Album Art - Why can't iTunes do what WMP does!!?

I'm having problems with my album art on the iPod - I have a 40gig photo. It got screwed up with the previous updater (would only show Mercury Rev's deserter songs for ALL albums!), and has now completely vanished with the latest updater, although all artwork is still on iTunes.
I was downloading some CD's at work today using Windows Media Player, and not only did it automatically download the album artwork, it also displays this when you click on the folders in Window's explorer - much more elegant than iTunes...
Why can't Apple implement this for iTunes.
And how do I fix my Album art problem!???!!

the reason iTunes is different than WMP is twofold:
The auto downloading, if I understand correctly, is under contract from a service that Apple didn't sign up to. Therefore WMP gets the files, iTunes doesn't.
The art in iTunes is kept, as per the official specifications, within the file itself, no in the folder.
You can probably fix the art problem by clearing and reloading the iPod.

  • Why can't iTunes do what iPod does?

On my iPod, whenever I start it up, it picks up (hour later, day later, week later, etc.) exactly where it left off.
With iTunes, it is clueless! I have several thousand mp3s and would like to listen to them sequentially, but I can't!
Does anyone know of any way to add this functionality? (Please don't tell me about the "recently played" feature because it does not do what I am asking about.) Thanks.

An iPod is really never "off" but in a hiberation state. If the battery goes flat then you would lose you place on the iPod.
If you never close iTunes - and just minimize the iTunes window - then it will be on the last song played. If you close iTunes then reopen it it will of course open to the default position - which is the last window that you were looking at before closing iTunes- if you were in a specific playlist then it will open to that playlist but not the song.
Suggest your idea to Apple and then they might add it as a future feature. The more feed back Apple gets then the better the chance that features will be added.

As note already on the iBA forum [ AppleID for ibooks publishing ], you need two IDs. You can't use your developer ID.
If you already signed up for books with that ID, you need to talk to Apple to straighten things out.

That would fall under Browsing History. Firefox > History -> Show All History

  • HELP. album art problems. can't sync itunes.

the album art appears correct on itunes but when i play the songs on my ipod the artwork for the wrong album will appear, like they all get jumbled. and not all of my songs for certain artists will go on my ipod, they play on itunes, but won't show up on my ipod. please help.
    fifth generation   Windows XP

I have had a similar issue, but much more...started with the messed up album art, and now the following problems are happening (5th Generation 30 GB ipod):
won't play video - Just black screen for 10 seconds, then back to menu
sometimes won't play podcasts - when clicking on podcast it goes to the play screen and then without the timer moving it acts as if it's played the entire podcast, and goes back to menu.
also, sometimes the music or podcast gets terribly garbled almost like "electronic noise"
I have restored 2 times, and reset numerous times, but it continues to happen!!

  • Why can't iTunes list composers

I just bought 150 songs. Probably 80% of them have no composer listed. I thought I could look them up, but that is proving very difficult.
If I buy the hard-copy CD, ALL of the composers for EVERY song are listed. Why can't iTunes provide the songwriter of each song they sell???

This could turn into quite a p*ssing contest
I don't see why it should turn into anything. If you are not interested in it, don't look at it.
Some people are very interested in this info as some are interested in the cover art, lyrics, production notes, etc.
The publisher has this info with readily available. And the publisher/label is VERY interested in who wrote the song.
iTunes Producer is very easy to add this info.
To add this to a song take almost zero effort.
Also, the whole idea of ID3 tags is to have the information available for a song.
Before formats with these tags were avalable, everything had to be named some cryptic combintaion of letters and/or stored on folders/subfolders withthe artist name or some way to know what the song is.
Since the tags are there, why not use them?

How do you download album art not available in iTunes store.
I could copy and paste in the older version but not since the latest update

I, too, relied on the name of the iTunes library being displayed on the top header bar of the iTunes window. I have 2 iTunes libraries that I go back and forth on all the time, and now I really have to look at the contents to figure out which library I'm in at any given moment.  What a pain!!  And what a stupid move to diminish functionality, Apple.  You folks have been doing this more all the time lately -- taking away perfected functionality -- and either deleting it or changing it just for the sake of a new look.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!  Please!
A good example of that is the dim grey text in all too much Apple everything these days.  Black is beautiful, please!  And especially useful in reading!!  And, apparently, enough people thought so, too, since I see black text is back in iTunes 11.  It went grey, and you heard from enough people that that was something no one should have changed.  Well, as the Gipper said: Here you go again!  Bring back the Library Name.  You've got plenty of room; you don't need to put it in another vertical space -- just put in in line with the other stuff you've got there.  Put it left of the "Search Library."  That would be fine.  But, just do it!

