Album goes black, uggrade to 6.06, fear of corruption -

Several of my albums went black/empty that had had photos. These same photos disappeared from the library as well. I am concerned there is something corrupt in the application. I did find most of them in "my pictures" or in the canon application that came with the camera.
I just bought iPhoto6 and upgraded to 6.06. I am wondering if I should export all of the photos, or the library and re-install the new software and keep the old photos separate from this new upgrade - with an entirely new library???
I have deleted the preferences and also rebuilt the thumbnails as well as repaired permissions already.

You can't trash those as they are hardwired into the iPhoto application. If you add any image files with created dates in those years they will show up when you click on them. Do not uncheck them as that will hide any photos that may fall in those years.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Screen Goes Black and Hangs when browsing by Artist, Album, Song, etc.

I'm having a fairly huge issue with Front Row:
I can play video files (although their is a moment of hangtime between selecting a video and the video actually playing) and music files (if I choose the "Shuffle Songs" option), however, when I choose to browse my music by artists, albums, songs, genres, etc. my screen goes black and stays that way until I hit CMD+Q over and over until it finally quits. Furthermore, when I do play music via "Shuffle Songs" and quit out of Front Row, the music continues to play in the background and cannot be stopped, paused, etc.
Is there anyone out there who can help me fix this? I love Front Row and use it all the time and it would be a shame not to be able to anymore..
    Thanks in advance,
    Corey

I have a similar problem. When browsing music the screen goes to black or just freezes on whatever was beeing displayed for maybe 30 seconds to a minute before continuing. It happens quite often. I am running the latest version of Front Row on a brand new Mac Mini. I have a very large iTunes music folder (about 830 gigabytes of uncompressed AIFF files) running on an external FW800 drive. I tried repairing permissions and a number of Front Row and a few iTunes files appear in the list. However, when I run repair permissions again, the same files are still listed so obviously if they need to be repaired, it's not happening. I tried repairing the volume (no problems found) and repairing permissions from the Install disc but the result was identical.

  • My iPhoto goes black when I try to open a photo

I am running OS 10.7.5  and iPhoto 11 9.4.3  on an iMac. Yesterday I uploaded 620 photos into iPhoto. They worked perfectly and I was able to go through all of them after uploading. I did not close iPhoto last night but minimized it to the dock. Today when I tried to open a photo from the thumbnail, the screen went black. All my albums do the same thing. The first image clicked on comes up on the screen. Then it goes black and then nothing I do will bring up another image.
I restarted iPhoto but that did not help.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When using coverflow screen goes black

Having installed 7.1.1.5 of itunes I now find that my computer crashes (with the screen first going black) when i flick through more than a couple of album covers. Have not had this problem before on my pc, is this something that can be fixed?
      Windows XP

The only thing I can suggest is that you check that you have the latest DirectX
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx
    And drivers:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300252
There is an Apple article on coverflow but it doesn't really adddress your problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304402
When you say your computer crashes do you mean you get the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). If so post the error numbers and the names of any files mentioned.
If you don't see the error message you can do the follwing:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Motion goes black

    Hi all,
This is my first time in here. I have a problem with Motion 3. When i fire up the app. After the Motion3 logo goes away the whole screen goes black and i cant do anything with it. I have to go up to the menu bar and quit the application. I was in the motion preferences earlier in the day and may have changed something i shouldn't have, i guess. I have yet to use this App. I havent been able to find the Motion content library within the App. I was in the preferencs, i guess i really screwed it up now. Is there an easy fix to this? Can i just reinstall Motion? I am knee deep in a big project in Final Cut pro, and was afraid to start deleting Apps within Final Cut Studio 2 in fear of losing something in FCP. Can someone give me some advice on how to fix Motion? I need to add smoke to a shot in My Final Cut project.
    Thanks everyone, Steve

  • Ipod displays the album art BLACK

I've got a 80GB ipod video 5th generation, and some songs of some albums appear black... but on the pc they are just fine.... what the **** is going on?
All my songs have the correct art on them... but some appear as a black box on the ipod. HEEEEEEEEEEEELP

i have the same problem for ages since itunes 7.2 and 7.3 arrived i guess, but no techy apple guy can give an explanation or fix this bug even on itunes 7.4.
when your artwork is on itunes it's fine, by copying it to your ipod will get the exact copy at first. but when you edit the artwork direct on your ipod, say maybe you changed the artwork, it will display black after disconnecting.
now before getting into trouble and taking hours of restoring your ipod, you may simply delete that file from your ipod and drag a new copy from itunes library. with this you'll see the artwork perfectly.
on a last note i also find annoying that you can no longer customize what fields you can view (rating, last played, date added, etc.) on your ipod settings when you plug it into itunes. the settings are at default everytime you connect your ipod.
i hope this helps. seems apple is not listening to our little concerns which we all find annoying.

