Album Art Isues (Part 2)

I checked out the thread, "Album Art Issues", but that didn't work. (I get an error message saying, "The iPod cannot be synced. An unknown error has occurred (-50).")
My issue is this: I have artwork for all my albums on iTunes, but cannot import them onto my iPod unless I drag the art for each song. With 2,000 songs, this will take a while.
So how do I get art from iTunes onto my iPod?

Are you manually updating your ipod or do you use one of the auto sync options? Sounds like you are using manual updating. If so, then manual is exactly what it says, all manual, so you would have to manually add the artwork as well. If you switch to one of the auto sync options, then artwork would be synced for you to the iPod.
Good luck,
Patrick

  • Album art won't transfer when dragging music to device

Hope I'm not the only one to have noticed this.
I recently updated iTunes to v10.6 from 10.0. Since then, any album art that I have manually added in the past no longer shows up on my iPhone or iPod Classic. However, album art that was retrieved via iTunes (purchases, etc) does appear. I first noticed this on my iPhone, which was running iOS 5.0.1 at the time. I updated to iOS 5.1 afterwards, thinking that it might solve the problem but nothing changed.
Some things I should mention; my entire library is ALAC (lossless), and I do not use the sync feature with music. I manually drag albums over that I want and use the "convert to AAC feature", and have always done so. The main reason I upgraded to iTunes 10.6 was to take advantage of converting to AAC 256kbps instead of the previously fixed bit rate of 128kbps. Anyway, I dragged over a lossless album without the option of converting to AAC, but it still didn't transfer the artwork.
In case anyone is wondering, the method I used to download my art was by finding the cover using Google Images, hilighting every track in the album, and pasting it in. Again, I never had this problem until upgrading iTunes to v10.6.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone else has experience this problem, and if there are any fixes yet.

In my experience, the only way for the album artwork to stay associated with the actual music file, is to use the "Update album artwork" feature in iTunes. This means, that to get the artwork from iTunes, the artist name, song title and album name MUST match exactly the information of the song in the iTunes store. If the art is not available, you can add your own. If you add your own, then run the update album art feature again so that the album art becomes part of the songs meta data. It should transfer to just about any device after that. However, some devices (Nokia comes to mind) will not display art metadata over 64K in size.

  • Album art won't update when albums removed

    Hi,
I have noticed a bug on my new iPad. If I have multiple albums by the one artist on my iPad, it displays the album art of one of the albums in the thumbnail view.
However if I then remove the album from my iPad that relates to the album art being shown, the thumbnail views still stays as that artwork rather than changing to one of the other albums still on my iPad.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • Compilation artwork instead of original album art

I've found the "Get Artwork" feature on the new iTunes (7) to be pathetic. I say this because while I was trying to get artwork for a song (in this case a song from a Kylie Minogue album titled "Kylie") instead of giving me the album from 1988 it gave me artwork for a compliation cd titled somewhere along the lines of "Kylie Minogue Greatest Hits". I've spent hours perfecting my 4,000 song library to the point that every detail of every song (year, track #, artist, etc.) is 100% accurate. The most important part of these songs for me is the album artwork. And I take extreme pride in having the original album art, not just a stupid compilation made just a few years back but the artwork like it was on the original when the music first came out. this is very significant in the case of original albums that are no longer in production. long story short i'm ****** that the "Get Artwork" feature is corrupting my files with incorrect artwork. there should be a feature that let's you decide if you find acceptable compilation artwork in place of the original if apple can't find it. i'd rather have no artwork then a wrong artwork or compilation artwork. Has anyone else had this type of problem before? please respond if so, it would be nice to know i'm not the only one.

Thanks Léonie. That's definitely an improvement over 2 pictures. I normally prefer the "white mosaic" option, as it uses less ink. I've never had this issue on older versions of iTunes. Any idea why it's printing two pictures and how I could delete one of them in order to utilize the "white mosaic" option? This is what it looks like, straight from iTunes when I hit print. I learned the hard way that if I  go in and delete the artwork from every indiviudual song and then hit print, I only get 1 image. But that seems very time consuming and illogical. And thanks again.

  • Album Art - some albums will not allow art to be added manually - help?

