Albums and Songs seems disappear in iTunes Music folder  (8.0.1)

Before start a back up of my iTunes 8.0.1 I had curiosity to check the iTunes Library > iTunes Music
There I notice some Artist folder became empty: no album(s) and no song(s) anymore !?
I still can play them from the main iTunes window. But till when ?
Am afraid it could be an alert to some trouble.
Any suggestion ?

Maybe I was not clear enough in my explanation with some trouble in my iTunes (8.0.2 now).
Sometime iTunes loose the link to a song file. A question mark appear next the song, iTunes ask to recreate the missing link.
Time to time, I take a look into Music / iTunes folder
Time to time, I notice, some Artist Folder became empty. Maybe the first step to a missing link or something worst ?...
But iTunes (the App) still showing and play the song (?!)
I (wrongly?) consider it as a trouble which make me loose for good part of my Library.
Dragging the empty Artist Folder from the iTunes Folder to the Desktop, make Album Folders and Song Files reappear in the previous empty Artist Folder !...
I do not consider that very normal or did I miss something ?

  • Adding songs, they copy to iTunes music folder, but don't show up in my lib

    Hi,
I recently built a new computer, and wanted to put my music on it from my external hard drive, which contained my "iTunes Music Folder" from my old computer. However, when I add music from my external hard drive to my new computer's hard drive, it says it's copying it to the iTunes Music Folder (on my new comp), and says that it's "Analyzing Gapless Playback" and the like, but the only problem is, the music doesn't show up on my Library! And I've looked, all the music copied to the new iTunes Music Folder, but my library (in the iTunes program itself) remains a blank list! Does anyone know what the problem is, and what I can do to fix it? Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell that's running Windows XP. I have found that itunes is very temperamental. this works most of the time... except on my son's computer that's running Windows Vista.
Go to your library in iTunes. Then go up to file and try one of the options (import, add folder to library, or add file to library).
Adding a folder is the least work. You can add all the files from a folder with one click... if it works. Remember that itunes is temperamental.
If that doesn't work, try adding a file. The problem with that is that you have to go through the whole process for each and every file (song, movie, etc).
Sometimes the only thing that works is to import.
I haven't gotten iTunes to work on my son's computer (Windows Vista).
I can't get support from apple in any way at all! They are good about creating electronics that appeal to us But they are lousy at support. If anyone figures out how to access support (where you can actually contact Apple) please let me know ([email protected]). I've been trying for 6 months.

  • How do I remove song files from my iTunes Music Folder that are deleted?

    Hi,
When I deleted unwanted songs from my iTunes Library I selected the option to Keep Files instead of Moving Song to the Recycle Bin. As a result I've now got a load of unwanted music files clogging up my music folders.
So how can I identify music files that are in my iTunes Music Folders but have been deleted from the iTunes Library and then remove them from my hard drive?
    Cheers,
    Andy.

Here's a thought, have you added any new items to your library recently?
If you add your iTunes music folder to your library, anything not already in your library will be added.
Now go to your library view and make sure you have the date added column visible. (Right click in the header row to get a list of columns that can be selcted).
Now sort by date added and everying you just added will be together and can be easily identified for deletion.
Note this only applies if files are in the iTunes Music folder, files in other places have to be deleted in Windows Explorer.
PS iT is usually a good idea to make a copy of iTunes Library.itl before experimenting. Copy it from your iTunes folder to somewhere else.

  • Is it a MUST to have both itunes library and itunes music folder?

I just noticed I have 22 GB of music in itunes library (itunes application) and also 22GB of music in itunes music folder. Do I need to have both folders active? What would happen if I delete all the music in itunes music folder? Should that delete all the songs in my itunes application?
    Thanks.

The iTunes Library is a database file, it contains references to songs you've added to the library, their location on your hard drive, playlists, ratings etc. The library does not contain the actual song files. The iTunes Music Folder is the folder that contains the song and other media files. Deleting the folder that contains the songs would mean the the library couldn't locate them (because they would no longer exist) and there would be nothing to play. The iTunes application (the actual program) resides in your Applications folder. You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?

  • Number of files in iTunes Music folder compared to songs in iTunes program

Being a perfectionist and wanting everything to be 100% accurate, I went to Windows explorer and right clicked on the iTunes Music folder to see if the number of files reported agreed to the number in my iTunes program and hence on my iPod. Windows told me that the iTunes Music folder contained 2769 files. In the iTunes program it says 2724 songs (which i know includes Music videos of which there are 35). I also have 20 movies and 35 TV shows.
    So, that is 2724 + 20 + 15 = 2759.
My iTunes folder therfore says i have 10 more files than my iTunes program says i have.
And i have done a "Consolidate library".
Has anyone else done the same check and noticed similar discrepancies? Are there possibly some files in the iTunes folder that do not end up in the iTunes program?
Many thanks for any light that can be thrown on this !

+"And i have done a "Consolidate library". Has anyone else done the same check and noticed similar discrepancies? Are there possibly some files in the iTunes folder that do not end up in the iTunes program?"+
Consolidate will not help; it only looks at songs that are already in the library. Run File > Add Folder to Library on your iTunes folder. That will try to pick up any songs that are in the folder but not in the library. It will however skip any file that is not compatible with iTunes.

