it should not throw this warning message.
    My Efforts:
    1) Found a property in adobe js docs.
           event.target.dirty=false;
    It doesn't solve the problem.
    2) I tried to put this logic in almost all the events listed in designer but I am not able to resolve the issue.
    Please help me resolve this issue.

    I tried putting the below 2 lines of code at the end of button click event & docClose event.
          event.target.dirty=false;
          event.target.requiresFullSave=false;
    It still gives the warning.
    Also I tried to found out the line of code which is making the pdf dirty.
      xfa.host.messageBox("is doc dirty (before displayInfo's visible-invisible work): " + event.target.dirty);
      xfa.form.form1.sendForm.welcomeMsg.presence = "visible";
      xfa.form.form1.sendForm.successMsg.presence = "invisible";
      xfa.host.messageBox("is doc dirty (after displayInfo's visible-invisible work): " + event.target.dirty);
    The doc got dirty when the successMsg field is made invisible.
    Problem I am trying to solve is:
         To display a welcome message before user action and after user action wants to display a success message.
         I follwed the visible & invisible approach & it wokred but gives me a warning on doc close.(Highly imp to avoid it)
    Is there any other approach I could follow here.

  • Prompted to save changes before closing when there's been no changes

    When opening some PDFs I am prompted with thie dialog box "Do you want to save changes to .........before closing?".
    This is not displayed for all PDFs I open, just some.
    Does anyone know if there is a way I can stop this message being displayed?
    We have version Acrobat Reader 10.1.3 running on XP SP3.
    Thanks for your help.

    I don't see the "being repaired" message, but it likely just disappears before I can see it.  Given that, Adobe Reader's behavior makes sense - the document has been repaired, so it has been changed.
    The bad files I had were downloaded a while ago from ProQuest and produced by "image2pdf.c".  It looks like they were aware of the problem, because if I download the same document now, it looks the same, but the PDF file is a different size and the problem does not occur.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Problem with Macro Running When Closing a Document

    Hi Folks;
    I'm trying to develop a Visio macro that runs when I close a document, but I've run into a snag...
    The problem is that the code below only works when I press the 'X' in the corner of the document to close it.  If I try to close it using
    File -> Close, I get the error "Run Time Error -2032464741 (86db0c9b) An exception occurred", and the debugger highlights the first 'Application' line.
    I need the code to work regardless of the close operation, and I'm not sure how to make that happen (since I assumed it should've work the same regardless).
    Private Function Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose(ByVal doc As IVDocument) As Boolean
    Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose = True
    If MsgBox("If you made changes, did you UPDATE the Diagram History? (Select Yes if no changes were made)", vbYesNo + vbCritical + vbDefaultButton2, "Warning - DIAGRAM HISTORY UPDATED?") = vbYes Then
    Application.ActiveDocument.Pages.ItemU("Diagram").Layers.Item("Warning").CellsC(4) = 1
    Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose = False
    Else
    Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose = True
    End If
    End Function
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Zang

    I'm betting your typical "try this" response is not what anyone wants.  But since you've chimed in... my problems with the Visio event model are PLENTY.  Print and save events that cannot be cancelled, document close that doesn't fire on application
    close, and Application.BeforeDocumentSaveAs that occurs WAY AFTER the document has been saved are just a few.  (Did Microsoft even test these events??)  The official Microsoft response to ALL of this was, in a word, "repurpose" it. Essentially they
    advocate completely rewriting the actual Save and Print portions of the interface and corresponding logic in Visio by intercepting keystrokes and redirecting ribbon extensibility idMso ="FileSave" and idMso ="FileSaveAs" commands to your own methods.
    To quote paid support:
    "You may repurpose Save command in Visio as suggested in my previous email, however there is a design limitation that does not allow repurposing Print backstage button.
    In order to achieve Visio Print repurpose, the workaround is to hide the print back stage altogether and plug with custom backstage ribbon xml."
    We now also repurpose idMso="FilePrintQuick", idMso="FilePrintPreview", and idMso="FileClose" customUI commands, but we still had to use the logic above to catch save before closing.
    Valid methods that work while Visio is active will fail within Application close.  IT IS A BUG IN VISIO.  That is what this post is about.