I've searched the archive for an answer to this, but haven't found a solution.
I'm importing many of my CD's into iTunes, some of which I have to add the album art manually. For the most part this works just fine, as I go to "Info," and drag the art into the art window.
But here's the problem - there are some albums that just WILL NOT display the art. I drag the art to the window, and it appears there, but does not "stick." When you play another song, then go back to the previous, the artwork is gone again.
I've tried adding the art in every way I know how: drag to the window that says "drag artwork here" in the main window; going to "get info" then "artwork" and dragging the art into that window; and also clicking the "add" button and navigating to the stored art file...the result is always the same - the art doesn't stick. This is only for some albums; the majority work just fine.
I've cleared the album art cache, with no change, and have also set the ID3 tag to "none" for the problematic albums (based on a suggestion in another posting). Both of these had no effect on the results - the art still won't stick.
    I'm at wit's end - anyone have a suggestion??

Manual syncing seems a very inefficient method to use - it my experience its much easier to associate one or more playlists with your iDevice and then automatically sync to that.  Doing it this way allows you to set up what you want to sync without the iDevice being connected, and also allows you to manage what gets synced completely, since you can remove albums from the playlist so that they're automatically deleted from your iDevice next time you sync.

  • How can I get album art to be shown in the left corner when it's already shown in the main area of iTunes?

My entire music collection was recently deleted on accident. It was my fault (and partially my external harddrive's ridiculously touchy USB cord's fault), but anyways I was able to use an undelete software to get the files back. Some are gone, some are somehow warped into each other, e.g., a folk song, audio-wise, is now replaced with half of a death metal song. I'm trying to fix all that up right now, but my problem is that I can only see album art in the main part of iTunes, right next to the song titles displayed. iTunes refuses to display the art in the bottom left-hand corner, where I think it usually shows what the cursor is locked on at a given time. I'm sorry for not elaborating a sentence or two back, I've also lost about half of my album art in iTunes, so that's why I'm adding it back.
The weird thing is, album art that was retained after the deletion fiasco does show up in both areas. It's just album art that I add right now that doesn't work. And it can't just be because the files are corrupted or something, because they are editable and play fine, and the same thing happened with a file I just redownloaded and then imported. That file should be perfectly OK.
Can anyone tell me if there's a reason for album art to not display in the bottom left-hand corner of iTunes while I have certain files selected?
    Thanks
p.s. one more thing, it's not like the Currently Selected box in that corner is hidden, it's in plain view which is why the blank space is so bothersome.

I am having a similar problem - my iPod Touch (2nd gen., 32GB, iOS 4.1) was recognized by iTunes on my 24" iMac (Intel, Late 2006) after I had updated it about 1-2 weeks ago (Software Update) to 10.2.2 (the iMac has OS X 10.5.8 on it). I had to take my iMac to a local WiFi spot to do the updating, because I don't have Internet at home currently (can't find anyone who provides just affordable DSL if you don't have your landline via AT&T).
Today I went to sync my iPod Touch with the iMac (I had updated some apps and bought one new one using the iPT through local WiFi spot). However, iTunes did not see ANY devices at all(!). I tried connecting the iPod Touch first, restarting iTunes and then re-connecting the iPT - nothing helps. The iPod screen turns on just like when charging, but no sign of syncing.
I'm wondering how applicable the article that you listed would be, or is there a comparable article for iPod Touches with 10.5.8? (I'm getting very fed up with what seems to be the standard Apple partyline of "Just buy a new iPod/Mac/get new software....blah, blah, blah" -Apple, what about those of us who consider it wasteful and unnecessary to buy new hardware or software every few years, just to get a helpful and NON-condescending reply from your support people? • How to properly embed album art work into TV/Films itunes: home sharing lag

My setup is a simple apple home sharing network.
I have a mac mini running OS X 10.6.8 and itunes 11.0.4(4) it hosts a lot of music, DVD's that have been re-encoded and paid for content from itunes.
The mac mini is conntected to the network over a very good gigbit lan and has 4 apple TV3 (latest gen) hanging off the network, and multiple PC/Mac/ipod/ipad devices hanging off the network.
I connect to the itunes home sharing service with the apple TV service using the "remote" application on the ipad.
When I select Music/Albums TV Shows or Films from the menu of the itunes library the album art work loads (quickly) over the grey boxes as I scroll down. However this takes a few seconds for each "scroll" I do on the ipad (it has thousands of items in there).
The exception to the rule is any paid content, when I open Music/TV/Films menu on the ipad the paid content (especially for TV and Films) the artwork is already there, and doesn't have to load it.
How is the artwork for paid content contained differently than the artwork for content I've manually put into the itunes library.
If I look at the itunes library locally on the machine hosting the itunes data, the artwork is there straightaway, no loading, pull up the items info with "get info" and click on art work, the artwork is there, and I can see no different in the art work settings for paid content or for content I've manually updated/loaded an image for.
So why/how does the paid for content have artwork on the ipad the exact second I open it over the network, yet the non-paid for content take a few seconds per screen to load it.
Is there something different in how the art work is embeeded, or is it a caching setting ? whats the difference.

