Album art tagging vs linking?

Hello helpful people
I am trying to find out if there is a way to determine which of my tracks have the album art linked to the file, as is the case for music bought directly from the Apple Store and where iTunes' "Get album artwork" functionality is used to download the album art.
Before I fully understood the mechanisms that control and manage album art, I was using a combination of two methods to add it; 1) iTunes' "Get album artwork" and 2) by scouring the web for decent cover art images (or correct ones where Apple's were wrong) and dragging them into the "Album art" box of the appropriate tracks in iTunes (and thus into the files' tags). This means that I now have a mixture of methods at work, and besides simply being irked by the inconsistency of it, if I were to ever divorce myself from iTunes I would lose all the cover art for those tracks and albums for which the art is merely linked, and not incorporated into the files themselves as a tag.
I would like to be able to identify all the tracks with linked album art, and so be able to select them all and tick the "Album art" box as blank, thereby deleting all the linked instances of album art. I appreciate that this leaves me with a lot of work to replace the now deleted art, but given the growing number of programs out there that will scour the web and automatically download album art I think it is not an insurmountable task.
Hmmm... Would simply deleting the iTunes/Album Artwork folder do the trick? The actual image files that are the tracks are linked to are stored in there, right? So if I deleted this folder I should essentially have deleted all the instances of linked artwork in my library... right?
Afterthought: This whole issue might also be moot if there is software that will download the album art and save it in the file tags, and will override the linked iTunes album art in cases where it exists. Does anyone know of any suitable program? I have my library rigged up to play on both my Mac and PC so it could be either a Windows or Mac program.
On a more discursive note, I'm surprised there isn't more on this issue out there. I did a fair bit of searching and came up with nothing, though I have to assume this has been discussed and I just missed the mark. It seems to me a pretty frightening prospect that if I had relied on iTunes for all my album art I would have to give it all up and start from scratch if I ever wanted to leave iTunes for something else. I don't think users are aware of how shackled they are by this aspect of iTunes, and it makes me wonder if this was implemented intentionally for that purpose, or if it was genuinely a matter of opitmizing iTunes' code and functionality.
Thanks!

iTunes has nothing to do with it.
When MS developed the WAV format, they chose not to include tags for album artwork (or much else).

  • Music Album Art and Blackberry Link Issues

I have been using blackberry for ages and have never had an issue with the media sync, it normally has worked properly. i had the z10 when it came out and syncing my music via blackberry link had worked well also, music album art showed up on my device. However, since getting my blackberry Q10 this has all changed.
    1) I use a macbook pro
    2) I have the most up to date version of bb link
    3) I use a 16gb memory card
In the past two weeks since i have got the Q10, i have never once been able to get my music album art unto the the device, i have formatted the memory card over 10 times, i even went as far as doing a security wipe of the device itself. i have also gone into the file manager settings and and cleared the music folders, no joy!!
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS!!! I used to love my music on blackberry especially with my album art which showed on the Z10 so why isn't it showing on the q10. i don't have the z10 anymore to check.
Futhermore now when i try to sync music on the bb link some song are not even being transferred unto the device as if it just randomly selects the music it puts on the device.

Well, finally someone in the same boat as me. I use a Pc with windows 7. I previously had a Z10, switched to a Q10, with the same issues on both phones. Sometimes the artwork would show up, often adding a new song would corrupt all the artwork. I've even retagged all my mp3's, by wiping the metadata and reinserting the tags. No luck. I've formatted my phone, memory card, everything.
Ironically, the same memory card inserted into my old Bold 9900 and 9700 work fine, displaying all the artwork correctly.
I have spent hours, maybe even DAYS trying to fix this horrible problem. Someone help us!!!
I should add that now all of my albums are in individual folders, completely correctly named, with the latest ID3 tags. Even bypassing BlackBerry Link, and just using USB mass storage mode doesn't change things.

