Album Artwork Disappearing / Can't be updated.

Hello All,
I recently noticed that my songs have been slowly losing their artwork. Upon further inspection (and forum searching), I've found that this problem has happened to many people.
For the songs with the missing album artwork, I cannot update the songs with new artwork (from both the popup and get info-> album artwork) views. It acts as though iTunes cannot write to the file. I have tried changing the ID3 tag from version 2.4 to 2.3; again, with no success.
I checked the permissions on the file (originally 644) and changed them to a whopping 666; but still, no writes by iTunes.
Does anyone have any other information as to what is going on here? My iTunes version is 7.4.2(4). Reloading my library is not a plausible solution.

I'm still experiencing the album artwork disappearing, however I have figured out a work-around for songs that you cannot 're-add' album artwork to:
1) Try re-adding the song first (alt-click on song, click 'get info', click 'show in finder', then drag back into library).
2) If that doesn't work, re-converting the music (advanced -> convert selection to MP3) should properly re-encode the file (use lossless compression, otherwise your mp3 will deteriorate).

  • Album artwork disappeared after an iTunes error... how can I get I back?

I've been using iTunes for years and out of a clear blue sky I get this error message, "iPhone cannot be synced because the sync session failed to start." After trying a few different things I find a fix that works- turn my iPhone all the way off and then turn it back on. Then when I added a new mp3 song to my iTunes Library and tried to sync it to my phone, the album artwork refused to show up on my phone even though it shows in iTunes. Nothing I did to fix it worked. I tried to add another mp3 song. Same problem. Then as I tried the various 'fixes' I read about here in Apple Support Communities, it made my problem worse! At first only the two new mp3 songs I added were missing album artwork. Now half of the songs I purchased from iTunes are missing album artwork! To add to that, many of the songs that have album artwork at all have the wrong artwork.
    Stuff that didn't work:
Erasing all the music on my phone and resyncing made it worse
My manually added album artwork is already ID3 tagged v2.4
I have never checked the box that converts higher bitrate songs
Manually adding artwork and using iTunes' "get album artwork" feature
    Restoring iPhone from a backup
I am using a MacBook Pro with OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.8.
I have iOS 6.1.4 on my iPhone 5 and I have not updated anything for the past two months.
    PLEASE HELP.

  • ITunes album artwork - how can I stop iTunes downloading the wrong artwork?

I was delighted to see that in the upgraded iTunes there is a facility to download album artwork using, I presume, much the same methodology as downloading track listings.
While my experience of downloading track listings has largely been OK - save for the odd niggle; my experience of the artwork function has been appalling.
Firstly, any release that is territory specific, e.g. UK only, or compilations, downloads the wrong artwork or no artwork at all. But also, the wrong artwork is attributed for classic albums by established acts. E.g. Genesis' Duke, downloads the artwork for Three Sides Line. Also, I have two Led Zeppelin albums and in each case, the art work downloaded was for the cheesy tribute group DREAD Zeppelin!!
Can anyone from Apple comment on this?
Also, if I manually insert the correct artwork; will this be overwritten if in the future I scan for updated artwork across my music collection? I have 65GB+ music on my hard drive, so that is an awful lot of album covers to get through!
    Thanks,
    A

Manually added album art will not be overwritten.

  • I used to be able to view the album artwork bottom left before I updated the software recently, and cannot establish how to set this up again.  Help !!

Before downloading the latest version of I-Tunes, I used to be able to view the ALBUM ARTWORK at bottom left when clicking on a song.
I am now unable to see the artwork.
Is it no longer possible with the updated software ??

Correct, Apple have removed that feature. However, you can still see the artwork of the song that's playing; it's shown in the Now Playing indicator at the top of the iTunes window. It is small, but if you click on it, a larger version pops up.
Also, in Albums View, you can see the album artwork.

  • Album artwork disappearing in iTunes?

I'm running iTunes 11.2.2 on a Mac with MacOS 10.9.3 installed.  For the last several weeks (I don't know when this started, exactly) I've noticed that some of the songs/albums on my iPhone were missing artwork - either that, or it showed the artwork for album 'a' while playing album 'b'. After looking on iTunes, I see that roughly 1/3rd of my albums are missing their art. Some are albums that I burned to my iTunes library, some are ones that I purchased. I've tried right-clicking on the album and selecting "Get Album Artwork" - but this only seems to work about 25% of the time, and it's failing even on albums I purchased through iTunes.
I know for sure that I had artwork for all these albums at one point - is there an archive or a thumbnail gallery somewhere that I can re-connect to? Alternatively, I'm wondering if there's a cache file somewhere that might have been corrupted - and that restoring it might magically reconnect my artwork. I'm grasping at straws here - but I don't relish the prospect of finding artwork again for all these albums...

