Album by Year in Grid View

Ok, I know that clicking on the 'Album' column you can cycle through various sort options to get to 'Album by Year', but after quitting and restarting iTunes, it forgets that I wanted to sort by album year and reverts to sorting by track number!
I'm using 8.2.1 by the way, in grid view, grouped by Artists. I want to be able to click on an artist and see their albums sorted by year.
Anyone else having this problem?

When you click on the Album button in grid view, hold down the control key to get the other options.

  • Songs out of order and split into several "albums". Only in Grid view upon clicking on album.

Ok this is getting ridiculous! Until two days ago, all was well in my itunes universe. Not so anymore. All tracks on ALL albums are all jumbled, but only when I use Grid view. List view, OK, as are all the others. All the sorting info seems to check out and nothing seems amiss. When I have 10 songs shy of 7000, going album-by-album through the whole library doesn't quite seem viable as an option. Could there be a corrupted plist or preference file somewhere I could trash? I downloaded the latest version, then spent 5 hours restoring Itunes from my last backup and that was before the problem occurred. What gives? I've tried everything I've been able to find on the internet so far and nothing has worked. I've yet to attempt a reinstall as I'm afraid this bother is hiding somewhere in a file that wouldn't be touched by a reinstall. And I'm not willing to live with it as this is my preferred way of interacting with itunes. I have better things to do with my day off than scour the web for a solution that never should have happened in the first place. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time in advance.

Nevermind, somehow it's magically back in order.

  • Problem with the List/Album List/Cover Flow/Grid view buttons

Is anyone else having this problem?
I have each playlist/media in different views. I have my music in List view, my podcasts, TV shows, and certain playlists in Album List view, and my movies and music videos in grid view. But now, any view that I select makes it the same for each playlist/media and I have to manually change it everytime I go to one of those lists. I figure this is a glitch with 10.5.3. Anyone else experiencing this?

    I'm also having that problem.
It seemed to happen after iTunes 10.5 updates.
I like my music in album list view and my apps in grid form.  However, now it's just one view for all lists.  Any fixes for this or is this a bug that needs to be ironed out by Apple?

  • Album art shown in grid view

In the new grid view which shows the album art for artists, is there a way to set the image shown for the artist, like you press space to choose the picture shown in iPhoto?
It's annoying at the moment becasue I use it in artist mode but some artists with more than one album show the image for a compilation that they are on rather than one of their albums. Eg, under Coldplay, the artwork shown is a Now album, rather than say Viva la vida. Can I change the album shown as the main image?
    Thanks

Ok, I've been playing around with iTunes 8 and have found the answer myself. If when in Grid view with more than the one album for the artist, show the album art required and right click and choose Set Default Album Artwork and it will change it to this. Alternatively choose Get Info whilst on the grid view and it will allow you to paste an artwork in here which it will use as a default.
Hope this helps anyone else wanting to do a similar thing!

  • Playing a playlist with multiple albums in Grid View in iTunes 8

    Hi All,
Here is a situation I came across, that was quite unexpected compared to the behaviour in iTunes 7.
Suppose I have a playlist with multiple artists/albums. I have this playlist in Grid View. I choose this playlist from the left side navigation tree and press the play button. This playlist is set to shuffle by songs. I expect it to play a song and jump to the next song. iTunes 8 would just keep playing the same songs in the first album listed in the Grid View and would not jump to any other.
    http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4726/itunes20080910191124oh2.jpg
In this screenshot above, it will keep the songs in "The Very Best Of". If I press Ctrl+L (show now playing) then it would show only the songs in this album. This quite explains why it doesn't play other songs.
To explain a bit more on what's happening:
If I go to List View the song now playing does not have the Now Playing icon:
    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1113/itunes20080910191500vf3.jpg
Notice it is playing "Opa Opa" but in the List View, it doesn't show it.
This is because in Grid View if you play a song from the playlist, it has its own "virtual playlist"

    Why is this the case?
I hope you guys understood what I was trying to explain.

turingtest2: I had already done exactly what you described in the *"Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist"* section of your article. But what I hadn't done was the advice you gave as the last sentence in this section...*"In addition if you change the Compilation status of tracks they may be temporarily treated as tracks from an Unknown Album, again things should resolve themselves if you close and reopen iTunes".* As soon as I closed and restarted iTunes, the Unknown Album with five tracks disappeared and the tracks were again displayed with the correct album.
Your article is a great read, even for people who understand iTunes...there is a lot of helpful advice there to have bookmarked just in case any of the other problems you address are ever encountered. Thanks for taking the time to compile it and share it iTunes users.

  • There is more to Grid View than you think

As is typical of new software versions, cool features are rarely fully discussed in press releases. Macworld has just posted and article about some [neat Grid View sorting|http://www.macworld.com/article/135566/2008/09/gridviewoptions.html] features that allow you to control how content is displayed in each grid view.
For instance in the Albums Grid View I selected to sort by the artist and then the year in ascending order then grouped the albums. Now when I switch to the Albums section of the Grid View I see album covers grouped by the artist and ordered within the group by release date.
    Experiment and enjoy.

    Thanks for the tip.

  • Rounded Corners in Grid View

Seriously someone please tell me how to get rid of these rounded corners in grid view. I can handle a subtle curve on the corners but these are 32x32 pixel curves on every corners. Any bigger and I'll be browsing album artwork circles in grid view. The white background is annoying enough but this is about to make me ditch the program.