  • Copy album art prob

As I copy album cover art to recently imported album music, I am finding that not all tunes in the album have the full image.  On a pc I can copy and paste but I cannot seem to do this on the wife's Macbook Pro.  Ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

    Hello,
I am having a problem too, just in how to link the album art to files.
I play some songs, they fine, others not, wish i knew how to set the linking so I could manage the album art manually by linking to certain mp3 files. IE two or three songs come from the one art img.
With your problem however, it sounds like the pc media player has downloaded art for your songs, kindly put them somewhere for you to see when listening to your music (on CD[if so have a look at the folder settings in the tool options bit of WMP],
This understood, then when you play a copy of this file from another/different location, its not displayed?. Perhaps an album art manager is required too?
Or the folder file(another unknown 4 me] or the album art files are needed for the cd covers of the songs in the new folder[if unlike above WMP just reads the folder the music is in for the album art files of the cd covers for your mp3 tracks.
    wish i knew more

  • Album Art Prob

I have a Creative Zen Vision:M 60GB. I have suddenly got a problem putting album art for CDs onto my player. Never had a problem before. I would burn a CD onto my hard dri've using CDex. I would then play one of the tracks using Windows Media Player which would automatically pick up what album was playing and display the album art. Once the album art was picked up by WM Player, I would go back to the file, copy it and then paste it on to my player. At the moment, as?I play a track from the file through WM Player, it picks up the album art as normal but when I paste the file into my player, the player does not show album art. Any ideas?

  • Yet another missing album art question...

OK, I just received my second 80 GB Apple ipod Classic. The first one was defective out of the box and this (these?) is (are?) my first ipod. I'd heard all the horror stories about itunes and since I have other media players, ripping and tagging utilities I'm happy with, I really have no intention of using itunes for anything more then updating my ipod and manually synching my music.
I do have one question though. How do I get album art to display for my music? First of all, I unchecked every option in itunes that I could find about updating missing data and downloading album art. I even unchecked the box under My ipod that says "show album art" (maybe mistakenly thinking that was referring to synching album art. All of my mp3's are tagged properly and have the album art, scanned by me from my actual discs embedded in the file in the album art tag. I would think these should display if the ipod is capable of displaying album art, regardless of any checkboxes I've fooled with in itunes but all I get on my ipod are little gray boxes with black musical note symbols in them.
What did I do wrong? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

That's indeed the reason your album art doesn't show on the iPod. Check this box, maybe resync, and the iPod should show the images you embedded in the mp3-files.

  • Question on Lost Tags and Album Art

O.K., I mentioned in another thread that my iTunes library suddenly vanished, but I have been able to “Add file to library” to get everything back in there. Unfortunately, a lot of my album art and my tagging went back to the way it was before I modified it. If I open iTunes again and find nothing there (seems unfortunately to be common) and have to add the folder back in, is there anyway to do that with all the tags and album art in tact?

    Hi Ken,
If this is what I think you are referring to Ken, then don't worry, all is not lost.
This has happened to me once or twice in the past when either installing a new version of iTunes or when I have re-linked my iPod to my other computer.
One thing to check first though:
If you open iTunes and look in your Library and select any track you like (you don’t kneed to play it) and make sure that you have the 'Show or Hide Song Artwork' tab at the bottom left of iTunes (its the fourth one in) selected, can you see the Artwork for your track?
I know you are concerned about the artwork on your iPod, but this is important, if it is showing that’s great. If not, it might just be switched off. If you look at the grey bar that makes the top of the Artwork box that views the image, does it say 'Selected Song' or 'Now Playing'? If it is the latter, then with your mouse just click on it and your Artwork for that track should appear.
Makes sure this is the case for a few others, and if so, your artwork is not lost and can easily be put back on to your iPod.
Now Make sure your iPod is connected and showing in the Sources list on the right of iTunes.
Now go into the iPod options menu by going to the Edit menu and selecting the bottom option 'Preferences' and then opening the iPod tab. You will see an option to show your artwork on your iPod. Select this then click OK out of the Preferences and do an update.
iTunes will then say its updating your iPod, and when it has confirmed that your music is updated, it will then import all your artwork back into your iPod and it should then be present when you use your iPod.
Depending how many tracks you have on your iPod and in iTunes, this might take quite some time. For me last time without about 4 tracks on an AMD Athlone this took about 40 minutes.
I hope this is of help.

  • (ios5 ipad bugs)I can't get changes of album art, artist, album and other tags to show up in the iPad music player, but they show up correctly in the iTunes device view. Certain random songs do not sync correctly.   Wifi sync hasn't worked yet.