I have done that but the thing is.... I have all my music on an external hard drive. When you create a new ACC file, it stores the files on the internal hard drive. I do not like keeping anything on my internal hard drive other than my software I run.
With that said, I am guessing that as long as you have music files stored on your internal hard drive, there will not be an issue with your album artwork showing up.
I also store movies on an external hard drive and do not have an issue with the artwork being displayed...
So who knows what the issue is !!!

  • Album artwork problem--can anyone help?

I have a wierd thing happening with my album artwork. All of the artwork is correct in ITunes, and the artwork appears correct when I hold my Itouch lengthwise. However, when I hold my Itouch vertically (i.e. with the button at the bottom) the album art is messed up. For example, I have an U2 album that only displays the art correctly when I hold it side-to-side. Vertically, the album art is blank when I display the album, and when I play the songs I get a cut screen, top half of which is an old Christmas album I've deleted and the bottom of which is art for a television series that I purchased. What's the deal? Is there any way for me to get my album art displaying correctly?

I think I have found a solution. Although it is not 100% guarantee it will work, at least it helps keep my artwork stable.
For PC (I don't have a Mac), right click on the song(s) that causes you problem, convert ID3 tag to version 1.0 (back to basic, eh).
Then edit the tag (if necessary, and add artwork. If it is not fixed, repeat the process one more time.
The key is converting the ID3 tag to the most basic version.

  • GET ALBUM ARTWORK, HOW CAN I IF I DO NOT HAVE A LIBRARY?

HOW DO I GET ALBUM COVER IF SONGS OR NOT ON MY MUSIC LIBRARY, MEANING I ADD MY MUSIC MANUALY,RIP MY CD AND CREATE A PLAYLIST AND DRAG MUSIC INTO THE FOLDER,WHEN I CLICK ON "GET ALUM ARTWORK" NOTHING HAPPENS.. I DO NOT HAVE MY MUSIC ON MY HARD DRIVE ASWELL BECAUSE OF HARD DRIVE SPACE, DOES THIS MEAN I WILL HAVE TO ADD ARTWORK MANUALLY ALSO? AND YES I LOG INOT ITUNES GO A PLAYLIST ON MY IPOD,HIGHLIGHT ALL TRACKS AND GO AND CLICK GET ALBUM COVER, IF ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO PLEASE HELP ME OUT, THANK YOU....

in addition to this you need to do this in itunes on your computer, not from the ipod. So if you rip a cd to your computer, make sure it is labeled identically to how its labeled in itunes, select the tracks and retrieve artwork. This works most of the time, but it still doesn't find some tracks, so then google is your friend. Space issues or not erasing your songs from itunes is not a very good idea after syncing them to your ipod. Eventually the ipod will probably need to be restored, or something else will happen, and if the music has been erased from itunes, then its gone for good. Backup your music somewhere.

  • When I auto-update, album artwork goes bye-bye

I have album artwork for all of my songs on my iTunes. If I upload the songs manually to my iPod, all the artwork shows up. Then if I add a song or two to the iTunes library and then choose auto update to update the iPod to match my music library, all the album artwork disappears. Does anyone know what is going on here??

    Lee,
You need to have your computer connected to the Internet in order for it to find the track info for a CD - it accesses the online GraceNote database to match song profiles. Only if your music isn't already there (which is very unlikely) will it not come up with something.
For the album artwork, it is not contained on the CD itself. You need to search for it. Most people find it on Amazon.com. Click until you get to the big (~300x300) image, save it and edit it on your PC, then drag and drop it into the box in iTunes where it says "drop album artwork here".

  • Missing iTunes album artwork

I switched from a PC to a Macbook about 2 years ago, after putting quite a lot of songs on my computer.  When I had my PC, I ripped CDs using Windows Media Player first, and the album artwork would automatically appear whenever I played the songs or inserted the CD.  I later imported them to iTunes when I downloaded it on my PC.  Whenever I did that, the album artwork disappeared.  When I got my Mac I transferred all the music onto the new computer, and the "Get Album Artwork" command didn't work (even when connected to the Internet); I understand the album artwork might not appear in my song list, but it doesn't even appear when I insert the CD.  Any ideas on how I can get the album artwork (save deleting all my music and re-importing it)?

    Method 1
Select the tracks, right-click and select Get Album Artwork.
Method 2 (If method 1 didn't work, or you want to embed the art it found)
Locate relevant image from an image search of the web. Something in the order of 600 pixels square will work best. Select all the tracks of the album, press ctrl-i to Get Info. and paste the downloaded image into the Artwork panel on the Info tab.
To get artwork updated properly on a device it is sometimes necessary to remove the tracks from the device, then put them back again using iTunes.

  • Mising Album Artwork

Over the last few weeks I've noticed some of my album artwork disappearing from my iPod Touch. At first it was one album gone but now it's about eight. There isn't even the default iTunes black and silver cover, just empty space.
The bug (if that's what it is) seems to affect both artwork from iTunes and artwork from the net.
I've tried everything I can think of including deleting the artwork and then re-inserting it. I haven't tried doing a full reset of my iPod, I'd rather leave that as a last resort because I don't want to have all my apps reset.

