Album with multiple artists shows as multiple albums in iTunes

I have several albums where there are guest artists on different tracks within the album. iTunes has broken the album up into multiples with the same name and cover art, just different artists (i.e. "2Pac & Nate Dogg" vs. "2Pac & Danny Boy") This wouldn't be that bad except that if I want to play songs by album, i can't because the album has been broken up into multiples. This was not a problem until I updated to the newest version of iTunes and iPod Touch software. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • Albums with different artists appear separately in Album view.

    Hi,
As can be seen in the screen shot below, Album view displays songs separately if they are from different artists but from the same album.
this is also a problem in iPhone 3G album view. I see multiple copies of album name each with different set of songs. As, a result I can't choose an entire album and am forced to make playlists for albums.
    please help me fix this…

    HI AceNeerav,
I know this is a bit late... But maybe it will help someone else in the future!
I resolved this annoying problem on albums that were split out by "one album per song", even if they came from the same album (and they were purchased through the iTunes Store, BTW!).
Turns out all my albums with this problem where COMPILATIONS, and for some reason, the artist has to be unique for iTunes to see it as being part of the same album.
So here are the steps I took to resolve this:
    In iTunes, select all the songs from the same album (which do not appear as being from the same album);
    Right-click and select View Info (or CMD+i);
In the Album Artist field (not the Artist field), type a keyword. In my case, I chose "Various Artists".
    Press OK.
    Presto! Everything was sorted out!
Hope this helps anyone with the same frustration!

  • How to import a album with multiple artists in the one album?

How do I import a album with multiple artists as the one album.  Everytime I try to do this it does not collate it into one album, the other artists come up seperatley, also if this is possible can you set so that it works automatically everytime?
    Hope someone can help.

  • Artists show up multiple times in Artist listing

When I get a listing of songs by artist on my iPhone, some artists show up multiple times in the list. It's not that way on my computer. For instance, Death Cab for Cutie shows up twice, with different albums listed with each. However, some albums show up in both listings, but each with only partial selections of the songs on that album. So the first instance of DCC has album 1 with tracks 1-4 of the album and the second instance of DCC has album 1 with tracks 5-11.
I went so far as to highlight all my DCC songs on iTunes on my computer and pasted DCC into the Artist line of each song and then re-syncing. No change.
    Any clues?

Just wanted to add to this problem. I'm having the problem with Death Cab for Cutie and Kings of Leon. They show up twice on the artist list on my iPhone, but only once on my computer.
My biggest concern is that it's taking up twice the space on my phone.
If anyone has a solution to this it would be great!
    Thanks.

  • 9 Multiple artists on iPod & only 2 in iTunes

    I have 9 multiple artists on my iPod & 4 in iTunes;
On iPod: The Bloodhound Gang (5 times) & Bloodhound Gang (4 times)
On iTunes: The Bloodhound Gang (2 times) & Bloodhound Gang (1 time)
I have attempted to delete Bloodhound Gang on iTunes, only to have it reappear every time I sync my iPod. Also, I have attempted to change the name to only list The Bloodhound Gang, so to only list 1 artist, but that doesn't work either. All tracks are from one album, with 2 tracks purchased from iTunes and the whole CD loaded later. The Bloodhound Gang is for the whole CD, while just Bloodhound Gang is for the single tracks purchased. My iPod is PC format.

It will be easier if you use the same artist name & album artist name for all tracks from the same album. Since you have duplicate tracks I would suggest you also uncheck these and use the option to *Sync only check items*. The multiple albums issue ocurs because "The Artist" & "Artist" get sorted together, but the iPod registers the change in artist name as it is ennumerating the tracks and so creates a new album cover. Read on for more info.
    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set the compilation flag to true and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Managing soundtrack albums with different artists

I have a number of albums, such as soundtracks, with multiple artists, but I can't seem to figure out how to keep the album together as a whole without losing the individual artists. For example, I want all the songs from the Dreamgirls soundtrack in one place so I can shuffle just that album when I want to, but when I'd like to shuffle all my Jennifer Hudson songs, I'd like her Dreamgirls songs to be included there too when I sort by artist, you know? I've been playing around with the artist, album artist, and sorting options, but I haven't found what I need yet. It always works in one way, but not both.
Has anyone figured out how to do that?
    Thanks,
    Hans

A song on a compilation will be included in the list of albums/songs for a given artist, in Artists view, if the following conditions are true:
the album is classified as "part of a compilation"
the Album Artist value is blank
the Group Compilations setting in the Artist dropdown at the top right of the screen:
    is unchecked.
Example (not a soundtrack, but the data is comparable): when these conditions are true in the metadata for "The Best Prog Rock Album The World ... Ever!" album and the current view settings are as above, I get this:
i.e., the one track on the album by Jethro Tull is listed at the end of the grouping of other albums by the same artist.

  • HT5637 My Ipod Touch 4 with IOS 6.1.5 (new to me) is not associating all my albums with the artists.  All the music is there, it's just not in the right place.  Can you help an Apple novice?