(ios5 ipad bugs)I can't get changes of album art, artist, album and other tags to show up in the iPad music player, but they show up correctly in the iTunes device view. Certain random songs do not sync correctly.   Wifi sync hasn't worked yet.
I mostly use technology for education and professional audiovisuals and lights.
I don't sync  music because I use music from at least 4 different computers. (manually mange music)
I use my iPad to play performance tracks for church and a local gospel group out of our church, Won4Christ.
I chose to buy the iPad because the laptop of one of the group members (dellxps running iTunes) was randomly losing and mixing up music and I wanted a more stable option that was bigger than my iPod touch.
I tried to add some data to music libraries that I previously added to my iPad, but the data only shows up when looking at the device in iTunes.
Wifi sync has not worked on either my laptop or desktop ( both running windows 7 enterprise 64 and newest iTunes) not really a big issue, but very annoying
When browsing through library playlist albums on the iPad, random artwork shows up on playlists with no artwork that you touch while dragging, and it does not go away until you change to another navigation tab and back.
Random songs out of hundreds that I added showed up in iTunes grayed out with a sync circle beside them.  Those songs would play back okay on the iPad but were unplayable through the iTunes device view.  I had to delete the songs manually through the library along with the playlist and add them again.
These seem to be major stability bugs in the "new" music app and iTunes.  My only option right now seems to be to delete the songs that I want to change and re-add them with the changes already applied rather than changing the id3 tags and artwork on the existing music. I hope apple will release updates to resolve these issues.
Thank you for actually making it to the end of this manuscript of annoyances.

Just wondered if anyone had any other suggestions.

  • ID3 Tags/Album Art

I'm currently in the process of updating ID3 Tags and Album Art of my library. I plan to remove the iTunes database and import all songs again, hopefully this should pick up all my changes.
My question is how can I replicate this to my iPod? Do I have to delete from the iPod then add again? Or is there a simpler method?
    Thanks.

Hiya, my advice is to uncheck the box for syncing album art.
    Sync the iPod.
Then re-check that box, and sync again.
This method is also useful if your iPod artwork acts funny from track to track on the same album. It rebuilds the iPod's artwork cache.

  • How to access links in album art in iTunes 11?

In particular podcasts often have links in their album art. Clicking on it while the album art was shown in the lower left corner of iTunes 7(?) through 10 send you to a website with more info about the podcast or the particular song playing (what was linked to was up to the podcast producer).
In the album art mini-player (the only way to see the album art in a reasonable size), the links are no longer active in iTunes 11.

This is actually not accurate. You do not have to switch to the Artists tab to view artwork. When in the Playlist tab, there is a "View" pull down in the upper right corner of the screen. Click on it and select "Artist List" to change the view (similar to the format of the Artists tab mind you) to view the track artwork.
Take note that the "artist list" on the left side is like a side anchored column browser but the artwork shown here is not for the current album in the playlist, just the first cover iTunes finds under  each particular artist (like in the Artist tab). (And another goofy design decision IMHO, why show artwork here at all?). The actually album/track artwork is on the playlist side. You also can't enable the full column browser in this view as it's tied to the default "List" view.
I don't necessarily prefer this new approch but wanted to clarify for others.

  • Album art not tagged properly iPhone 4

In iTunes, ALL my songs have their album art covers TAGGED PROPERLY!
Upon transfer to iPhone, the art covers are NOT Synced/Tagged properly as the art covers of songs uses art covers from other songs!
EVERY TIME I correct this, it still is messed up!!
I had to RESTORE my iPhone then load back up ALL the songs, etc... back onto my iPhone 4 and it still does NOT WORK!
I then used MP3Tag to PROPERLY TAG ALL the album art covers to my songs then re-import those songs BACK INTO ITUNES 10.x.x.
Even when I manually correct it and it shows the art cover properly in iTunes, when I disconnect the iPhone and go to those SAME songs that I fixed, the art covers are MESSED UP AGAIN!!!
    Weird thing is...
    1. This problem ONLY occurs on the iPhone!!
    2. This problem does NOT occur on my iTouch or Nano or iPods!
    3. This issue has been around since the Original iPhone and still present through iPhone 4 as I've looked online and found MANY users have posted about the same problems!
    WTH IS GOING ON?!?!
Why hasn't Apple FIXED this **** problem by now?!
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm really PO about this!
    Thank you!

