Album by Artist column

When I change to list view I still get an empty 'Album by Artist' column on the left side that I cannot turn off or move. I have already deselected all column selections but it will not go away. This must be a bug, right? Or am I doing something wrong? Selecting the second view option works and the album art is displayed in that column, but in list view it should not be there.

I have the same issue and I was about to make a new post about it.
Premising that we're talking about the Music section, I have exactly same symptoms, which are:
1. in *song list* view (first) and *cover flow* view (fourth), there's an extra column which belongs to *album list* (second) that allows to view artwork artist/album-artist and album rating.
2. In song list and cover flow it just remains blank, and cannot be hided or moved around
3. If I change the size of the artwork from the dropdown menu, the width of the column gets hugely wide.
4. All new playlists have the same issue.
And also a bonus: there's another column with a number, it basically gives a number to each track. the thing is, in *album list* view it takes the number from the track number, in *song list* and *cover flow* it just counts from 1 to whatever amount your library (or current search result's array) is consisting of.

  • How do you hide the 'Album by Artist' column

I recently bought a brand new MBP and the default iTunes layout is slightly different to how it was on my previous MB. When in songs view, in the main music window, i used to have 3 columns- Name, Artist, Album but on my new MBP, there are 2 additional columns on the far left. One is named 'Album by Artist' and seems to be a sorting option and also displayes album artowrk. The other has no title, but seems to be displaying the tack number in that particular album.
I have tried editing the view options, but there isn't an option for the 'Album by Artist' column to take it off. There is a 'Track Number' option, but it refers to a seperate track number column. Does anyone know how to get rid of these? The 'Album by Artist' one is the most annoying as it takes up a lot of room.
Any help would be massively appreciated!

This is what I have at the moment...
So you do not want to view the  first column with artwork?
iTunes menu View > View options.
    Uncheck Show artwork.
I'd like as close to the layout of iTunes 10 as possible if that makes sense..
Considering I don't know how you had it layed out in iTunes 10...
My iTunes 10 looks exacly like you have above.

  • ITunes 10 How do I get rid of the "Album by Artist" column?

Okay, I don't like the looks of iTunes 10 in general, but I can get used to it. The font was so small, I found where to kick it up to "large" but I can't figure out how to get rid of that first horrible column "Album by Artist" and the column next to it with a number in it that I have absolutely no idea what it's for. I want those two columns OUT. I can make them smaller, but I can't move them or delete them.

Select *List view* instead of *Album list view*. These are in the View menu or the boxes next to Search, on the right top of iTunes.
and the column next to it with a number in it that I have absolutely no idea what it's for. I want those two columns OUT.
In List view, you can turn off every column (in menu View > View options) except track name.

  • How do I get rid of the new "Album by Artist" column in iTunes 10?

Just installed iTunes 10. It has added an obnoxious column, "album by artist" in my music listings that I want to delete. I went view>view options. The album artist box is not checked, so how do I get rid of this column?

Try clicking on the tab itself. Unless it's changed in version 10, that tab toggles from Album to Album by Artist to Album by Year. If you don't want the album column, go to view and turn it off.

  • ITunes 10's Album by Artist column not good for assorted artist albums

If a given album has selections done by different groups or artists, iTunes will fragment the album and create as many little groups for it as there are different performers on the album. This feature became a big problem for me with an album of big band music with presumed many different groups represented that I have and had put onto iTunes. For a few of the selections, I was able to identify the band leader (the album came from an analogue medium, a reel-to-reel tape, that had no titles or artists information) and had these names entered into iTunes. With the old iTunes version, the album would be shown in one place with all the selections in order and with a few of them showing an artist name.
I found that some of the music files were misnamed and I wanted to add names to another group of generic file names. All these changes caused iTunes to report it couldn't find the songs and needed my help to locate them again. No trouble here, as I would expect nothing less and was familiar with this from other similar cases. What was an unpleasant surprise was that the selections with identified band leaders separated off from the anonymous group and from one another, based just on the names of these band leaders. I had to slowly scan through close to 1900 songs to find the all of the stray pieces of the album.
If I didn't find all the album titles with new file names, the files would had quietly remained not found and probably would have been deleted from the iPod. ITunes doesn't alert to unfound files at startup; one has to click each name for Get Info in order to get the dialogue for locating the file again.
Even if iTunes wouldn't keep all the pieces together (and I understand why it didn't), if the Next and Previous functions would allow me to step through all the tracks of such an album, I could get by, but this is not so either. Next and Previous navigate just to the physically adjacent songs, not the logical neighbors.