I'm new to this so please forgive me if I'm not using the correct terms.  My ITunes version is 11.1.3.8.  For years I had an IPod Classic and it worked perfectly with all my music where I wanted it.  Unfortunately, it was recently stolen.  I bought a used/wiped clean 64GB IPod Touch 4 loaded with iOS 6.1.5.  I've tried to load my music twice and both times I'm getting the same odd results  While everything is properly associated in ITunes once I load and sync the IPod Touch there are several albums that are not associated with the Artist.  I'll explain further.  I prefer to sort my ITunes library and IPod by Artist.  So when I pull up some (not all) Artists on my IPod Touch some Albums that should be there are missing.  I say they are missing, they are there.  The total song count on ITunes matches that on the IPod Touch and if I sort by Album name, I can find the album that does not appear when I sort by Artist.  The reason I want to fix this issue is I appreciate a wide variety of music and I can envision me looking for an artist and not finding them and not being able to remember the name of the album.  The Rolling Stones are easy and I know how many albums they have an how many I have.  Smaller groups that may have only one album are more problematic.  Unless I randomly come accross the song I might never be able to find it or listen to it.  I know lots of people have more music than I do so I'm not bragging, but my library has 414 different artists spread across 1402 albums and I can't always remember what I own.  Speaking of owning, I own the physical CDs for the vast majority of my music so I don't think it's a situation of previously ripped music not showing up or not being formatted correctly.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey there jcgoutcher!
I believe your iPod may be set to group albums by album artist, which is a setting that can be turned off in your music settings. I will provide a link below that can help illustrate where to find this setting:

While the article in the link above is written for the iPhone, the setting will be found in the same place on your iPod touch. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • Album in iPhone 6 showing up under album, but not in artist?

I copied a CD onto my Mac and synced my Mac to my iPhone 6. On my Mac, the album shows under artist AND album but on my iPhone the album only shows up under Albums and under Various Artists on my iPhone. I'm confused.. HELP? Please

    Hello, rebelrebel12.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you have an album on your iPhone that does not mirror the same album data as iTunes on your computer.  I would try and adjust the album data so that it reflects the correct information.  The article below should help you correct this information.
Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?

  • Import Folder With Songs Without Show Them In Albums

    Good day to you all
I have 2 qustions i would like to ask ( sorry about my english)
    1. I have a folder i made on my desktop with many songs from lots of artists. i want to make a playlist with all of this songs. i can drag all of them to the playlist i made but i don't want them to show in the albums or artists view. is there a way to do it ? i can change the info of the songs to have the same album name and VA artists name so i have only one album but i can only do this in itunes and i don't want to import the folder the itunes beacuse i don't want to have a mess.
    2. when i play a song i have on my desktop it's automaticly had the song to itunes album and artist view - is there a way to disable it?
    thanks

    1) The moment you import the songs in iTunes, they will show up in album or artist view, no way to get around that. Why would you want that?
" i don't want to import the folder the itunes beacuse i don't want to have a mess."
You won't make a mess if you do it like this:
    - make a new playlist, name it.
    - open your folder on your desktop in a finder window, and select all songs (command + A)
    - drag these songs into this playlist, iTunes will add them to your library.
    - in iTunes, rename the appropriate ID3 tags by selecting what belongs together (as I understand, everything, so again command + A), Get Info (Command + I ) or rightclick, edit the ID3tags, and press enter.
    2) This is default normal behaviour. If a song is playable with iTunes, it will automatically launch iTunes when you double click it, and imported into your library.
If you do not want this, you want to open a song with another application, you can change the default app.
In the finder select a song from your folder, Get Info (command + I)
    There you have:
    Open with: iTunes (default)
Use the arrows to select another app to open it with
    and then press "Change All"
From now on your music files will open in this other app by default if you click them.
(Note: you have to repeat this process for each different file format extentions, like mp3, AAC, wav, ...)
If you don't want that either, you just want to temporarily listen without importing them, you can always use the preview function, by selecting the file, and hitting the spacebar. This will open the file in a preview mode.
With the arrows up or down you can go immediately to the previous or the next file without leaving preview mode.
    Hope that helps, good luck.

  • Albums with various artists down load as 13 separate items.  How do I rejoin them as an album?

When I import some compilation albums into my Itunes it seperates them out into seperate "albums" how can I "re-join".

Make sure "artist" and "album artist" are the same.
You only need make sure they all have an identical "album artist" to get them to group together. This can be anything as long as it is the same -- even "various artists" for a true compilation.  This is designed so you can keep different artists in the artist field but still have tracks group together.   In fact if you do make the artist fields identical, the album would group together in the first place and you don't need to touch album artist.  However, there may be cases where you do not want to put the identical artist in the artist field, then you need to either flag them as compilation (as indicated in another post) or give them all a single album artist.

  • Album artwork isn't showing up in album view (where all the albums are) but IS showing up when you drill into the specific album.

The album artwork isn't showing up in the album view where all the different albums are shown but when you drill into the specific album then it is shown.  This seems to be a recent problem as it wasn't happening in the past.

Nope, that doesn't work.  First, I manually manage the music, but even deleting and using auto-fill, doesn't put all the album art in place even though it is all on the songs in iTunes.  Even copying and pasting from iTunes to the iPhone does not get the artwork to show up, despite the fact it shows up in "Info" on the iPhone in iTunes.  Plus there seems no rhymn nor reason as to the missing artwork, some ripped songs have it, some purchased songs do not. Bizarre!  But I've run across this problem every since time I've restored an iPhone and had to redo the music separately, however, previously I could manually drop and drag the song over after the auto-fill to replace (after deleting on the iPhone) and the artwork would show up.  Not this time however.  This is one of those details I find extremely annoying!

  • Creating iPhoto smart album with criteria based on another smart album

When I create Smart Playlists in iTunes, I can set one of the criteria to include/exclude items based on a different smart playlist.
    For example,
    Smart Playlist 1=all songs by artist a, b, c, d, etc.
Smart Playlist 2=all songs where "genre=Holiday"
Smart Playlist 3=all songs that are in "Smart Playlist 1", but are NOT in "Smart Playlist 2".
This same concept doesn't seem to work in iPhoto. While it does seem to work if I'm basing them on regular albums, the "Album is xxxx" criteria option doesn't seem to even list Smart Albums.
Am I missing something or am I not even allowed to use Smart Albums as a criteria for other smart albums?

    You’re not missing anything.
