Album Picks are Driving Me Insane

Because I haven't upgraded from 3.2.4 or asked others for a workaround, I thought I post here before giving feedback.
I'm not sure when the application engineers decided that if stacked images are added to an album the stack pick should automatically become an album pick that must be manually removed even after choosing a new stack pick, but it wasn't always this way. Of that I'm sure.
This is driving me insane because I can't find a way to change the default, and I can't remove the album pick from multiple stacks simultaneously.
After I do the work to choose stack picks, I don't need the album to display a different image as the pick. In my workflow, this is a severe hinderance that costs me time and causes me to run the risk of overlooking acceptable images that I've already chosen to display as the pick. If I need to use the album pick feature, I can make that decision without any help from the application. The main thing that's kept me with Aperture is that I hate LR's DAM- especially the stack feature.
Please tell me that this has been addressed in 3.4. If this is the case, I might just find the time to update my huge library.

I am still trying to wrap my head around this. I think we may be seeing different behavior. When I create a new Album from a selection in a Project that includes Stacks, the Album Pick is set, but it is always the same as the Stack Pick. Yes? This, to me, is what I would expect. (From a computational point-of-view, there is no difference between designating the Stack Pick as the Album Pick, or not designating it, when the rule is that if there is no Album Pick designated, use the Stack Pick.)

Why? The Album pick is a separate, Album-specific designation. The Album pick is set to the Stack Pick when the Album is created, and remains so until you change one or the other. If it's the Album Pick you want to change or remove, change it or remove it. If you want to change the Stack Pick, you can do this either in the Project or in the Album. Agreed. There should be a way to "reset" Album Picks to the current Stack Picks.
I spent a good three hours going through and clearing album picks- that I didn't choose to create- one at a time, and I'm still coming across some that I missed.
How did you remove them?
Here is one method:
- Set the filter to "Stack picks only". With an Album selected, this will show Album Picks where they exist.
- Select the first Image with with an Album Pick badge showing, and click "Stacks➞Remove Album Pick". Go to next Stack ("Stacks➞Next Stack" or whatever keyboard shortcut you have assigned). At this point, you can either check for the Album Pick badge, and then remove the Album Pick, or you can click "Stacks" and see whether the menu choice is "Remove Album Pick" or "Set Album Pick". Repeat for each Stack until you get to the last Stack in the Album.
If you want to make the current Stack Picks the Album Picks, you can do this by creating a new Album from the Project. Mark all Images in the Album (I use Flags), select the Project, select the marked Images, and create a new Album. New Albums created from Projects set the Album Pick to be the Stack Pick. Now you have two Albums containing the same Images. One has all the old Album Picks. In the other, the left-most Image in each Stack is both the Stack Pick and the Album Pick. The result is that you have redesignated the Album Picks to be the Stack Picks.

Yes. I was trying to differentiate between issuing commands (from a menu or the toolbar or a keyboard shortcut) and effecting a result by moving Images. Afaik, Album-Pick-making must be done by command. Stack-Pick-making can be done by moving an Image to the left-most position in a Stack.
I'm still thinking through your workflow. That this presents a rock in your stream means something isn't right.

Publishing issues are driving me insane!

Ok, I've been using iWeb for about 12 months and I'm just getting so sick and tired of all the issues. Besides taking forever to upload new content i.e "publishing errors", I'm still struggling to understand why when I say "publish to .mac" after only adding one new blog entry that iWeb pretty much goes and uploads all the content again, even stuff from 12 months ago...It's driving me crazy.
Anyone got any ideas on how to speed this up?
Do we know if a new iWeb is being released soon?
Surely Apple can do better than this.
I love my iMac but iWeb/ilife is 99% of the reason I bought it and now it takes way too long to get a simple task done.
Are the new iMac intel users having the same problem? Is iWeb just too resource intensive for the G5?

i can give you the g4 perspective.
i almost never get any publishing errors. in fact i can't remember the last time i got one (although i know i have had at least one before). also "publish to mac" makes iweb "rebuild" the majority of the pages i have made, but it only uploads the pages i have changed/added. the rebuilding process does take a while though.
and on my g4 iweb is a resource hog... super resource hog. i'm expecting the new iweb that should come out with the new ilife when the new OS comes out (educated guess, nothing more) will be even more of a resource hog, but a lot of these little quirks and bugs that people are complaining about will be gone with a lot more features added in their place.

