Album art corrupting my files!

When I add album art to a file, it becomes permanently corrupted.  I've looked at the waveforms in Audacity and it turns out the song files themselves are altered and randomly start over after 10 seconds or so of playback.  I think this is resulting from adding album art, but some of the files to which I already added art aren't replaceable
This is the only discussion I could find anywhere that describes my exact issue:
http://ask.metafilter.com/140570/iTunes-is-ruining-my-music
Anyone else having this problem?  I could really use some help.  Thanks so much in advance!

I have also had this problem a few times. I have also looked at the audio data with WavePad and it is corrupted. The discussions at metafilter have ridiculous suggestions for fixes: alternate download/ripping settings, getting a new sound card, etc. The only solution that seems to work is to throw away the files and re-import. That is until Apple recognizes that there's an issue and fixes the iTunes software. But the software seems to be getting worse: I notice in the new version 10 that it has a problem with modifying the artwork while a song is playing and with displaying the artwork -- you have to deselect the song file and then reselect to see the change.

    Hi John,
A major drawback with using wav for storage is that it doesn't carry a tag. This means that in the event of a corrupted library the only information remaining is the filename. Other data may be stored in the path but iTunes doesn't know how to get it. I understand that you need this format for your workflow with Diamond Cut, but that makes it all the more important that you backup your iTunes database on a regular basis.
Provided that you still have the tracks in their artist and album folders and haven't let iTunes "reorganise" them you should be able to restore some useful metadata using my script TagFromFilename. The script reads the path and filename, and provided these are in the normal layout of <Path>\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext> can restore Artist, Album Artist, Track Name and Track Number. If your files have a different but predicatable layout with the same information, e.g. the data is all in the filename, then I could create a suitable version of the script to get the data into iTunes. I recommend you disable both the Keep... and Copy... options in iTunes advanced preferences before adding files to the iTunes database. Ideally you also want a complete backup of your correctly structured folders in case you need to pull copies back from it.
As stated earlier, uninstalling iTunes before the upgrade wouldn't have helped. The crucial thing before any upgrade is to backup all user data from the drive that will be wiped. Typically the iTunes database lives in C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes on Vista or Windows 7. The crucial file is called iTunes Library.itl. You seem fairly certain that you don't have a backup database that you could restore but an exhaustive search of your hard drive for files of the form *.itl might still be worth doing. If you find any apart from the active library we can discuss how you open them to see if they are useful.

  • Album art stored in files

    Hey all,
I believe that when you have songs with no album art and then use the iTunes store to add it via "Get album artwork" it will store the file in an iTunes datebase file and point to it via a reference in the iTunes database files. However this means that if I move the file to another device or pc, the art doesnt' come with.
So is there a way for me to find out which songs have the art added via download and which ones were stored in the songs data so I can re-add it to keep the artwork with the song?

You'd have to use some other program than itunes to look at each file's ID3 tag.
As far as I know, there's no automated way to do it.
There are scripts that can make lists of itunes entries with no artwork.
    http://ottodestruct.com/blog/2005/10/20/itunes-javascripts/
I suppose you could fiddle around with such a script: tell itunes not to download artwork, close itunes, delete the itunes artwork files, reopen itunes and run the script.
itunes stores artwork in this folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\ username \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Album Artwork

  • Extracting album art images to file

I have posted a few times on how to update ID3 tags, including art work. Now I have a question that is quite the opposite.
Is there a way to extract album art images from iTunes or ID3 tags to save to a separate file? I know I can do it one image at a time using the Copy from "selected item" image, but is there a way I can do the entire library easier? 1080 albums covers would take too long.

    Hi there,
A script is just a program that's still in a semi-readable format. To use it you should first download it to your computer. When the time comes to execute the script just double-click on it like you would any other program.
The discussion went off at a possible tangent after your initial post so it might be useful if we're clear about exactly what it is you want to achieve. Robert's original script requires that you select a number of tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script. When it runs it will save artwork with the same name as the track in the folder of each selected track. If you select multiple tracks from the same album then multiple images are produced. My modifed version saves the images as Folder.jpg and won't overwrite anything already there, i.e. at most one image produced per album. There was a minor error checking problem with the Robert's script which currently expects to run on iTunes 7.x but I'm guessing you'll be on 9.x by now. If you'd prefer his output format I can post an amended version. If neither script covers your needs explain exactly what it is you wish to achieve, e.g. if you want artwork for each album put into a single folder in the form *<Artist> - <Album>.<ext>* that would be quite easy to achieve.

