Album list order in iTunes

Awhile ago (circa 2007) there was an upgrade to iTunes that reordered the "Album" list from numeric/alpha listing to a alpha/numeric list. For examples, albums used to be listed starting with those titles with numbers - "1", "5150", "90125", etc. - and now those albums appear at the end of the list. What is the reason why Apple changed this file order in the listing?

Who knows. I guess someone, JOBS perhaps, liked his listings a different way and so they changed it.

  • Album track order in iTunes

Hello, I have a problem with a few downloaded albums.
I had downloaded album tracks off the net into album folders in My Music. The tracks were numbered. After importing the albums (folders) into my iTunes library, & updating my iPod with those, I see that in both the iPod & iTunes the tracks are in the wrong order. They are however, in correct order in their folders (in MY Music).
Any ideas how I can remedy this?

Try this, I found that it works for me. Right click at the top of any column in your iTunes library and choose **Track Number** from the list. Click at the top of this new column to sort it and after that click on the Album column. If you like you can then click on Artist which is how I prefer mine ordered, it will continue to hold the track order as well. Afterwards anything you import should follow this arrangement Artist>Album>Track Number within Album (you can hide the track number column when you've done if you don't want it cluttering up the view)

  • How do I get back album list view in iTunes 11?

I want it to look like this
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-itunes/2010/09/new-album-list-view-option-in- itunes-10.html
But I can't seem to find a way now

This is what I want it to look like in EvilGnome's post. Is there a way?
Ignatia: Putting it on Songs tab then clicking on "Album" doesnt work as theres no resulting window that appears with album art and tracks after clicking on the Songs tab....its just a long list of track titles.
Basically i want the songs in text format but seperated by the album art to the left. like in EvilGnome's picture - not just a long list making it hard to figure out. Why Apple would even remove this option god knows....
Don't fix something that ain't broke.
Currently it looks like this using the songs tab in iTunes 11....no album art anymore
I want it to look like the pic below (pic from evilgnome's post and how i was using itunes previously):

  • How do you change the album sort order in itunes

It seems that Itunes sorts albums by Artist then Album... How can you change sort order to Album name only.

I've been playing with this and discovered it has to do with your personal ratings (ie stars) for albums and songs - seems iTunes now selects the highest rated album to use for the Artist icon. If you have no ratings it seems (but not always) to select the most recent album/song to use fo rthe display.
I've been able to get iTunes to use specific album artowk by rating both the album and all individual tracks as 5 star. You may need to restart iTunes for the changes to take effect.
But I'd be much happier just telling iTunes which image to use - like we used to be able to do. Yet another step backwards for iTunes 11 (one of many).

  • Album Sort Order in iTunes vs iPod

WIth the newer Versions of iTunes, albums are sorted in alphabetical order ignoring the word "The". (i.e. On iTunes the following albums would be in this order: Sub Songs, The Super Songs, Suzy Music where on my iPod, the following albums would be placed in this order: Sub Songs, Suzy Music, The Super Songs lumping all "The" titles amongst the Ts.) Does anyone know why this sort feature is not the same on iPod AND iTunes? Please advise.

Sorting has become a complete mess. Though, it's quite logical from Apple to sort albums by ignoring the because it makes searching for albums a lot easier since there are numerous albums (and artists) beginning with that word.
But I guess that an answer to your question can only be given by an Apple engineer who makes iPod software.

  • Albums listed differently in iTunes and on iPod

I like the way 7.3 has changed the ways albums are organized. The articles "A" and "The" are ignored in iTunes, and such. I want to know why iTunes lists albums this way, but the iPod still refuses to list my albums the way they are listed in iTunes. Any ideas?

You know what, you're right. Albums are not sorted properly on the iPod. I got mixed up with my previous post; my 4G iPod sorts artists, not albums correctly. iTunes has custom sort fields as of Version 7. You can enable them by adjusting the columns displayed (View -> View Options). "The" and now "A" (as of 7.3) are automatically adjusted by iTunes. These should appear sorted on the iPod but they don't on mine and apparently on your 5.5G iPod either.
I use the custom sort fields mainly to sort artists by Last Name, First Name. That's a bummer that the new iPods don't support these fields yet. I guess I will be waiting for the touchscreen, iPhone-like iPod after all.

  • Play albums in order within itunes

Overnight our itunes has decided to play one track from an album and then move to an artist beginning with the next letter in the alphabet instead of playing the next song on the album selected. We have not selected party shuffle or anything. Please can anyone advise as its driving us mad! Many thanks.

    1. Choices... Restore the iPod back to factory settings. If you've opted for manual syncing, just select everything on the iPod & delete. If you're auto-syncing (which I'd recommend), make any changes you want to in iTunes, then sync. All the changes will be updated to the iPod. If you make use of the functions to *Sync selected playlists* and *Sync checked tracks only* you can achieve fine control over what goes onto the iPod while ensuring that it's always updated with any tweaks you make to tag info.
    2. Yes... assuming you're not using shuffle.
    3. It should do... Very occasionaly I've had to uncheck, apply & recheck this option to fix gaps in gapless albums.
    4. It might just time out before the wireless connection responds. Try connecting to your web browser before inserting your CD.