Fans on and off are driving me insane (MacBook Pro 13, Windows 7 x32)

I have had this problem for the past three weeks or so. When I am using Windows, the fan will spend half its time on, half off. It never used to be this way and I am not sure what could have pushed it over the edge - I have not installed any new programs or drivers. This also does not happen in Mac OS - and the system is equally warm under both operating systems. I keep reading on other forums that Apple has not done anything to remedy this situation - is that true?

At this point, if you try installing driver again, try using Driver Sweeper 2.0 from Guru3D to sweep and delete drivers in addition to uninstalling. That can clean things up and help, but I am at a loss and just from reading seems mixed results on MBP as to which ones to use and work or not.
So do browse through today's posts. Though I am perplexed MacRumors couldn't help - seems mixed and the Mac Pro section sometimes more help than Windows on Mac. Though the MacBook area you tried also?

Apple keyboards are driving me insane!!!!

Ok, I will try to keep this as simple as possible.
I have a bluetooth keyboard, had for over a year. One day letters ASDFGHJKL stop working for no reason. I try to reset and everything
else but still no luck.
I go out and buy a wired keyboard. the top row of keys (they keys like play and fastforward) don't do what they are supposed
to do, they do different things. So I read that I may need to update my computer as that can cause problems. So I go out and buy
Snow Leopard and update my computer.
Still no luck with either keyboard. Im serisouly losing it and want to throw my mac out of the window. Please help me. What can I do?

I don't quite understand your question regarding the wired KB. What do the function keys do (F keys) when they are depressed?

Maintaining album picks

I'd like to move the contents of two albums into a third. Unfortunately, when I do this, the album picks are lost. That is, the picks in the original two albums remain, but they do not transfer to the third album.
Does anyone know of a way to move the contents of an album while maintaining the album picks of the stacks which are moved?

I listen to primarily classical music
All of my music was very deliberatley titled by composers "Last Name, First Name" as the artist.
iTunes is changing it to the Album Artist. I have to go in and delete that information - AND THEN IT LATER REVERTS IT BACK!!!
Hours have been wasted and I am feeling so ticked.

If these are ripped mp3s then another possibility is multiple embedded tags. iTunes works best with a single ID3v2.3 tag. Some software creates both an ID3v1.0 and IDv2.x tag. With multiple tags it is not certain which iTunes reads or which it updates, and any device may choose differently. Once songs have the correct info. in iTunes you can use Convert ID3 Tags... None several times, then Convert ID3 Tags... v2.3. The process removes any embedded art but otherwise preserves the data that iTunes knows. You could use my script CreateFolderArt before and after to save and then restore the artwork.
In the long run you may be better off populating Album Artist properly with a copy of whatever is currently in Artist. My script CopyArtistToAlbumArtist can do this effectively.

