Album art "blacked out" in coverflow

I am seeing some strange behavior from Coverflow on my new iPhone. Occasionally an albums artwork will show up as all black. Additionally, sometimes I will be able to see the cover in the cover "lineup" if i scroll a few albums over, but once i get to the cover in question, it disappears. Conversely I have seen this happen where the "lineup" cover isn't visible, but once I get to the album the artwork appears.
i always add my album art one of these two ways.
1) Include it in the ID3 tag by using Tag & Rename software.
2) Open the Info while browsing my iPhone in iTunes and attach it.
I know people have had problems with artwork by having iTunes find it or by adding it via the preview window. I am not doing that in this case. Here is my phone info.
iPhone: 3G 16gb
iPhone Software: 2.1
Sync: Manual
OS: Windows

I'm having the exact same issue with my 16gb iPhone unfortunatley I got the iPhone only a few days ago and updated to 2.1 before I put music/album art on there so I can't tell if it's happening just for 2.1 or firmware before this.
I also own an ipod touch 8gb which I am not willing to try updating album art to in case the same thing happens, but all art on there is working ok. but I do know same albums and cover art have been use for both devices.
In the few days I have been searching for an answer, no one has been able to give an answer to what's happening but I seriously don't think it's an issues with my pc/music/album art if anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.
My setup is exactly the same as spicymeat's:

  • IPhone 3G: Album covers blacking out?!?!

I put music into my phone everything is fine. After I go and look for music some of the album covers are black. Any ideas whats going on??

Its pretty lame that they had to modify the phone for keynotes...rather than making that a standard feature.
All the other video ipods outputted the album art/ipod info...
The iphone should have the option of outputting everything the iphone displays...especially since the cable is $50.
I am going to just return the cable. I have no use for it.
Thanks everyone for replying to my thread.