I'm not sure where you were putting in the band leader information - my guess is you used Album Artist instead of just plain Artist - but I think I answered this in your other post.

Yes, this is a pain. iTunes used to show these unfound tracks more readily. THere is a script that has been around or years that will find them, though. It's "FindDeadTracks" from this page:

That all depends on what column you've sorted your tracks by. I usually sort my library by Date Added, with new tracks at the top. A new CD I've imported would be at the top and all the tracks from it together. Very easy.
Other sort columns could also keep the tracks together so you could use Previous/Next.

  • Hi! Album by Artist Question?

When I transfered music from my old computer to my new one using Home Share I noticed that the first column to show up was the album by artist column. Is there anyway to fix this and restore the original order of my outlook beginning with the name and so forth? thanks

Clicking on the heading for the Album column cycles between three views *Album, Album by Artist & Album by Year*. Whichever value is displayed in the heading the field value is simply Album.
While iTunes doesn't give the user any facilites for multi-layered sorting some of the columns do not simply order things by the value of the single field they represent. Album by Artist is more properly *Album by Album Artist* and in pseudo-SQL it would go something like this.
SELECT * FROM Selection ORDER BY Sort Album Artist, Album, Disc #(Empties Last), Track #(Empties Last)
Where there is no Sort Album Artist value it is infered from the first non-empty value of Album Artist, Sort Artist or Artist. Where there is no Sort Album it is infered from Album.

  • Album by Artist Sort Column

If you are trying to sort using the ALBUM column, and it appears as
ALBUM BY ARTIST, which mine did, you will notice that compilation
albums will scatter throughout the column. The album will not be
grouped as it should be like a normal album.
here's a little nested egg i came across tonight to help.
click on the column title, where it says, ALBUM BY ARTIST (it may
read differently per user) and you'll notice the title and sort parameters
change to ALBUM BY YEAR and just plain ol' ALBUM.
worked for me and i hope it helps someone else.

Thank you Fizzlestix for posting your discovery about changing the type of sorting done in the Album column! One of the first things I noticed about v. 7 was a different column heading in my music Library ('Album by Year') and I could not get the thing to sort albums in any way that was meaningful to me. (The column header remained 'Album' in all of my playlists and continued to sort alpha order which is all that I need.) A long search in the iTunes Help didn't turn up anything helpful (not unusual).
I should have turned to this discussion forum sooner.
I have other questions now that I will soon be posting here.
    Thanks again.

  • View doesn't have number column  Will not Show Album only Album by Artist/Year

Not sure what happened.  The View in my main music Libary changed while loading many CD's into I-Tunes.  The 1st column with the numbers is no longer there. When I add Album to the View, Album by Artist/Year appears instead of Album.  I can't get the sorts I had earlier.  If I go the playlists below, the columns all appear correctly.   I've tried eerything in the View dropdown and can't correct it.  Please help.

ok everyone, found the answer last night,  You just need to click thru the main menu header and there are choices to personalize your view.  Happy Saturday!  [:>  This is a great forum and was lucky enough to find the answer on this site shortly after I signed on for the first time......

  • Album art in the Artist column is missing

I have an album art problem. For one artist in my library, Foo Fighters, the album art is missing in the left artist column. I have deleted and reinstalled album art for each and every album as well as delete and reinstall all albums/sings. Nothing helps. BUT, when choose all songs and change the Album Artist Name to "Foo Fighters#" it shows. But when I change it back again its gone. What is going on and how can I fix it?

    Hi there mwetterstrand,
It looks like the Album art doesnt seem to show in the Artist column as expected. I would use these steps on the missing artwork in the Artists column:
Add artwork to songs and other items
Retrieve album artwork from the iTunes Store for songs in your library: Control-click the songs and choose Get Album Artwork.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Sorting music by "Album by Artist / Year" on iPod touch (3rd gen.)