    Dang You Autocorrect.
You don't saw what size and resolution the embedded artwork is. This could be part of the issue. Artwork on movies you purchase from the iTunes Store is 667x1000 at 72 DPI so if yours is larger than this is could be causing the delay.

  • Syncing Issues: album art, cut-off songs

I have a 16GB iPod Touch that I've been syncing with my Windows Vista PC, seemingly without complications. It has only recently come to my attention that somewhere between my computer's library and my library on my iPod, something is messing up at random times. Full songs will become half-songs, 30-second songs, on the iPod. They are not damaged on my PC, but when they get uploaded to the iPod, they get messed up. If I re-upload them, sometimes the problem goes away, sometimes it cuts in a different spot. This is immensely frustrating, as I do not know how to fix it or what is causing it to begin with.
More recently I have discovered that all the work I have done organizing my library and getting everything to have album covers is wasted when I try to put these albums on my Touch. The album covers entirely disappear, and I have to copy and paste them in, which takes about five minutes per album (slow write speed?). Seems pretty lame to have a product focused on the ability to flip through albums visually, and then have the album art not automatically download with my music.
    Any help?

I finally have the fix for this issue after a month of extensive debugging, experimentation, etc. on Windows Vista. I've reinstalled my whole **** computer twice, and Apple's phone support is a (bad) joke. They should just send me the script they use so I can read it myself.
First off, let's establish the symptoms of this problem:
    * Data sync'ed to my iPod Touch would corrupt at random points. Sometimes songs would go through intact. Other times they would "glitch" partway through and the device would advance to the next song. Video files of a sufficient size -- like movies and T.V. episodes -- ALWAYS glitch at some point, which crashes the video playback and brings the device back to the video menu.
    * Periodically, the iPod Touch would corrupt completely, which required a total firmware restoration. Rarely, these firmware restorations would also fail.
Now for the solution. It's a two-part deal:
    1) Stop "Windows Search." It's not the major cause of sync problems, but it is a contributor, which is unsurprising given the amount of resources it hogs. Open the "Services" control panel item (Control Panel->System and Maintenance->Administrative Tools->Services, or just type "services.msc" into the "search" box on the Start Menu) and double-click "Windows Search." Click "stop" and set the startup type to "disabled," then click "OK."
    2) This next part is going to be a bitter pill to swallow. When Microsoft launched Vista, it created a new "security feature" called PatchGuard which disallows direct kernel access to third-party applications. Antivirus vendors like McAfee, Symantec, Avast, etc. all have to use a kernel API rather than direct kernel access. However, Microsoft's own antivirus product -- Windows Live OneCare -- has complete access to the kernel without an API.
This appears to have created a weird situation with iTunes. I have reinstalled my system twice, both with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista, and it seems that merely having a third-party antivirus product installed is sufficient to cause this problem. I've tried Avast, McAfee, Symantec and TrendMicro's products. The problem will not go away even if you turn off scanning, put in exceptions, etc. With Avast, I even terminated all of its processes and stopped its services. No dice. Just having a third-party antivirus product installed -- EVEN IF IT IS NOT RUNNING -- will cause this issue.
However, the second you UNINSTALL your third-party antivirus software, the problem goes away -- every time. I've sync'ed movies over and over again to test this, and it's definitely the primary source of the problem.
Obviously, running without antivirus software in this day and age is unacceptable, but there is one product that's free from this problem; in fact, it's the only product that still has direct kernel access. I'm running Windows Live OneCare on a 90-day trial right now, and after running more tests, I've confirmed my hypothesis. Any antivirus product with direct kernel access is fine. The problem is that Windows Live OneCare is the ONLY antivirus product right now with direct kernel access.
If you're running Windows Vista 32-bit, there may possibly be a second antivirus option. My Windows Vista-based gaming laptop uses Computer Associates' AV product, and it's never had a problem syncing with my iPod. I haven't really tested other products on it, though, so your mileage may vary. I can't say for certain that it's a safe bet.
So there you have it: one month of my nights and weekends down the toilet to fix an issue Apple and Microsoft should be handling. I feel like I've paid $500 for the privilege of being an unpaid Apple Q.A. tester. At this point, they should pay ME for the time I've wasted on this issue.