  • Screen goes black when hooking up to TV via mini-DVI to video adapter...

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded my PB12" to 10.5.x (now running 10.5.5, but this issue has been there since upgrading to 10.5.1), when I hook up the mini-DVI to video adapter (different adapter than for hooking up to an external display as the mini-DVI to video adapter has composite and sVideo out) to my TV, the PB screen goes black. It's set up to mirror the PB on the TV, and the PB continues to run, picture works on the TV, but I loose picture on the PB. Only way to get it back is to reboot the PB (with the mini-DVI to video adapter unplugged). So, basically, if I try and use the mini-DVI to video adapter, I loose picture on the PB. This never happened under 10.4.x — only since upgrading to 10.5.x.
Anyone have this issue? Know of a fix?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

If you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI.

  • Cinema display goes black upon resolution change in Windows XP

    Greetings
Earlier today, I updated my ATI X1600 Radeon to the latest Windows Catalyst drivers and to the Catalyst Control Center from ATI. Even since, whenever a Windows application (games, in this case) tries to change the resolution on my external Apple Cinema Display (designated as the main monitor in the ATI Catalyst Control Center, with the MacBook Pro display disabled), the display goes black, and the monitor power lamp starts to flash.
If I unplug the external Cinema Display from my MacBook Pro, my MacBook Pro display activates, and displays whatever it is I was trying to launch, so the problems is somehow related to the Cinema Display, even if the new drivers are causing it.
This happens regardless of my Catalyst Control Center settings, such as scaling the lower resolution to fit the screen, or keeping it the original size, with black borders around. The problem does not occur when I launch games using 1600 x 1024, the Cinema Display's native resolution.
Any ideas what might be causing it, and how to resolve it?

Update on my situation: when I tried to change the resolution manually in Windows, I encountered the same problem. Now, whenever I connect the Cinema Display to my MacBook Pro, the same thing occurs: the screen goes black, and the power lamp starts flashing, even though I've changed back to 1600 x 1024.

  • Screen goes black / fine in safe mode

My g4 has original 64mb agp card.
when i boot it looks ok just before the mac os screen then it goes black
if i boot in safe mode , everything appears ok , but there is some interference lines on the screen(can change res etc. )
    boots ok in single user.
graphics card has been reseated.. i think it's that , any other ideas before i splash some cash on a new one.
at the same time a pci ethernet card appears to have died. with it installed the mac won't boot just helicopter take off mega fan spinning.
we had an electrical storm , could this have done something nasty?
i have tried pci cards in all slots and they seem ok... i'm worried the agp is stuffed, just don't get why it displays in safe mode, but not normal..
    thanks for any help x

    Opps-
I wasn't asking...I was providing a link to an article telling you what Safe Mode is and does as per your question "what do they do different in safe mode to normal boot... so odd ?" in your reply post to my first.
Click on the blue text "What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?" and you can read for yourself what it does, and why I am suggesting that it could be a problem with Startup items.
I know what, why and how...

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro crash - screen goes black

There is a major problem with the mid 2010 Mac Book Pro's and Lion.  I suspect that it is related to the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB video card and perhaps the i7 processor.  The crashes are random and most often occur after a mouse click then the screen suddenly goes black and a restart is forced.  There is a thread on MacRumors that describes many others with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1182104
The crash occurs less frequently when the power and external monitors are connected.  When the MBP is unteathered it crashes every 20 minutes.  I am really surprised and disappointed that a bug this severe made it through final testing. Looking forward to 10.7.1.
    Scott

im so glad im not the only one with this problem. at least i know its not because some careless things i unconciously did that makes my mac gone berzerg like this.
i also encounter the exact same problem with all of you. problems started a month ago. at first it was just once in a while then it became a frequent thing especially when my battery left with 20-30%. then after i plugged in the magsafe, its okay. lately, nothing safes the mac from crashing, particularly when im running adobe and/or autocad. i thought it was software problems so i backed up my files, performed erase and install snow leopard then made an even bigger mistake by upgrading to lion. after finish upgrading, the crashings got even more often. every starting up, after i got a glimpse of login in, pufffttt, screen goes black but keyboard still on. googled it up and say reseting smc will do the trick. eeekkkk nothing! then resetting the pram. worked okay for quite some times then puufffttt, crash! ask a question on yahoo answers and got a help from lovely person to install gfsxcard-something and told to opt for integrated only. worked fine for 2 days and still went back to crashing. opened up the mac, testing each rams, reshuffling em, still got nothing. the only thing that enables me to do my work with this Majestic mac is resetting pram everytime i turn it on.
since im living in singapore (bought this mac june'09 in melbourne, australia), there is no genius bar to be found, running a diagnostic only at any apple service cost me 120 bucks and if i have to change the logicboard, its gonna cost me ard 1000++ dollas since i dont have any applecare and my warranty expired 4mnths ago. so, i might be killing myself soon! yauuzaaaa