  • Album Art Corrupting My MP3's

this problem started recently, whenever i try to add album art to an mp3 the song will pause as usual when adding to a song that is playing and then when it resumes the album art is not there. The duration information changes and if you restart the song there is usually a skip after a few second when the song starts over and the mp3 is perminently ruined. This happens even if the song is not playing at the time. NO idea what could be the problem i uninstalled itunes and deleted all string in the registry having to do with it and reinstalled 6.0.4.2 and this problem still occurs. i would really appreciate some help!

I'm going to assume that you probably just got an Xbox 360 and set it up to communicate with your computer, right? The problem has something to do with Windows Media Connect locking the ID3 tags of MP3s.
The easiest way around this is to go to Control Panels, Windows Media Connect and go to the Sharing option. There should be a list of folders there including the one that holds your music collection. Highlight that folder and press "Remove". That keeps Media Connect from messing with that folder. You should be able to add album art just fine now. (If you need to share that folder with the Xbox 360, just add the folder back to the list after you add the art)
Unfortunately, there's nothing that can be done for your old files except re-ripping them from your CDs.
    Hope this helps!

  • I have converted most of my windows media files to itunes. However I had to close it down about 3 quarters of the way through. It then processed the album art. How can I convert the files that it didn't finish doing the first time? thanks

    Hi there,
hope you can help me. I helped my sister convert her window media files to itunes and set up an account for her. Unfortunately her computer is really slow and it was really late and we had to turn it off. It processed some of the album art for the files that it had converted. However, some songs were not converted and because there was quite a few left, I don't really know which ones did not get converted as I selected  all of the folders. How do I find out which ones I have left to convert and put the rest of the songs onto itunes for her please? Or are they on the itunes still as they showed up initially on itunes in the list to be converted.
    Thank you!

You could convert them all again and then dedupe, or use a Windows search to reveal all the WMA files and then try to work out which still need to be converted. If you're lucky iTunes would have processed the imports in alphabetical path order so it would just be a matter of working out where it had got up to...

  • Wave Files and Album Art

Can you add album art to .wav files?

Can you add album art to .wav files?
From the point of view of iTunes the answer is no, you cannot add Album Art to WAV files.
In terms of adding meta tags to WAV files, one or two programs use RIFF chunks to store meta tags in WAV files, this is actually how Apple do it for AIFF files. However iTunes does not support this for WAV files, and Windows Media Player does not support reading the tags in AIFF files.
If you are looking for a lossless music format that can be shared between iTunes and Windows Media Player then I have been there, got the T-Shirt, etc.
A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away... before I ripped all my CDs to iTunes, I considered what format to use that would be lossless and shareable amongst everything I was interested in.
That is, what is the one true lossless format (to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them...).
Initially I thought WAV, as it could be played by iTunes, iPod, and of course Windows Media Player, but I instantly discovered iTunes could not add artwork to WAV files. I then checked and confirmed Windows Media Player can as standard play AIFF files. However while it can play them, because it cannot read the meta tags in AIFF files, it will not let you add them to the Window Media Player library. At that time, I did not seriously think it would be possible to use Apple Lossless files in Windows Media Player, but I checked and I was right, it was not possible and it was believed at that time that it would never be possible since Apple Lossless is a proprietary format.
I did initially settle on using AAC instead (a lossey format) which can be played and used (with additional software) with Windows Media Player.
However I never give up and continued on my quest for the holy grail of one lossless format to rule them all.
FLAC and OGG can sort of be used in iTunes for Mac, but not on iPod, so they were ruled out. WMA lossless was instantly ruled out because while it might be possible to import in to iTunes (for Windows), it cannot be used in iTunes (meaning you would have two copies of each track), and it also cannot be used on the iPod.
I then used some lateral thinking, while there is no Apple Lossless solution for Windows Media Player, is there a solution that runs on Windows and maybe could be adapted to use with Windows Media Player? I found solutions for use with Foobar 2000, WinAmp, and dbPowerAmp, but none of these would work with Windows Media Player. I then found mention of the BASS software library (for programmers to use to write music programs) which is available for both Mac and Windows. See http://www.un4seen.com/ I also found that a module had been written for use with BASS to play Apple Lossless. However BASS by itself still would not work as a directshow filter for use with Windows Media Player. I then found mention of someone taking BASS, and an MP3 module, and packaging it as a directshow filter for use with WMP. Ah, hah! I thought, all we need is to do the same thing but with the Apple Lossless module. I was able to get in-touch with the programmer who had done that and persuade him to do the same thing with the Apple Lossless module which was written by MaresWEB and now available as open-source code here http://www.maresweb.de/projects/bass/alac.php
Jackpot, I can now play Apple Lossless in iTunes, iPod, Roku Soundbridge, Sonos ZonePlayer, SlimDevices Squeezebox, Apple TV, iPhone, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Media Center 2005, etc. etc. etc.
The one true lossless format is therefore the one you would least expect, it is Apple Lossless!
The Apple Lossless directshow filter which Milenko Mitrovic packaged together is available from his website http://www.dsp-worx.de see the January 8th 2007 entry.
You will also need a plugin for Windows Media Player to let it read MPEG4 meta tags, this plugin would also be used for AAC files as they use the same MPEG4 file format and tags. There are two available (both free) either this one http://wmptagext.sourceforge.net/ or this one http://www.softpointer.com/WMPTagSupport.htm
iTunes can of course add album artwork to Apple Lossless tracks (including as embedded art), it is possible (with various steps) to add Apple Lossless tracks to Windows Media Player, and have it play them and manage them in its library, and it is possible to use folder.jpg files with Windows Media Player for its copies of the artwork.