  • IPhone Album Art Question

Okay, I've got music playing on iPhone 4.  Phone goes into sleep mode (screen goes off, music still playing)  When I "awaken" the phone (music still playing) with some songs the song's album art appears on the 'slide to unlock' screen.  But for others my regular wallpaper is displayed.  I'd rather have the album art show up all the time when playing.  I have tried to find differences between these song files but can not.  I have added art to all song files but can not change this behavior.  I have tried letting iTunes add the album art, but this does not change the behavior either.  ALL songs show their album art when the iPhone is "awake."  It's only when "awakening" the iPhone while songs are playing that art displays for some and not for others.  Does this make sense to anyone?

Part of that 157.5mb is probably for files that iPod needs to operate. I removed the album art and other was still about 76mb on my iPod.
Also, I noticed that if I added a video, the size of other went up about 1-2mb. So there are probably some support files that get created. Also, Games would be in the Other category, as well as Contacts. Audiobooks are probably in the Audio category.
Even if you never used the iPod as a hard drive, you may want to +Enable disk use+ and open it up in a Windows Explorer window.
Ultimately, you can use the Restore button in iTunes to erase the iPod and then re-sync it.

  • Complicated album art question

here is what i have: an album made up of songs by different artists - such as an 80's album. I have put the individual album art for each song, rather than one generic album cover.
so, while viewing the albums in Cover Flow, the first track is generally the album art that is displayed for the 80's album. However, is some rare occasions, a random track within the album is displayed for the album art.
any idea why, and an idea how to set the album art to come from the first track?

  • Album art not syncing

This was briefly mentioned in a couple of threads, but I thought it should have a thread of its own.
I got my pre-order Touch yesterday (week 38), and everything for the most part looks great. I've had no internet problems, screen problems, syncing problems, etc.
When I first synced my iPod, it took a while, which I expected. After syncing, I immediately began listening to music and strolling through cover flow. Everything looked fine. When I synced it again, removing some albums that I just never listen to, I noticed that some album art isn't present. Also, when I synced it this time, it said that there was some diagnostic information from my iPod being sent to Apple.
Now, there is no album art for albums beginning with T through those starting with #'s. In cover flow, you can see the album art only when it's not being viewed directly. If you go directly to it on cover flow, you just see the blank box. In list mode, it just shows the typical blank box for album art for these albums. A change had to take place, because the first album I listened to had album art. Now, it doesn't.
Are there any others having this problem?

I am having this issue and too want to know how to fix it. :[

  • Songs with the same album art not grouped together in iTunes for Windows

Brand new iTunes user here - do not yet have an iPod! (Needed some music only on iTunes)
When I first started up iTunes, it imported all of my music I already had on my computer. A few of them are soundtracks with different artists.
When they are shown in the iTunes library, the soundtracks have been broken up by Artist instead of staying as a whole album. How do I get the songs back together as one album? I found the folder on my computer where they are stored and combined them there, but they are still separate in the iTunes library.
    Thanks from a total newbie!

Mark the tracks on the album as "Part of a compilation" and fill in the Album Artist field as "Various Artists". Click on the first track of your album to highlight it, hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight everything in between. Right click on the selection and choose Get Info. You'll get a message asking if you want to edit multiple items, say yes. If you are using iTunes 8 in the box that opens go to the Options tab and change "part of a compilation" to Yes and choose OK.
Also in your library click on the title bar of album column to bring all the tracks in the same album together. If you keep clicking in the title you can choose it to sort by Album, Album by Artist or Album by Year. Clicking on the little triangle on the right side of the column header changes the sort direction. Pointing up and the column is sorted in Ascending order (A to Z). Pointing down and the column is sorted in Descending order (Z to A).

  • New album art feature and the album art screen saver

    Hi,
I've been using (and enjoying) the built-in album art screen saver for my locked screen for a long time. A few days after I've updated to iTunes 7, I began to delete old covers of my favorite albums (low resolution, bad color, read: Google image search) and applied the better-looking ITMS covers by selectively using the "get album art" feature.
Since I did that, those favorite albums do not appear in the screen saver rotation anymore.
I'm aware that the downloaded covers aren't saved in-file but in the /Album Artwork folder, so I'm certain that's the problem - the screen saver isn't programmed to look for those.
Now, does a workaround exist for that? Does Apple plan a small update (unlikely) / did anybody write a compatible clone / did anybody found a hack? Unfortunately, it's not in the localizible part of "iTunes Artwork.saver".
Thanks in advance for your help!