  • Why can't itunes have DVD extras avaliable to download??

How come on every site out there that that makes movie available to download, there are not any extras or special features that are avaliable? I don't think i am a minority out there when i say that the only reson i buy DVDs is specifically for the extras or the commentaries, other wise i would just Nextflix them. So why can't itunes make them avaliable? Like if you buy the movie then they can have the commenary build in like as dvds have them build into the audio tracks. Or maybe the other extras can be a free extra dowload avaliave to people that purchase the movie. Otherwise i'm not paying $14.00 to download a movie that does not contain the special features that the DVD would have contained.
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

iTunes movie downloads only have what the studios allow.
I am sure that the studios make more money with DVD sales also , that could be why no extras in iTunes.
I won't download movies because of the low quality. A 2.5" screen for 2 hours, hahaha.

Is there any way to get custom jpeg album art to stick in iTunes 11.1.4?

You can Right-Click too to bring up the Get Info dialog box. If you go to the artwork tab, (the last tab) then you can click the add button, and a standard Mac dialog box opens and you can navigate to the jpg file of your choice in a normal Mac fashion.

Forgive my ignorance but I have never hear of iTunes Document Manager Pro. If you mean Document Manager Pro, i was able to find that. Back to your problem, have you tried opening one of those files in the iOS iWorks apps? Form the quick read that I did about this, .cwk files can be opened by Pages, Numbers or Keynote, depending on what type of document that it is and those files can be read by Document Manager Pro, after properly saving them. I don't see that you can go directly from the .cwk file in Document Manager Pro without converting them first.
I took a very quick look at the app, so I may be a missing something about its capability.

  • Why can't iTunes resume playback of the last track I played before closing it?

If Safari can recall the last page I had open when I closed it, and Preview can open the last documents I had open, why can't iTunes resume playback of the last track I played?
Come on guys, a search on the internet will bring up discussions from the early 2000s with the question of resuming playback. Just add the feature already.

HI THanks for this helpful post. I will try this. I have 2 iPods. One is 3rd Gen. I love the little small square, so I bought it on ebay. Then I got a little iPod nano ( again a tiny square shape)
So I tried to sync them today and update them.
This is the response I got.
I get a message that the original file cannot be found and asks if I want to try and locate file.  I locate the file and it's empty?!
This freaked me out because I have all this music I love. The only thumb drive is my back up drive which is not a thumb. Will the back up drive have my music files too?
    Thanks-Peace Out

  • ITunes got smarter about album art, why not the iPod Classic?

I'm a long time iTunes fan and noticed that iTunes USED to be "stupid" about album art where the user had to paste the art in multiple times (into every track) or it didn't display in cover flow properly.  And, once you did this, then a synched iPod would also display the correct album art on every track instead of SOME of the tracks, which I saw it do...
But the latest versions of iTunes have noticed got "smarter" and I have seen it now where you only need to paste in one image, and iTunes displays it as needed AUTOMATICALLY on all other tracks on the same album.
This is obviously a step forward, especially if you have 5,000 tracks on your iPod!!
I just got a new iPod Classic and I have concluded after a lot of technical research and experimentation that it is still "dumb", and seems to need the album art pasted into every track STILL.   It's annoying to me as a computer scientist that the same feature or benefit isn't there on both platforms.
I know this is a pretty advanced question compared to the normal iTunes user, but I was hoping that someone could point me to a better solution than having to paste up to 5,000 album arts into my iPod?
Thanks in advance for any help, I appreciate any comments.
    D.