  • Album Art Resizing Itself In Coverflow

The majority of my album art is 600x600, but some is rectangular (e.g., 600 wide x 540 tall). This afternoon, I noticed that some, but not all, of this rectangular artwork is being resized when iTunes is in coverflow view: the height of some of the album covers that appear in coverflow are being stretched so that they appear as square rather than rectangular.
The same art is also distorted when I view art in the artwork column and in grid view.
However, the proportions of the affected artwork is correct when viewed with
    • iTunes' artwork viewer (in the lower lefthand corner)
    • on my second generation iPod nano
    • on my iPhone 3G's iPod app (in coverflow and otherwise)
    • in the Remote app
    • and, if I open one of the album covers and view it in its own window, it appears in the correct dimensions.
The artwork also looks correct in the summary tab and the artwork tab when I "Get Info." If I copy one of the affected album covers and open it with Preview, its dimensions will be correct.
I can discern no pattern as to which images are being resized. Some art images I have scanned myself and some I have downloaded.
I have no idea what might have triggered this.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is an addendum to my original post, including a cumbersome "fix," and a working hypothesis as to the root of the problem.
(In my original post, I had neglected to update my signature to note that my current OS is 10.6.4.)
Last night, I extracted the artwork of the nonstandard covers (I'll call "standard" artwork that which is 600x600, as well as other art of that 1:1 ratio).
Assuming that the width of all the nonstandard artwork was 600 pixels, the affected artwork was that which was 540 high and higher. Nonstandard artwork that still appears normally is 539 and shorter. The 600/540+ (bad) vs. 600/539- (good) appears to be a ratio that affects artwork of smaller sizes as well. For example, a file that was 467 pixels in width that was "too high" (420) would also be affected. (I have some artwork that is smaller than 600 pixels, but none is larger, so while I assume larger images will be affected, I don't know for certain.)
When I extracted a 600x540 file and resized (or rescaled) it to 600x539 and then embedded the new art, coverflow displayed the artwork correctly. I have done this for all the affected artwork and this has "fixed" the problem.
(I've read that a number of people are currently having problems adding artwork so, for the record, I copy an image open in Preview and, then, in iTunes, I "get info" for the files to which I want to add artwork and then paste the artwork into the artwork box seen in the "Multiple Item Information" window.)
However, this only fixed the problem for view in coverflow. It did not fix the grid view. Those files were still being stretched until I "jiggled" the size of album covers in grid view. I slid the sizing bar back and forth, to make the albums first larger and then smaller, and then I eased the size back to its original position (in my case, as large as the grid view will render four albums in one row before they become three to a row). So, no kidding, once I shook iTunes, grid view worked again.
Armed with this information, I sat down with a similar system (my wife's), another 13" Macbook running 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2.1, and I attempted to replicate the problem; her iTunes library is unique but contains some of the same music files with the same artwork that had appeared distorted on my system. Two careful examinations of the music library had not shown any distortion to this system's extant artwork but, when I added nonstandard artwork of the problematic ratio (and files that had said artwork) I saw the same problem on my wife's computer that I seen on mine.
I can offer the following additional information:
12 May 2010 is the last known date on which I embedded a file with "problematic" artwork that displayed said artwork properly in coverflow.
On 26 July, I extracted a nonstandard artwork image, touched it up, and embedded that "airbrushed" art into the music files. This is the album cover that I first noticed to be stretched. However, while I noticed it yesterday afternoon, I do not recall noticing it on the morning of the 26th, when the new artwork was added. (And this does not necessarily mean anything; I may have been inattentive.)
While wrangling with that album cover yeterday and trying to get it to display properly, I did not notice a problem with any other album cover (but I did not look methodically). After wrestling with that album and failing, I quit iTunes, tossed the album art cache in the trash, and rebuilt. It was at that point at which I noticed distorted artwork en masse.
I am open to other ideas, but my working hypothesis is that, at some point in time, within the last week or the past two months, iTunes (by which I mean the most current version of iTunes on a Macbook running the most current version of Snow Leopard) has become incapable of caching these nonstandard images. The extant thumbnails of the "problem covers" were fine, but once I tossed them into the trash and iTunes needed to reconstruct them, mayhem ensued.
Even though I have hit upon a workaround for our computers and will avoid adding problematic art to our iTunes libraries, I'd still be curious to know what's behind the problem and if there is an easier fix than the one I found, which is not a fix inasmuch as it's the "don't move your arm like that" when your arm hurts solution.
For what it's worth and thanks in advance,
    N.

  • Ipod displays the album art BLACK

I've got a 80GB ipod video 5th generation, and some songs of some albums appear black... but on the pc they are just fine.... what the **** is going on?
All my songs have the correct art on them... but some appear as a black box on the ipod. HEEEEEEEEEEEELP

i have the same problem for ages since itunes 7.2 and 7.3 arrived i guess, but no techy apple guy can give an explanation or fix this bug even on itunes 7.4.
when your artwork is on itunes it's fine, by copying it to your ipod will get the exact copy at first. but when you edit the artwork direct on your ipod, say maybe you changed the artwork, it will display black after disconnecting.
now before getting into trouble and taking hours of restoring your ipod, you may simply delete that file from your ipod and drag a new copy from itunes library. with this you'll see the artwork perfectly.
on a last note i also find annoying that you can no longer customize what fields you can view (rating, last played, date added, etc.) on your ipod settings when you plug it into itunes. the settings are at default everytime you connect your ipod.
i hope this helps. seems apple is not listening to our little concerns which we all find annoying.

  • Glitchy Album Art-Maybe Only in Coverflow?

When I updated iTunes to 7.3.2 I started having problems with album art.
My 3 Death Cab cds have 7 spots in coverflow (223) and I don't know why. In my iPod it comes up as one album or one artist, and I shift-clicked the different albums to insure that the information was the same on all the songs (short of the title, of course). However, this is the only band that I've had this problem with.
I don't know what else I can do at this point, any suggestions?