  • Fix track order on itunes 11

Please please please can anybody help me sort out album track order in iTunes 11!?!  After I upgraded, the track order on hundreds of my albums became jumbled and there doesn't seem to be any rationale or pattern to this jumbling. As far as I can see, every album that is numbered 01, 02, 03 etc (as opposed to simply 1, 2, 3 etc) is jumbled. I've asked two individual iTunes support people for information and/or suggestions - one didnt respond; the other's response was that I should use the fee-based AppleCare system. Why in the name of all that's holy should I be referred to a paid service when it's Apple's own upgrades that has caused problems that previously didn't exist!?! Everything was fine on iTunes 10. After the most recent iPhone and iPad upgrade, Home Sharing doesn't work on those devices. And, apart from other aspects of iTunes 11, every time I now reduce to the dock, I have to Quit, wait a moment, then start iTunes all over again before the window will come back up for me. My faith in Apple is dwindling by the day ... Anyhow - any help with the jumbled track-order issue will be much appreciated, thanks.

This excellent article from turingtest may help you.

  • Sort order when using "Album by Artist/Year" album list view

In iTunes 10, I seem to have lost the sorting I've been using for the past 5 years at least. I use the "Album List" view, and have the album artwork showing to the left of the songs. I see the new "Album by Artist/Year" sort option in the album artwork column, and that is how I would like it to sort. However, now the album are arranged by artist, and within the artist by the year they were released as tagged in the info for each song. I want the newest albums at the top, and I cannot figure out how to make it sort that way. What do I need to do? Basically I want it in descending order by release date, but still sorted by album.

It appears they are, although I refuse to believe this is the accepted behaviour - has no one else complained about this?
It could simply be a weakness is the way this was all designed. If you look at the information Gracenote uses, it's not unusual for all tracks on a 60's compilation album to be incorrectly listed as the same year, often the year the compilation was released. The same thing tends to happen with re-issued albums. That's down to whoever inputs the information into Gracenote for that album, often a bored record company employee.
First of all, you could try changing the year for each documentary to the year the album was produced and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then you have to decide how to handle it.
    Accept it as it is.
Change the year for the documentary to the same year as the album and simply kid yourself that it's the correct year. (I'm not being flippant, but if the documentary is all footage from album release year, then "technically", the doumentary is from that 60's year.)
Leave the year of the documentary track blank, but put the year (2010) into the track's "Comments" field instead.
Propose a workable solution to Apple via Apple Feedback. (I am being a bit flippant now. Sorry, but you'll be in for a long wait before anything might change.)
Get Gracenote to change their text fields, get the people who input the information into Gracenote to do so correctly and then get Apple to change iTunes to recognise those changes. (Now I am being very flippant. Good luck with this one!) Oh! And hope Apple never decide to change from Gracenote to someone else!
Number 2 or 3 are probably your best bet.

  • How do I get Itunes to play an album in order if some of the songs are duets? For example, if I'm playing an album by "John Doe" and track

How do I get stupid Itunes to play an album in order if some of the songs are duets? For example, if I'm playing an album by "John Doe" and track #3 is a duet w/ "Jane Doe", it treats it as a separate album! What can I do

    Hi
    All my tracks are MP3.
In List View, I do not have an Album column I have an Album by Artist column.  If I click on this column the albums look right in the playlist on the screen but when I burn to the CD the tracks are not in one folder per album instead they seem to be in folders per Artist then Album, which as one of the albums is a compilation has created about 30 folders.
If I switch on the 'Sort by Album' column it burns the disc as I expected.

  • Albums listed in itunes

I don't know if this has been covered before but just wondering why itunes will always list an artists albums by alphabetical order instead of chronological order. Can this be done becausse i have tried to no avail.

    It's there, but it's a little tricky.
    * Activate the "Year" display in your iTunes listing (ctrl-j, checkmark next to year, maybe drag the column header to the left so you can see it easier)
    * Click the "Year" column header to sort by year.
If you are in a playlist covering a specific artist, then it will now show their albums in chronological order, then in album track order.
If you're in the Library view or a playlist with multiple artists, turn on Browse (ctrl-b) and select an artist. You'll see just that artist's tracks in Chronological order.

How can I get an album to play in order on Itunes?  The songs keep skipping all around to other albums that I did not want to listen to at that time?

It sounds like you might have the shuffle button at the bottom left of the iTunes (the button with the squiggly lines).
If that's not the case, then maybe you just need to sort your library by album by clicking the album tab at the top.
Is your music in a playlist, or are you trying to play it from the entire library?

Hi I followed instructions to copy/move iTunes music to a new PC. I can see albums listed in the library but SYNCH will not put any music on my new iPod.
It took three weeks to import my CDs on the old PC and I don't want to do it again!

Take a look here; it should help:
iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
Though it refers to items purchased from the iTunes Store, it applies to all your iTunes content. And if you happen to also own an iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have the tracks on some removable medium, you can mount that on your new computer and then just drag the content to the iTunes window. Make sure that the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced -> General preferences before you do. Alternatively, you can use the Add To Library command and select each track (or folder of tracks).
If you won't be using that Windows system once you move the content, don't forget to deauthorize the system from your iTunes Store account before you dispose of the computer.
    Regards.
