ALBPM - How to represent Dates (without Time)

I have been slated to clean up existing some production ALBPM code. Our business logic is all Date based, but the original implementation uses the Fuego Time object b/c there is no Date object available. This causes issues when we work across time zones or daylight savings time. For example, 2am 11/9/2009 in US/Eastern would be 11pm 11/8/2009 in US/Central so the dates would not match. Currently, the code has some ugly hacks, such as calling the "addHours" method to roll the time forward.
I would appreciate hearing any best practices on how to approach Date based logic in ALBPM. In representing Dates, should we:
1) Stick with current Fuego Time object (if so, how should we handle time zones & DST)
2) Use some standard Java object (Java Date object has time embedded as well, leaving the same challenges)
3) Create a new Date object ourselves that ignores time.
4) Other??
Any suggestions from those who have worked with mainly Date based logic would be appreciated.

We have the same problem, we just set the time to 12 noon and most probably this fix the issue when system communicates across time zones.
If teh user selects the date as "11/10/2009", make use of the SimpleDateFormat to append the time as 12 Noon.

question, however, with this statement:

For example in a database table there are two fields rundate and runtime. I want to compare these two with perticular date and time in the program. Like, I want to pull all the records where the records's date and time are less than a perticular date and time in the program.

Is there any specific reason for not having a data type which only stores date (without time part) in ORACLE - I am asking this because DATE (without time) is a very frequently used data type in any application.

Yes, many application need to have fields on the screen that just show a date, such as a date of birth as you say, but that's simply a display issue, and any application interface will allow for a date format to be specified for displaying the data from the database, so in terms of such "Date only" dates, you would simply use a format mask that ignores the time portion.
There's absolutely no issue with the fact that it's just a single datatype... it causes no problems... it's perfectly flexible at being used for just dates or for dates and times... so why such a concern?

When it asks you for a password, enter your administrative user’s password; it will not show the password as you type it.
After you enter that command, enter this command again:
date
It should show a date and time that is close enough to the actual date and time that you should be able to go into the Date & Time pane of System Preferences without it hanging.

I'm using Hyperion-Essbase-Admin-Services v11.1.1.2 and the BSO Option.
In a nightly process using MAXL i load new data into one Essbase-cube.
In this nightly update process 14 account-members are updated by running 14 rules files one after another.
These rules files connect 14 times by sql-connection to the same oracle database and the same table.
I use this procedure because i cannot load 2 or more data fields using one rules file.
It takes a long time to load up 14 accounts one after other.
Now my Question: How can I minimise this data loading time ?

Is the upper table design what GlennS mentioned as a "Data" column concept which only allows a single numeric data value ?
In this case I cant tag two or more columns as “Data fields”. I just can tag one column as “Data field”. Other data fields I have to tag as “ignore fields during data load”. Otherwise, when I validate the rules file, an Error occurs “only one field can contain the Data Field attribute”.
Or may I skip this error massage and just try to tag all 14 fields as “Data fields” and “load data” ?
Please advise.

Before assigning the QADATE value you can write the logic to display 20080312   as 12-MAR-2008 taking the offset values .
Like

lw_date    = qadate+6(2).

I have to show Date and Time with TimeZone abbreviation,
for example:
1) 31 March 2011 2:30 in india standard time - it should show in screen 31 March 2011 2:30 IST.
2) 31 March 2011 2:30 in Australia/New Zealand - Eastern time zone it should show in screen 31 March 2011 2:30 AEST.
how can i show *Australia/New Zealand - Eastern time zone to AEST*,
I tried with format DD MMM YYYY HH:MM zzz, and i looked time zone API too.

If the app needs to display many values then you MUST inform business users of the problem because there are duplicates and they, not you, need to decide specifically what happens in those cases.

How to provide date and time stamp to the extracted file.

I 'm downloading data from DB to Flat file using GUI_DOWLOAD. whenever it is executed it is creating with a file name.
if i rerun the program the file is overwriting with the same name.
now based on the requirement how many times i executed, that many times file should be individually created and should be added with date and time stamp.
like
if when i executed at the very first time it should saved with filename, date and time.
say "Address.txt 04/05/2007 07:55:10"
When i executed it for second time it doesn't overwrite the file.
it should create a new file.
like "Address.txt 04/05/2007 07:59:20".
Please guide me the way if possible code.

In this case user will enter the file name. u can append date & time to that file path.

How to know date and time information from Trace File defaultTrace.X.trc?

i'm using EP 6.0 SP9 patch 1.
As you know, default trace is written in the <SID>\JC00\j2ee\cluster\server0\log\defaultTrace.X.trc.
By using the default trace formatter, it shows like the following sample messages.

like "YYYY:MM:DD:hh:mm:ss"? i know that it can be configured from the Visual Admin --> Services --> Log Configurator but i don't know the exact place for the trace file.

I use the standalone Logviewer to read the log files. Works great.
"If you have an SAP Web Application Server Java 6.20 or below you may also get a standalone_logviewer.zip file at the SAP Service Marketplace at service.sap.com/download → SAP NetWeaver → Release 04. In this case JDK version 1.3 or higher must be installed on the system. The java version must be same on the server and the client.
In the SAP Web AS Java 6.30 installation a folder named logviewer_standalone can be found under: <path Of J2EE installation>/<SysID>/JC<nr>/j2ee/admin/logviewer_standalone. Verify that the batch file logviewer.bat is installed in the directory logviewer-standalone.