  • More starnge album art on my 16g

for some reason my album art for music has been replaced by random podcast album art?
however in coverflow mode all of my music album art is correct, but as soon as I turn my ipod touch upright/portrait the album art changes to podcast art?
if I turn the ipod landscape then the music art returns?
    very strange

I've experienced something similar. Coverflow seems to get its artwork from that embedded in the first track of an album. So if you have other or no artwork in subsequent tracks, when you're listening to those tracks you'll see the other artwork or the black screen with the musical note icon on it.
(This info is for Windows - not sure how you do the equivalent of a right-click on your Mac, sorry!)
The easiest remedy is to play track one of the affected album, then drag the cover art from the bottom left onto your desktop. Now select all tracks on the album, right click and select 'Get Info' and then drag the cover art off the desktop into the 'Artwork' box on the right hand side.
Then resync your Ipod Touch and all should be well.

  • Album art fails to show after 1st track

    ipod classic 80G fw 1.0.3
The album art shows properly in CoverFlow
When I start playing from coverflow, it shows the proper album art in the first song I play, but if I go the next song, it shows the "music notes" placeholder like there is no art in the file.
Now for the kicker: if I press the center click from coverflow to show the track list, then start playing the album on track #2, then it shows the artwork, but if I move on to the next track, it fails to show the artwork again.
Basically it acts like it can't find artwork when moving from one song to the next.
All my tracks have album art embedded into them (I checked with Mp3Tag. Art size varies from about 100x100 all the way to 500x500

I figured it out. Thanks to going click happy on the interface. Click on Advanced, then Get Album Artwork". It will then tell you to login and a warning that the song info will get sent to Apple. I've been trying to move my songs over to this thing on and off for months. I really think Android is the way to go as forcing you to convert your songs to a format that takes your rights to play a song away is rediculous. No ringtone using my own songs... seriously? My ancient Blackberry had that option with no special software necessary, you just put your music in a folder and let there be sound! I'm not upgrading to the new iPhone.

  • Ios6 and album art

When I downloaded the ios 6, only some of my album art is present. I tried to sync with itunes but still no luck, missing lots of album art. Weird enough, when I do horizontal view, its all there...vertical view, only about half of it

OK so I have been able to come up with a solution that worked for me, for the most part. Here it is:
    1) Find an album in my iPod Touch with missing art in coverflow
    2) Download the missing art from the internet, unless I already have it
    3) Open iTunes and find the album in my music library
    4) Highlight every track in the album
    5) Right click>get info
    6) Double click the box named "Artwork" on bottom right
    7) Finder will open. Locate the art I downloaded and select "open". Click ok.
    8) Sync iPod.
The album art now appears in coverflow mode again and stays there.
**Here is the problem: For songs missing artwork that are individual and not part of an album, when I click "get info", the "artwork" box doesnt show up, and I cant use the method described above.
Here is what I did for those:
    1) Download the art for the track with art that doesnt show up in coverflow
    2) Locate the track with missing art in iTunes library
    3) Right Click>get info
    4) Click the "artwork" tab
    5) Delete the art thats there
    6) Add the art I just downloaded
    7) Sync
After that they were all there in my coverflow except for 2 songs that are individual. I can't seem to fix them no matter what. All my art has been restored and viewable in coverflow now except for 2 songs. I can live with that for now.
I have 495 albums and a total of 2,835 songs so it wasnt too bad for me since my library isnt that massive. Only about 19GB

  • A weird tale of Album Art

    Hi all,
I don't really expect an answer to this, but I think it's an interesting story (and, yes, I've also posted this in the iTunes Discussion).
I've manually updated all the album art for my approximately 400-500 albums in iTunes. Everything was fine for a while. I then noticed that R.E.M.'s "Out of Time" wasn't displaying the album art (just that large grey musical note) when songs were playing on my iPod Touch 4th Generation, even though the album art correctly displays on iTunes on my MacBook Pro. Of course, I tried shutting the iPod off, etc.
So I manually inserted the album art again (even though, very interestingly, the first five times I tried to download a copy of the album cover, it would show up blank in "downloads"). Weird!
This morning, as I was driving to work (I usually just "shuffle" all my songs) a Loretta Lynn song ("Little Red Shoes" -- a weird song) from her album "Van Lear Rose" showed the album art from "Out of Time"!! Ack! It's possessed!!