    How do I set Safari to prompt before closing multiple tabs OR reopen all of the closed tabs when when I relaunch the application?  The "Reopen all windows from last session" is unselectable.

    It would seem if your choose "Show my windows and tabs from last time" '''''and''''',
    *when you last closed Firefox, you had no web site open (just a blank tab), that it would open just that blank tab
    *when you last closed Firefox, you had one or more tabs/web site open, that would allow you to "Restore Previous Session"

    '''Restore Previous Session'''<br />
    Open tabs are automatically saved when closing Firefox beginning in Firefox 4. To open your last session, after Firefox starts, click History > Restore Previous Session. For this to work

  • How do I activate "Save As" upon closing a document

    I've created several forms that I placed on a shared network drive & intranet for people to use.  After the user fills out the form, they can then print it using the print button on the form.  When they close out of the form, a box opens and asks them if they "want to save the changes before closing - yes, no, cancel".  If they select "yes", their changes save in the current form so when the next user opens the form, it's populated with the previous users information.  What I need to happen is when the user selects "yes" to save the form, a "save as" box opens so they have to save it in another place.  Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Hi,
    I think the best solution for this problem is to reset the form before saving the form and all you need to do is add a script line which is
    xfa.host.resetData("FORMNAME");

  • How do I move a group of tabs before closing a window?

    I recently lost all my custom settings on Firefox after an aggressive tech support person "cleaned" my browser settings. When this happened, I lost the ability to move my open tabs to a new group before closing the window they were in.
    Previously, when I had multiple windows open, and I initiated an "Exit" or "Close" command on one of the open windows, 2 things happened:
    (1) First I received a warning message asking me if I wanted to close the window
    (2) Then I received a second warning message asking me if I wanted to move my tabs before closing the window.
    Now, I only receive the 1st message, and I am no longer offered the option of moving my tabs to a new window before closing the current window.
    I've tested this both with and without the Tabs Group Manager which I was using prior to the time my browser was "cleaned", and I still have not found a way to restore this missing feature.
    Unfortunately, I don't know if this feature/option is:
    -- provided as a default in Firefox
    -- a customizable feature in Firefox, or
    -- a feature in a Firefox add-on.
    Can anyone tell me where/how to restore this option to move a group of tabs before closing a window?
    Thanks,
    Metta

    Thank you, guigs2, for your feedback, and my apologies for the confusion. After rereading my question, I realize I made a couple of typos in my original help request which cannot now be corrected. Specifically, the 2nd sentence in the first paragraph should have read:
    "I lost the ability to move GROUPS of open tabs to a new WINDOW before closing the window they were in."
    This means that, as far as I can tell, neither of your plugin recommendations applies:
    -- Apparently, Tab Mix Plus only applies to manipulating tabs WITHIN the existing window and, unless I am missing something, I did not see any reference to the option I'm looking for -- specifically, an automatic prompt offering to move groups of tabs to a new window before closing the existing window.
    -- Unfortunately, the other plugin you mentioned (Tag Cloud) appears to be non-functional in the current version of Firefox, based on the most recent user reviews.
    In light of this, I will consider the possibility of resubmitting my question with the typos corrected -- and, in the meantime, if there is any additional feedback that you (or anyone else) can offer, I would be most grateful!

  • Before closing down the machine, how can I close all the open programs?

    Now that the iMac automauically starts up with the programs in use when closing, I find that this is delaying my start.
    There must be a shortcut to close all the open programs before closing the machine.
    Kindly advise.

    If by 'closing' the machine you mean shutting it down, there is a checkbox in the Shutdown confirmation window which is preset to re-start all apps at startup which were open when the machine was shut down. Uncheck that item in the Shutdown confirmation window.
    Unfortunately you'll need to do that each time you shut the machine down.

    I am getting this response when I am trying to open a file: Before viewing PDF documents in this browser you must launch Adobe Reader and accept the End User License Agreement, then Quit and relaunch the browser.”  What do I do?  I have opened this up in the past without a problem.

    Back up all data.
    If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
    From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
    The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
    If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

    Nothing to do with the download; you need to open Adobe Reader once after the install is complete, and accept the EULA.