    Hello there,
In my music library, I have plenty of discographies per artist (eg. Bob Dylan's, Coldplay's etc...), and am finding a bit of a pain to sort it the way I want it on my iPod.
I've synced my new iPad with iTunes and copied all the music across, and when I look through the music on the iPad and select an artist, each of their albums are ordered by the year they were released in (and this happened automatically). I find this a much better way of sorting music to how I did it previously (i.e. each album ordered alphabetically).
Now, my question: How the heck do I get my iPod touch to do this?
On iTunes, I figured out you can sort the iTunes library in this way by selecting an artist in grid view, then clicking "Album by Title" above the column with album artwork and changing it to "Album by Artist / Year", however this only works for that specific artist's albums - to get your iTunes library to sort all albums this way you seemingly have to do this for each artist. Is there any way to make my whole library sort music this way without having to do that?
Essentially, how can I get my iPod to sort music the way my iPad does?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
As far as I can see, you can't sort the order of music on the iPod Touch. It is always sorted alphabetically.
Maybe you can suggest that as a feature to Apple.

  • Sort order when using "Album by Artist/Year" album list view

In iTunes 10, I seem to have lost the sorting I've been using for the past 5 years at least. I use the "Album List" view, and have the album artwork showing to the left of the songs. I see the new "Album by Artist/Year" sort option in the album artwork column, and that is how I would like it to sort. However, now the album are arranged by artist, and within the artist by the year they were released as tagged in the info for each song. I want the newest albums at the top, and I cannot figure out how to make it sort that way. What do I need to do? Basically I want it in descending order by release date, but still sorted by album.

    dannycorker wrote:
It appears they are, although I refuse to believe this is the accepted behaviour - has no one else complained about this?
It could simply be a weakness is the way this was all designed. If you look at the information Gracenote uses, it's not unusual for all tracks on a 60's compilation album to be incorrectly listed as the same year, often the year the compilation was released. The same thing tends to happen with re-issued albums. That's down to whoever inputs the information into Gracenote for that album, often a bored record company employee.
First of all, you could try changing the year for each documentary to the year the album was produced and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then you have to decide how to handle it.
    Accept it as it is.
Change the year for the documentary to the same year as the album and simply kid yourself that it's the correct year. (I'm not being flippant, but if the documentary is all footage from album release year, then "technically", the doumentary is from that 60's year.)
Leave the year of the documentary track blank, but put the year (2010) into the track's "Comments" field instead.
Propose a workable solution to Apple via Apple Feedback. (I am being a bit flippant now. Sorry, but you'll be in for a long wait before anything might change.)
Get Gracenote to change their text fields, get the people who input the information into Gracenote to do so correctly and then get Apple to change iTunes to recognise those changes. (Now I am being very flippant. Good luck with this one!) Oh! And hope Apple never decide to change from Gracenote to someone else!
Number 2 or 3 are probably your best bet.

  • How do i get rid of Album by Artist

Down the left hand side of iTunes music list there is a column that is labled "Album by Artist."  It is not too bad to if you have songs sorted by Album but if you sort by song name you get all these large blocks on the left and the list is long and hard to read.  I haven't had this column before and I can't find how to delete it.

Try clicking on the tab itself. Unless it's changed in version 10, that tab toggles from Album to Album by Artist to Album by Year. If you don't want the album column, go to view and turn it off.

  • Organizing Album by Artist/Year When Multiple Albums a Year

I'm so OCD I want to organize my albums chronologically by year, but if a band has multiple albums in one year, it organizes them alphabetically. Is there a way I can specify the actual date or at least month, so my albums will properly be in order?

    Tom,
When you click on the left side of the column head (on the title), it cycles between Album, Album by Artist, Album by Year.
When you click on the right side of the column head (over the arrow) it toggles between Ascending/Descending (Up/Down arrow).
    Multipass.

  • How to change "Album By Artist" to just "Album"?

Yeah so im kind of late for this but this is driving me crazy. You know how before iTunes 10 & 11 there was a column called "Album" which sorted all your music by the Album Title? Now it shows "Album by Artist" which I don't want. I checked "Album" under the view settings but when i click that it shows Album by artist NOT Album.
    How it is currently:
    ex.
*song name* *artist* *album by artist*
How i want it to be:
    ex.
    *song name* *artist* *album*
I want it when i click to sort my music by album it sorts it by the albums artists name and then the album name not the albums name.
    Am I making sense?

Oh. My. God. Was it really that simple? I feel dumb..... Thank you Jim! You are a life saver, you know that?