    "bump"
does anyone have any answers to this?
I have tried updating my video drivers, I am running directX 9, and i tried the dxdiag and everything is fine. DirectDraw Acceleration and Direct 3D Acceleration are both Enabled.

  • Songs Won't Play, Album Art Not Modifiable, ID3 Tags, Need Help

I have a 32 GB iPod Touch, Windows Vista, the latest version of iTunes and Quicktime as well as the latest iPod software.
I noticed the other day that a bunch of my songs were missing album art. I have a library with almost 7,000 songs and I have album art for everything. I went to the songs to attempt to fix the album art and noticed that it said, Album Art Not Modifiable, in the Album Art preview screen. I thought that was weird and it wouldn't let me add new album art to these albums.
I also noticed that none of these songs would play. They wouldn't play on my iPod or on iTunes. You can click play and it looks like it's going to play, but the counter never leaves "0".
I thought something was wrong with my files and that I would have to re rip or download the songs. However, by chance I opened one of the songs in Window Media Player and it worked, so I knew the files were fine.
I did a search online and found several people with the same problem and a few things to try. But nothing worked until I stumbled upon a solution of setting the ID3 tags to version "None", then setting them to version 2.4. I tried it and it worked.
But now it keeps happening, I get a new group of albums every day that won't play.
Can anyone tell me what is causing this?
    How do I prevent it?
Do I really need to take every song in my library and change the ID3 tags, that could take forever?
Could anyone please help and shed some light on this.
    Thank You

Thanks for replying, Please read our Operating System details before taking a guess about what 'could' be the problem...
I think I figured it out anyway, Windows Media Player might be adding extra information that iTunes does not like, either Windows Media Player and/or iTunes 7.7.1 don't conform to ID3 v2.4 standards...
Please fix your software, Apple. I know how you love to be unique and mock PC users with your one-sided advertisements but at least conform to the ID3 standards.

  • Id3 tag album art

I need a program that includes the album art inside the id3 tag in my mp3's. Does anyone know a good one?
I found out about eyeD3, I'll try it when I get home, but I'd like more alternatives.

EasyTAG can do this as well.

  • Error -50 when trying to add album art.

The only reason these is really peeving me because I literally spent around 5 hours putting album art to the 450+ albums on my iPod. This is what I did.
Because my friend advised me that syncing with the library is bad and the fact that i'm a super organization freak I added the album art directly to the tracks under iPod as opposed to editing the tags from my library and syncing. I figured since ID3 tags can be made straight to the tracks on the iPod, I could add the artwork. Turns out after I added all the artwork and through iTunes I could view it, they weren't showing up on my iPod, which is problem number one.
Half of my albums already had the artwork. I saw an option in iPod option under iPod>>Music to display artwork. I unchecked it, it said it was deleting artwork from iPod. I rechecked it, and it said it was optimizing, and the bar SLOWLY filled, about a minute in it gives me error -50 "The iPod cannot be updated" anybody know whats going on?

This usually indicates an input/output error.  Sounds like some data corruption where your printer drivers are installed.  See my FAQ*:

  • Album Art in Zen Vision M / How did you do

This question is for those of you who have actually gotten the Album Art to show up in the Zen Vision M.
I have been trying to figure it out for 3 days straight and I need some serious. My firmware version is .0.0 is this the right firmware?
I have made an attempt with WMP 0 using the Advanced Tag Edit, and I can get the Album Art to show up in WMP "Now Playing" tab, but when I sync to my Vision M, the album art does not transfer into it. I have tried, manually dropping the album art in several directories, the root / album / and photo directories but the album art does not appear.
I have even tried RealPlayer and a few Album Art programs on this message board and I get the same results.
So can someone provide me some set by step instructions or give me a link to where those intructions might be?

    Hello all:
I have an idea for those who are looking to add album art:
I have yet to see if it works with the Vision:M (mine will be here next week), but I used mediamonkey to add album art to my mp3 catalog (,200+ songs). Its easy to do and you can add art to an entire album of songs at one time. It uses Amazon's database for album art. As long as you have things properly tagged its completely automated (It took me ~.5 hours to ad album art to my entire collection). It will also ask you if you want the picture to be embedded in the id3 tag (which as far as I know you do for the Vision:M). Finally, mediamonkey is a great Mp3 management tool. Its free and you can get it at www.mediamonkey.com.