  • How can the album-art, which is all in iTunes , suddenly only shows partially on the iPod classic 160 gb?

I'm user of iTunes for years and in possession of 2 iPod classics.
For both iPods I have a specific playlist created, which I sync with iTunes. Each of my nearly 50,000 tracks in iTunes comes with the right Album-art (all 500 x 500 pixels and 72 dpi) andeach track contains also the necessary meta data and is converted to 160 or 192 kbps  M4a. In Finder on my MacBook I can see that the M4a files all contain album-art, because the file icons show the album art for each file name! Also in the grid overview of iTunes you can see them all, no exception.
For years that went well. Now,  a week ago, I made a new playlist (16,000 tracks) for one of my iPod classics because I wanted a different content! The old playlist I discarded and synchronized the new one.  Now it appears that a large number of album-art on the iPod is not shown, nor in cover-flow nor during play-back. I then tried to get my new playlist updated by exported as XML and then imported into iTunes again. In that case all tracks from the list are checked for completeness against the library and after import it should be fine. Unfortunately, it is not the case. Still the album-art is not shown for all tracks/albums on the iPod.
I run iTunes (11.2.2 (3)) on a MacBook Pro at the end of 2009, with the latest OSX version (10.9.3) and with enough disk space and memory.
My iTunes library is on a NAS (Synodisk DS209J II plus) the iPods run on the latest sw version (1.1.2) and are both Apple formatted.
I wonder if this is an iPod error or something wrong with the library. I hope you will understand, that I do not want to lose all the metadata of the 50,000 tracks by rebuilding the library, especially things like: date added, number of times played, rating, comments!
I hope someone can provide me an acceptable solution.
    With regards, Sign-X

I'm a bit confused, but I assume you want to shuffle your playlist while you are playing it in iTunes. If this is so, you will actually have to start playing a song before the shuffle button appears, and it appears in the top center panel of your iTunes window. Yeah, I know...

  • I Can't See any album art on my ipod Please help

For some rerason all of my album artwork won't show up on my ipod anymore. The only way to make it show up is to put the album art on in the library before putting it on my ipod but I have over 1700 songs and it is not worth deleting them to do that. I tried clicking the box to show album art so that it won't show covers and then reapplying it but that won't work. I used to be able to put album art even on files that were already on my ipod. Is that still possible?

there is a work around. i had the same problem

  • Creative ZEN Style M300/100: album art & clip?

    Hello,
All the info about ZS M sound very interesting, but there are 2 questions:
    - if there is album art in the file, will be displayed on screen while playing?
    - is it a way to use this player with clip?
    All best,

    Hi,
Most music (classical) is from ripped CD's, some albums from eMusic. If needed I use Mp3tag.
The problem is that the pics seem to show up or not at random. It's not a big deal really, just odd.
I don't have this problem with my Zen X-Fi 2. Only problem there is pics for .flac files.