What I propose is the bottom of each thumbnail. Because the size of the thumbnail is variable mixed, possibly, with a 3 or 4 line word wrap this space would be more then enough for many users. Alternately, a new grid view with one photo on the left side coupled with extensive metadata on the right would enable quick views of keywords/metadata. Other programs such as acdsee pro have implemented similar functionality which I have found extremely valuable. The ability, at quick glance, to see how photos have been tag will greatly increase the efficiency of tagging. I agree that many users may find the function limiting, but they dont have to use it.

    wow.
well i just found the solution to my problem. Well i found the cause, not a solution really. All this problem seems related to the fact that i had my albums sorted by Ratings. If i sort them back by artist, it's all good!!
This is really frustrating, come on, this isn't suppose to pass Q.A. tests.
Even more, if i sort them in descending order instead of ascending, it works, but i got my favorite albums on the bottom.. i guess it's a work around.
Now also.. why did they put ratings but no options to filter by ratings? and where are Smart Playlists? Go Itunes, be more Iphoto! :P

  • Slow-to-load album covers in Grid View

I've encountered a problem for a while that I thought I might bring up...
Whenever I start iTunes, it defaults to Grid View, the only view I use when browsing iTunes. Now, I'm unsure if iTunes caches album art or not, but every time I boot it up and scroll down, all of my albums appear artless for half a second before slowly applying the album art. This makes scrolling down incredibly slow and clunky.
Once I fully scroll down, I can scroll smoothly all I want, but if I close iTunes, everything is clunky again. Any tips? Does iTunes not cache album art?

iTunes will need to load all of your artwork when using cover flow and grid view. There IS a cache folder in the Album Artwork folder of iTunes, but i don't know how effective that is.
However, if you are running a version earlier than 9.2, iTunes 9.2 runs cover flow and grid view A LOT faster than previous versions, since what it does is create thumbnail versions of your images for those views only, making those views operate a heck of a lot quicker.
I know 9.2 still has some bugs and some people may advise against it, but if you really want to see a boost of performance with grid view I'd recommend updating if you haven't already. Besides, for any bugs there, Apple will probably release fixes for them shortly.

  • Albums split up in new grid view on itunes 8

when browsing my albums in the new grid tab of itunes, some of my albums are split up into their own separate album. for example the "august rush" album i purchased from itunes is split into twelve different albums. how do i combine those songs so all the songs are in one album slot?
i have already changed the "sort album by" to "title" in the "view" tab.
any suggestions and i would really appreciate it

    *Grouping tracks into albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your library.
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover, append different numbers of spaces for each different album or set different values for the Sort Album.
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
Sadly the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums which causes problems when some tracks list guest artists. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate this is information about the track rather than part of the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading prepositions (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track until I reach disc 1.
With classical music you also need to be wary of alternative representations of artist/composers names. The menus will work best if for each composer you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard performer details or place these into the Description field. (I’d use Comments but iTunes has a habit of writing long hex strings into it for no readily apparent reason).

  • ITunes sorting albums in grid view

In the grid view, my library lists albums multiple times if there are various artists on the same album. I have tried to reset my view options (Sort Albums, By Title) but cannot "uncheck" the By Artist option. I am very irritated and at my wits end! Does anyone have a solution for this?

  • How to hide albums names in Grid View

Some albums names are too long, like "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb". In small screens, like MacBook, is a mess to use Grid View because all long names comes with a cut and "…".
Can I just hide the albums names and artists names? Would be great if I could have just the covers without the characters soap.

    Woohoo!
I'm a little drunk right now, it being saturday night, but giving this a cursory and immediate look-over,
it appears to me that this is exactly what I wanted!
And also, it seems kind of basic and stupid of me that I have missed it. It seems kind of foolish of me, not fully exploring the "view" menu.
Of course I explored it a bit, but I did not think that the column browser would contain what I needed / wanted.
I kind of wrongly assumed that all views were on the GUI, but now that I think about it, that makes no sense. The GUI never shows everything in any app.....
    Thanks a million!
Until further notice, I think that's just what I was after, as well as the other answers contained in your previous posts.
    Thanks again Steve!
I appreciate your answers. Really accurate.

  • Grid View  - Weird album behavior

    Hi,
whenever i try to play an album throught the Grid View using the "play album" or "play" button (on album rollover), it plays the first song and stops.
Actually i realised that if i go inside the album(double-click), the album is sorted by song order, but inverted (last top). Even if i put it back to normal song order sorting, it oftens mess up and stop at the end of fist song. Then sometimes if i try another song ( say 3rd one ), it will skip to the previous (2nd). Like if it didn't understood my resorting.
Last, even if i put it back to standard song order sorting, go out to grid view and "play album" from there it does it again, inverting the sorting.
Looks like Grid View is acting strange.
I'm starting to think that's because i imported my library from my old Mac wich had an old Itunes.
    any help?

  • How do I view my albums by year on my iPod Touch

Hi, I would like my albums to be displayed in chronological order on my iPod.
It is very annoying seeing all your albums in alphabetical order for large discographies like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, or Van Morrison for example.
All my albums have "Year" tags recognised by iTunes so "Album by Year" works perfectly, but how do I do this on my iPod?
For example, my Beatles albums are displayed like this:
    Abbey Road
    A Hard Day's Night
    Beatles For Sale
    etc.
When infact, they should be like this:
    Please Please Me (released 1963)
    With The Beatles (released 1963)
    A Hard Day's Night (released 1964)
    etc.
I think Apple's software & products are quite innovative, so surely there must be a simple way to do this!
On another note - how do you just VIEW the year of an album on your iPod? I can't seem to find it!
    Many thanks
    Tom

    Tom -
You could probably do something like this by screwing around in iTunes a bit. I know in previous versions if you held the alt button and clicked the "create new playlist" button you would get a bunch of options for setting up dynamically generated playlists.
So, just an idea, you could set one up to organize by year...