Understanding Version Sets, Stacks, Picks, & Album Picks

Aperture's documentation is very good in most respects (adjustments being the major exception), but I found it very difficult to put my head around the whole version set / stacks / picks / album picks thingy.
While working on some images this morning, it all became clear.
1. Version Sets vs. Stacks
A Version Set is a single Master image with two or more Versions.
Version Sets have a light gray border around the contained images, and a single dark gray border around all those images in the Version Set.
A Stack is a collection of versions that do not use the same Master.
A Stack can contain single Versions or Version Sets (and Version Sets remain grouped within a Stack: you'll see a light gray border around the Version Sets and a dark gray border around everything in the Stack).
If you Stack two or more Version Sets, and then choose the Unstack command, all the Versions become separated--even if they share the same Master (i.e., UnStacking a Stack does not result in Version Sets, as you might expect--instead, it results in all individual Versions).
You can re-Stack these separated Versions that share the same Master, and you'll get a Version Set (light gray border surrounded by dark gray border) automatically (which is good, since there is no Create Version Set command).
From all these results, it appears that a Version Set is simply a Stack where each Version shares the same Master. It is different from other Stacks in that these Versions have a common light gray border.
2. Picks vs. Album Picks
Create an Album and add two separate images (i.e., two Versions with different Masters). Call it Album1.
Duplicate the Album. Call it Album2.
In Album1, create 3 different cropped versions of image1 (so you can tell the Versions apart). Likewise, create 2 different cropped versions of image2. You should now have 2 Version Sets in each album.
To help keep track of which Version is the pick, press 'T' to turn on image overlays so you can see the Version Title when you pause your mouse over an image.
Click on the number in the top left corner of each Version set to condense them. Notice that the left-most image (the Pick) is the image you se in the condensed Version Set. The same image will appear in Album1 and Album2.
Open the Version Set again, and click on the right-most image, then click the Pick button on the top toolbar (not the Album Pick button; the Pick button). Notice the rightmost image physically moves to the leftmost position. Close the Version Set and notice that this Version is now the one that displays when the Version Set is condensed.
Go into Album2 and condense the Version Set there, too. Notice that the same Version as in Album1 is the Pick. That's because we have not selected an Album Pick yet. The default Pick is the Pick for all albums until you pick an Album Pick for one or more albums.
While in Album2, open the first Version Set and select the right-most image in the Version Set. Now click the Set Album Pick button on the top toolbar. Notice no images move this time (compare that to clicking the Pick button on the toolbar). Instead, a black checkmark in a gray circle appears over the image. This means this Version is the Album Pick. Collapse this Version Set in Album2, and notice that the Album Pick image is what shows in the condensed Version Set. Now go back to Album1, and you'll notice there is no checkmark on any images. Collapse the first Version Set, and you'll see the left-most image (the default Pick) is the image that shows up on the collapsed Version Set. If you wanted to, you could open up the Version Set, select the middle image and click the Set Album Pick button, and the middle image would represent the Version Set in Album1, while the 3rd image would represent the Version Set in Album2. Version Sets can have no Album Picks, in which case the default Pick (the leftmost image) is what is selected for a collapsed Version Set.
OK, let's have some real fun now! Select the first Version Set, then command-click on the second Version Set to select both Version Sets. Now right-click (or control-click) on one of the images and select Stack. Both Version Sets should be combined into a single Stack, but you should still be able to see the light gray border around the two Version Sets within the Stack.
Click outside the Stack to deselect all the Versions. Now click on the left-most Version in the right-most Version Set. Click the Pick button on the top toolbar. Notice the entire right-most Version Set moves to the left to become the (default) Pick! Press command-Z to undo your change.
Now click on the right-most Version in the right-most Version set. Click the Pick button on the top toolbar. Notice that, not only does the entire right-most Version Set move to the left, but also the rightmost Version moves to the left-most position within the Version Set! You're not only telling Aperture to make the second Version Set the Pick for this Stack, you're also telling it that the right-most Version within that Version Set is the Pick for the Stack.
Play around with setting the Album Pick within each Stack and comparing Album1 with Album2 when you collapse the Stack.
This is a fun exercise that can really help you understand the difference (and similarities) between Version Sets, Stacks, (default) Picks, and Album Picks.
Please correct anything that I'm misunderstanding, or feel free to add anything you've found out about these topics.

I thank you for the clarification on those matters, while I have used stacks quite a bit I have not yet explored in full detail the Version Set concept (though I had a rough idea of what it did). That was a great job of investigation.

Can't connect using AEBS - driving me insane

hi, hopefully someone out there can help!!
i am trying to connect 2 computers to my AEBS. one is a mac mini and wired, the other is an ibook and wireless.
both of them connect perfectly when i connect them with wires directly into the modem. however when i try and route the connection through the AEBS neither the wired or wireless connection works. this is despite the ibook telling me that it's connected to the internet via airport.
i've called my ISP and talked to them, they gave me all the relevant settings but it hasn't made any difference. the problem seems to be in the AEBS itself.
any thoughts? it's driving me insane...