  • Album art not shown in finder

Embedded album art in audio files is not shown in finder since I upgraded to ML (worked fine in SL).
Other peaple report a solution of the problem with elimination of Voice Memos. But in my case this is not evident because I do not have Voice Memos.
Does somebody know the solution of the problem?

After hours struggling with this issue I finally found a solution (my setup is iTunes 10.7, OSX 10.8.3):
(But my workaround is only for people who know how to handle iTunes libraries!!! And backup first!!)
Open a new user account on your mac.
Generate a new iTunes library called 'itunes', no other name!
Import some files with embedded album art.
Drag such a file back to desktop and you should see the icon of album art.
Everything is like it should be.
Now copy this new itunes library to your user account of origin.
But first rename your old iTunes library different from 'itunes' e.g. 'itunesorigin'
Open the new iTunes and drag one file to desktop, now miraculosly all audiofiles in all of your itunes libraries should show up album art IN FINDER including preview and quicklook.
But this state is not stable. As soon as you open the old 'itunesorigin' the problem starts up again.
    So, the next steps are:
Open the new iTunes and in preferences select the media folder of 'itunesorigin'. OK, say no to 'collate data'. Close iTunes.
Now copy and replace from 'itunesorigin' to the new iTunes the following files:
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Library.xml
Open the new iTunes and it should look like the old 'iTunesorigin' with all your playlists etc..
    Close again.
Move the media folder from 'iTunesorigin to the new iTunes folder (replace).
Open new iTunes and select in preferences the new location of the media folder.
Now you should have the file iTunes Music Library.xml instead of iTunes Library.xml.
(iTunes Music Library.xml is the default if you have multiple libraries)
Done! For me its stable and I am happy. Your iTunes folder should look like this picture:

  • Messed up Album Art

The album art for my Queen greatest hits 1, II, and III were the way they were supposed to be origionally, but I transeferred my files onto another computer and now when I try to get the album art from the files of mine that I've imported Itunes retrieves the wrong art. This is puzzling because I can see in the store that they have the appropriate and origional artwork that I had. for greatest hits one I get Queen Ekanem greatest hits and for greatest hits two I get the artwork for #3, which is as it should be.

Can you please describe in a little more detail?
Did you restore to factory settings on the iPhone? (settings-general-restore-restore all settings)? Then syncing again?
I see some suggest to disable music syncing (removing all music) the reenable music syncing. That will take long time!
I also see some suggest first disable "show album artwork on iPhone", syncing, reenable "show album artwork" and then syncing again.

  • Where is album art stored?

    Hi all --
Does itunes look in a specific place for album art? Basically my question is this: I want to transfer my album art from one computer to another. I see that the art is located in my documents\my pictures\itunes album art ... But will those upload automatically?
    -Eric

Do you mean the actual mp3 & wavs
    MP3's, yes. WAVs, no.
WAVs don't support any type of tagging well, so iTunes won't let you add album art to WAV files.
But yes, in the actual music files themselves. Not in a separate file, not in a lookup table, album art is stored in the MP3 file (or M4A file for AAC/ALAC format music).

  • Album Art Upload

I recently copied my .mp3 files to my Palm Pre via the USB connection and everything's working great!  The only problem is that I can't figure out how to organize it to show the Album art for the files.  Are there any instructions for uploading Album art and if so where do I store it?

Cover art won't show if you add it directly to the file on the iPod, you have to add it to iTunes and update.

  • Removing album art from MP3s on the Z

I've been reading around on the forums and haven't found a definiti've for my problem.
The problem that I have is when I transfer MP3s to my Zen Vision:M, these MP3s somehow get edited with album art. The original files show no evidence of album art, as I have tried numerous programs to try to find it and delete it. Windows Media Player 0, MusicMatch, iTunes, and a few other programs show that these files do not contain album art, yet when I transfer these files to my ZVM they somehow get embedded with album art.
I tried using the Media Explorer to delete the album art once the files are transferred to the ZVM, but you can't edit it. I set Media Explorer to show the album art, but you can't right click or do anything on the album art that is shown.
Does anyone have any solutions to this? Somehow the album art isn't placed onto the file until I transfer onto the ZVM. And it only adds album art to files which have have no album information in its tag or has album art.

You can use Zortam MP3 Media Studio 6.0 to remove album art that is in the ID3 tag. It cost around $25, but it seems to be a good program.
    http://www.zortam.com
Why would you want to get rid of the album art?