Where exactly is the artwork stored?
Stored in the Artwork folder in the iTunes folder.
If it’s art you added to the songs themselves, it is part of the files.
If I decide to migrate this music to a new machine, how do i go about insuring all the various artwork goes with it?
Just copy the entire iTunes folder over. On the new computer, start iTunes holding the Option key and selec5t Choose existing library and choose the iTunes library file in the folder you moved over.
How come when I am listening to the music stored on my PowerMac through my laptop (Sharing the music) some of the artwork displays and some does not?
I don’t believe (not sure though) iTunes will get artwork for shared music. It will display for artwork embedded in the file itself.

  • Album Art Incorrectly Displayed

I have a 4GB iPod nano which has always worked fine. Just recently though, when some songs were added, the album art went out of sync. It is correct in iTunes, but when displayed on the iPod, all of the songs that should have album art do, and the ones that shouldn't do not, but the album art is rarely the correct image. The images are just all mixed and mangled between the songs, seemingly randomly. I've noticed that a certain song does keep the same image, it is just the wrong one. I've tried reloading all of the songs. Any ideas how to fix this?

Did ya try a restore? Go to the software update program (it's in your utilitys folder in applications for a Mac, and it's in the start menu somewhere for Windows), plug in the nano, and click restore. CAUTION! This will erase EVERYTHING on your nano, then restore the software back onto the nano.

For individual albums not showing artwork on the iPod, I usually do the following:
My iTunes is set up to sync only checked items to my iPod. So I plug in the iPod, I select the album in iTunes and uncheck the whole album. I sync the iPod and that album is removed from the iPod completely. I then recheck all the tracks from that album and then resync the iPod forcing the album to be reuploaded onto the iPod. This normally fixes the issue.
This is a good way to do it for those onesy-twosey albums rather than turning the artwork off/on for the whole library.

  • CoverFlow album art has a black line through it?

Anyone else have this problem? There's a thin black line running from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of all my album art. What's the deal? Can you somehow disable this?

    Good tip,
Essentially the cover art uses the same items as playing video.

  • Album Art via Video out

It is my understanding that only video will play via the video out, no album art. I have 150 music videos and 2500 mp3 all with cover art. I put my Iphone in the av dock which is connected to my AV receiver and hit shuffle. Music Videos will appear on the TV but not the album art although the music plays. The album art appears on the phone - but not via the video out. If this intentional, why? Major shortcoming. Any workarounds? It would be cool.

Can't be done at the present. However, you can do a video slide show of your pics with music.

    Hi gdogk,
If there was an interruption during the initial iTunes Match process and you are now having issues with playback and album art, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful. In particular, you may want to turning iTunes Match off, then back on again, as noted here:
If iTunes Match is already enabled on your computer or device, try turning iTunes Match off and then on again.
Mac: While holding down the option key, choose Store > Turn Off iTunes Match.
Turn iTunes Match on by selecting Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
Windows: While holding down the shift key, choose Store > Turn Off iTunes Match.
Turn iTunes Match on by selecting Store > Turn On iTunes Match.

  • Black Album Art Appearing

I've got an Ipod Classic 80gb. I've went through great lengths to put album art with each song but for some songs even though the art shows up fine in iTunes it only displays as a black square on my iPod. Does anyone know why it's doing this and how to fix it?
    TIA
    Rose

Likely a corruption in the artwork database. If you uncheck the box to display artwork on the iPod, sync, reselect it, and resync all of your artwork should appear on the iPod. I've had individual pieces of album artwork show up as a black square, but never the entire library.
If you just have a few albums (or tracks) with black artwork, you can try removing the artwork in iTunes for just those tracks, sync, add the artwork back, and resync.