As a computer scientist I love your handle!    Are you real?  <jk>
I go way way way back with iTunes, I was using it to rip CD's, and as my primary music player on my desktops and laptops beginning in the 90s when it was Mac-only!  Long before the iTunes Store even appeared, in fact.  I don't actually have even one purchased iTunes store track, just have 5,000 ripped files from my own purchases.  I also have edited the files I've imported, so my collection has only stuff I have pre-listened to and like personally, so I found Shuffle play to be a "100% win" and I use it exclusively on both my laptop and my iPod.  It's a "100% win" because I stack the deck, to use an american expression.
I had a large CD collection of 500+ CDs so you can see I am a major music enthusiast.  Unfortunately, I don't possess the CDs any more but I do have the electronic copies...
I loved how ITunes was time-optimized algorithmically to high efficiency in the ripping process (no doubt Steve Jobs guidance) and automatically looked up track names and artists on the Internet, and automatically managed the MP3s files too.  It's competition (Winamp and WMP) still required you to manually manage everything.  I also used the burn mp3 cd's function which made single-button burning of up to 12 hours of playlisted content a LOT.
So, that's why I do recall the early days when it was not as "smart" as it is now.
I visited your scripts page, a lot of very cool things there, but, if I understand correctly, Visual Basic doesn't work on OS X?  That ***** MICROSOFT.  Reminds me of when MS didn't support Apple clients on Exchange!
    Any further suggestions?
    D.

  • Why can't itunes identify albums?

I suspect this question has been asked numerous times, so forgive me for being redundant.  I've been using the iPhone for about 4 years.  The thing I hate about my Apple experience is iTunes seeming ineptitude at properly importing songs from a CD.  Windows Media Player beats iTunes hands down in this respect.  Does anyone have a suggestion to work around this problem?
    Thanks - Al

    alfowler7 wrote:
So, since iTunes can find information about albums I import, please tell me what I'm doing wrong.  Obviously I need to do more than simply rip the CD.
When iTunes reads the CD in your CD drive, it (iTunes) should ask Gracenote for the the album information straight away. You should see the track names, album name and artist all appear as appropriate in the CD import window. If that doesn't happen, check your Edit/Preferences>When you insert a CD: and make sure that Automatically retrieve CD track names from Internet is ticked "on". You will notice the drop-down menu as part of that section as well. Since you are having issues, I suggest that you set the drop-down menu to Show CD which will allow you to check that the track name information is being completed prior to importing.
If this information is missing or incomplete, it is at this point that you should identify the cause, not after importing. Perhaps your iTunes is not able to get online.
Just to clarify something; Gracenote can only identify commercial releases, not home burnt CDs. Frequently, now-days, artists release albums directly, without the use of a record company. In this situation (and even with very new company releases), Gracenote may not have that information yet. It is possible for an individual (including yourself) to submit track information (for a commercial release) to Gracenote through iTunes if so desired. If someone has done just that, with the albums you are having trouble with, but they did not fill in the details correctly, perhaps that is the problem. If you tell us which albums they are, maybe someone else with that album can offer specific help.
I feel the need to make an observation here.
    I made several points in my response to Smirnoff about what happens when a CD is being imported which, if you had read them, might indicate - to you - at which point in the procedure, your process fails and without the need for your "attitude";
    E.G.
    Smirnoff wrote:
When I read about importing in Help, it tells me that the tracks will appear in the Music Library.
Correct, complete with the song titles and album and artist names - as well as appearing in the import window, prior to you selecting Import CD, so you will able to confirm titles before importing.
    and...
    Smirnoff wrote:
Or does iTunes recognise it as an album and create an album title?
Yes, of course. The album will imported into your iTunes Library under the album title and with the artist listed, just as you would expect to see the album information on the CD you imported from.
... and yet you have not acknowledged that. If you had read either of those points, surely you would comment to me about whether that did, or did not, happen in your case, instead of coming out with condescending stuff such as "Well I obviously need your superior skill to operate iTunes" and "Please share your superior wisdom"
    wouldn't you?
Don't you forget, people such as myself post here in order to help other people, (look at the number of points awarded to those who do actually help) and we do so on a voluntary basis. If you are rude to those who offer you help, how long do you think that help will continue? Huh?
One last gesture of help towards you. You say you have a collection of songs in your Library without names, from previous "failed" imports. You can edit the song information in your iTunes Library, even after importing the CD. Highlight the song and select File/Get Info/Info and type in the information you require. You can bulk edit items such as Album Name and Artist by selecting all the required songs and using the same File/Get Info ... Just be cautious that you don't overwrite individual song information. If all else fails, once you have identified and corrected the cause of your initial problem, you could re-import the failed imports.