  • After shutdown I have to log in twice.  The first time it starts to load, then goes black, then gives me login page again.  Do you think I have a virus?  Or is this Yosemite bug?

Just updated to Yosemite on my MBP.  After shutdown now when I login, it starts the process (the bar starts to move), then the screen goes black, then it asks me to login again and this time it is a successful startup.  Is this a Yosemite bug or do I have a virus?  I also have some funny tiling on the screen at youtube and some other websites.  Another bug?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacBook 13.3" (A1181), 2.16 GHz, screen goes black once OS is loaded.

I have a MacBook 13 (model A1181, 2.16 GHz) that I bought from a friend.  Everything starts up fine, I get the chime, etc., until it loads the OS.  I have a brand new Apple hard drive; brand new Mac OS X Leopard disk; and have tried everything I can think of.  I have tried shining a light to see if the screen is just dim--no dice.  I have tried completely wiping the drive clean on my iMac and then reinstalling.  It gets all the way through the install, then the screen goes black when I'm trying to set my information up.  The screen stays up if it's installing the OS, and also if I have the hard drive disconnected on the logic board.  As soon as I load the OS, it goes black.  The rest of the machine is still running.  I have a spare logic board, so I put that in and I get the same problem.  What am I missing?  Any help would be appreciated.  It may be useful to know that I am a computer repair technician (I do component repairs at a motherboard/logic board level).  However, I believe all the hardware to be working.  I think it may be a firmware issue, but I can't get it to keep a screen long enough to do any software updates.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I actually considered that and replaced the inverter, as I couldn't find the cord to external display, but also to no avail.  Same thing happened.

  • Screen goes black on last step of Win7 installation

Created Windows partition via Mac side just fine, then inserted Win7 installation disc, restarts and goes most of the installation process, but then goes black.
Once we start it up again, it gives us the option of starting up in a few versions of "safe mode", or to "run windows normally". When we choose any of the safe modes, it says that we can't finish the installation in a safe mode. When we choose to run windows normally, the screen just goes black again (indefinitely, though the computer still seems to be on).
If anyone has fixed/understood this problem, please HELP!! Thanks!!!

Hmm so finally you cannot start up the notebook is it right?
It would be interesting to know if this helps:
    - Removed battery and ac adaptor
    - Press and hold power button do this for 30sec
    - Then connect both parts again.
    Does the notebook power up?
If this does not help well, you are in trouble I would assume its hardware related issue and in such case you need service help

  • Screen goes black randomly

    Hi everyone.
I have a very strange issue on 2 different PCs.
From time to time the screen goes completly black, and I have to wait about 2-3 seconds for it to restore the picture.
Both have NVIDIA video card, one PC has GF8900GT the second GF7200.
    Both PCs running GNOME
In both PCs the screen is connected via DVI port.
One PC has Arch installed for about 4 months the second has a 3 days old installation.
I also have a laptop with Arch (about 4 months) but I didn't expirience any issues there.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but it really annoys me.
I'll be very gratefull if someone points me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Screen goes black on late2009 imac

Hello, My Imac EMC 2374 Late 2009 27 inch Imac Screen went black and I need help diagnosing it.
    Information:
I have restarted numerous times (Including disconnecting the power cord and Pram starting).
I get a chime at start up. The White screen and Apple logo appear and the line that shows it's loading starts to fill. Then the logo and the line disappear with the screen remaining white for about 10 seconds. Then everything goes black.
I connected an external monitor. This time the screen remained on until my desk top with icons finally appeared on the imac (the external monitor, an HDMI TV, did light up blue (the color of my actual desk top) but the icons didn't appear on that screen) Then everything went black.
When I tried that again I couldn't get the Imac to start at all and only 1 led remained on.
I waited about 10 minutes to retry and this time it restarted with the desktop with icons appearing. Again after 10 seconds it went black.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