Hello thecornishman. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since your Macs are not able to access the Internet either wirelessly or by wire with the AEBSn, try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the computer(s)
4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

Undead keychain driving me insane!

Hey everybody.
So, I'm on a Macbook 2,1 running 10.6.8 and for months now there's been a problem driving me insane.
I've got a dual-band Airport Extreme station (one network is 2.4GHz b/g and the other is 5GHz n-only) and they're running on different SSIDs.
Obviously I connect to the 5GHz one and bliss is to be had. The problem, however, is that the other one is in my keychain and is at the top of the priority list and I just cannot delete it.
Whenever I delete it, it just pops back from nowhere after a while. (Sometimes immediately, sometimes within hours and sometimes after several days)
I've checked several times to see if I've actually deleted it and whenever I check, it's nowhere to be found. Still I periodically find myself with really slow LAN transfer speeds and invariably when I check my Airport status, I'm connected to the slow network.
Oh, and before anybody says anything: Keychain sync is (and has always been) disabled.

Hi Payne, not sure if I can help you with this. Have you tried opening keychain access from the utilities folder? If not do so and open Preferences - First Aid and check 'set login keychain as default'. Your password should be the same as your login password if you need to authorise. I presume you are using Tiger if not you need to post more detail of OS etc.,

I just purchased this movie on Thursday, May 15, so just a few days ago. I have never had any trouble whatsoever since I have been in Vietnam. I have downloaded several movies and even music and they have all synced to my respected Apple products except for this purchase.

I have some folders in iPhoto called 'Recovered Folder'. When I try to delete them I get this message: "one or more of the items in your selection contains Aperture albums that are not supported in iphoto".
I don't use Aperture (did install it to try it out), and have deleted Aperture App from my Mac.
How can I get rid of these fodlers?

i finally figured this out:
fyi, iphoto and aperture can now share (i.e., access) the same library. apple details it here:

i use both iphoto and aperture, and i suspect something went amiss, at some point, while aperture was accessing my iphoto library.
this is how i fixed the problem:
i launched aperture, then (per the instructions linked above) switched to (i.e., accessed) my iphoto library. i was then able to delete the "recovered folder" and the album it contained. i then quit aperture and relaunched iphoto.
NOTE: at that time, although i expected the "recovered folder" to be gone, it was still present. but this time, i was able to delete the folder from within iphoto without the "contains aperture items" error message.
(Sparky030405, i realize you've since deleted aperture. while i can't say my method is the *only* way to solve this problem, it's the way i was able to solve it. so, you might consider reinstalling aperture in order to delete the folder, then uninstalling aperture, once again.)

A way to only sync album picks with iOS?

I have a smart album that filters by 4 stars or above and I like to keep these photos synced at all times with my iphone/ipads. It works ok except that when we do multiple edits of the same photo in a stack they all get sync'ed. So if we have 7 different style of the same photo, all 7 would go into the devices. Album pick seems to have no effect with this. Is there any around this? I don't see any customization on the iTunes side so perhaps there is a way to make a smart album that only includes one photo of each stack?

Okay, haven't gotten my Touch yet. When you plug it in, on the Summary page in iTunes is there a box toward the bottom that says "Sync only checked items"?

Why my tracks are not shown in Album view and Artist view, only Album Artworks are shown???

I have not have this problem in the previous version of iTune. As soon as i upgraded it to iTunes 11, it happens.
The problem in here is all my songs, tracks are still here, i can see all of them in "songs view". However, when i change the view to Album View, and click into the Album artwork, there is no track there. When i double click into the Album Artwork, the first song of the album will be played normally.
Same story to the Artist View. Only the Album Artworks are shown and the rest is completely blank.
I have absolutely no idea what is going on here and obviously i am not satisfy with this new version.
Is there any way for me to fix this problem? Please help!
Otherwise i will need to use other software for music playing.

In iTunes, go to File>Add File to Library or File>Add Folder to Library.