Same problem that I am having. I enjoyed the album art screen saver. Since I updated to v7 the screen saver doesnt seem to work correctly. Spent the first day of release getting most of my albums (shockingly more then I thought). Enabled the screen saver, but only got 4 albums to show up, no others. Testing it more, I removed the art for the albums that showed up, which got me to 1 album, removed and then got the error that my iTunes Library had no albums with artwork. Weird.. Removed my library, reloaded, and ALL the artwork is gone. Tried going a few albums at a time manually and it shows in iTunes, the new Album Art Dir updates with new stuff. but nothing for the screen saver. Good idea in principle, kinda bad in excuction is my thoughts right now. Hope for a fix soon.

  • Album Art Screen Saver

    Hi,
I use the above screen saver. At times when I return to my computer and "wake" it out of the screen saver, the screen saver will freeze for a while (varying from a few seconds to a couple of minutes) and only then will close.
Any ideas? it only happens on this saver.
    Danbo

The album art that you manually inserted is stored within the song's file, and so is the art you get with a purchased download.
The art which iTunes 7 fetches for you, on the other hand, is not stored within the relevant files, but is instead all kept in a new folder, ~/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/.
A way you can check this in practice is to transfer a purchased song, or one you've manually added art to, to another computer - the art will go with it. If you transfer a song for which iTunes 7 retrieved the art, the song will transfer without artwork.
The screensaver is part of the OS rather than iTunes and hasn't been updated recently, so is simply unaware of this new art storage location and isn't looking there.

  • Add Album Art - Having Problems - HELP!

I'm having problems adding album art to my itunes library. I've already done the "advanced"--->"Get Album Art" thing but there are quite a few albums that iTunes DIDN'T find. So, I selected one that iTunes didn't find and I drug a .jpg file from a folder, into the bottm-left corner of iTunes and it associated that image with all the files I'd selected from that particular album. Great...so far.
The problem came when I tried to do the same thing a second time, with another album. Now, the little window at the bottom left reads, "Album Art not Modifiable!" I've tried dragging images of the album cover into the space anyway, but to no avail. WHAT GIVES?
Can someone tell me how to fix these missing album covers?
Also, some of the albums iTunes didn't 'find' the artwork for are albums that are even sold BY iTunes! How could it not find the album art for albums I can find right there in iTunes?? I have a new iPhone and, because of the way you can surf albums and songs, it's really important that I get all the album art stuff squared-away!
    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME OUT!
    Thanks, in advance!

Instead of trying to drag the art into iTunes, you
can copy and paste it. To do this, right click on a
song with incorrect or missing artwork. Choose "Get
Info" from the menu that opens. Then click on the
artwork tab--if there's wrong artwork showing, click
on the album cover and then the delete button--now
you'll have a blank box. (If you've already
right-clicked and selected "copy" for the correct
jpeg you've found)--right click in this blank box and
choose "paste". Then click on the ok/yes/save
button--whatever it is in the lower right corner and
your correct artwork should show up in iTunes.
If you want to do an entire album--hold down your
shift key and highlight all of the songs on the
album, right click>get info>say yes when you get the
protest box>choose the artwork tab>right click and
    choose paste.
Your song tags have to exactly match the way songs
are tagged in the iTunes store to have the artwork
download automatically. Sometimes a misplaced space
can be the culprit. Often iTunes downloads the wrong
artwork--so allowing iTunes to handle your album art
    is not foolproof!
When I try to do what you suggested, I get a iTunes warning that says:
"The Song "Song Name Here" cound not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
If I click "Yes" I get a browser window, and if I click "Cancel" I get the info page you talked about; but I can't click on the image because the "Artwork Tab" doesn't exist! I checked some other files and it turns out, that the "Artwork" tab ONLY shows up on files where there's ALREADY some artwork showing! My problem is not that the WRONG artwork is associated with the song or album, it's that there isn't ANY artwork associated with it.
So my question is still: HOW do I associate artwork with music that doesn't show a picture, even after iTunes has searched for the appropriate one and come up with NO image at all?
I'm wondering why iTunes can't locate the original file on some of these songs, though. The only thing I can think of is that, because I'm in the process of re-organizing my music on my computer into album folders, I may have moved a lot of files from the location where iTunes originally found them. Some songs, iTunes has no problem locating, but they seem to be the songs that are part of complete albums I've created outside iTunes and then ADDED to my "My Music" folder, where iTunes seems to find it, shortly after it's added to the folder. So, this makes me think I would be better off deleting EVERYTHING from my Library (except those songs/albums I bought from iTunes) and then RE-add ONLY the re-organized music folders- keeping all the stuff I have yet to straighten-out, completely out of iTunes until it IS organized. How do I clear my library and, then, how do I rebuild it from the music folders I choose? Do you think this would fix my problem?