  • Lost consolidated iTunes Music folder; Recovered much of it, unconsolidated

How to re-consolidate without starting over?
I had about 60,000 songs consolidated into my iTunes Music folder on one external drive, with my Library in my User folder on my internal startup drive. I also had a backup of all this on another external drive. A power surge from overloading my home electrical system fried both external drives: they are dead. My computer, with its Library (and thoughtfully labored-on Playlists, but of course without the song data files), is intact. I have added new songs since then, about 3,000 of them, with the a new iTunes Music folder in the User folder on my internal startup drive. I have added the new songs to the original Library, in the hope that its playlists would some day be operable if I recover the lost songs. So, of course, I have 60,000 Library entries with exclamation points next to them (no links to the data files, since the data files are lost).
I recently recovered about 40,000 of the original 60,000 songs (data files), but they are scattered around several other drives, +not at all+ consolidated.
So my problem is: how to get all the pieces of the system back together again?
It is clearly not feasible to manually link all 40,000 files one by one.
I know I could delete my Library and start over and "Add to Library" all the 43,000 songs that are unconsolidated and scattered through various drives. But I fear this would render all my playlists inoperable--even if I were to save them, export them, and then re-import them into the new Library. Would it?
I know I could also keep my Library as is and "Add to Library" all the 40,000 songs that are scattered through other drives. But I fear this would give me twice as many song entries, half of them duplicates with exclamation points next to them (no link to the actual song). And I don't even know whether this would save the operability of my precious Playlists.
Over the years, I had carefully corrected errors in the spelling and naming of thousands of songs and albums through my Library. I fear that those corrections live only in the Library, and will be lost if I start over and just build a new Library from the 40,000 recovered songs. Or are such corrections, when made in the Library, applied to the actual data files as well, in which case many of the 40,000 recovered songs would have those changes in them, and would show up in the rebuilt Library?
Is there some strategy for bringing it all together (and keeping my Library and its Playlists intact and operable) that will save me?
    Thank you,
    Mark

  • ITunes Music Folder

Ok, so I tried downloading a TV show last night from the iTunes store and it said I didn't have enough space on my Hard Drive to complete the download. Well, that threw me off and as I was looking to see what was eating all my memory I noticed that my iTunes Music Folder, when navigated to via the finder, shows I have 30 GB of music files. If I look at the bottom of the iTunes window when the program is open it only shows 14 GB. I did FILE>SHOW DUPLICATES and it only shows 6.5 GB of duplicates. Does anyone know what is going on or how to correct? It is like there is two of every song, but I don't see duplicates in the iTunes Music Folder.

it is possible and likely that you have song files in your iTunes music folder that aren't referenced in your iTunes library. in other words, there are files in your iTunes music folder that iTunes doesn't know about.
for an unknow reason, you may have duplicate your songs using the finder. you can validate this by doing a "Get info" in iTunes on a song for which you see duplicate using the Finder. The Get info will show you the path of the selected song in the General tab. The duplicate you will see in the finder would have a difference in the name. This will allow you to manually discriminate which song is referenced in iTunes. But this could be a tedious task.
At this point, you will need to clean up this mess and there is several way to go. the simplest could be to drag'n drop your whole iTunes Music File into the iTunes window in order to have iTunes reference all your files and then, clean up the duplicates.
you may think of other way to go, but this will not be simple if you have a large library.

  • ITunes music folder keeps reverting back to default

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it: I just moved my music library to a new hard drive, following the Apple instructions on "moving the iTunes music folder" (i.e. changing the iTunes music folder location on the advanced tab in preferences, setting it up to copy files, and then consolidating the library). The move worked, but for some reason, whenever I exit iTunes and come back in, the iTunes music folder reverts back to the default (C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\My Music). It doesn't announce it or anything, but when I go to add new music, it sends it there instead of the new drive. What am I missing on the transfer?

Your media should normally be in <User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Media\<Etc.> not <User's Music>\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries.
Was your library working properly on this computer before you reinstalled iTunes, or is there something you've left out of the picture?

  • HT4915 When i did my itunes match, there were some duplicated albums and songs.  I have gone into my library and deleted the duplicates, but they still show up on my iphone as duplicates.  What can i do to get rid of them?

When I did my itunes match, there were some duplicated albums and songs in my library.  I have gone back into my library from my computer, and deleted the duplicates.  When I did so, itunes did not ask me if I wanted to delete them from the cloud.  They are still showing up on my iphone as duplicates in the cloud.  What can I do to get them from showing up in my iphone?

They are not on the iphone in the first place.  It is just a setting that allows you to see the songs that are available in icloud, but not on your iphone.  If you turn the setting to off, then you no longer see the songs that are in icloud, but NOT on your iphone.

  • Songs not showing in iTunes Music Library....Please help!

    Hello,
I'm running into a problem with my iTunes library. I'm pretty new to the Mac - so I was hoping one of the experts on this forum might have an answer. Since we just got our iMac (we're PC converts) I'm totally willing to accept that I may have just dome something incorrect.
I have a DVD/RW that has my music backed up to it (all MP3 and a few AAC), it has about 750 songs in all. I tried to add the music from that disc using "Add To Library" function. It seemed to copy and process all 700+ songs just fine, but when when I look at my Music Library in the main iTunes window, it only shows the first 40 or so (it only has artists A-B alphabetically), and that's it.
When I look in my user/music/itunes/itunes music folder, it appears that iTunes copied all the songs to the folder properly in an itunes music/artist/album format. For some reason it just only shows the first few Artists in the main Music Library.
The weird thing is, I have a couple other discs (CD/RW's) that have a few MP3's on them (10-15 per disc - songs I added after making my large backup)....and I was able to add those to the iTunes library using the same "Add To Library" function, with no issues at all.
This is a brand spankin' new just-out-of-the-box iMac (so a fresh install of Leopard), with all the latest software updates applied before I started putting any of my stuff on.
Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sully

Use the add to library function again, but just point the application to the iTunes library on the computer rather than the DVD backup.