    I have using an iPod Touch since January 2009 and I have noticed that since I have installed OS 3.0 on my 2nd Generation Touch and upgrade iTunes to the latest versions, that when I sync album artwork has started to disappear, this happens with the following configuration;
    - ripped CDs where iTunes automatically locates the artwork
    - ripped CDs where I go off and find the artwork on the Internet and then add it to every track in the album
I find that initially the artwork gets copied across fine and then the second time that I sync (copying across more music) a random album that was copied across before gets removed. I know all the artwork is appearing in iTunes, as I go into the 'Get Info' on a particular track and it shows up fine - so I know it is added to the MP3 file.
I don't get this issue with music that I download from iTunes, it is just off of CDs that I rip. Does anyone know if Apple has any plans to resolve this? I don't particularly want to reset the iPod or delete the troublesome files.
    Many thanks in advance

  • ITunes 11 downloaded album art disappeared from first song of many albums

In iTunes 11. the downloaded album artwork disappeared from the first song of many of my albums.
This just randomly happened; it wasn't after an upgrade or any other noticeable event.
The artwork is still associated with all the subsequent songs of the album, just not with the first one.
I do not want to embed the artwork into the music files.
Nor do I want to "Clear Downloaded Artwork" and redo "Get Album Artwork" for the affected albums, since some of the albums are no longer in the iTunes Store, so I won't be able to download their artwork anymore.
The best that I can think of is to:
    1) remove the song that is missing the artwork from itunes without deleting the file from the hard drive
    2) in iTunes, copy another song from the same album
    3) delete the newly copied song from the hard drive without removing it from iTunes
    4) in iTunes, "Get Info" on the newly copied song, which will tell me that it can't be found, and give me the option to "Locate" the file
    5) "locate" the file by selecting from the hard drive the file for the song that was mising its artwork, and that was removed from iTunes in step 1
Unfortunately, this will remove the song's rating, play counts, etc., remove it from any playlists, and change the date added, etc.
Does anyone have a better solution?
    Thanks.

Oh ok. I have just set it to automatically pull cover art but I might try doing each track as you suggested. I just assumed this would be automatic for every track not just the first one.

  • Where did my album artworks go?

I added a new album to my iPad using my MacBook and after updating the files on the iPad, half of the albums artworks were gone in my music library in my iPad. Why and how can I get them back?

    Hello MW1192,
If you don't see your album artwork, you can get iTunes to download the artwork again by right clicking on the album and select Get Album Artwork. For more information take a look at the article below.

  • Loss of album artwork!!

After updating my iPod touch with the iOS 6 software, I have lost all my album artwork.
I have deleted and re synced twice but that hasn't worked as I still have no album artwork.
    Can anybody help?

A little time consuming but fixed nevertheless.  Go and find all your missing artwork album covers in search engine - Google, Wikipedia etc., drag them onto your desktop one by one.  Then go to itunes and highlight each song in every album that has missing artwork, get info for multiple items then click the artwork box and drag the correct pic from desktop into the square, hit okay and it will replace what was there so that when you sync again all the artwork will be on ipod touch.  Had to do this for around 60 album covers but it worked!

  • Use of Album Artwork

So, on the comercials and advertisements it shows the Ipod Nano with the album artwork next to the song titles etc. right on the display screen. Why isn't that working on mine?
Can someone please help me get that funtion to work...If you actually can do that.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi.
First of all, when you play songs in itunes, does the artwork show up in the left hand corner?
If it does, connect the ipod, and go to the edit menu, and then preferences. Go to the ipod tab, and check the box next to "Display album artwork on your ipod". Update as normal and artwork should show up.
If the artwork is not shown in itunes then you have to first get the artwork. One way to do this is to search using google or on amazon for the artwork for each album, and save it to your computer. Then highlight all the songs from that album, right click, go to "get info" , click the artwork tab and add this saved artwork. Then update as normal. For single songs it could be easier to play the songs in itunes, find the rtwork, and drag it into the box in the left hand side of the now playing screen.
    Hope this helps

  • Itunes - album artwork

so i've got a lot of clubland (compilation) albums
when i add them to the Itunes library they add as, for example, clubland 18 [disc 1], etc...
therefore, when i login to my itunes store account and click get album artwork, itunes can't seem to find the artwork for my compilation albums with more than 1 disc
is there a way around this, or can itunes not recognise [disc 1] etc... ?
    cheers for your time

What I found when ripping CD's into iTunes, it must be a "perfect "match to what is on the iTunes store.  The workaround I use is:  See how the artist and title are listed in the iStore.  Go back to iTunes, highlight all the songs on that Disc, right click, choose get info.  change album title to EXACTLY what the iStore has (including any punctuation).  Then download the artwork.  You can repeat to change back the title afterward, and will not loose the artwork.  This workaround works for me.  Good luck
